Now, let's stop for a sec and ask -- why would Chalmers take a view that commits him to this weird a view of consciousness? Basically, this kind of unfalsifiability is not accidental on Chalmers' part. Like it would feel extremely natural to say that qualia could interact with the physical world and let that be that. But Chalmers really does not want to commit to a view that says "there's either magic or new physics happening inside the brain. Once brain scans get better we can test it and find out, and I trust that the brain scans will prove me right". He very clearly does not think we'll find anything like that, and so he's constructed his argument against reductive materialism so that it can never be empirically falsified. The fact that you can't test it empirically is a carefully designed feature of this framing, not a bug or an incidental detail. That's what he's talking about when he calls his position a "benign form of dualism" -- it doesn't commit you to contradicting physics, because it can never produce testable predictions. It's the whole reason you would choose this framing over something like Des Cartes'.

this is not why Chalmers elects for non-interactionist views. rather, he believes that a causally efficacious theory of consciousness would just kick the can down the road, because he can always imagine a version of consciousness that only has the causal properties of consciousness, and not the phenomenal properties. i think The Conscious Mind is pretty clear about this, but may not be framing it in exactly the right way. i can find the quotes i am thinking of that make this clear later.

edit: actually Chalmers does say he doesn't want to bet against the physically closed universe, so you were right, but i was right as he says the main problem is that interactionism doesn't solve anything:

In any case, all versions of interactionist dualism have a conceptual problem that suggests that they are less successful in avoiding epiphenomenalism than they might seem; or at least that they are no better off than the view I have advocated. Even on these views, there is a sense in which the phenomenal is irrelevant. We can always subtract the phenomenal component from any explanatory account, yielding a purely causal component. Imagine (with Eccles) that "psychons" in the nonphysical mind push around physical processes in the brain, and that psychons are the seat of experience. We can tell a story about the causal relations between psychons and physical pro- cesses, and a story about the causal dynamics among psychons, without ever invoking the fact that psychons have phenomenal properties. Just as with physical processes, we can imagine subtracting the phenomenal properties of psychons, yielding a situation in which the causal dynamics are isomorphic. It follows that the fact that psychons are the seat of experience plays no essential role in a causal explanation, and that even in this picture experience is explanatorily irrelevant.

as i mentioned in the tags on the second post, pneumatons are composed of elementary particles called sophons, which are like bosons if they had feelings. sophons are the class of particle that obey Descartes-Chalmers statistics and have quantum numbers associated with various qualia.

i should elaborate: you remember how in the bohr model of the atom where electron shells can only exist where a whole number of electron wavelengths fit into an orbit (because otherwise destructive interference occurs)? it's a situation kind of analogous to that. pneumatons in their ground state have a wavelength of about 1 micron and so can't exist in smaller organisms. they can have a shorter wavelength if they have a higher energy, but then they can decay into other bound sophon states, like psions, animons, cognitons, or even pure inspirons (high-energy, low-mass particles a bit like neutrinos, that preferentially only interact with brains when they're bored and don't have a bit of paper handy to actually write stuff down on). otherwise their mass is too low to really decay into anything else, which is what allows pneumatons to be stable inside protein-based tissue.

long range structure of souls is built up by the exchange of psychons, the force-carrying particle of telepathy, prophecy, daydreams, and weird higher math that doesn't correspond to anything useful. in the late 19th and early 20th century it was hoped that the psychon could give us direct access to the realm of platonic forms, until Saussure's experiments in applied semiotics killed platonism dead in 1903. efforts to unify fundamental metaphysics moved on to antisymmetric Deleuze-Guattari theory in the 1960s.

nonetheless little progress has been made since. despite spending billions smashing phone psychics and mathematics grad students together in huge particle accelerators, no differenceons have been detected, and post-structuralists' predictions that sophons are fundamentally unstable have not been born out. experimental metaphysicians keep asking for more money and theoretical metaphysicians keep trying to come up with new ways of unifying the soul, consciousness, and religious experience, but frankly the field is in kind of a rut. even the most optimistic predictions suggest that we'd need a couple of religious kooks on the order of John Murray Spear to probe the lowest grand unification energies, and the world just doesn't seem capable of producing people with that kind of frenetic vision anymore. the best we can do is occasionally kidnapping Claude Vorilhon and bombarding him with x rays, and while that's good for like an undergrad demonstration of sophon tracks in a cloud chamber, we're not gonna get new metaphysics out of it.

