📚 Here are some books we've shared before related to the intersectionalities between race and access to bikes, mobility, representation/inclusivity, environmental racism, and how racist policy practices like redlining or sacrifice zones inform the inequalities that disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and Brown communities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I know we can't educate all racial bias away but it’s important to keep chipping away at it and learn how to recognize it in systems and practices to deconstruct them, these books are a good start work from. There are piles of knowledge that cycling spaces and advocacy can learn from to make spaces more informed and equitable. Our zine is full of suggestions too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All these books are linked in our resource page and can be googled and bought digitally or in hardcopy. Bikes are essential to rearranging the way cities do mobility, business, and mutual aid during COVID-19. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bogotá has expanded bike lanes to curb coronavirus spread by reducing crowding on public transportation. This quick action is an example of cities re-organising public spaces to tackle the pandemic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ New York has seen a surge in biking due to the COVID-19 outbreak. NYC’s Department of Transportation said it had seen a 50 per cent increase in cycling on all East River Bridges, compared to 2019 figures. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ SF Mayor London Breed's office clarified that bike repair shops will be allowed to remain open, as many San Franciscans use their bicycle as their main mode of transportation. “Clarification for those who have asked: just as auto repair shops are considered essential so people can conduct essential travel, so are bicycle repair shops and mobile bicycle repair companies. Social distancing and consistent cleaning requirements continued to be required,” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a further example of street re-organisation to tackle the pandemic, Mayor Jenny A. Durkan announced the Seattle Department of Transportation is converting on-street parking spaces near restaurants to temporary loading zones to enable kerb-side meal/goods pickup. She said this would facilitate social distancing and support small businesses, particularly restaurants, which are “bearing the brunt” of efforts to combat the pandemic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In other efforts to provide aid, @covid19_messengers are calling for messengers and organizing volunteers to run errands for those in need. If ya'll join the effort, be sure to use safety measures, check out the zine "Safety Practices For Mutual Aid" by @mutualaiddisasterrelief. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #criticalmass #resistance #cycling #shredthepartriarchy #bike #streetsafety #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #tacticalurbanism #diybikelanes #mutualaid #radicalcare #covid19messengers #bikemessengers https://www.instagram.com/p/B99y4VCFUCF/?utm_medium=tumblr

As COVID-19 is shutting down buses and trains in cities, we remember that bicycles are always a contingency plan. During emergencies, lots of people take bicycles for granted. When things are running smoothly there’s also the common misconception that the bicycle is not a practical mode of transportation, dismissing the idea of riding a bike for anything other than recreation or fitness, and continue to characterize dedicated bicycle infrastructure as an indulgence and not a necessity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The dialogue is changing around the use of the bicycle and infrastructure along with environmental justice, shortcomings of our healthcare system, the fragility of the economy, and our need for proper response and affordable healthcare. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While we should give the bicycle its due, we also realize bikes and solo rides are accessible mainly to healthy able bodied folks. We see those at risk and non-abled and want to extend our acknowledgement to at risk communities who love their bikes but are also afraid to be out right now. Those of us who are healthy and abled, this is the time to show up for our community to assist and practice precautions for the safety of all folk around us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We want to share recommended tips of riding during COVID-19 via the CDC and public health officials. If there is anything we miss, please share below so we can help spread awareness and best practices to staying healthy. We are still working on a mutual aid guide for cyclists too, if you have one or have resources to help folks, please share too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #criticalmass #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #streetsafety #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #tacticalurbanism #diybikelanes #mutualaid #radicalcare https://www.instagram.com/p/B97KwZblMal/?utm_medium=tumblr

