the trouble with keeping things by the book
I have to admit, when I first saw a preview of IWTV, I groaned and completely disregarded it. Why? Because my head had already come up with who these characters were, where they lived and what they looked like (thanks to the movie, they all pretty much looked like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and the version of Armand from Queen Of The Damned…who looks more like Sam honestly). It was utterly bizarre that “they” had decided to revamp the story with clear lgbt themes, different timelines, actors that weren’t just all white, racism and classist themes…the story wasn’t as cut and dry anymore. This frightened me. I was worried what Anne would think of all this change happening to her story. And I was worried it would like…I dunno…if Girls was a show about vampires. How many social issues can we cram into an hour sorta deal. This is a story that one reads to escape into. It’s very special for doing that for those of us who have sat in a lonely school library during lunch hour. No friends but in my head I was Claudia. And I took parts of her away with me after reading. The confidence, the swagger, the mouth. So I panicked. It took until this late summer to jump on the bandwagon. AMC was free for a month so why not? And ya know what? I think Anne would be proud. If you had the joy of interacting with her on Facebook, you know that she was an advocate and loved the fan interactions and interpretations. She loved the questions (Lestat did not kill Paul. That’s on the record now) and had a lot of fun with us. She wrote those books awhile ago. Things change. Characters evolve even if the author isn’t there writing about them. The author births them and the fans and the world helps them grow. The world changed and so did “our” little vampire family. It’s good. This is good. What are these ramblings really about? I’ve learned to give things a chance.

Dang...
So July.
A definite crescendo of a month. Especially for one that starts off with explosions.
One month after moving back to the house after four years living on the Hill, it turns out the correct answer was...
Moving back to the house.
What can I say?
The reasons that made the choice such a difficult one not even two months ago... weren't so tough to navigate after all. Especially the commute side of the equation. It actually does work better than we would've guessed. Plus... the house is super chill, very quiet. Which makes sense since I-5 doesn't run right in front of it. Plus, though the remodeling of the house wasn't actually intended for us, it sure makes the house more optimized for what we do and want.
So yeah. A great call.
July fifth was our dating anniversary, the date of our establishing being July 5, 1990. Kind of a while ago. We lazed the morning. Went to see Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny at the Crest Theater, hit the Ballard GoodWill for some random browsing, derailed a trip to Trader Joe's by going to PCC across the street instead for orange creamsicles we subsequently enjoyed on the roof. Had a picnic on the shores of Smith Cove in front of Expedia. Did a walkabout of the Seattle Center for old time's sake. Finished off at Tapster on South Lake Union all—
On a sunny summer's day.
It was a fantastic dating anniversary.
Moving through the month, the next big event was this year's 48 Hour Film Project competition with the Combat Wombats, the production team that was kind enough to invite me to be a Wombat a coupla years ago for their short film, "Cleaners". This year's effort, "PTAgent" was, yes, hard work and a delight for all of us. It also feels like we're getting better at this having begun the journey at a high level to begin with.
By the way, the 48 Hour weekend was also proof of something Kimmer created: my edit suite. This was basically the shakedown cruise for using the room as intended, including the space for clients.
Initially I was thinking the overstuffed couch should be replaced with something a more sleek. That is... until Saturday night and Sunday during the day when the weary director and producer of "PTAgent" put its overstuffed comfort to good use.
The end of the 48 Hour extravaganza always features a dinner out with Kimmer. It's a tradition we didn't know was gonna be a tradition... but a tradition we started with my first 48 Hour Film Project editing "Cleaners", an experience that kept me up that particular Saturday night until 5AM Sunday morning and then up again by 9... four hours later. I think I finished with the edit around 4 that afternoon? At which point Kimmer offers dinner at Maggie Bluffs, our first such celebratory dinner with this year's, our fourth, at Las Brisas in Edmonds. ☺️☺️☺️
The reward for our 48 Hour experience, of course, was the opportunity to watch our work on the big screen at the Uptown Cinema in lower Queen Ann where, once upon a time as a youngster, I watched Young Sherlock Holmes.
youtube
Moving on, the second half of the month was definitely the most incredibly packed half.
So the 48 Hour Film Project competition began the evening of Friday, July 14 ending on the evening of July 16. Four days later, Thursday the 20th, Kimmer 'n I drive up to the neighborhood behind the Grand Avenue Park Bridge, park our car, and walk down to the Everett Marina where Linzy's performing with the band The Little Lies.
Two days after that, Saturday, middle of the day, we join the band again at their Bite of Seattle performance that's taking place on one of the busiest weekends in Seattle history including but not limited to a Mariners game, the Capitol Hill Block Party, various cruise ship departures, and a Taylor Swift at Lumen Field mega concert. All of which conspired to bring everyone into the heart of Seattle.
youtube
Every place in the city was packed, is all I'm saying.
