BOTD: Purple Martin
Tumblr media
Photo: Doug Greenberg
"Graceful in flight, musical in its pre-dawn singing, this big swallow is one of our most popular birds. Almost all Purple Martins in the east now nest in birdhouses put up especially for them. Martin housing has a long history: some Native American tribes reportedly hung up hollow gourds around their villages to attract these birds. Purple Martins migrate to South America for the winter, but before leaving, they may gather to roost in groups of thousands in late summer."

JTTW Chapter 53 Thoughts
Chapter 53 for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group!
We have arrived at the Kingdom of Women Arc, this is going to be a doozy!
Will he though? Will he listen to Sun Wukong from here on out? That is questionable at best.
Birdies! Purple swallows, yes indeed. They seem to specifically be the Progne Subis or Purple Martin, which are part of the swallow family!
Tumblr media
A very pretty bird! I do not think I have to mention which one is the male and which one the female here. Also the purple seems to come out particularly well when the sun hits their feathers just right.
Tumblr media
Although they are much more prevalent in Northern America there are multiple records of them travelling long distances to other continents, so there is a decent possibility of them having shown up in Asia at some point as well.
Orioles are correct too. Specifically the Oriolus Chinensis or Black-naped Oriole, this time definitely native to Asia!
Tumblr media
Another very pretty bird, where both the male and female have fancy plumage!
Personally I’m also very fond of the juvenile’s colouration.

The boat lady probably heard that question way too often to still have any interest in explaining, which is fair. It is not like the answer cannot be inferred while travelling through the land.
Those names are hilarious though, this is truly comedy gold!
It is very fitting that the Immortal Master is described more like a monster than most of the other demons ever were. I did not mind the fiends up until now or considered them necessarily evil for treating humans like any other animal since humans literally are animals too, but this guy here I truly hate.
In turn I love that Sun Wukong is hitting him right between the legs, he more than deserves it!
Again I am looking directly at Ao Lie who the group and the writer seem to just love forgetting about.
Yeah, it is pretty clear that a man wrote this, one who just could not fathom a woman being fine by herself or with another woman.
Nooo, do not spare him! At least get him arrested! Just make sure he can never bully the women again, only breaking his hook will not do for that. Even if it scares him momentarily he might become brazen again once Sun Wukong is gone. In a story context that was a good villain, but an inherently unsatisfying ending to him.
It would actually be interesting to know how the whole pregnancy thing works for men. It seems that it can indeed work as such, but how exactly given that they lack certain parts usually needed for pregnancy. An interesting concept along the lines of speculative biology.

Fourthly, a swallow, which though differing from the Progne purpurea of both Americas, only in being rather duller coloured, smaller, and slenderer, is considered by Mr. Gould as specifically distinct.

Euplectes progne
Also known as the long-tailed widowbird is a species of bird in the family Ploceidae. Male long-tailed widowbirds are readily visible due to their extremely long tails.

Between six and eight of their twelve tail feathers are approximately half a meter (20 inches) long.
