If I were in charge of a Hellboy adaptation I would cast Brian David Gilbert as a young Professor Bruttenholm and Brian David Gilbert in old age makeup and a wig as old Professor Bruttenholm.
It would not be a good movie. It would be the best movie ever made.

things about abe that i have found in official material that i think are mildly funny
his response to being offered sriracha is "oh god no." (direct comic quote).
in the same comic, it is established that he's some degree of lactose intolerant.
he has fenced with a sword with professor bruttenholm on one occasion (bones of giants novel).
he likes dire straits, specifically walk of life (from the lost army, book). hellboy also states that he's into 80s pop in general, which makes me cackle.
he also likes sting. this was in the bones of giants novel, and it was not mentioned in the comic as far as i know. this is heartbreaking to me because of fucking course he's a sting fan. (did he watch the original dune movie?)
i'll add more later, but he's such a funny little guy. to me. i want to chew on him. why is the amphibian guy both incapable of handling spice and lactose intolerant? how did he fail at both?

VERSE: BPRD (bureau for paranormal research and development)
childhood and adolescence history is the same, but when reese was put into the psychiatric facility in russia at ~14 after her suicide attempt, her files ended up on the desk of professor bruttenholm and the burgeoning bprd in his ongoing search for people with 'gifts' or 'talents' that might fall under the purview of the paranormal. he (or someone he worked with depending on what works best for plots) traveled to speak with her and after a few 'therapy' sessions, he arranged to have her sent to a facility where she could be supervised and trained how to recognize and use her abilities. her abilities include psychometry (pre & post cognition), true sight, the ability to see and interact with (even, occasionally, physically) spirits / deceased, dreamwalking, divine touch (theoretical immortality) and cryomancy. this is one of the few verses that she is aware of her powers and is usually capable of controlling them. she also has somewhat less of a self destructive personality, but this is countered by the fact that she is (while not indestructible per se) can bounce back from any physical trauma that she has thus far endured (though it's never fun and always painful), and still has a lot of emotional and psychological trauma that she's forcibly repressed from the abuse she suffered growing up and guilt for the death of her sister which can result in some interesting fits of temper. eventually she is given junior agent status and is sent to work with hellboy & the team et al.
(yes, i realize some of the timelines are a little off if we go strictly by comic dates bc she's generally in her mid twenties for threads and plots and i mean she could be older just with slowed aging but either way we're just gonna roll with it - it could also be someone other than the professor that found her, another agent with the bprd etc. i'm not particularly fussed over the details they can be worked out as needed!)
as a side note: when this character was first created, she was a mutant, with her powers being enhanced ridiculous amounts when she was implanted with a fragment of darkseid's power to be used as his oracle / prophet / to eventually create the doorway he needed to take control of her earth so -- whatever the equivalent would be in verses with such entities, that's where her power amplification comes from.
#VERSES.#VERSE. ( bprd. )#did i make this verse solely inspired by one blog and my eternal love for hellboy yes#oh well#sue me#also though this could crossover with other verses and be fun to play around with

Miskatonic University
Miskatonic University is a private university based in Arkham, Massachusetts. Miskatonic University was established in 1690 by Ward Phillips. The University originally was heavily modeled on neighboring schools like Harvard, but would begin to move in a different direction early on when, in 1693, Philips gained custody of a number of rare occult books from the collection of the Sanderson sisters in the aftermath of the Salem witch trials. Thus, from an early era, Miskatonic University was heavily colored by an interest in paranormal and occult phenomena. This would in early history largely remain underground–especially in the late 1600’s still dominated by a Puritan ethos. However, the university would gain a reputation for addressing unusual incidents. It was Miskatonic University scholars who were tasked with figuring out what caused the events around Rip Van Winkle’s anomalously long sleep, investigating rumors of a so-called ‘headless horseman’ in the backwoods of New York and carrying out research into reversing the effects of ‘the Alteration’ rendering the ocean treacherous to navigate. Much of this research was carried out in secret by professors ostensibly dedicated to other subjects. In the mid-19th century, the growth of Spiritualism and interest in the occult led to the founding of the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose at the school, which quickly became a much larger esoteric order. A large archive of occult tomes and supernatural artifacts were accumulated at the school and in 1871, the American Secure Containment Initiative was founded by Artemus Gordon, Brisco County, Sr., and Jonah Hex, who set up the ASCI’s headquarters underneath the campus library.