Same deal the next day, Sunday the 23rd, when we return to the Bite to see another band of which Linzy's a member: Midnight High (more on that band in a moment).
The Midnight High performance was around 1 in the afternoon after which we went back to the house as Linzy went on to that evening's Taylor Swift concert which, according to everyone, was a VERY big deal. Certainly for Linzy who basically grew up as a musician with Taylor's career. 🤩🤩🤩
Now, while all these shows were happening, as the world premiere of the film I cut approached, Kimmer was also up to her eyeballs... having officially applied to a doctorate program at her alma mater. And, by the time the screening happened, she was officially accepted.
HUZZAH!!!!!! 😁😁😁
And the doctorate program?
Doctor of Science in Integrative Health from the American College of Healthcare Sciences.
So there it is.
We all three were having a very busy week.
A coupla evenings later, Tuesday the 25th, I'm prefunctioning at the home of the Combat Wombats' director as most of the team gathers for pizza oven cooked pizza and drinks and talking shop and talking life… before heading to the Uptown Cinema for the world premiere of "PTAgent" on the big screen. By the time I get home, it's already a half hour into Sunday the 26th, the morning on which we're leaving for southern California to visit family and check in on Kimmer's aunt. At this point, we've gotta be out the door in six hours but manage to eat one of those hours watching an episode of Madame Secretary, a series that's turned out to be a big deal for us this summer after we blitzed through the eight episode season one of The Diplomat four times in a row.
Yeah. We desperately needed another show to watch.
So credits roll on Madam Secretary and now it's a little after 130AM. The way things work out, we'll be up three and a half hours later at 5AM, ready and on the road to the airport by 640AM, in the air by 8, and so on.
Which pretty much explains how tired we were the rest of the day.
Our California family's family, though, which means they give us a huuuuge shot of energy for four solid days of taking our home life on the road, an essential part of which is about seeing Kimmer's aunt who lives in a memory care community.
By the time we're home again, we're into the first minutes of Sunday the 30th, a day that we figured will be a normal-ish, chores-ish day that suddenly turns into the world premiere of Linzy's music on the radio.
One of the bands in which she performs harmonies and keys, you see, is called Midnight High, their latest gig being that one at the Bite of Seattle. And Sunday evening, our day back from California, they're on the Locals Only show on KNDD-FM 107.7 The End. They're promoting their new album, "Swimming Lessons", showcasing a few songs from that album and sharing some of their favorite music including "I Don't Wanna Know" from Linzy's debut Dream Patrol project EP titled "Made For TV".
Dang.
That made for a very "That Thing You Do" moment for us at home and for Linzy over at her place.
youtube
And yup.
After a crazy busy July, that's seven months down.
Five to go.

So I see we’re sharing how we got into the Vampire Chronicles, which I think is a pretty neat idea (hope you don’t mind me tagging you @i-want-my-iwtv - I was thinking of inboxing you but then realised “hmm.. bit too long for that” 😂), so here’s my experience.
I’ve been into vampires for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, it was very much the kid-friendly stuff (still iconic!) like The Little Vampire and Young Dracula. Then when the Vampire Renaissance of 2008-2010s occurred (I was.. I want to say 12? some age around then?), I saw Twilight and the Vampire Diaries and was like “ok this is certainly different from what I’m used to but I am enjoying it (yeah... that definitely changed with the latter show eventually 😂) but I think there’s something about my love of vampires that I’m not really getting with these franchises”. And then I went further down the “grown-up vampire” media rabbit hole and found That 90s Vampire Film Starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
I thought it was going to be one of the most “please come see our film, it’s mediocre as hell but we’ve got all these pretty A-list actors to distract you from that!” films ever. But as it turned out, I’ve never been so happy to be wrong in my life. I was just enthralled with this film. The acting was phenomenal, the look of the film was just stunning, and the characters were exactly what I was looking for in, let’s say, the next step in my vampire-loving adventure. This was the first vampire film I watched that really emphasised the metaphor of vampires being outsiders, and how their immortal existence can be a gift and a curse. It showed how different vampires deal with that immortality - some are gleefully sadistic, some are apathetic, some find it to be the worst hell imaginable that drives them completely insane, and some are... well... Louis. Love her or hate her, it’s easy to see that Anne Rice definitely changed the way we view vampires in fiction, and what they represent about our own human nature.
