The Director's Office wasn't as grand as the Study, but it wouldn't be disruptive to meet. Abe had come in late and she didn't want to disrupt him sleeping-- he looked pretty rough and probably would need a few days. Once upon a time, Kar was on the other side of that dark, wooden desk. Either being chided as a child for making a ruckus at some diplomatic event, or later being given orders as an field agent. Now she was Director Aster-- a Dark horse candidate, but someone with a vision that could keep the Bureau alive.
Manning's taste was sparse, he always seemed like a rather Spartan man to the end. Kar's wasn't entirely maximalist, but the shelves were stacked with books of all kinds of topics, literal grimoires, and other reference materials. A couple of photos of her family, some replica artifacts and fossils (and some real ones), degrees framed and on displayed. Behind her was windows displaying the grounds and woods that had filled much of her childhood.
She'd been reading when a knock at the door broke her from her thoughts. Ah, yes, the new agent was starting today. She hoped her siblings haven't started hazing them yet.
"Agent Scott? " She asked, opening the door to reveal the stranger.
The director looked not the usual...director look. Manning liked his suits, father liked his tweed, but Kar was...Kar. Unless she had to talk to a senator, or do a press conference, and sometimes when she was called to do lecture, Kar was an informal person. Tee and jeans sort of person, as clean as possible at least. She was clearly an boots-on-the-ground leader, not a desk jockey. Even when she was working as an archaeologist, she preferred the trenches than the desk.
Casual dress aside, one might consider what made her stood out was her eyes. Green, gecko-like irises set in black sclera. Her usual sunglasses sitting on her desk with the files.

"I appreciate it--I'm used to other academics-- we just word vomit to each other as a sign of kinship" She joked. Mostly. It was kind of true. Conferences were basically infodump central for all who attended.
"But yeah, humans have been trading for a long time-- we kind of have guesses but this of course before they started recording things down..."
A laugh, returning to her drink for a moment.
"But I digress. I could ramble about early history for eternity." Literally, in her case.
But before she could continue, her device buzzed in her pocket. Kar pulled it out and looked at the notification with slightly furrowed brows...
Their eyebrows raised up a little bit hearing that it wasn't native to the archipelago.
"Oh.. oh that does make a difference there. So that kind of trade must have been going on for quite a long time, even at that point." Saima admittedly was genuinely fascinated by the concept and would have to do a little more reading,
"I mean.. hey it's your areas of focus, how can I be upset when you're excited about discoveries that are especially promising, or at the very least genuinely intriguing."

Press release video of Michael talking about Welsh National Theatre, an endeavor that he is funding and will be part of as artistic director!
This is absolutely incredible news, and it is impossible to not be moved by Michael's passion, his love for the theatre and especially for telling and sharing Welsh stories. Everything about this feels so perfect for him, and is so needed for communities all across Wales.
(Also can't wait to see what the inaugural production will be in which Michael himself is starring in 2026!)
#michael sheen#welsh seduction machine#welsh national theatre#love this so much#michael in his artistic director era#you love to see it#really hoping the production will be that gay love story between Owain Glyndŵr and Henry V#with him and David in the lead roles#please universe make this happen#so many possibilities#amazing#<3

I start my new-old job on Wednesday selling beds. I’m antsy. It’s gonna be a new routine to get into and it’s gonna be an official pause on game jobs for a year unless I wanna burn this bridge to the ground.
I need to get some button ups today, pick plums because I promised my nana, ideally groceries would happen but like. Who knows. And I need to bust out story illustrations.
I’m already so tired.
#ramblies#I’ve had two beta reads of it and the back half is so much stronger than the front but I don’t have time to fix or deal with it#when I told my beloved how sad I was about the idea that some people might buy my story before it’s The Best and how I’d feel horrible#selling a better version later that had more editing they were like ‘do you have any idea how many times I bought lord of the rings?’#like directors cuts come out and people get it and it was honestly v comforting

"For sure! I'll rummage through next time I'm at HQ." Kar said. Not a big problem for the head honcho. Provided she fill out a few things and make a final vetting for it. A pity they lost the Rockies base, so much was there-- and not just the archives.
"You name the day, and I'll try to clear the calendar, let my ministers know, all that-- just in case some bad faith actors wanna ruin things."
Kar winked, sipping her drink. It was a possibility, albeit, low. But with Kar around maybe, just maybe they'd know better. Then again it wouldn't be the first time she gave someone a good thwack with her torch...
"Well you can't make an offer like that.. some safe but unconventional materials sounds wonderful. I could definitely use some of those kinds of materials." It was definitely hard for Z to resist the appeal of some potentially useful materials for their next project.
Their excitement only grew at the mention of potentially going to Erebus. "Ooooh. To visit Erebus, you really are making things so much better with such an offer." It was clear enough what Kar was getting at and Zora couldn't help but genuinely be thrilled by the prospect.
They might not be a demon but they had been to enough realms and dealt with enough of their own peculiarities that they being no ordinary mortal might worth skirting such guidelines.

Sitting in my Procreate drafts, my mid attempt of HB!Kar, in her daily wear and in her “laurels” (which is a watered down version of ANOTHER drafted sketch of her Hades-inspired design…)
This was a fun exercise, but I don’t think I’ll be doing commissions or doing it again.

