Read Out of the Blue by Jason June and I genuinely loved that book till I got to the final 3rd and it just... became a drama fest
Also spoiler alert for the book under the read more because that part made me SO upset
Not the book just excusing cheating. One of the main characters, Ross, just kisses someone else and gets ready to have sex with them but last second realises they don't want that. Then Sean walks in on them, gets rightfully upset over what he sees. One of Sean's friends calls it cheating. And then the book just turns it into "well we're not meant to be due to our homes being so far apart" instead. I find it so tone deaf that someone cheats on Sean, is called out. Then Ross cheats on Sean and it's forgotten.

If I See You Again Tomorrow by Robbie Couch If enjoyed all of Robbie Couch's books and this one is no exception - in fact this might be my favourite of his work. This is a YA time loop story in which Clark has been reliving the same day over 300 times in a row when his therapist suddenly changes the homework he usually gets at the end of their session - he should try and make a new friend. Clark is completely thrown off by this assignment, and even more so when, the next day, a new boy comes into his maths class for the very first time. I LOVED this book, and I really enjoyed Clark as a character. I do feel like I should warn people when I recommend Robbie Couch books that the romance is not the main focus of the story - the main character is the focus, and the love interest is just a puzzle piece that fits into the main character's full life. So other readers may find this book unfulfilling because they were looking for a proper romance genre story. So that said, if you enjoy YA stories about characters working on their mental health, strengthening their relationships with their friends and family, and learning about themselves and how they fit into the world, you'll probably really enjoy this book. The time loop aspect and the lore around it is really fun and interesting too, and is different from the other time loop media I've seen before.

Have you got any recommendations for books for young people (14+) around queer history & particular trans history? If possible in the UK? I've been a volunteer with a queer youth group for a while and I'm about to start as a youth worker, we keep a library for young people to borrow from so I'm always looking for new stuff. Thanks! 🥰🌈
Yes absolutely, here are some favourites!
Desert Queen
Dark and Deepest Red
A Quick & Easy Guide to Queer & Trans Identities
Queer Ducks (and Other Animals): The Natural World of Animal Sexuality
Beyond the Gender Binary

It's a Love/Skate Relationship
US Release: January 28, 2025
UK Release: March 13, 2025
Preorder & Goodreads links here!
Fans of Rachael Lippincott, Elise Bryant, and Dahlia Adler will love this joyful debut novel, a sapphic enemies-to-lovers romance between a hotheaded hockey player and the ice princess at the figure skating rink next door.
Charlie Porter is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the hockey rink. When she accidentally starts a brawl after a game, she's suspended from school, meaning no hockey this season--and no chance to play in front of college scouts.
Alexa Goldstein's pairs skating partner was hurt in the fight, and with only four months until their next competition, pickings for a replacement are slim. So she strikes a deal with Charlie--skate with her at the competition well enough to place, and her Olympian mother will use her formidable connections to get Charlie in front of scouts at D-1 schools, even without her team.
It seems impossible, and not just because Charlie has never figure skated before. Where Charlie is powerful, Alexa is elegant; where Charlie is quick to blow up, Alexa is cold as ice. But as the frostiness between them starts to thaw, they begin to wonder if they've found a partner for more than just skating.

A few hours at home and the Telegraph Club seemed more like a fantasy than a real thing. This troubled her. It felt as if someone had taken an eraser to her memory - to her very self - and rubbed at it, then blown away the remains. Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

The coldest touch was ok. It was fun enough. I just kept feeling that the end gave sequel vibes? But there are no plans for one. It's just weird to me because it really felt like it was setting up a sequel
Also Wyn is the best character and i love them