So, then I found out the film was based on a book. So I raced to the book store and bought it, then found out it’s a whole series! Yeah... I’ve only read the first three books 😂 (I will get around to the others eventually it’s just.. there’s a lot of them, haha!) but to summarise, much like the other vampire shows I briefly touched on, Interview With the Vampire was a very formative film for me growing up. And it’s a film (and book) that I love revisiting. So, I cannot wait to see this new AMC series, to see what fresh blood (pun fully intended) is brought into this wonderful franchise.
P.S. Yes, I watched Queen of the Damned around that time too and... look, I’m not saying anything new by calling it a pretty bad adaptation and I can’t exactly say it’s a good film all-in-all BUT it does have one of my favourite soundtracks and Aaliyah was legit amazing as Akasha, sooooo, yep.

Hey I saw one of your older posts where you mentioned that you didn’t like anne rice. And so with that i wanted to know your thoughts on Interview with the Vampire??
I have a love/hate relationship with Interview with the Vampire and I stopped reading her books after The Vampire Lestat.
One of the things I really don't like is the fact that Louis was a slave owner and that's...just kind of brushed off like it's no big deal. Yes, I know that this was normalized in the time period takes place, but Louis is telling the story from his perspective in the present day, and, at least from what I can remember, Louis offers no self-criticism for his actions? 300 years is not enough time to reflect on your past actions?
Also, thanks to Tumblr, as an adult I now realize how laughably ridiculous Anne Rice's writing style can be. It really is not that much different than the My Immortal fanfiction.
With all of this said, I think what saves both books for me is that the characters on their own are interesting and unique, and I think that's what ultimately gave her stories staying power...but I think it also has a lot to do with the fandom's dedication to them. This is also ironic as Anne Rice was vehemently against fanfiction...and I think the fans could probably do more for her characters than she was able to. This is probably why I enjoyed the movie adaptations of Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned more than the books. I mean, yes, they did leave a lot of stuff out, but Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Aaliyah, and Stuart Townsend, I think, brought the characters to life way more than Rice herself did.

Little Mix on what it takes to survive being the most bullied band in pop
Still teenagers when they were catapulted to fame, superstardom came at a price for Little Mix. They open up to Francesca Babb about the soaring highs and crashing lows of the past nine years. It is the end of our YOU cover shoot, and I am facing the lesser-spotted sight of a barefaced Little Mix. Wet wipes swipe back and forth across their faces and, as the foundation departs in a deluge of coffee-coloured tissues, Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, both 29, and Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards, both 27, visibly relax into their tracksuits and boyfriend jeans, shoulders dropping as they settle into themselves. I’m so used to seeing them contoured and camera ready that I assumed full glamour was their happy place. But perhaps the real Little Mix are not the war-paint-and-leotard-clad pop stars we’ve spent almost ten years watching grow up, but rather the four women they have become behind the glare of the spotlight. It’s those four women that I’m intrigued to meet. Since winning The X Factor nine years ago, there have been highs – selling over 50 million records globally, a significant percentage of which were self-penned, and creating enough accompanying make-up lines and merchandise to keep them and their families comfortable for the foreseeable future (recent reports suggest they have earned a combined £28.5 million to date). But there have also been lows – perpetual picking apart by both the public and the press, bullying and vitriol from online trolls. The most extreme cases of which led Jesy to attempt suicide during Little Mix’s early days in 2013 (she regards a tweet from the controversial Katie Hopkins – ‘Packet Mix have still got a chubber in their ranks. Less Little Mix. More Pick n Mix’ – as the ‘pinnacle point’ for her depression) and pushed Perrie into an ongoing struggle with anxiety. Fame has changed them. In some ways they are still youthful and silly – dropping phrases into conversation that wouldn’t be out of place in a playground – yet, in others, they are wise beyond their years, diving headfirst into battles on feminism, race and mental health. They’re fun enough to be light relief, smart enough to inspire a generation struggling with the pressures of youth and social media even before a pandemic was thrown at them, and ballsy enough to leave Simon Cowell’s record label because they didn’t feel he had their best interests at heart. ‘It’s never really been a cruise, has it?’ Jade ponders, a copy of social activist Bell Hooks’ 2002 feminist theory Communion: The Female Search For Love in her hand (not for show, I might add; when I ask her about it, she is well versed in its content). ‘It’s either been a really big high, or a really big low.’ Jesy, who has found herself the target of some of the cruelest contempt from the world outside Little Mix, agrees: ‘Some of the best times, some of the worst times.’ Comments on her weight, her looks, her place in the band, comments that she should take her own life, all led her into a deep depression and the aforementioned suicide attempt. Her documentary last year, Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, revealed her journey through it all and, while harrowing, it is essential viewing on the realities of growing up in a world dominated by social media. ‘Before we got in the group, I never looked at myself and thought, “I don’t like that” – I don’t think any of us did. I never thought, “Oh god, I’m fat”, and then we got in the industry, and we all started wanting to change things about ourselves. It’s so sad. There are things [in the past] I definitely wish I hadn’t done,’ she says, referring to the suicide attempt, in which she took an overdose after a two-year battle with depression and an eating disorder. ‘But would I be the person I am today if I hadn’t gone through all of that?’ ‘There was a time when it was worse than it is now,’ adds Leigh-Anne, who has increasingly used her own Instagram channel to vocalise her experience of racism, both overt and underlying, throughout her time in the band. ‘I guess we’re taking steps forward, but I fear for my [future] daughters…’ ‘It makes me not want to have a kid,’ agrees Jesy. ‘Those insecurities that we all have now because of social media, imagine having that embedded in you as a child?’ Before you write them off as four very lucky girls ungratefully complaining about a lifestyle so many dream of, I should point out that they are fully aware of the paradox of their privilege. I suppose the point is, it’s not too much to ask to not be bullied to the point of hospitalisation as a by-product, is it? ‘Little Mix has changed our lives for the better, and our families’ lives, and we have achieved so much,’ says Perrie. ‘Don’t get me wrong,’ agrees Jesy (a warning I will hear repeatedly throughout our hour together, perhaps thanks to almost a decade of their quotes being blasted out of context for click-bait). ‘I’m not going to sit here and say we’ve got a terrible life, because we haven’t, but I do think our innocence was taken from us.’ It’s a while since the girls last did any press. Lockdown saw a halt to any activity they had planned, including the launch of their new talent show, BBC1’s Little Mix: The Search (in which they, well, search for a new band to mentor and join them on tour). But the time apart has not diminished their ability to finish each other’s sentences and jump to each other’s aid. It has, it seems, been really rather good for them and allowed them to come back fired up for the release of their sixth album, Confetti, which came out this week. ‘It was needed,’ agrees Jesy. ‘We’re never not with each other and we’re always busy. Our mornings start early, we finish really late.’ Being at home has meant more time spent with their families, with Jade even starting her own show on MTV with her mum Norma. Called Served!, the self-filmed series saw the pair interview celebrity drag queens and challenge each other to cooking competitions. ‘I love drag culture,’ she says, ‘and me mam was by herself in lockdown, so I thought it’d be something nice to keep her entertained.’ ‘Your mum could be on Loose Women,’ Leigh-Anne muses. ‘Imagine our mams on a show!’ shrieks Jade. ‘Nobody else would get a word in edgeways with my mam,’ laughs Perrie. ‘Ooh, when Debbie goes off on Twitter,’ says Jade, of Perrie’s mum’s habit of weighing in on comments from haters. ‘My mam will text me, have you seen Debbie’s been going off on someone!’ It is interesting that all four talk frequently about their mums throughout our chat, and yet there is no mention of fathers. While their mums often appear on Instagram, a sighting of Perrie’s dad on her 23rd birthday was extremely rare. Perhaps the Little Mix dads’ absence in the narrative is because the four girls were predominantly raised by their mothers (all of their parents separated when they were younger), and another reason the group’s bond is so tight. Little Mix are each other’s wall of arms, their own personal bodyguards. Jesy, they unanimously agree, is Scary Mix (although I find her a delight), which is interesting given her own inability to bat off other people’s words. ‘When it’s you on your own dealing with something personally,’ Jesy says, ‘It’s completely different. You feel so vulnerable alone, but we are a force when we’re together.’ It’s not hard to see, in today’s social-media obsessed society where there is little retribution for cruelty, why four attractive, successful young women, with attractive, successful young boyfriends (two footballers – Perrie dates Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Leigh-Anne is engaged to Watford’s Andre Gray – while Jade is with Rizzle Kicks singer Jordan Stephens and Jesy is going out with Our Girl actor Sean Sagar), who seem to be living a dream life have found themselves at the heart of a whirlwind of vitriol. There was the infamous spat with Piers Morgan, in which he mocked them for posing naked but for the insults that have been hurled at them painted on their bodies. He accused them of using sex to sell records and called them ‘foul-mouthed, talentless, clothes-allergic little dimwits’, which is not how I find them to be. ‘I take Piers with a pinch of salt,’ Jesy says, rolling her eyes. ‘He does it to cause drama, so I take no notice. When we won The X Factor, we didn’t look like a generic girl band: we’re all different shapes and sizes, we didn’t dress sexy, so immediately everyone was, “What’s this?”’ ‘Usually, when you see a girl band, they’re perfection, they have six-packs – and we didn’t,’ continues Jesy. ‘People saw us as kids, so even though we’re now women, people still think of us that way, so when we come out on stage in leotards, they think, “That’s disgusting!”’ ‘One Direction didn’t get the s**t we get, because they’re men,’ states Leigh-Anne. ‘It’s like, “They’re four girls, let’s come at them”. As soon as it’s girls, they think, “Oh you slag.”’ ‘When it’s men, it’s celebrated, but the minute women sexualise themselves and feel powerful doing it, we’re told to rein it in,’ adds Jade. ‘We’re conditioned to think that women are there to be these innocent and pure beings and the minute you step out of that, it’s carnage.’ Little Mix, however, are not scared of embracing that carnage and of sparking a debate. For their show The Search, Jade describes how it was important for them to set the tone on respect when each new person auditioned. ‘Because we are small women, it’s important to show people that they need to respect us, that we know what we’re talking about and we need to be listened to,’ she says. ‘There’s no nastiness,’ continues Jesy about the show, which has been praised for modernising and freshening up the age-old TV format. ‘There’s no making anyone feel uncomfortable for entertainment.’ They also insisted a large part of their budget be dedicated to looking after the contestants’ mental health, understanding, first hand, the pitfalls of talent shows. The Search is not their first attempt at diversifying their talent. As a group, they have LMX make-up line and also a perfume, Style By Little Mix. Subsequently, they have become expert businesswomen, refusing to make the mistakes of pop groups past, so often left completely penniless at the end of their careers. ‘I remember walking into an early label meeting and saying, “This is who we want to be, this is the campaign we want, this is the imagery we want,”’ says Jade. ‘We knew our brand from the get go and we very much steered that ship.’ It’s a long way from their (as Jesy puts it) ‘working-class backgrounds’. Since joining the band, each one has bought their mum a house and, while their tale is not entirely rags to riches, the jump from Primark to Prada in recent years has certainly been significant. When it comes to business, Perrie describes herself and Leigh-Anne as the ones who will often seek a compromise in difficult situations, while they send Jesy and Jade in when deals need to be made. ‘Jesy’s the badass,’ Perrie laughs. ‘Whenever I’m scared, I’ll stand behind her. She’s the one who puts her foot down in a boardroom full of men and says, “It’s going to be this way.” But we pick our battles. We don’t just argue about every decision – it’s when we feel we have to.’ ‘Nobody could say that we are difficult, and if they do, they’re lying,’ says Leigh-Anne adamantly. Adds Jesy: ‘We know what we want, and we know what kids want.’ Little Mix have lived over a third of their lives in the spotlight. They’ve seen how things work, how things don’t, and they’ve learnt how to cope with it all. The lows may have been spectacularly low, but the highs have surpassed any of their expectations. Their story is not your classic fairytale, but it’s one they have learnt they can write their own ending for. If the Little Mix I meet today is anything to go by, I wouldn’t expect that ending to come any time soon. Little Mix’s new album Confetti is out now. Their movie LM5: The Tour Film will be in cinemas nationwide on 21 and 22 November.

slip 'n sliding
hi! this is ay :D i wrote a silly lil six!broadway fic about bo sliding around the house as a dupe for heelys HAHAH so i hope y'all enjoy it!
-
Anne’s white Heelys, which she customized with mint and forest green acrylic paint, are her most prized possessions. The online algorithm randomly showed her the shoes one day, and before she knew it, the fun-loving queen had fallen down a rabbit hole of videos, different tricks, and the available styles on the website. But from the first day she got them, Jane had been unwavering on the sentiment that they are never to be worn in the house. Never.
Of course, she’d tried to fight her (in Anne’s opinion, sometimes overly) cautious friend on this new “rule.”
“You’ll hurt yourself, Bo!” Jane exclaimed, fidgeting with a random hair tie that was on her wrist.
Anne smiled in response, “No, I won’t. I’ve got perfect control over my fine motor skills like any adult would.”
“Yeah, but your abilities change when you’re on wheels!”
“Which is exactly why I should be able to practice, Jane. It’s the only way to get better,” she replied cheekily.
“Yes, I know and I agree. Just not in the house.”
“Why?”
Jane shook her head in disbelief, “I literally just said because you’d hurt yourself.”
“To which I replied I wouldn’t.”
“Fine. But you’re clumsy and might break something, Bo, and I do not want to have to deal with repairs.”
“Alright, alright,” Anne laughed, “I got it.”
Therefore, for a couple of weeks now, Anne has been walking around the house like an absolute plebeian. How boring, just taking one step after another! Not to mention how slow walking felt after having tasted the thrill of Heelys. Why anyone would opt to do that instead of (kind of) gracefully gliding around will forever be beyond Anne’s comprehension.
