this post reminded me of something that's been rattling around in my brain since the first time i watch vol 2 & i still have yet to see anyone else really talk about this so i guess i have to now before it makes me insane:

the way that el not being able to find max in the void is revealed.

she finds the empty coke bottle she & max used to decide who to spy on in s3 under her old bed in the cabin, and when she spins it, it transitions to her alone in the void (or something like that, it's been a while since i last watched this scene).

the fact that she spins the bottle always really stuck out to me, even the first time i watched this scene. like idk it feels more significant than just a cool transition. it feels like el is making a decision here.

obviously, when she looks for max in the void, she's trying to make sure that max is okay. but i can't help but think that there's something more to it, that maybe el was looking for max to bc she wanted reassurance that it's okay for her to break up with mike (just like mike tries to get from will throughout s4, as the post i linked earlier points out).

it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that max will give her that reassurance, but if el can't get to max, then spinning that old coke bottle might just be the next best thing.

okay a bit (a lot, tldr in tags) of rambling to gather my thoughts, but for the dog coded bucky fic <3 enjoyers i have tentatively decided:

i will finish chapter two so ik it's # serious lol, plan out the rest of the chapters so i make sure i don't need to change anything in the first two (bc i'm still not even sure how many chapters it'll be), and then, i think i will force myself to stop being a Coward and post ch1 🫠

but i DO want to warn you that i am a slow writer, i've said this before ik, but i haven't written a chaptered fic in about five years so i'm really not sure how my pacing will be, so i feel like it's fair to lyk in advance!

my ideal aim would be to get a chapter out once a week, but i'm gonna be so real, a more realistic goal is once every two–ish weeks because me + freshly–medicated adhd + writing is not conducive to productivity lmaoo :')) tbh i'd be happy if i even got one done a month but i'm hoping to be faster than that, i just also don't want to rush bc this fic is so close to my heart already, i don't want to put smth out where i feel like i let myself/readers down. <3

Kurumi's image color is initially just Crimson Red, but we eventually decided to add pink (because red clashes with Enma's, another "boss" character), so she has two colors now. Though we haven't edited it in her wiki yet because we don't know what exact shade of pink to use yet.

Kana reminding you of Ach/eron, feels so right tbh hahaha Two of her early inspirations are actually Rai/den Sho/gun (Gen/shin) and Rai/den Mei (Hon/kai). One of her prominent voice claims were also Sawashi/ro Miyu/ki! So you're very on-point!! hehe 😆😆

I'm surprised there isn't much presence of yakuza families in canon considering that the story took place in Ja/pan! So, I'm so happy to see that @melonchanverse also has yakuza family ocs!! 😭💖✨ *holds yakuza neighbors au in my hands softly* I will draw this someday, soon.

he doesn't like soup, this is referencing meng po's soup, which is drank by the dead to remove their memories of hell and their previous life in order to move on. xxv remembers both his previous life and his experience in hell so i wonder...

his birthday is 7/7 on the lunar calendar (he is a leo 🤔). this is also the qixi festival! part of the story associated with this festival is that magpies formed a bridge across the sky, and xxv is vaguely bird-associated.

xxv, despite not really caring for the well-being of other players, has a soft spot for children because he had younger siblings in his past life. at least, thats what nightingale claims 🤔

might've already been noticed but he has red nails! there's no real reason i just thought it looked cool.

despite the reasons not to* i kind of wanted ithaqua and xxv to meet because it'd be funny. like xxv is not similar to nathaniel when you put them next to each other but he's also just similar enough that him and ithaqua would kind of grate on each other. i want them to play tractor because it involves teamwork (and bc theres no hard rules also they're someone exempt from rules + someone punished by them). they're not on the same team, i just want to see what strategies they would come up with. * i feel like the chapter kind of closed when ithaqua killed nathaniel so i dont really want those two to meet, bc ithaqua's moved on from nathaniel and possibly even forgot him considering his possible amnesia. ^ also ithaqua is dealing with some sort of amnesia (kinda hinted at through his mentions of memories and forgetting), while xxv claims amnesia in an attempt to willfully ignore his past. both of them have a somewhat skewed perception of reality and it'd be interesting to see how they interact. but i think itha would dislike him 🤔 despite not knowing who xxv hangs out with he can still clock him as a liar and a coward.

