Pyrophoric Chemical Safety

Any chemical that catches fire spontaneously when exposed to air (at or below 130F (54.4C)) can be classified as a pyrophoric chemical, though only those that do so in under 5min are classified as such under GHS guidelines. These can include solids, liquids, and gases. Because pyrophoric chemicals are reacting with the oxygen in the air, they are also typically water reactive. As will all general guidelines, specifics can vary from chemical to chemical, however, the following is typically true of handling pyrophoric chemicals. Individuals should wear flame-resistant lab coats/PPE and clothing made from polyester or other synthetic fabrics should be avoided. Pyrophoric chemicals are considered hazardous and should be treated as such during storage, handling (typically in a fume hood or glove box), and disposal. Examples of pyrophoric chemicals include alkali metals (e.g., potassium, sodium), metal powders, metal carbonyls, and many hydrides.

first of all i'm just going to plug myself because why not. i have 78 swan queen works up - mostly oneshots, a couple longfics, including the fic i'm currently writing, change with the seasons. a lot of my fics are older (for example my 52 weeks of swan queen series was written in 2015) and i was a teenager when i wrote them, but i still find a lot of joy in them!!

now for the rest of the recs, i'm going to organize them as best i can into a few categories. also, a lot of these recs will be a bit older as i've been away from the fandom for a while, and am only just now coming back again. this is an open question if anyone else has recommendations to add in the reblogs!!!

satin town by @coalitiongirl is probably my all time favorite fanfic, period. everything she's written for the fandom is incredible, but this one has always stuck with me. the dynamic between emma and regina (who is in full on evil queen mode) is just DELICIOUS and i love how she worked henry into the story. an absolute must as far as i'm concerned. PLUS she has a whole NOVEL out now, so go support that if you like the fic!!!!

the secret's in the telling by @the-pyrophoric-one is another classic in the fandom, and for good reason. the characterization is so spot on, and i absolutely love the arc of this story. the chapters are suuuuuper long though so it's a time investment!!

somewhere, someone must know the ending by maleficently who is not on tumblr as far as i'm aware is a divorce au. lots of angst with a happy ending. the same author also wrote an incredible three-part series called the fatal plunge, which remains, tragically, unfinished.

you gotta play dirty by amycarey who i'm not tagging because they don't write fic anymore. there's so many fics by amycarey that i absolutely adore (temporary distractions and keep the wolves outside by living well are also up there!!) but i chose this one because it's so unique to me. it's an au in which emma and regina are in a concert band together. i was a band kid myself, specifically a clarinetist, so i was pretty geeked over this!!

all that glitters is not (olypmic) gold by @queststar is another super niche but super fun and well-written au. in this one, emma and regina are olympic speed skaters. i just love the competitive energy between the two of them and the arc as they grow closer and eventually fall for each other. the author even got elizabeth mitchell to read some of it which is just. next level.

one fine star away by @bytherosebushlaughing is another au that gets a little meta, but it's sooooo much fun. in this fic, once upon a time is a tv show that regina, emma, and the others starred in. 20 some years later, the cast is reuniting, and the reunion is being covered by none other than one henry mills. it's such a clever fic, and i absolutely love it so far!!

oneshots:

of love and loss and love again by @snowivyimconfusi oh this one. this one is so bittersweet. emma and regina, grieving the losses of their partners, find comfort in each other. and more. it's so beautifully done, and i just adore ivy's writing style!!

what you thought you had to do by hoovahhoopah is the very first fic i read after making my ao3 account and it's still one that i love!! it's part of a six part series of oneshots called ill fitting pieces, but it also stands on its own just as well. just a beautiful, classic, canon-but-make-it-better kind of fic.

a woman moves when her heart has been broken by etotheswan because who among us wasn't absolutely destroyed by the season 3 finale???? this offered a lot of swan queen based catharsis while we waited for season 4.

monster-in-law by seriousfic is just a funny, light-hearted little oneshot about mary margaret trying to stop emma and regina's wedding by reminding them that they're all sort of related. a big departure from the seriousfic work we all know and miss dearly..... but enjoyable nonetheless thanks to their talent!!

Happy Storyteller Saturday! Biggest dragon species in Ascendancy?

If you dont include the Gods themselves, then out of all the dragon species the largest is the almost extinct people that once fed off of Exitiums divinity: The Dragonfolk

They are a type of divine thing, like Griffins and Humonculi; who don't function like a mortal thing but they aren't Gods. A divine is a good term I suppose. Unlike other divine however they can reproduce.

After Exitium was almost killed and went into dormancy, their population dipped down from around 100 individuals down to a mere 10.

Even before that their population took a massive hit after a parasite that looked like golden flecks ravaged their bodies. They, and their sister species, the Draken (Known in 'modern' culture as the First Drakes) could not remove these scale parasites through fire nor picking them off themselves. Exitium for this reason relented into allowing a human population under his rule. The humans were small and dexterous enough to pull each parasite from under the scales of their dragon lords.

There are only a handful of these giants left, ones that have survived the ages through finding pockets of magic to feast upon. On the rare occasion, a Dragon will return to its homeland of Aiman to lay an egg after storing up immense energy- enough to last them the process and enough to supply its single young with enough yolk to last them until their first flight.