One day, while walking back to her bedroom after a day out with her cousin, Anne slipped slightly on the hardwood floor. Okay, maybe it seems obvious, but it suddenly clicked with Anne how smooth hardwood floors can be. The smoother a surface is, the less friction is produced when another surface rubs against it. Ding! Anne had an epiphany.
She quickly deposited all the belongings she’d brought out with her onto her bedroom floor and rushed back down the stairs, keeping only her phone and AirPods on her. To make sure the coast was clear, Anne checked the living room, the kitchen, any weird nooks, everywhere. When she was content in her checks, it was show time.
From her back jean pockets, the mischievous queen pulled out her phone and AirPods, pressing shuffle on her playlist of songs aptly titled “songs that make me feel like a professional dancer…oh wait, duh, i do dance professionally!” Once the music started playing, Anne mouthed along to the lyrics, losing herself in the rhythms. To get herself comfortable with the wood floors, Anne did a couple of test slides down the hallway downstairs.
“I got this!” she declared with a whisper. The music was turned up a little louder, and Anne tossed her phone onto the couch. Now it’s time, time to go to town surfing the hardwood floors and performing her own dance routines. There were a handful of times where she lost her balance and slipped, but it was never anything she couldn’t smoothly recover from with an extra twirl or bounce in her step.
However, after a little too long getting lost in her music, Anne got a little too cocky. For no rational reason, she decided to get a long running start and see how long she could surf the floor in a straight line. So, with Levitating by Dua Lipa flowing through her headphones, she sprinted for a couple of paces before placing her right foot in front of her left and cruising…until she stopped abruptly with a thud.
“What was that?” someone yelled. Anne continued to rub the part of her head that made contact with the wall whilst turning around to see her housemates rush down the stairs.
“Don’t tell me you walked into the wall, Bo,” giggled Kitty, covering her mouth with her hand to try and hide her amusement.
Cleves plopped down onto the couch, “How can someone walk into a wall so hard that it shakes the whole house.”
“Nuh uh,” Aragon chimed in, “that doesn’t seem possible for someone of Anne’s stature.” Both Cleves and Anne responded with a slightly offended, “Hey!” to which the other four laughed at playfully.
“I didn’t walk into a wall, alright! I’m not daft,” Anne sat down as well.
“Then, why are you rubbing your head like you hurt yourself?” Parr asked.
Jane scoffed in disbelief, “Were you wearing Heelys in the house?”
“Um, look at my feet. No, I wasn’t,” everyone glanced down at Anne’s feet just to make sure.
“Girl, don’t tell me you skated into the wall with socks on!” Cleves exclaimed. When Anne’s cheeks started to color, her friends bursted into laughter again. Except Jane.
“I cannot believe you, Bo. I try an prevent injury in this house, and you just have to find away around it,” chastised Jane, though Anne could tell by the smile on her friend’s face that Jane wasn’t actually as mad as she let on.
“You can’t ban socks from the house too, Jane!”
“Oh baby, just try me. I don’t want to see you covered in bruises,” her blonde friend called out as she walked into the kitchen. She returned an icepack for the queen who’d gotten herself injured, and held it against Anne’s forehead.
“I got it,” Anne placed her hand on the icepack, signaling for Jane to remove hers, “I’ll be more careful, I swear.”
Kitty picked up Anne’s phone from the couch cushion, “I don’t blame you for getting carried away, Bo. Levitating is laced with crack!”
“Could one get arrested for Heely-ing while being intoxicated?” Anne teased.
Jane immediately shot back, “Don’t you dare try!”
“Fine, but only because I love you too much to borrow bail money from you.”
Their house mom rubbed her temples, feigning a headache, “You’re lucky I love you too, Bo.”

Masterpost!
If I missed one let me know, I’ll find it.
All of my works are below, including the ones salvaged from the lost blog. Some of these are AO3 links only, but the majority are all Tumblr.
Legend of the Six (AO3 Link)
The Six are a legendary group of warriors who have one goal in mind - usurp the Glorious King Henry VIII. This - for better or for worse - is their story, told by the survivors and friends who knew of them.
The Ink in Which We Inscribe Our Lives is Indelible
(AO3 link here)
It was years into their second lives when Catherine Parr decided to write down the queen’s origins in the modern era.
Lost and Found (AO3 Only)
She sees her, Catherine Parr swears she sees her. Her little Mary.
A Guide To Modern English (all chapters, AO3 Only)
In which Katherine Howard learns the more... creative... words of the modern day.

Part 2 (Tumblr) (AO3)
Part 3 (Tumblr) (AO3)
Limit Break
The girl stayed up all night, one terrifying thought on her mind. She had even gone into Jane’s room to sleep with her, hoping the presence of the other woman would ward off the thoughts… but it seemed to only make things worse. She decided, next day, to put her fears to the test.