lucky guy is friends (ish) with xxv, but it actually started out a bit more mentor-like because xxv was implied to also be from a different time setting, plus he's a few years his junior so lucky guy feels a bit like he should guide someone greener than him 🤔. even though their relationship gets a bit strained, i want their friendship to persevere... xxv should behave and be wiser maybe...

This is part of the greater Xuyao (yes Wen Xu and Meng Yao, no I'm not sorry, they're immensely shippable if you're not a coward) 'choose your own adventure' verse where I basically lose my mind and create diverging timelines in almost all of which Meng Yao suffers terribly bc Meng Yao whump is weirdly easy to write

The cyoa thread for this is 'Wen Xu dies as in canon and Wen Chao decides he wants Meng Yao for himself' -> 'Wen Chao dies as in canon, WRH continues to let everyone else abuse MY' -> 'NMJ conceals the way MY has been treated so no one knows'

All the titles from the greater Xuyao cyao fic come from the The Amazing Devil song "Battle Cries", which I chose mostly because there was a cool lyric for the first fic back when it was supposed to be a one-shot, but also loads of the lyrics from the song work really well

I picked "I know I've been through the wars" for this chapter because unlike in the alternate branch of this fic where everyone finds out, only MY (and NMJ, to a certain extent) have any idea of what exactly MY has been through. Which is good because his trauma isn't being gossiped about! But is also Bad because people who him to be happy (people = LXC) keep accidentally making things worse :3

which then my few beloved commenters were like 'this is so evil!' and i was like 'it's not even that bad' and they were like 'YES it IS', but angst is my default at this point for some reason so I didn't notice oops

At the end MY runs away from the banquet to hide. There's currently one sequel branch for this (NMJ goes to find him and is actually helpful for once (this is largely NHS' fault)). I have some plans for another branch (LXC goes to find him and continues to try to help without knowing the problem) but the way my brain was taking it was almost Too Dark for me so I haven't written it (yet). I might. Or I might be nice to MY for once and have LXC go and actually find out the problem. But then I'd be being nice so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So when I wrote the first Xuyao installment I really wanted to write but my brain wasn't clicking so I put the sunshot generation into a random name picker, spun it a bunch of times, and decided Meng Yao and Wen Xu would be interesting (it was going to just be a creepy dark fic and then I wrote like three sentences and went oh. it's a love story. oops)

ANYWAY a few months later when I was bored I spun the wheel a bunch more times so now I have a Selection of rare pairs for whenever I feel like it

Basically my initial thoughts were "jin zixun gets bullied into going to war by his cousin and then gets his gay awakening when he gets shouted at my nie mingjue" and yeah I guess that Happened

The title is a lyric from "Helpless" from Hamilton and was @nemainofthewater's fault/idea, which I thank her sincerely for because I hate titling things. I also think it's really funny

This was SUPPOSED to be a short crack one-shot but then wishthefish bullied/persuaded/encouraged to write more and it's annoyingly fun so now there are at least three chapters with the potential of more

Takes place within a mixture of show and book canons, whichever is funnier at any given moment

Really, if Jin Zixun is too busy being distracted by da-ge then no one is causing problems at the hunt and no one is getting murdered by out of control Wen Ning so like. This could very much solve all the problems

hello. as someone who knows nothing about antigone or classics in general, your tags on the tragedy poll greatly intrigued me. could you elaborate on why you feel that antigone shouldn't win the tournament/isn't the most tragic character in her play? /gq, i voted for doof, i'm actually curious bc i assumed most people who have read/seen antigone would naturally vote for her

disclaimer: i am not a classics major, nor am i particularly smart. with that in mind, i have some opinions

if you haven't read antigone, my very brief synopsis of the play:

antigone's father, the king, has died. her brothers have killed each other in a squabble for power. her uncle creon becomes king and decrees that as punishment for his actions, the corpse of one of antigone's brothers is not allowed to be buried and will instead be left out as carrion; the punishment for violating this decree is execution. antigone openly and repeatedly attempts to bury her brother anyways.