We know we aren't the only one's feeling overwhelmed with the amount of articles and resources circulating the media today. In my day job (data analyst), I find data to be the most informative tool to make decisions. And wanted to share the most informative article we think is helpful at this moment, "Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now." We encourage you to read his article in full as it provides insightful context. Practice social distancing, wash your hands, don't touch eyes, face, mouth, nose, and also practice mutual aid and radical care. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Solidarity with folks who cannot work from home or receive sick pay. Families who are shuffling childcare. Couriers and freelancers who will miss out on work and pay. Those who are in public work services and service industries. Students who will miss out on classes and work study pay. The physically challenged, immune compromised, the elderly, children, the undocumented, prisoners. All those on the frontlines of our healthcare. THANK YOU! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We encourage you to go to our resources page on our website to find ways to assist yourself and other in this time of need. Please let us know if we can amplify community needs, work, information, communities, or resources for folks to access. We are also putting together resources to help you navigate this time and will post up on Patreon that will be available to all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let's show up for each other in the ways that matter 💗 .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #criticalmass #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #streetsafety #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #tacticalurbanism #diybikelanes #mutualaid #radicalcare https://www.instagram.com/p/B9sAv5zlLN9/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bicycle activism is not one dimensional, it is deeply political and will affect populations in different ways which should always be accountable to the communities it touches. We hope the message of bicycle activism as DIY ethics for social justice is significant not only for the way it frames bicycle transportation as a way of “Doing Mobility Yourself” but also for the way it brings a pragmatic feature of everyday life within the purpose of our spaces. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While our spaces and groups in DIY bike culture can offer a “safe place” in which we can practice our values and test them to imagine a different way of doing things, we are limited to those domains in which social problems are “temporarily” resolved which resistance becomes reduced to style of representation and our anger and expressions of political action squandered. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The safe place, in other words, ends up functioning like the cultural equivalent of a nature preserve, whereby life flourishes inside the fences but the borders are, ironically, the only thing keeping the environment looking so vibrant. . We can only hope that the objectives we set in our spaces become part of the basis for a more humane and sustainable vision for the future. Our bicycle projects and groups should remind us that organizing responses to everyday societal problems should create the conditions in which we can collectively transcend the chains of capitalism altogether. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image: Markus Spiske ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #diybike #diybikelanes #shredthepartriarchy #bikingdiversity #inequality #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #citycycling #bikexplorers #tacticalurbanism #activism https://www.instagram.com/p/B74rkUll96H/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Let us be dissatisfied until the tragic walls that separate the outer city of wealth and comfort from the inner city of poverty and despair shall be crushed by the battering rams of the forces of justice." -from the 1967 speech “Where Do We Go From Here” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. . Equity and inclusion work didn’t spring up out of nowhere. While there are many leaders that came before and after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., there is no question that his central role in the Civil Rights Movement inspired and forever changed advocates all over the globe. . For some current day cycling and equity advocates, the MLK Day holiday inspires a period of reflection. In a moving 2013 essay (linked in profile), Dr. Adonia Lugo reminds us that for too many, cycling is not a choice but a necessity. She recounts the story of a man cycling home to his family after work who was hit by a car and killed. The tragic tale reminded her that the ways in which our cities and neighborhoods are divided by race and class have serious consequences. . So it is only fitting that bike and transit efforts aiming to bridge some of that divide holds a place in remembering Dr. King’s legacy along with the transit boycott images and landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement. . Dr. King and The Montgomery African-American community protested, resisted, organized and pressured local and national elected officials, but they also created an alternative community and reality. Despite daily dehumanization and disenfranchisement, they did not wait for a political party to save them. They created a new reality by means of protest and alternative transit. . #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #cities #streetsafety #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #tacticalurbanism #diybikelanes https://www.instagram.com/p/B7j_7K9FoFP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Cities struggle to “address racial and economic inequity issues in transportation, appease skeptical