Phantoms Can’t Help Me More Than You
They wouldn’t care, she convinces herself. It’ll be fine. She looked down at the not-busy street; barely anyone was on it. It was as if the world was frozen for the moment, and it was just her. Or, at least, it would have been, if it wasn’t for a woman in gold.
Under Stars We Both Can See
“Oh, hi, Jane.” Katherine perks up immediately and sits up on the couch, leaning against the backrest as she stares over it to look at Catherine Parr, who was currently on the phone with whom she can only assume is one person. “How’s Greece?”
Cruise Queens Verse
Fight Like A Queen (Jane and Anne-centric)
Seymour and Aragon save Katherine at the Bar
Active vs Reactive

Born in 1854 in Brooklyn, his father, Alfred Smith Barnes, was the principal in the leading textbook publishing house in the nation, A. S. Barnes & Co. Richard was educated at the Gunnery School in Washington, Connecticut; the Williston Seminary in East Hampton, Massachusetts; and finally at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He initially entered his father's business, moving to Chicago to manage that branch of the firm. In 1880 he married Hattie Day Barbour of Harford. Around the time of his father's death in 1888 he returned to New York; Richard's brother, Alfred C. Barnes took over the family business. While Richard remained a director in the company (which grew into the conglomerate American Book Company); he branched out into myriad professional interests. He became treasurer of Braunworth & Co., printers, and secretary and treasurer of the Barnes Real Estate Association. He invested heavily in mining and was treasurer of the Automatic Fire Alarm Company. Richard and Hattie had three children, Goodrich (who tragically died at the age of 12), Hattie Louise and Roderic Barbour Barnes. Their Washington, Connecticut country home, Westlawn, was a sprawling Queen Anne-style riot of gables and porches and chimneys.

In 1895 ground was broken for the Barnes's new city home at No 316 West 75th Street, just steps from Riverside Drive. Richard had hired one of Manhattan's premier mansion architects, C. P. H. Gilbert, to design a 38-foot wide residence--nearly double the width of a standard home. Construction took two years and resulted in an impressive five-story residence faced in cream-colored Roman brick and trimmed in limestone. Gilbert splashed his Renaissance Revival design with Beaux Arts touches--like torches, swags and lions' heads above the fourth floor openings, and the eye-catching oculus over the service entrance. While other architects strove to downplay doorways where deliverymen and servants came and went, Gilbert fronted this one with grand iron gates and carved Renaissance style gateposts and lavished its round window with cornucopia.
Sadly abused as a repository for trash today, the service entrance was given grand treatment by C. P. H. Gilbert. Note the individualized carvings of the gate posts.
The second floor featured tall French windows with balconettes. The center opening of the rounded bay wore an elaborate stone hood, the tympanum of which overflowed with foliate carvings and a crest. (Close inspection reveals a dog standing proudly above that crest.) The bay provided a stone-balustraded balcony to the fourth floor. A stone cornice supported by foliate brackets completed the design.

The Barnes family's upscale lifestyle was reflected in Richard's entering steeds in the fashionable New York Horse Show, in his memberships in the New England Society of New York, the Metropolitan Club and the Down Town Association. The names of Manhattan's wealthy routinely appeared in print as they boarded steamships headed to Europe. But that was not the case when Richard and Hattie climbed aboard the Hamburg-American vessel Moltke on January 10, 1903. They were embarking on a pleasure cruise--a forerunner of today's popular ocean cruises. The New-York Tribune reported the ship would visit the principal islands in the West Indies and Nassau. The ports of call would be familiar to vacationers taking a cruise today--St. Thomas, San Juan, Kingston, Jamaica and Nassau among others.

On September 17, 1904 Richard and Hattie announced the engagement of Hattie Louise to Alfred Severin Bourne. The New-York Tribune noted as well, "Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, whose country home is Westlawn, Washington, Conn., spent the early part of the summer in Europe." While Bourne's family was immensely wealthy (the newspaper called their Oakdale home "one of the finest country places in Long Island"), there were indications that the young man was a bit of a playboy. The 21-year old groom-to-be had inherited $1 million from his godfather, Corman Clark, that year and another half million on the interest that had accumulated on the fund prior to his coming of age. The New-York Tribune put a positive spin on his dropping out of school by saying "He entered Yale about a year ago, but preferred a business career." Hattie Louise had debuted into society the previous winter. In the summer of 1904 Alfred's parents celebrated his "coming of age" at Oakdale with events that rivaled the most lavish of debutante entertainments. The Sun commented "There were luncheons, dinners and dances ashore and afloat." The wedding took place in the West End Collegiate Church on West End Avenue just two blocks north of the Barnes residence the following spring. The social importance of the event was evidenced by the guest list. The New-York Tribune reported on April 17, 1905, "Some of those invited to the wedding were President and Mrs. Roosevelt, Admiral and Mrs. George Dewey, Rear Admiral and Mrs. W. S. Schley, Bishop and Mrs. Potter, General and Mrs. Stewart L. Woodford, Mr. and Mrs. W. Bayard Cutting, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bliss and Mrs. W. S. P. Prentice." The reception took place in the 75th Street mansion. Roderic married Rose Marie Naething six years later, in September 1911, in the fashionable Church of the Heavenly Rest on Fifth Avenue. Roderic would go on to a promising career as an architect.