Bacteria do have souls, but binary fission doesn’t produce new souls 99% of the time, so most single celled organisms share these sprawling souls that just get bigger every time they divide. Over time they compact down into these big mats of soul get compacted into geological layers that gradually accrete to the world soul. Sexual reproduction creates new souls but they’re much shorter lived as a result, and rarely make it into the bedrock, so most of the world spirit is from the Proterozoic.

This is the warning signs as I see it here of people who want to tell people I don't give a damn you're in my way you're going to die the value of life goes way down. The value of their zone is not that high either their own lives are going to make it because of aggression and offensive behavior not defensive. And it's because of loss because he's losing because he knows the big picture and he can't do anything about it and he's massively oppressed and pushed to do acts of homicide that don't actually ever amount to anything they keep coming back and ruining him and he's already ruined so he's trying to wear this mask of evil for people to stop taking from him even though he's a taker is not very sophisticated and down where it gets dirty he is an evil thug and just a consummate thief and kleptomaniac. And he feels if he robs you blind you can't do things. But this is a smaller arena that he's in until you're talking about nuclear weapons and that's what he's up to that's why he's very psychonic he's running around threatening to blow up large portions of Earth create massive shockwaves and be somebody I can't respect him but I certainly can understand him I can understand his criminal nature and I can understand what he's driving at I can also understand what drove him to this particular apparent madness which it is slightly more mad than he usually is. My brother my brother hated him but the point is that Joel Watts developed the hatred of himself by screwing his wife every day for years and Dave couldn't take it and why should he it's all he had was her and and she didn't want to and was kind of sick and frail and shrunken and angry and was not defending herself. The gutter killed it got her killed by this man who doesn't seem to care that she's a secret weapon. Couldn't do it couldn't get kids didn't care tossed it aside and does that with other things even though he can see what I can do is trying to do it to me because he is a loser because of his intelligence quotient but he's a victim of the max but it doesn't get him out of trouble with us and me. So he has them to add his yard in the United Kingdom health acquaint and disgusting he's trying to survive the walls are closing in and he considers Dave to be one of the larger criminals in his life and he can't make heads or tails of it because his empire is not as large his grasp of things is O K but it's not solid his grasp of things is OK but it's not solid when it comes to larger things so I told him about things in the future that I told him here but he's remembering the max would have these made there' the max would have these made there's a huge universe it has asteroids people made those on purpose to dominate and I think it's the max plan and it's Dave's but Dave did it backwards because he had what he thought was a solid unstoppable thing which is turning out to not be true and the max knew about it but Dave and GHWB and their wives didn't know by and even my dad. They didn't know that they would have an army capable of conquering them because they didn't seem it at the time they didn't seem to know about things they weren't going after and they weren't in situ they knew about them but everybody knows about some of it and who cares I mean you can't gage what's gonna happen by that. My feeling is that the clans went ahead with a lot of stuff including Dave banking on others losing and to the infight which is enormous and it's effective but it's not enough and they're vulnerable in Saturn soon the empire is getting powerful again they're at the Continental Caverns they're at the diamonds his makeshift army is deteriorating into insanity and to nothing and so we look at the sunset as it goes down on the race that was discriminated against like Dave and Dave is in jeopardy. So where is the solution what can I do i'm always asked you can listen to the whole story and try and memorize it. The Max are gaining ground while you guys are in fighting and it's very Ugly them and then you need to find out my story is true you need to find pieces and you need to find the code you need to find the calendar and the schedule. You don't need to find your friends over and over and shoot them. You need to have an army that is so vast that your pinley little 1 trillion or 1% isn't gonna be but it even a flashing opinion in a pan you've been delaying and you've been forcing people to make weaponry that's one thing and but way over the top OK. So I'm using it for. foreigners are getting up we're getting up in the max we're gonna have a real fight but you guys are flying to absolute pieces running and scurrying and running and scurrying. And you'll find that these people have a lot of warrants on them too in every city so what I know is something went arrive it went off kilter in his giants they're not humans they think like me but I'm small I haven't grown up and I'm not squished.
