Photo: a truly protected bike lane on Centennial Olympic Park Drive in Downtown Atlanta! It's a beautiful sight, but lanes like this are too scarce on major roads in the city. The results of a new study demonstrate how crucial is it for cities to build physically-separated bike lanes if they want to encourage more cycling and reduce car trips. When asked which factors deter cyclists from riding, three of the top four reasons were directly related to being squished by cars. The low number of genuinely-safe bike lanes, which contain physical protection from cars, is a major barrier to our goals for sustainability -- and also to our goals for equity, since lower quality bike lanes don't serve the needs of riders of all ages and abilities.

The city government is corrupt and inept, we must revolt and build dozens of miles worth of protected bikelanes to save the city

actually can i say. if u keep consistently watching city planing traffic engineering vids on yt and yes specially that one guy. you mind find that they quickly become repetitive on the same subjects like. u will already have the tools to understand these concepts and get what the problems or successes are yourself
but im honessssssstly not sure thats what their for. like in the way u could watch endless... cooking videos or smth and hear a larger percent of new stuff. i think their fucking agit-prop. likeeee. i watch em and im yeah yeah its a stroad the roads to wide the speeds to high its not built at ppl scale. but it also REALLY MAKES ME WANNA RIDE MY BIKE! seeing like. gopro mount footage of commute cycling being commentated. and makes me notice the cyclers when im out walking <- im not brave enough yet. and go. SHIT I WANNA BE DOING THAT! And i think helpfully builds ur skills to like. look at a place u COULD cycle and figure out how dangerous it could be.
i hope they make the speed limit everywhere 30km per hour and we all get protected bikelanes. amen.
#some shit#IF U HAVE ANY. what aboutism. trust that people are actually thinking about them. and u can actually ask me and i might answer!#im not saying there arent shit ass urbanist who want to fuck over. idk the poor disabled mother of four going to ikea or whatever. BUT LIKE#people do actually think about this stuff seriously. and have SERIOUS answers about it. other that 'well we would figure that out'#<- u know. like every tech bro in the world does#found a new channel where they seemed to refer to all car roads as 'suv lanes' and it made me chuckle#asterisk on this is there is actually SOME bike infrastructure where i live. if theres NO infrastucture like that where u are.#it might be more like how i watch rail transit vids <- with deep untouched longing

If you google Dutch bikelanes you’ll find a lot of protected lanes, separated from car traffic by kerbs, grass medians and other protections, but you’ll also be able to find pictures of lanes painted on car streets, similar to what you’ll find in many other places like North America.
Back in 2013 the Fietserbond estimated the Netherlands had 35000 kilometers of protected bikelanes and 4700 of on-street bikelanes, and that percentage of on-street lanes might have decreased further in the past ten years. Streets typically have ‘major maintenance’ scheduled every thirty years, where pretty much the entire street is ripped out and redone (in order to renew pipes, cables and the road surface) and this scheduled maintenance is a perfect time to update old designs and implement new standards, so you’ll often find changes like this made, with the street being restructured and on-street lane being turned into a separated one.
Check out plenty more examples in this old blog post by bicycledutch

Btw now that I’ve suddenly become a bike advocacy blog for a couple hours let me point out there’s more to bike infrastructure than a bikelane - even a separated one with protective barriers. So much more.
#something very basic a lot of infrastructure fails at is that failing at this basic premise:#the infrastructure must be continuous; preferably uninterrupted as much as possible; and to go to destinations people wanna go to#and also the design of the car infrastructure must be geared to slow down the driver when necessary#not just through the use of signs#but by physical and psychological nudges that cause the driver to subconsciously slow down#such as narrowing the road in order to make the driver feel like they’re going too fast to be comfortable#or by changing the road surface to one which causes the driver to automatically take notice#or even by planting trees close to the road

Making space for yourself on the road, sometimes requires creativity. If your city doesn’t have bike lanes, it’s up to every car that passes you on your bike to determine how much space to give you. Even if your state laws requires drivers to give 3-4ft of passing, often drivers suck at it and are what we call PASSHOLES. But you can reclaim some space—specifically, a safe passing distance—by strapping a pool noodle to your bike or any of these other cleaver ways of demanding space for yourself on the roads (swipe through). Trying silly tactics like these doesn’t negate being useful. . Like all tactical urbanism, these are great ways to get the message out for needed and protected bike lanes. . Eine protected Bikelane und ein Gehweg sind der ideale Ort zum Parken. Da wird der richtige Verkehr nicht gestört.

If cities know how to do it right, why is it so often done wrong? Never have people ride bicycles in between parked and moving cars. Have protected bikelanes in between sidewalks and parked cars. Simple. #DoIt. Everywhere. AAA: #AllAgesAbilities. https://t.co/uPsKUe1DGI

I noticed now on Ocean Park Boulevard, Santa Monica has painted the bright green bicycle Lanes to the right of traffic going up and down the street, which I think is totally brilliant. All cities everywhere should do this. Back in San Diego they've tried to make roads bicycle-compatible by painting a symbol of a bikerider right in the middle of the lane that is used by traffic. That. Is. Insane. Bicycles and motorvehicle use isn't so compatible as to have the two elements sharing a lane. Cities need to choose: are they going to be bicycle-friendly or not. I think the future mandates that they should be and steps need to be taken to protect bicyclists and give them their own space designated apart from motorvehicles. Santa Monica is so forward-thinking. They always have been, from the hippies of Venice Beach back in the 60s to the beat writers that were in this town like Bukowski to the film industry that draws influence and inspiration this beach community. Even Ocean Park Boulevard, remember KP short? Surf fashion and culture was basically born here by mass media. Surfing and skating has taken over the world now. This town is on the leading edge of doing good things always and people need to take notice. #santamonica #belikevenice #belikesantamonica #progressivedemocracy #liberalism #liberal #ilovela #bikelanes #sharetheroad #ride #peddletowork #cycling #rideyourbike #iwanttoride (at Santa Monica, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByOJs7Hgr8T/?igshid=1szojdyp8uhes

Wanted to address a comment so I grabbed NBJs most recent livestream biking in North America (in Toronto, a city with a fairly decent and growing bike network, congrats on electing Chow btw) and within the first five minutes of cycling on painted bike gutters he comes across a “bike lane ends up ahead” sign, has to ride on a lane in between two car lanes without protective barriers in order to cross the intersection, and then comes up to a point where the bikelane transitions to “sharrows” (where bikes and cars share the car lane) and he says “fuck that” and turns onto another street, which also turns into sharrows.
Anyway I think it says a lot that 11% of kids cycle (or walk) to school in the US and around 66-70% do in the Netherlands.