On Christmas Day, 1913, Richard Storrs Barnes died in the 75th Street house at the age of 59. The Bookseller estimated his estate to be "at least $500,000." That amount would approach $13 million today. Hattie remained in the residence and following her period of mourning resumed her social activities. Her name appeared in society columns as she visited fashionable watering holes like the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Perhaps the most unusual gathering which she hosted in the residence occurred in the spring of 1917. The highly-popular evangelist Billy Sunday was in town and on May 17 he enthralled a crowd of 18,000 with his unorthodox retelling of the story of how Jesus reformed the tax collector Zaccheus. According to The Sun's report, he said in part: There were a lot of the old guys discussin' Jesus--and they were mostly leaving the dis off--and Zaccheus, who was a rich gazabo of a Jew, wanted to get a good look at Him, so he shinnied up a tree. Well, when Jesus passed right under the three old Zac slid down and Jesus said to him: 'This day I'll abide at thy house.' He didn't even wait for Zaccheus to invite Him. He just said He'd come on over for dinner with him." The reverend paused to consider the wife of Zaccheus. "Gee, I'll bet she was a fine kind of woman not to mind havin' all that bunch drop in on her just at dinner time and nothing to eat but some canned goods." But before that gargantuan event, the preacher had been at the Barnes house. "In the morning Billy delivered a short talk before 300 women and a few men in the home of Mrs. Richard S. Barnes, 316 West Seventy-fifth street. Following the evangelist Mrs. Sunday said a few words." Hattie became involved with the Women's American Oriental Club of New York City. It was founded in April 1915 "to promote friendliness and mutual understanding between women of the Orient and women of America." By 1920 she was its president.
Although heavily abused, the carved newels still stand guard.
In the meantime, Hattie Louise's husband's playboy ways had caught up with him and landed the family name in scandalous newspaper reports. The New-York Tribune's article on December 29, 1918 started out complimentary enough. "Mr. Bourne is a member of the New York Yacht Club, St. Anthony Club and the National Golf Links. His father, Frederick G. Bourne, formerly commodore of the New York Yacht Club, is one of the best known yachtsmen in the United States." But then the article got to the juicier parts. Bourne had been carrying on a relationship with Grace B. Clark, who freely visited the best shops of Manhattan, charging her purchases to Bourne. The illicit affair became public when Grace's bill with the dressing making house of Hickson, Inc., became inordinate--approaching half a million in today's dollars. Pressed for payment, Bourne made a deal to pay $500 a month. But then he stopped payments with a balance of $11,199 still due. Hickson, Inc. sued, Bourne did not attempt to defend himself, and the newspapers eagerly printed the shocking story. Hattie Barnes was 64-years old when she sold No. 316 to the H. M. C. Realty Company, Inc. in 1924. The handsome mansion she and her husband had built more than a quarter of a century earlier was converted to "non-housekeeping apartments," meaning they had no kitchens. The building had few notable tenants. In the 1940's bandleader Jimmy Victor lived here. His advertisement in Billboard magazine in October 1948 announced "Now arranging 1949 indoor and outdoor dates, Jimmy Victor's Show Band." In the 1950's an apartment here was used as the headquarters for the New York Regional Advisory Board of the Society of St. Dismas. The group described its goal as "to aid imprisoned and released prisoners." To that end it furnished reading material to penal institutions and aided released prisoners to find employment and homes. Gay activist Brenda Howard lived in the building in 1972 when she was arrested on June 7. Firefighter Michael Maye was accused of beating a member of the Gay Activist Alliance on April 15 that year. Before his court hearing, she and two other activists created that The New York Times called "a disturbance" in the courtroom. Apparently Brenda was less combative than her companions. While her charges were later dismissed, the other two were held to stand trial on charges of "assault, resisting arrest, harassment and obstructing government administration."
The former elegance of the Barnes mansion manages to triumph over window air conditioners, a commercial-style doorway, and decades of dirt.