They are a rather typical dragon in a lot of ways. They carry pyrokinesis but some do have other forms of magic much how other folk have many types of blessings by their gods that have carried through their bloodlines. They also have a tendancy towards hoarding and once they lived very luxurious lives when they reigned over what was once Enkavaima (The territory that was taken over by the Anemoians)

Design wise, I'm thinking of shrinking their heads a bit, making them a tad smaller and making their wings look like oversized an albatross' wings. I also want to change their markings to look closed to an albatross mixed with an orca. Something something metaphors and symbolism

As for ANIMALS though, the largest is the Major Pinnae dragons. They are about the size of a tiger if you dont count their tails or wings- males being 5 ft from head to tail base and the females upwards of 7.5 ft They are the apex predator of Anemoi, and Pinna's favourite creation. They have reflective wings and stripes they use both in complex hunting habits and mating rituals

They can spit out a Pyrophoric chemical that allows them to breathe fire in a sense. This chemical acts like napalm and sticks to things. The fire is difficult to put out without the use of water to dilute it, as the fuel will just re-ignite in the presence of air and water vapour until its burnt up.

hope i’m not just shouting into the void here, but I need help finding a specific SwanQueen fic I read years ago, and i’ve tried everything i can think of to no avail.

Best i can remember it’s pretty long, canon divergent, with an element of time travel. Weird, lots of twists, and I just can’t get it out of my head.

It’s been years so my details are spotty, but I specifically remember that Regina is in danger and this mysterious figure keeps popping up to save her. They wear a hoodie and have a flaming sword? and maybe ride a motorcycle?? Emma is staying with Regina for some reason, maybe to protect her, and i think the hood person breaks in, and steals her clothes. Just in general they’re doing some stalkery things.

Fast forward, these strange series of events lead to some sort of final showdown, and the hooded figure disappears after saving the day, but at the end there’s a big reveal where the person pulls the hood back and reveals that it was emma all along thanks to some time travel shenanigans, and she has to go back in time and do everything the hooded figure did in order to save regina, and then she has to like.. wait in a trailer in the woods for a couple months?

I think she’s in bad shape at the end, and Regina is looking for her for a while. Some angst, some hurt/comfort.

I don’t know, it’s very fuzzy but this is killing me, i need to find it. Last ditch effort, SwanQueen fans i need your help

On fire sacs

This post will be frequently discussing urination in Pokemon with flame organs, and so I will be placing it under this cut.

Did you know that no two Arcanine have exactly the same fire? Humans cannot tell the difference, but many Pokemon can. This gives every Arcanine a distinct scent to their fire, and their droppings, which they use in the wild to mark their territory.

I spoke before that Arcanine need a great deal of water every day, but I did not get deeply into the details. Most, though not all, Pokemon capable of emitting fire have a special organ in their body in which the fire is created.

It is more accurate to say that the organ creates a heated pyrophoric gas. Specifically, a special phosphoric compound that has yet to be recreated out of a Pokemon's biology, which in its gaseous state has a temperature of over 120 degrees Celsius. These compounds ignite upon exposure to the air, and so a Pokemon breathing flames is actually exhaling this gas through a special epliglottal cover, with an extra sphincter that prevents any air from getting back in.

However, temperatures that high could be hazardous to the Pokemon's other organs, and so it is kept insulated through a two-layer system. On the inside, a layer of fat, and on the outside, a special bladder filled with waste water. The water in this bladder acts as a heat sink, absorbing excess heat through the fat, which is then excreted. In other words, the Pokemon urinates out water that has become too hot, and must replenish it. This means that their urine possesses traces of the phosphoric compounds, though dissembled such that they no longer ignite.

Most Pokemon with a flame sac will operate under similar mechanisms. Torchic, Fletchinder, and similar avian Pokemon who do not urinate, instead have the waste mixed in with their feces. This removes the heat from their body, and the head below them can offer an updraft to allow them to take off easier.

A Pokemon with a flame sac who marks its territory with urine (Arcanine, Typhlosion, etc) will have the aforementioned dissembled compounds in their urine. This provides a unique scent to each Pokemon, acting as a fingerprint of sorts, to warn off competition from their territory. But this is also necessary to cool themselves.

If you find a Fire-type Pokemon is having difficulty with its urination, or urinating too much, or if it has runny feces, this can often mean it is having difficulty maintaining its insulation. Check the amount of water, and make sure it has enough. Furthermore, check your local neighborhood. Sometimes, if a Pokemon smells the scent left by one of the same species whose scent is stronger, they will not wish to urinate at all, as they will feel afraid and do not wish to invade the territory of another. This will cause a whole host of health problems if left untreated.

There is a whole host more to say, but this is already a very long post on a very niche subject. Still, I have but one point to make.

Make sure your Pokemon drink enough water. I have treated so many dehydrated Fire-types who were about to cook their own organs because their owner believed that 'a weakness to water' meant they should not drink as much. Type does not matter. Your Pokemon need water, and often a greater amount of it than you believe.

And, for that matter, so do you. Stay hydrated.

Elemental phosphorus can exists in different colours and it depends on how atoms arrange in the space and this forms are called allotropes.

In white phosphorus, yellow phosphorus or tetraphosphorus (P4), atoms forms a tetrahedron and this form is very unstable. It's pyrophoric (self-igniting) so very dangerous that's why is used as a weapon. When is exposed to oxygen it glows green in the dark.

White phosphorus is toxic, causing severe liver damage on ingestion and phossy jaw (necrosis of the jaw) from chronic ingestion or inhalation. In case of a small dose ingestion or exposition it's metabolized to phosphate, which is not toxic.

In the case of Stapleton, he probably dissolved it in some odourless oil. Benzene, carbon disulfide, and disulfur dichloride can be used too but those chemicals have strong smell. He used a few times so that's why he didn't have any health problems related, but there was the risk of ignition or explosion so he was lucky. Lucky until the bog devoured him.

White phosphorus is the same chemical that Dr. John Brown and Tita used to write in the walls in the book Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel.

It's not fucking pyrophoric. we poured out a beaker of it in solution and left it in the fume hood to prove it isn't pyrophoric.