i'm kind of late to this but i just finished reading the scholomance trilogy by naomi novik and i feel like it is such an underrated urban fantasy?? taking the chosen one trope and turning it on its head with a fmc who has been prophesied to bring death and destruction, who is imbued with terrible power, but cannot even properly use said power to solve any of her obstacles because it would obliterate them and her soul. it takes a tired trope and the idea of an 'overpowered mary sue' and throws it back in your face by showing how all the power and destiny in the world is useless against a system filled with corruption that has burdened you with an easy way out (evil/destructive magic) that you can't take so now you have to work twice as hard as everyone else just to do simple, constructive spells instead of flicking your wrist and being done with it.
#the scholomance#naomi novik#galadriel higgins#orion lake#bookblr#urban fantasy#a deadly education#the last graduate#ya fantasy#the golden enclave#ya fiction#it has a diverse cast#queerness just effortlessly woven in#and the entire thing is so seamlessly crafted with a narrative on what real change looks like#how to really rid your environment of corruption and change society for the better you have to do the gritty work#you have to be willing to do the unpleasant hard grueling organization and working with people / meeting them where they're at#you might not even get to see or do the pretty parts#but its still worth doing the distatesful shit#doing the compromising and giving space for people to learn and make up for mistakes#so that future generations can do better#and have the childhood u didn't#no spoilers in case by some miracle i convince another soul to read this but like#she legit fucking says it in the book#it's not the work she wants to do in the end. not what she envisioned. but she does what she must to make sure other kids don't suffer#makes me think of climate activism so much#we might not get to have the pretty wonderful utopia but we have to be willing to do the shitty stuff it takes to make that future possible

i still think a lot about how technically, it's implied Anubis and Walt started dating each other before they asked out Sadie, and if Sadie had said she wasn't interested they would have gone "Entirely fair have a nice day" and proceed to just go continue to date each other.
Cause like, that was the entire thing. They decided that themselves. That things would work best if they were together (as in both physically sharing a body and also relationship-wise). The "asking Sadie about it" part was secondary. If she had said no, they would have stayed together, because among other things Walt would kind of die if they didn't. Walt and Anubis are technically the first gay couple in the Riordanverse. AND they're in a polyamorous relationship with Sadie. Why does no one talk about them ever.
#tkc#the kane chronicles#riordanverse#walt stone#anubis tkc#sadie kane#saltnubis#< great ship name btw#and for anyone who says ''i dont think Rick intended that'' mind you this book was released like#six months before HoH came out (and. subsequently also. Nico.)#like. Rick was not ignorant of queer stuff at that time. he was actively writing it into HoO/HoH while writing both simultaneously#if Sadie had said no they wouldn't have just gone ''okay Sadie pick one of us and the other will cease to exist on the mortal plane''#they would have gone ''okay well good luck we have a coffee date scheduled so we're gonna go do that''#saltnubis is still probably the most entertaining solution to a love triangle in middle grade media i have ever encountered#even some YA media. just ''yeah so we solved both our major problems by dating but like. we know you like both of us sooooo...?''#also hilarious that meanwhile Carter's romance arc is ''so turns out my first girlfriend was a clone made of pottery''#''and the actual girl has never met me and this is kinda awkward''

Can I tell you about a book with
art heists entirely fueled by spite and complicated father/son dynamics
soft gay touch starved yearning
teens who want to save each other, who are inherently good and full of love
tragic yet hopeful love that you have to believe will be enough
a Greek mythology inspired plot because it's GAY ICARUS

why is it that 90% of criticism of the song of achilles just boils down to not accepting the conventions of romance as a genre and wanting it to simply be a different book than what it is? because seriously if you can’t get with the fact that the song of achilles is a queer romance story first and a retelling of the iliad second you’re never gonna make a criticism of it that’s interesting to me. if i wanted to read a book that was accurate to the source material then i would just read the iliad. if i wanted to read a queer romance unfolding on the backdrop of a mythical war i would read the song of achilles. if you dont understand the difference between those two things then your beef with that book is just a waste of time to me
#tangential but i think tsoa had a little bit of a hunger games effect#where it inspired so many knockoffs of itself that it retroactively is percieved as worse than it actually is#also at the end of the day its obviously not meant to be about the iliad its about tragic queer love in ancient greece#it frustrates me a lot that people really just cant understand that lmaooo#.txt#alex talks#books#bookblr#the song of achilles#the iliad#the classics#patrochilles#achilles/patroclus#ya#ancient greece#ancient rome#greatest hits