These elements largely remained underground into the early 20th century, though plenty of cracks were present. Miskatonic University professors helped analyze the origins of the so-called ‘boomfood’ that triggered a wave of gigantism in the 1900’s, recognizing that radioactive particles played a key role. Research into weapons development sponsored by the U.S. government made it a major target during the War in the Air, with German air raids heavily damaging the campus. It has been suggested that Dr. Herbert West’s later experiments occurred because of trauma experienced when West survived a bombing raid that killed an entire class of students in the room with him. A number of Miskatonic University faculty became involved in incidents involving the supernatural or paranormal-Henry Armitage, Randolph Carter, and Seneca Lapham among others-but overall most students were more focused on traditional prestige in this era. While the occasional figure in the vein of William Fitzgerald or Trevor Bruttenholm was attracted to attend by the university’s occult underground, this was the exception rather than the rule well into the 20th century.
However, the mid-20th century saw the paranormal and occult elements of Miskatonic University creep into the open. As part of the Cold War, the US government had developed a keen interest in supernatural phenomenon and developed many agencies–Delta Green, the Unusual Incidents Unit, the Federal Bureau of Control and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense–aimed at researching the supernatural, combating threats it posed and even perhaps weaponizing it. Miskatonic University’s familiarity with these anomalies was seen as a positive by the government. Furthermore, the prestige associated with paranormal and anomalous research was expanding. Columbia University Professor John Montague had helped make parapsychology a much more respectable field. These factors combined to allow for Miskatonic University to become the first university in the world to open up a Department of Paranormal Studies, containing such majors as Parapsychology, Occult Studies and Esoteric Archaeology. The existence of these departments would require unconventional hiring choices and so the likes of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, MACUSA member Gomez Addams, self-proclaimed ‘psychic doctor’ Miles Pennoyer and former news anchor Carl Kolchak would end up among the faculty of the school by 1980. Members of the Department would play a key role in providing information to the White Committee, which sought to determine the implications of the Black Prom incident in Chamberlain, Maine (though much of the opinions of Miskatonic faculty were discarded by the committee).
The establishment of the Department helped the school draw an unorthodox array of students in the years that followed. Alongside the old-money crowd of future lawyers and businessmen came the likes of Lydia Deetz, Jack and Maddie Fenton, Tommy Jarvis, Nathan Dawkins and Nancy Thompson-all figures drawn to the school by its expertise regarding supernatural and paranormal phenomenon. However, this also drew less savory individuals to the school. The likes of Nikolai Wolf (who would resort to human sacrifice to gain fame for his band Low Shoulder), Cole Turner (a half-demon lawyer who briefly became the Source of All Evil) Edgar Zambus (the creator of a strain of zombism that combines supernatural and viral methods of reanimation that he deliberately infected himself with), Roman Armitage (inventor of the infamous Coagula procedure which hijacked the bodies of numerous African-Americans) and Amy Hughe (a serial killer and worshiper of the demon Malphas) all attended or were planning to attend the school only to make use of its occult secrets for not-so-noble ends. The near-miss awakening of Cthulhu in 1983 during World War III only further caused the school to develop a sinister reputation. Senator Bob Roberts launched a quixotic bid to bar students attending the school from receiving federal financial aid in the 1990’s over these ties to black magic, though his proposal never made it in front of the President before Roberts resigned due to being implicated in the Mattiece scandal of 1993.