the majority of the play is a single conversation between antigone and creon about her actions. antigone's position is that creon has become a slave to his own power, and that when it comes to leaving her brother unburied, he is acting as though his hands are tied even though he has the power to reverse this law. she views him as a traitor to his family who is willing to abandon his ethics in order to cling to power. creon's position is that antigone is naive and idealistic, and willing to throw away her life to make a point even though she doesn't really know the details of the situation she's staking her life on (given that she's willing to die to defend a brother who, according to creon at least, is a huge piece of shit and didn't give a fuck about his family)

anyways. creon tries to convince antigone to back out of her attempts to force his hand but she won't: she wants him to either put his own niece to death, or admit that maybe the laws he made are kind of bullshit and that he has the power to reverse them. he refuses, and orders her to be immured. she commits suicide before this can happen. creon's only son, antigone's fiance, finds out she's dead and kills himself. creon's wife finds out her son is dead and also kills herself. the play ends with creon's entire family dead, creon's will to live gone, and creon just sort of resigning himself to going about his kingly duties anyways.

here is my opinion: both of these characters are right in their analyses of each other, and the end of the play itself is about their respective beliefs being taken to their most logical extremes.

antigone died, but she died rebelling against a system that she hated. she died making a valiant last stand, one that she already knew would kill her, one that would make her a martyr in the eyes of the public and made it clear what she believed in. regardless of whether or not she was right, whether or not she died for something worth dying for, she knew what she wanted and she got it. she chose how she wanted to die.

creon didn't die because, to put it bluntly, he is a coward. ironically, he is the only one of his family that lacks the courage to break out from under the yoke of his own laws, despite being literally the only person capable of changing them. he has damned himself to a life of hell, and he has done so knowingly and willingly; at the end of the play, after his entire family is left dead by his own hands, he doesn't even allow himself time to grieve, because that isn't what is required of him as a ruler. he's left with nothing, not even the sympathy of the audience. he has robbed himself of agency. none of this needed to happen, but he did it anyways.

antigone died with the catharsis of choice. creon lived, knowing the only person he could blame for his suffering was himself.

Alright so. for this whole thing to work they'd need to find a way to get rid of wasp's (i'm calling him that bc sinister mark is too long) powers, or to at least block them in some way. if he has them he'd definitely try to take over the world

what i was thinking of is, cecil keeps wasp locked up. he doesn't kill him because he thinks he can get away w using wasp. so he puts graysona device in wasp's brain that makes him feel a LOT of pain when he clicks a button (yes i did take this from the comics don't sue me)

remember the sea mosnter's scream from s2? and how it made mark feel sm pain he actually screamed?? holding his head like he's trying to keep the noise out??? yeah cecil weaponizes that to control wasp

the device is made so that if wasp somehow manages to take it off, it'll kill him. so he's pretty much stuck

every time he does smething Bad TM (like killing cecil's people) that thing is activated. it's basically torture

mark finds out that cecil kept wasp alive and didn't even tell him so he goes "yeah no" and breaks him out

he takes the thing that activates the device too because wasp's murdery personality is just too goddamn obvious. "okay i don't like cecil but he had a point w this one"

so wasp still has his powers, but is under the threat of Constant Torture, which means he actually has to be *gasp* nice!! his worst nightmare

because of shenanigans, they accidentally end up going to school. together. in the same class. they have to say they're twins (they hate it)

mark and wasp, in unison: since birth

random: alright, i walked into that one

they fight SO MUCH. ppl don't question it much bc they're """"siblings"""", but everyone is a little concerned for their mental health

