Health: Misconceptions with Anemia and "Iron Deficiency"
Iron Absorption & Utilization
Simply taking iron supplements often doesn't cure anemia.
Proper absorption and utilization of iron involve many processes.
1/3 of the population has trouble absorbing and utilizing iron; it's considered the most common nutritional disorder in the world.
Anemia is usually about iron dysregulation, not deficiency.
Iron supplements or injections tend to circulate excessively, potentially causing toxicity.
Iron overload strains the iron recycling system and the liver.
Liver plays a key role in regulating iron uptake.
Iron doesn't regulate itself; it's copper-dependent.
Copper is essential for ceruloplasmin, a protein that mobilizes iron from tissues into the blood. Without copper, iron accumulates in tissue leading to inflammation and tissue damage which can develop into others issues like heart or liver disease and diabetes with increased risk of infection and cancer.
Retinol (Vitamin A) enhances iron absorption and influences genes regulating iron metabolism.
Iron Testing
CBC can detect anemia but it can't necessarily tell you the cause.
Serum ferritin doesn't give a true measure of iron stores.
Approximately 70% of iron is found in hemoglobin, around 20-25% is stored as ferritin and hemosiderin in tissues, about 5% is in myoglobin and enzymes, and roughly 0.1% as serum iron.
For accurate assessment, consider all containers of iron including hemoglobin, serum iron, and ferritin, as well as non-iron markers such as zinc, copper, and vitamins A & D.
The only direct way to measure iron stores is to keep removing blood until anemia sets in, then account for the iron deficit and dietary iron consumed during this time.
Sources (meat, liver, and seafood)
Copper: liver, nuts, molasses, oats, bee pollen, shellfish, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, acerola cherry powder, shilajit.
Retinol (Vitamin A): liver, other organ meats, egg yolk, seafood, fish liver oils, dairy products.
Other Insights
Phytates in plants can hinder non-heme iron absorption but vitamin C helps to counteract these inhibitory effects.
Over-supplementing with zinc can cause copper deficiency since copper and zinc need to be in balance.
There are many causes of anemia beyond "iron deficiency", such as vitamin B12 deficiency.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded in 1934 to George Whipple, George Minot, and William Murphy for their discoveries related to liver therapy in cases of anemia.
Other studies have supported incorporating beef liver (which contains copper, iron, zinc, vitamin A and D) into the diet.
The key is to have food that isn't concentrated on a certain vitamin or mineral but provides a mixture of what we need in a way that our body can properly absorb without inhibiting effects.
Men are naturally higher in iron than women and women are naturally higher in copper than men (estrogen levels contribute to the production of copper).
Female menstruation is why iron deficiency anemia is more common among women.
Signs of anemia include fatigue, pale complexion, blurred vision, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, cold hands and feet, scanty menstruation, numbness, insomnia, poor memory, dry skin, brittle nails, vertical ridges on nails, muscle twitches, shortness of breath, chest pain, headache, swollen or sore tongue, unusual cravings, restless legs.

Had a late snack yesterday. But it's a bit stupid. It's like I made myself do it, lol. I could have quite happily started my timer after dinner, as usual.
No matter how much I try change things to pull away from my long standing issues with eating, I now recognise that I'm just swapping one disordered eating behaviour for another.
That all started after my type one diabetes diagnosis at age 14.
Now that's a whole essay on its own, so I'm not going to get going on that one this morning 😂.
I do occasionally simply want an evening snack, and I can justify it easily because of my lifestyle, etc.
That's fine. But eating for the sake of it to prove just how "free and in control" I am? Well that's just ridiculous. And obviously proves exactly the opposite!
So anyway, back to today.
I got up late. Just didn't want to move! But I did. I made my protein decaff (pre-blended my milk and whey powder last night. Shaking it up in the sealed cup just doesn't cut it, lol).
Lovely and bright out there. I also went against all the sleep hygiene "experts" and left my curtains open last night. Wanted the sunrise to fill my environment before even getting out of bed. And it didn't affect my sleep at all. If anything, I actually slept longer before waking up for the first time. And that was around 4am, when the sun was starting to rise. That tells you something, I guess!