motorists, and turn the corner on better bicycling infrastructure mirrors similar debates taking place in other cities, from New York City to London.” The culture of bicycle advocacy itself is often seen as a “movement that can unwittingly accelerate the displacement of low-income communities—and confronting that perception has become a key challenge for bike advocates nationwide.” . But the single hardest thing to deal within cities is the pushback that comes from “decades of mistrust and mistreatment and disinvestment....The challenge of culture-changing power of bike lanes is how to—and how not to—convince these citizens and lawmakers to build them.” . Our movement “can’t lead with bikes. The point is safety. The point is health....These are universal quality-of-life things that every neighborhood desires. After I hear that, it's an opportunity for to say, actually, there are solutions to some of these things. And one of many solutions is building a bike lane. It calms traffic. It makes the crossing distance shorter. It provides connectivity to things inside and outside your neighborhood. That’s how you have the conversation." . CRITICAL MASSIFESTO, swipe thru. . "Critical Mass got started in September 1992 in San Francisco as a way to bring these various populations together in a festive re-claiming of public space. The idea was initially conceived by one person, who bounced the idea off other cyclists. San Francisco’s prominent bicycle messenger community was enlisted primarily through word of mouth, while commuters were reached by someone standing in the middle of the financial district passing out flyers. Beginning rather under a less catchy namethe Commute Clot—the ride drew an initial crowd of 60 cyclists, and these numbers doubled for several months following. Critical Mass has continued and grown in San Francisco, drawing about 700+ from month to month, with an October 1993 high of 1000+, but it has spread to other cities as well. With independent rides springing up all over the place, Critical Mass has begun to take on the character of a large scale, decentralized grassroots movement! . Ultimately, Critical Mass is just a bunch of cyclists riding around together, going from one point to another. (Someone coined the descriptive phrase "organized coincidence.") But the incredible thing is that, in attempting this simple task, so many important and interesting questions come up. Why is there so little open space in our cities where people can relax and interact, free from the incessant buying and selling of ordinary life? Why are people compelled to organize their lives around having a car? What would an alternative future look like?" . Read the rest of "How to make a CRITICAL MASS Lessons and Ideas from the San Francisco Experience" to learn how to start one in your own town or city, linked in profile. . While on holiday, we are going to be thinking about the New Year and how we can create movements. Our next zine issue will focus on grassroots resistance and organizing. We have lots to do! . #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #criticalmass #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #streetsafety #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #tacticalurbanism #diybikelanes https://www.instagram.com/p/B6RhBdTlMZv/?utm_medium=tumblr

Making space for yourself on the road, sometimes requires creativity. If your city doesn’t have bike lanes, it’s up to every car that passes you on your bike to determine how much space to give you. Even if your state laws requires drivers to give 3-4ft of passing, often drivers suck at it and are what we call PASSHOLES. But you can reclaim some space—specifically, a safe passing distance—by strapping a pool noodle to your bike or any of these other cleaver ways of demanding space for yourself on the roads (swipe through). Trying silly tactics like these doesn’t negate being useful. . Like all tactical urbanism, these are great ways to get the message out for needed and protected bike lanes. . “Why Transit Matters” !!! Sources below, plz read and share! ✨🚌 repost: @johnny_redd.pdf - check out more of their urban and transit collages and stickers! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ALSO >>> It’s #transitequity day in celebration of Rosa Parks. To also push this movement and message, a reader of ours reached out to us to share a grant program, Safe Routes To School, that needs momentum and awareness and hopefully some action! A grant focused on equity for infrastructure for public schools to upgrade sidewalks, crosswalks, and anything that promotes biking and walking. Programs like this can help the future for communities to get the type of infrastructure developed to make walking and biking safe and possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We've attached a video and link in profile if you're looking for tangible local action to make safe streets a reality in your neighborhood and children's school. This is all paid for by a grant so apply! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Collage data: “Who Relies on Public Transit in the U.S.,” Pew Research Center, https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/04/07/who-relies-on-public-transit-in-the-u-s/ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #cities #streetsafety #bikelanes #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #tacticalurbanism #diybikelanes #transit #transportation #transitequityday https://www.instagram.com/p/B8J1Kf2lnjd/?utm_medium=tumblr