everyone but mark's friends (they are concerned about his mental health, they just don't believe they're siblings). they think he's talking shit bc 1, mark has never had a twin brother and 2, he would never go so far with his insults holy shit (the self-hatred is strong with this one master)

wasp tries to kill mark in his sleep a lot, which leads to mark developing insomnia

i have a scene in my head where mark is hurt and passed out and wasp is watching him sleep, thinking "now. now is the time. do it"

but no matter how much he tells himself to finally fucking kill that alternate version of him he hates so much, his hands just don't move

when they finally do, we think he's actually going to kill him. instead, he just checks mark's temperature and gets up to keep watch until he wakes up

"why didn't you kill me?" "oh do you WANT me to kill you?? cause i can do it rn" "thanks but no"

they both hate each other so much, but it merges with hating themselves bc. they're the same person. what hurts one, hurts the other, no matter how different they are

wasp has to deal with being in his old home, the one he destroyed. in this universe, his mom is alive. his dad is gone. he has a little brother. the alternate version of him, the one he believes is a coward, has literally everything. friends, family. a social life: eve, amber, william, school. even when planning to destroy and kill everything and everyone that makes mark happy, he can't help but feel a llittle jealous. (his dad loved him in this reality. he's sure he did, even if mark says otherwise)

mark has to deal with the one person who represents everything he hates and fears about himself being in his home. he could destroy everything in just one second. he's unpredictable; he would do it if it meant getting away from him. but... he's also so lonely. in every universe, every version of mark grayson is evil. in every universe, he's just like his dad. and in every universe, he is completely alone, stuck in a horrible reality of his own making

if wasp gets a redemption arc, he'd still kill people, but only the ones who actually deserve it. mark doesn't like it, but hey, at least he's not trying to take over the world now??

imagine wasp gifting mark other people's body parts like a cat leaving a dead bird in your room. he hands him a still beating heart, and thinks, hateful, "you had this coming. you're keeping me here against my will. deal with the consequences"

they grow to care for each other but in a very fucked up way. they still hate each other don't get me wrong, but they would now kill for each other

wasp attempts to kill mark daily but obliterates anyone who even looks at him the wrong way. mark hates wasp w his entire soul but will not cecil even touch him, because "if you try to take him away i will destroy your entire fucking company. bitch"

everything wasp says and does gets mark to punch him. meanwhile, everything mark says and does makes wasp want to kill himself (is himself mark or wasp? we'll never know)

wasp: oh, mom is still alive. y'know, i killed her in my universe. i could do it again in yours

mark, slowly turning around with a murderous look in his face: what.

mark "i can fix him" grayson vs mark "i can make him worse" grayson. one of them will drag the other to their side kicking and screaming

it's a little haunting. for everyone, really. this not-mark acts just like mark. he smiles the same, laughs the same, frowns the same. his sense of humor is just like mark's. his puns are similar too. they wake up at the same hour, follow the same routines, like the same food. the differences could be hidden so easily. it makes you wonder which one is the one you're talking to, and how long it'll be before the one that is wrong takes your mark's place

they can finish each other's sentences. they are not happy about it

EVIL MARK, EVIL MARK, EVIL MARK!!! I want to be coherent about this season but please picture me foaming at the mouth and running on the walls. S2 being what if Mark's just like his Dad? Insanity. I love this show. Anyways, AU where an Evil!Mark tries to make Our!Mark worse, and Our!Mark tries to make the other better. Something something confronting your idea of the worst version of oneself. Plus, tweaked black and yellow costume because I saw it and immediately went murder hornet lookin' ass and knew I had to draw it. Evil ass Mark. Horrible. I think he should be dragged kicking and screaming into redemption.

First of all, I just wanted to thank you. Your blog has been such a safe space for me these past few days.

