Speaking of new universe stuff, the psi-hawk is such an cool concept

it is, I love the whole idea of combining different powers

Michael is on his own here, having left the rest of the team because he feels like there’s no place for him anymore.  He’s having a rough time, travelling on his own, stealing food because he has no money and no one to turn to.  Desperate, he decides to check out a research institute for “paranormals” (people with superhuman powers), even though he’s afraid it will be crooked somehow.  His paranoia gets a boost when two seemingly nice guys who give him a ride turn out to be criminals who try to trick him into using his powers to kill one of their enemies.  Eventually, DP-7, another team of paranormals, gets involved.  

This definitely has the storytelling elements of the time that some current readers might not like, like loads of inner monolog, but if you like comics from this era, those things are just another set of storytelling tools.  I enjoyed this.  It packed a lot of story and character development into a single issue.  The New Universe might not have worked out in the long run, but it can be fun to see the more deliberate worldbuilding that’s going on in these series, and how they were trying to portray more grounded and complex superpowered characters.

I love that the man who plays him has unusually sharp teeth. I tend to draw characters with fangs regardless of if they have them or not but in this case, I have some substantial reference to point to if someone asks me why I draw him like . . . this

Lucas having some of the most potent PSI around, but it being so unrefined that when used it's akin to someone using brute strength rather than finesse. Thoughts?

Yeah. Yeah. I like to think of his PSI sort of along these lines too. ( Also ah, not me noticing the words "brute strength" and considering parallels to Flint 😶‍🌫 )

iirc in a fic once I framed it like his PSI is akin to a force of nature. He's blessed by the Dragon / Mother Earth Herself, channelling this immense unwieldly power he barely understands, driven by his big awful tweenage emotions. And he scarcely had time to get used to it during his journey, let alone to do any formal "training". Kid's just a sheltered farm boy! He didn't even know psychic powers existed! I imagine he was downright terrified by his abilities when he first got 'em. PK Love in particular. And while he must've gotten the hang of them somewhat over the course of the game, I don't suppose that sense of uneasiness ever really went away. Judging by that one Tanetane line… ("The boy named Lucas learned some bad magic." 😟) His signature ability is such an explosive onslaught, capable of downing several foes in one fell swoop. He has to use it for the sake of the greater good, but bein' a kid who doesn't enjoy violence, he probably struggles to see it as anything other than a curse or burden. (And gets a bit scared whenever he catches himself feeling catharsis, or a sense of thrill, in its wake.)

let me share a few ships i think about in the delirious hours of the night

Paranoia and Stabbim (just a skutter acting out orders to kill when it descovers that maybe he's the only one who can get through to the hallucination without making him paranoid, will it reveal it's previous orders and expose it's decietfull job (stabber) and maybe break Paranoia's fragile trust in the process? or do the orders exceed the man (the skutter) and does the ultimate tragic of killing a loved one befall in the hands (claws) of Stabbim when he can't resist orders anymore)

Talkie the Toaster and support force (unrequited love, Talkie ne'er has time to ponder the importance of support force in his life, he knows it excists, but toast will always win out. and support force knows that. it's happy to just hold Talkie up and take any breadcrums it gets as long as it can)

Cat deepthroathing those polymorph eggs (it could've worked out if she hadn't died immediately and he wouldn've killed all her children, but life happens i get it)

the overly polite swordsmen and Rimmer's courage and self confidence (they're making out sloppy style, they spotter eachothers hats and swords from across the room and it has been escalating at an alarming speed)

Sir. Francis Walsingham and the "i am a fish" exam paper (he would gladly be the fish. proxcimity to dear people affecting how one behaves and all that)

Carter Burke and Rimmer (they die a horrible death together, the thought of the other there doesn't comfort them because they know both want to leave the other as a sacrifice and run, so they try to make themselves un-abandonable. doesn't work. they suffer horribly with all hope lost)

The Sister Brothers and the Rimmer Monster (it's lesbian/ gay solidarity as they bitch about the world. my favourite)