The more sinister reputation enjoyed by the school was particularly ironic knowing the role of faculty, alumni and current students in preventing a number of prophesied calamities surrounding Y2K. Miskatonic University Professor Iain Gladstone was the first to take notice of multiple prophecies related to the Apocalypse being fulfilled in the lead-up to the turn of the millennium. Working with his colleagues Rayna Kazuki, Leroy Brown and Dirk Pitt, Gladstone worked to recruit a team that could identify potential Antichrists and, if possible, eliminate them. Most of the team were current students at the school-Sarah Bailey, Steve Urkel, Charlie McGee, Casey Connor and Kate Libby were selected based on a combination of desired research capabilities and known or implied paranormal prowess. Beyond the current students, the quartet of professors brought in a few university alumni-the previously mentioned Lydia Deetz, ex-football star Scott Howard and on-and-off X-Men team member Katherine ‘Kitty’ Pryde. Aside from Deetz, the alumni were brought in as additional muscle. Through diligent investigation, this team was able to identify Angel Caine-the son of businessman Robert Caine-as a potential Antichrist working through his father’s business empire to bring about the End Times. Caine had additionally formed an alliance with Adrian Woodhouse, another potential Antichrist who sought to co-opt remnants of older Great Old One cults for his ends. The team brought these two to the attention of the BPRD and, alongside a military forced headed by one Colonel John McNamara, were able to prevent Armageddon.
The modern Miskatonic University has enjoyed an enormous boost to prestige following the Awakening of Magic and the widespread embrace of occult and supernatural research. The school was able to greatly expand operations as a result, pursuing ideas that were fringe even amidst the ‘new normal’ of anomalies. After the Amphibian invasion of 2020, the school became a locus of research into extradimensional phenomenon, discovering the realms of Mewni, World A, Oz, and Throne among many others. Researchers from the school helped create the EVA units used to fight the so-called ‘angel’ incursions of the 2010’s and chronicling the spread of ‘quirks’ across 90% of the human population post-Awakening of Magic. Miskatonic University has also begun tracking temporal anomalies after the Warren & Warren incident of 2021, partnering with Britain’s Anomaly Research Center in the process (the ARC has indicated interest in a ‘temporal storm’ appearing to connect 2023, 1890, 1941 and 2053 in some way). Beyond this renown, however, the highs and lows of a normal prestigious school remain. Students briefly seized control of Armitage Hall in protest of the school accepting a $30 million grant from Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, right-wing pundit Lindsey Bluth-Funke has condemned the school for pushing ‘wokeness’ and allegations that rich alumni bribe there way into the school continue to dog its reputation alongside its more fantastical dimension.

Heads up: mentions and discussion of depression and suicide ahead. Read at your own discretion.
Since my personal timeline is a mix of GDT movie and comic canon (in the comics Bruttenholm died in 1994 before the Cavendish Hall Incident, in the GDT film he died in 2004 killed by Kroenen-- which is death I use), The events of the Blood & Iron animated series is inspired by the GDT film, it has to be before October-November 2004. As stated in my last post, I set it in 2003 meaning it was right before the events of the GDT film.
I'm breaking this down chronologically; as both the influences of Rasputin and Hecate run deep.
1993-1994: The Cavendish Hall Incident and the Start of Things to Come
In 1993, Professor Bruttenholm, the three Cavendish brothers, and Sven Olafson would travel to artic circle after the promising 1989 expedition to Greenland that recovered relics that were dated to be older than most known civilizations (and brought Kar into the Bureau fold). This expedition would lead them to waking up Rasputin (and Sadu-Hem). Rasputin would control hi and wipe the memory from the Professor's mind-- leaving him with amnesia for that period of a time.
It is with the return of the Professor in 1993 that the reoccurring nightmares of "The Man in Black" begin to a now 7-8 year old Kar. While she was prone to seizures (later learned to be literally her mind and body literally trying to tear apart). A seizure attack would usually follow these dreams, leading to an increase of medical research leading to no answers.
In 1994, after the Cavendish Hall Incident would be the last big nightmare/attack. At the insistence of Hellboy, she would later give a drawing of "Man"; a child's scribbled portrait of Rasputin. The drawing was left in the files; only really becoming significant a decade later.