I honestly never thought something like this would happen but now that the dust has settled a bit and all the jokes have died down I'm feeling a little bad for Misha, because I know that there's a real possibility that he is bi. I mean people keep saying things like why would he say he's bi if he isn't?' Or why did the people at stands who know him personally accepted the whole coming out so easily? And the only thing that would make sense here is that he decided to take back his statement after he saw how big it got, and I don't blame him for being blindsided by this to be honest, spn barely ever makes the news. Why would those vultures hop on this of all things? I do feel like a lot of other people feel the same, I see them implying it in their tags but not going further, and I get it. People want to respect his words, but someone going back into the closet after not receiving the reaction they'd been expecting isn’t such a wild theory, hell, I bet a bunch of us had to go back to the closet as well when we felt unsafe.

And if by some miracle he is straight, I really don't get some people's reactions who feel like he's betrayed them or something. Did you only like this person because you thought he was queer? That's like supporting someone else only because they're a woman like you for example. It makes no sense. The people calling him homophobic are even more baffling. The worst thing he's done is, make gay jokes about himself? How does that hurt anyone? Again unless you've decided to support this person only because you thought he was queer, which feels very disingenuous. It's definitely not on the same level, as say, J*red making degrading gay jokes about other people. And not to mention the fact that Misha's always been like this? So no, he didn't queerbait you either. You just didn't put a limit to your parasocializing habits.

It's just been a tough couple of days for me, and not even entirely because of Misha to be honest, but because of how my fellow members of the community showed that you have to act a certain way to feel like you belong. I saw someone basically say that Misha is a coward for not coming out completely if he actually is bi, and as a closeted bisexual living in an unsafe and homophobic environment, that was really disheartening to read, and yes Hollywood is an unsafe environment, especially for a bisexual man.

I honestly think I'm going to take a break from this fandom, so many of my favorite people here have been disappointing me so much lately. I wanted to thank you again for your wonderful blog and hope you have a very nice day.💗

and it's hard, because you feel like in your heart still, despite him saying both queer things and straight comments over the years, you feel like he's still like... he still obviously belongs. also I mean, poly people are also under the queer umbrella, soooooooo....? we just gonna ignore that?

also straight isn't rigid either. straight is one of those identities people can use for a number of things.

privately, we don't know what's going on with him, so it's hard to make the argument 'this is someone who was forced back in the closet' but what I am standing firm on is the fact that he was forced to label himself at all. people will come back at me with the 'oh but he said it during the dinner' but even then, not really. a 'coming out' usually doesn't happen when you randomly answer a fan's interjection about raising a hand or something. he brought bisexuality up in the poll to the audience and the bisexuality and poets thing but really, it's no more damning than other things he's said.

he's said things that very much allude to 'i'm not a 0 on the kinsey scale' and he's said things that make you go oh okay he said he's straight.

but how straight lol. there are men out there who do call themselves straight but will still have had some kind of intimate interactions with a man, and not just platonically or whatever.

this is me speculating on his private situation which I don't really want to do but the point being is — the man was seeing his name, his ex-wife's name, and his children's names in these articles that are googlable, and reputable [somehow] and once it hit people magazine I think he truly may have started to panic.

and he made his labeling public, on the record, because he had no other choice.

so if he is actually privately out and about doing his thing, and isn't completely rigidly straight as a board — it's NOT cowardly to feel like you can't be yourself publically to the world, especially when other people are involved.

that's another thing i can't understand when people say he was a coward for 'not coming out if he actually as bi' because, no? the fandom on fandom discomfort that's growing every day is very distressing for many queer fans who don't know where they fall, and/or don't know how to address it publically to friends and family, or can't because of safety issues.

other people were getting involved with this. once his ex wife and kids are getting named, that's a whole other story. himself is one thing, but tabloid journalists are ruthless.

people think it's easy for Actormen to come out or allude to queerness and indeed maybe for SOME it is, but it's not the same for everyone. his own personal history wasn't on the line with these press articles, all his loved ones' were too.