So I call my protein decaff my "pre-breakfast". Just made that up. Yes, I'm breaking my fast, but my real breakfast is back at home. My beloved nuts and collagen coffee.
My blood sugar is still way too high. Ridiculously so this morning, actually.
Just when I thought this insulin pump system was doing a better job. Nope.
I decided to get a high intensity workout in before lunch.
More work for my lower body, and definitely work for my cardiovascular health!
I am once again rethinking my nutrition.
Back to highest percentage of calories from fat, a lower (but still pretty high) percentage of protein and lowest of all for carbs.
My goal breakdown is 55% fat, 35% protein, 10% carbs.
But I'm not going to obsessively tweak, adjust or drive myself crazy by trying to hit those numbers too strictly.
Yes, I personally feel better tracking my food. That's one of my habits that helps that relationship with food. It's how I keep control.
Forever an ongoing work in progress!
So that meant cheese with my lunch again. It's been a while!
Plus sardines are already high in (healthy) fats.
Tiny scrap of greenery to throw in a few beneficial polyphenols.
And hard boiled egg. Eggs are fantastic!
It's interesting to see the difference exercise makes to my food diary.
That whole "calories in/calories out" principle is pretty much just theory. And a very feeble one at that. I only take notice of what I'm eating. Focusing on macro quantity AND quality. But yep, still interesting to look at the comparisons on the app on the rare occasion.
I knew I needed some yoga. My back isn't happy. The homeopath asked me lots of questions about that today. Everything seems pretty "high end" in terns of all my health concerns right now.
She is going to try yet another new remedy. This will ge the fourth attempt.
But hey, I guess that's partly what I'm paying her for. To find something that actually works!
So an average day in general. Not great, not terrible. That's good enough for me.
Gotta keep fighting, moving and smiling 👍

hi hi mara, i remember you writing in a post that you look forward to meal times. what are your favorite foods at these times?
good morning anonymous; i try to eat exactly four meals that are always the same "thing," because i:m particular about texture/temperature and routine;
Tumblr media
breakfast is always a cold almond yogurt (+ some protein powder) & some kind of low-carb sugar-free crunchy cereal (as a general guideline for most-of my food/diet, my mom drilled in-to me from a young age neurosis about carbs/sugar from her diabetes/liver-failure so i ended up inheriting much of this diet-neurosis); i try to portion out all of the ratios to be ~4; ie: 3 spoonfuls of yogurt, 1 part of cereal; if there is anything mixed in-to the yogurt, i try to use three things combined with the yogurts 1 so it comes out to four (today i made peppermint yogurt + a dark chocolate cereal that was bogo @ publix last week);
lunch is always a wrap, that i burn on the stove, and then burn the assembled wrap in an air-fryer so it is 1) scalding, 2) completely dry and crunchy; the filling is usually ~4 pieces of some protein (ex: 2 pieces of cauliflower chicken stuff that is then further divided so it comes out to some number-of-4; 4 cubes of tofu that are further divided down into 16 equal pieces; a fourth of an avocado that is quartered down into four slices), + some vegetable filler (usually spinach or broccoli or kale; sometimes onions i pickle or roma tomatoes i cube), + some jalapeno (with two cross-section cuts and then chopped into ~16 slices so it quarters), + some type of sauce i usually make (my favorite is this birria-consomme-esque sauce i make every few months out of tons of dried chilis, which basically prevents it from spoiling); when it:s been cold, i:ve been making this awful vegan gravy out of buckwheat flour + fake chicken bouillion stock (in place of drippings); sometimes i use egg because i had an incident last month that made me realize my diet was killing me <- though this might:ve just been more neurosis;
dinner is either half a protein bar or a stir-fry (bean sprouts, broccoli, red peppers, tofu);
then dessert i have half of a protein bar that i burn in airfryer;
i don:t really like eating anything that doesn:t match these texture/temperature profiles; ie: baked oats are always disappointing because they:re not cold/crunchy; cold wraps (which sometimes i think i want because i like cold-sauces (like mayo or w/e) and the way i cook things basically turns them into soup) are always massive disappointments; beautifully made and composed foods from restaurants are always disappointing because they:re not as scalding as i like, or spicy as i like; etcetera;
take care, anonymous
