Post-election 2024 started out somber, weepy, and kind of hopeless for many of us. Thank goodness for my old pal, singer/songwriter/producer, Steve Postell. A long-time news junkie, he determined this day he was through. He pulled me and the rest of us out of the muck––back into the music, art, and the land of the living. 

We processed together a bit first and then shifted gears with Steve singing his My Parade, which perfectly spoke to his altered focus with an invitation for us to join him in acceptance, awareness, and gratitude of sorts. 

He segued into great stories––his relationship with David Crosby and how Our House came to be, The Immediate Family, awaiting a possible Grammy nom this week for their amazing Denny Tedesco doc, how they came to be, and where they are now––when Steve first became aware of the section backing James Taylor, the moment that opened the door to the full circle back around with all of them––being compared to Jackson Browne to befriending and working with hiim––teen art class with Bob Dylan to coming thisclose to playing with him––producing and playing with so many of his heroes, and them playing with him––his current solo record deal, upcoming show, more Our House dates to come, Immediate Family dates as schedules permit… life is rich, life is good, even if we’re Walking Through These Blues––his spectacular song on his upcoming LP that he closed with. 

Steve and I go back to the heady days of the New York club scene in the 80s. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleeker Street, and Steve was fresh out of Pure Prairie League. I was RockStar struck. I booked him that day and have continued to for the past 35 + years wherever I went and whatever I did. When I had my book launch at The Federal in LA it was Steve’s Night Train Music Club I went to. As he always does, he put together a most kick-ass jam band. A rotation of the best players on the planet, some of whom comprise, with Steve, The Immediate Family. That’s another of Steve’s ongoing passion projects. 

I went into this evening a semi-paralyzed mess. I leave uplifted, reminded that friendships, music, work, fun, love, and service will see me through. Thanks, Steve! I trust you saved more than me this night.

Pure Prairie League "Bustin' Out" LP. So, these guys are from Southern Ohio and as such, got a lot of love in Northeast Ohio. These albums are littered about thrift stores, flea market, and record shop dollar bin. As most people do, I like their hit "Aime" and had long looked for a 45 of the song but never found one. Knowing I had a few copies of the album in my store stock I finally just pulled a copy for my personal collection and listened to the album for the first time tonight. I was surprised how "hard" side 1 rocked. To my ears it sounded later than 1972. The second side was far lighter. Today LIVE - Keep Kalmala and Karryonala - that's what she advised a few days ago. As my old pal, Steve reminded, the show must go on! So, we'll talk... 

Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Steve Postell and I go back to Bleecker Street in the heady daze of the New York club scene. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café and Steve was fresh out of Pure Prairie League. I was RockStar struck. I booked him that day and have continued to for the past 35 + years wherever I went and whatever I did. When I had my book launch at The Federal it was Steve I went to. He put together the most kick-ass jam band, as he always does. Did you ever see his Night Train Music Club? did, a gazillion times. A rotation of the best players on the planet, a bunch of whom comprise, with Steve, The Immediate Family.

Steve performed on and co-produced a CD for renowned producer/guitarist and songwriter Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar. The CD features a star-studded cast, including guest appearances by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Michael McDonald. This CD led to the formation of The Immediate Family, which, in addition to Steve, includes legendary session men Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel & Russ Kunkel.  Since forming, The Immediate Family has sold out two tours in Japan, where they recorded a live CD. They have released numerous videos and a third EP and LP on Quarto Valley Records. Their first single, Cruel Twist, reached the top 10 on the blues charts. The band is featured in an award-winning documentary by “Wrecking Crew” director Denny Tedesco. 

Most recently, Steve, who was in rehearsals to tour with David Crosby before his sudden passing, did tour  Our House, The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with Crosby’s friends and family.

Steve won two HOLLYWOOD MUSIC IN MEDIA awards for best song in the Americana/Roots and The Blues categories. His last CD features guests including David Crosby, John Oates, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, and Jennifer Warnes. Steve was the project coordinator for the Shout Factory anniversary release of the Jennifer Warnes/Leonard Cohen project, Famous Blue Raincoat, and is the composer for the documentary Dying to Know, about Timothy Leary and Ram Dass, narrated by Robert Redford. Steve recorded and mixed Ravi Shankar’s final two performances, both to be released on DVD. He recently produced CDs for Dan Navarro (whose hit songs include Pat Benatar’s “We Belong”) and Weather Report alumni Alphonso Johnson, both of which are charting in their respective categories. Steve contributed guitar to David Crosby’s last solo album, Sky Trails. Steve’s latest CD, Walking Through These Blues, features a host of guests, including David Crosby, Iain Matthews, Tony Furtado, Bekka Bramlett, Jeff Pevar, Greg Leisz, and many others.

Did I mention Steve has the voice of an angel? Hopefully, we’ll get a taste of the delicacy allowed on my diet.