A year later, Kar would be move to New York and be under the care of Frankie Aster and Ava Cohen, in an attempt to normalize and acclimatize her. The nightmares would be infrequent but the attacks would remain, requiring occasional medical check ins and medication.
2003: Trumbolt Mansion Incident: A Family Reunited
After her graduation in May, Kar was officially made a BPRD Agent at 18, and accepted into a graduate program at Oxford-- deferring the attendance for a gap year (that winds up being almost 2). It was assumed to be more of publicity/goodwill thing, there was no expectation of any danger, and was allowed to join her family in the investigation of the mansion in her first "official" mission. Needless to say it was more than that; and in the conflict she would be revealed to her mother's attention. While she would not actively meet her mother-- but her mother would recognize her. In her conflict will Hellboy, Hecate would leave a cryptic message: the lesser serpent, the tool of her vengeance is within their midst.
The cryptic message wasn't exactly taken very seriously, though a vetting of agents and background checks leads nowhere, but the term lesser serpent only leads to relics from the 1989 expedition. With updated technology, scans reveal more to the sarcophagus, revealing things beyond the chiseling.
The Lesser Serpent was in their midst-- newly minted agent Kar. When the new was shared it was the first domino in the chain leading to the events of 2005. Hellboy had more faith in her than she did-- he trusted she'd never willingly put the Bureau in danger. She feared she'd become a loose canon, an unwitting puppet. However, those fear were kept to herself. Needless to say this turned into a sort of functional depression; staying out late, partying a bit more than she did in college now no longer worried about needing to wake up for class-- quietly concerning her parents.
2004: The Death of Bruttenholm and Russian Expedition
The nightmares started getting frequent and stronger right before the time Sammael was unleashed. After the first real serious episode in years, it was recommended she return to the Bureau for observation. She recovered shortly in November, enough to briefly meet Myers and to return to normal life-- a night out with friends turning tragic as agents escort her back. The man she called aba was dead.
She was present at his funeral. Speaking to no one, not even her moms, not even Hellboy. Grief does weird things, paired with the paranoia seeded in the last year. Now the Man in Black was trying command her rise, to wake. Tired of the nightmares, tired of the looming destiny she didn't want, tired of the pain, tired of the episodes. It was with that, she made a final decision.
Here's where it gets sad. Frankie and Ava did care, did report her missing but at 19 (a few months shy of 20), with a history of disappearing in the night, she wasn't considered high priority and as an adult they couldn't do much. Her moms begged the Bureau, but Manning put the many of the few. Stopping Rasputin in Russia (and saving the world) was a priority over finding Kar. Manning offered a token couple of agents, and took a calculated risk in not informing the big 3 about it until after returning from Russia.
While her moms dealt with an unhelpful NYPD and BPRD, the rest of her family was flying off to Russia, Kar stood in the Brooklyn Bridge, staring at the dark ocean below. If she was lucky her body wouldn't be found for a few days, if at all, depending on a few factors-- assessing her own death with the coolness of a forensic investigator. If she was to end it all, at least for once, after a life filled with decisions made for her, her end would at least be made on her own terms.
That was until a man in a black suit appeared from nowhere, like death himself. Unbeknownst to her then, an agent of her mother's. If she had the gift of foresight; Kar would have taken the cold depths of the East River over his talking her down a ledge, his offer of false comfort and succor --at least her suffering would have ended quicker...
Early 2005: The Order of the Ebon Serpent
It wasn't a few days after returning that new was broken to Hellboy. She'd already missing for almost two weeks at his point. Needless to he was furious-- even if deep down he agreed it would have been a distraction. He could have least tried before departing for Russia. Even though he should be recovering, he was at Frankie and Ava's first thing, back on the beat scouring five boroughs for clues.
One lead took him to another and another until an obscure occult society found itself in his crossroads: The Order of the Ebon Serpent.