Btw if you think it's easy for Actormen, please read this article by Colton Haynes. Trigger warnings for assault and homophobia but it's still a sad reality.

so i don't care if he's straight straight or queer but doesn't know how to define himself and goes with straight for protection or necessity, or if whatever. idk. i don't care.

he had to say it. there was no other choice for him. and you can never compare our situations with his 100% because i know i sure don't have to be worried that the new york post is going to write an article about me or people magazine or out magazine, bringing my family who likes to remain private out into the spotlight with me.

and it is what it is.

he's still the same person. he's never invalidated us, and any time he missteps he apologizes sincerely. and he listens, and he tries to learn. he also has foot in mouth disease which, I really don't feel like ANYONE in this fandom has ANY right to criticize him for because lordy. some of y'all are pretty queerphobic, biphobic — said some really awful things — except y'all don't have to worry about dragging your loved ones into a media and fandom melee and all your private details and relationships are about to become public.

*also when i'm saying 'you' i mean the royal You xD not you-you, nonny I promise <3

they're splitting the wicked movie into two films. supposedly putting anything after defying gravity would be 'anticlimactic' (unlike the year+ there will presumably be between the two films????) so they're just going to split it in two. If they weren't cowards they'd do an intermission right in the movie like in old movie musicals.

so it's almost 5783, so obviously it's time for a New Year's Project. @starrygazingpie and I have gotten a slightly early start, having decided that this year we're going to watch through all of Shakespeare. Naturally we started with Much Ado About Nothing (the Kenneth Branagh version, as we weren't able to find the Tennant one on anything we were already subscribed to). But the main point is that we're looking for recommendations of your favorite filmed adaptations. Naturally we'll be watching Romeo+Juliet for that one, but otherwise we're wide open to suggestions.

Like it might come through most clearly in toddlers who get sleepy and start insisting that no they're not, they don't wanna go to sleep etc, but I absolutely do also get very obstinate when I'm tired, even as a 29 year old woman. Very good observation of the human condition actually!

My #1 post of 2022

Y'know, putting aside the potential a-/acephobic reasons, and the "not relying on overused romance tropes/shortcuts" reasons, I think one of the big reasons (that I haven't really seen talked about?) that Good Omens gets accused of queerbaiting is that it's basically the story of an existing relationship. It's not the story of how Aziraphale and Crowley fall in love, or admit that they're in love, or whatever that people tend to expect out of romance stories these days, at least, not in the traditional sense. Yes, technically we get to see their relationship develop and we do get to see them realizing and admitting to themselves that they are in love and that the other loves them back, but that's not really the main focus the way it is in a lot of stories where romance is involved. There's no "will they/won't they" drama, there's no big confession or relationship-affirming kiss or anything, because they've been in a developing relationship for nearly all of 6000 years. That's like, literally what the Arrangement is. It's their relationship, their "basically married", their "involved", their "together but we can't say it outright bc people are watching and also we don't wanna screw it up". And people aren't used to seeing that in stories about relationships (seriously, find me one example of a story where the main, endgame couple is together at the beginning and the plot doesn't revolve entirely around them having issues that they need to work out. Hollywood/the publishing industry is allergic to writing about healthy relationships that stay healthy and in tact and exist after they get together). So when they see Neil Gaiman say "it's a love story" they expect the story of Azi and Crowley falling in love and finally admitting it to themselves and each other and having a big climactic kiss to seal the deal. And when they get a couple who is basically married in everything but name, who have been together for 6000 years but have had to be so so careful and dance around their feelings bc ~bureaucracy~, who don't need a big kiss at the end, just a loving, tender look because they can finally relax and be in love together... it doesn't feel like enough to them. They were so busy looking for the "getting together" plot that isn't really there that they missed the love story that was there. Which is a shame honestly, because it really is an excellent love story. There's enemies to lovers and mutual pining and almost a sort of courtly love situation going on and it's excellent. And people don't see it because it's not what they were looking for.