Kar proffered the root beer, while she decided to not have the cel-ray, closing the fridge and opting to rifling through the cabinet for her tea. It probably was for the best given her very long day.
"No trouble at all." Kar assured as she got a kettle on the boil. One guest or a one hundred, this place could be very accommodating. No doubt if the house hadn't, Mrs. Brown was already getting a room for Farryn prepared.
"Stay as long as you need. Or at least until the house chases you out."
Kar was joking. Mostly. The house was patient, but one unsavory person found themselves at one of her parties found themselves supernaturally belched out into a street somewhere in the mortal plane. She never saw them again.
Farryn smiles when Kar agrees to let her give the dog a treat from the glass bowl. Farryn takes one out and offers it to the puppy. The little dog tilts his head to the right and Farryn giggles. They tell the dog "Sit!" And when he sits, they say "Good boy, here you go." They give him the treat, and he eagerly begins to eat it.
"Root Beer sounds good." Farryn says with a bright smile. They enjoy a good soda every now and then. It's fun to have it, and Farryn loves having fun.
"That would be good," Farryn replies when Kar mentions dogsitting for a few days. Farryn probably wouldn't be able to keep the puppy alive indefinitely. But a few days? They could manage that.
"Yeah," Farryn looks at the puppy with an affectionate gaze. They had never had any pets since their fish had died. But that doesn't mean they don't love animals. On the contrary. They love animals far too much to subject any animal to their care long-term. Since taking care of other things is not really their strong suit. Still, they could manage an animal for a few days at a time. When Kar asks if they're crashing as well, Farryn nods. "Yeah, if you don't mind putting up with me for a while." They chuckle. "I want to make sure my little furry friend finds a good home."

Oh no I missed coffee night!!!!
I wanted to ask you about Hitchcock 😔 If you're willing to answer, which movies of his do you think are overrated and which do you think are actually good? He's my most watched director (because film school) but I only genuinely like a few of his films and always disagreed with my classmates about which ones were the best
I feel like I'm holding up a Daffy Duck style sign that says "shoot me" because Hitchcock is so well thought of by cinephiles versus me, the basic horny mod who watches movies with hot people in them. With that said, I remember Rope, Dial M for Murder, North by Northwest, and To Catch a Thief all left me a bit flat, because I felt like he was prioritizing pushing technical limits or creating extravagant images over deeper characters and relationships. I love a good technical limit-pushing, but it needs to serve the story! And sometimes I feel like he has an idea he wants to try or an image he wants to show and puts so much focus on developing it that characters' reality and interest kind of falls by the wayside—they become pawns navigating his situations, instead of interesting characters in their own right.
To be fair, this is more a characteristic of his later work than his early work—The Lady Vanishes is one of my favorite movies, and I remember Notorious and Spellbound both being enjoyable when I watched them a few years ago. Again, basic film watcher here. Don't show this post to the Criterion collection.
#putting down the shoot me sign and backing away v fast#i just want to be clear i do NOT have cinephile movie taste. i like crowd pleasers and musicals and very silly movies.#i would be shot out of a film school in a cartoon cannon the minute they mentioned the word ~images~#with that said i am right and i should say it :) he is not that good of a director when it comes to storytelling :)#rope should be SO GOOD and....it is not. technically interesting. but not good!#posts that will get me murdered fr#asks#edit for more thoughts in the tags because this grinds my gears. lady vanishes works for me because there's lots of spookiness and a few#“wow!” pushing the limit things for film nerds. (the train noise is continuous & that was a big thing at the time)#but the train noise being continuous is SMART because it adds to the rising tension and sense of containment. essential to the story!#whereas rope does a similar trick (continuous looking shot) but it doesn't tie into the story in any way.#does it matter that we never look away from the living room with the corpse? does it mean something this happens in real-ish time?#you can make an argument it does textually but emotionally i never felt like rope's 1 shot was tying into *this* specific story.#like i thought it was called rope because the literal rope emotionally ties into the metaphorical rope of a neverending shot! but no#the tension never builds for me in rope and i think it's because not enough focus was spent on its characters or making sure the shot#echoed & or developed a point being made onscreen. you could make rope w/conventional cuts and edits and i dont think you would#emotionally end up with a significantly different movie. (it doesnt help that there are obvious seams in the shot at random places.)#all in all sometimes it feels like hitch is making a movie for people who understand what trick he's showing off#versus a movie for basic bitches like me who just want to hang out with some hot strange people for two hours#anyway. i feel like i have lost all my cred in one post. oh well. sorry hitch. lady vanishes is still great

Kar flipped through the dossier. Agata Espina, one of those true American success stories. Immigrant family, stepped away from a hard life and worked hard to become a historian. Kar could find a little kinship on that. Excellent marks in the proficiency test to boot.
The Bureau was hurting for agents; so many of her colleagues died or retired after everything-- but she couldn't blame them. Agent Espina would be some much needed new blood for a new Bureau.
Ashley's Head poke through the door of the study, letting Kar know the new agent had arrived.
"Come on in!" her voice was warm and welcoming.
Kar decided to greet her in the study. just like her Father had when he was alive. The study itself had been her father's, and now it was hers. The lamps have a warm glow, even with the fireplace wasn't lit. The walls were floor to ceiling full of books and curios-- with a whole other second level above. Aged photos from many decades, with different people, some familiar, some not. A large aquarium took one of the other walls--currently empty. A record player sat nearby some upholstered chairs.
"I'm Director Aster," she greeted, offering her hand to shake." Agata, right?"