Kate, Hellboy, Liz, and Abe had all pieced it together. The Order of the Ebon Serpent, a cult dedicated to finding and recovering the lesser dragon, stolen away from Mother Hecate's embrace and sealed away by the priests of Anum. Rumors had it they've been holed up in the Upper East Side since the height of spiritualism swept the nation. It was the lesser dragon that caught their attention.
Mother and daughter was reunited again; Hecate was recovered from the Trumbolt mansion by Erasmus Black, the immortal head of the Order and devotee. It was not a gentle or pleasant reunion. A defiant, suicidal daughter, an imperious mother expecting the loyalty commanded-- and quite literally demanding her body. Kar did want to die, but the prospect of her mother parading around in her body was worse than death.
The Bureau raid on the townhouse had disrupted the ritual, freeing Kar right in the nick of time. Hecate was destroyed a final, and with the bulk of her power gone, would spend her time now as limited, weaker form. (Leading to the events of Darkness Calls/Wild Hunt and the vacuum Nimue takes advantage of) Through this, the dragon and chthonic side were reconciled; Kar would no longer have seizure episodes at this point. The Bureau keeps her for a few month to recover, the events of the last year or so putting a toll on her mental health. It is soon after being deemed "stabilized", she was sent sent to the UK to start her studies without any notice given save her mothers. After a harrowing few weeks she acclimated.
2006: The Deal
When Bromhead sealed Hecate away, she had enough power left to meet her daughter in dreams. At first Kar was severely defensive, but the boogeymonster that haunted her life was a weakened and pitiful spirit by now. Kar had been deep in her studies at Oxford while the war between the witches waged under nose, unaware of the throne she was expected to inherit. A deal was brokered; another would take the role of Witch-Queen, but Kar would assume her mother's duties and obligation to the underworld-- only and only when Kar died.
Satisfied, Hecate would retreat to the shadows once again.
2017: The Lesser Dragon and the Dawn of the New World:
Kar had finally revealed her true Hem form only once-- her rage at the Black Flame triggering the final hold on herself in 2015. And yet against Rasputin in the final conflict she remained as herself. Taking the Monk's life as well as her own, using a ritual that bound him to her, the bargain with her mother would fall into action. The Man in Black would haunt her dreams no longer.
She would appear, once last time, in her iron maiden form to confirm the bargain, while not fully reconciled, their meeting is not hostile. One might consider it cold and business like. It is with Hellboy's blood and the sacrifice of the stone hand that would finally end the chain of events and bring about a new word, the rest of the Ogdru Hem sealed with their Jahad parent. Hecate, in her iron maiden form, would be the catalyst.
With the "birth" of the new world, an her successor chosen, what's left of Hecate's sprits retires to the depths of Tartarus, by her own volition-- her time is gone. It is her daughter's time now.

Merope Constantine Addams
The Scottish inter-dimensional traveling demigod Daughter of John Constantine. When she was nine she was blood adopted by Morticia and Gomez Addams.
Raise between her in the in between of the normie and mystical world Merope works at BPRD as a research/ field agent as well as the assistant to Professor Trevor Bruttenholm. Through her cousin Cardan and ‘grandparents’/ ancestors Titania and Oberon she has a strong connection to the fae. One of her special interests is learning magic so after finishing school Merope became the last student and successor of Baba Yaga.
Trivia:
- Merope is an Ex-member of the Young Justice team. During her hero days she went under the Code Name: Siren. She left the team due to her relationship with Klarion.
- Merope is the daughter of John Constantine and an ex girlfriend. During a rough patch in their relationship the ex called upon sone of the gods to made her pregnant in order to baby trap him. This is how Merope is demigod.
- After finishing her apprenticeship Merope became the new Baba Yaga, going by the name Baba Iaga
I have so much more for her but I don’t think anyone wants a whole essay for her (though if you do I wouldn’t mind doing one). Basically she is an Inter-Dimensional Demigod Witch who lives in a Baba Yaga house - a house that has chicken legs.
