The Nimona movie could have been 30 minutes shorter if Ballister had just sent Ambrosius the full video. "You see, my kid couldn't have been mimicking the Director, simply because she was too busy mimicking YOU, darling. Oh, and did you see that part where the Director drove the sword into you??"

Here are the concepts for the siblings shadow forms! These are still not the finals as I want to refine them and try to make The Narrator at least a little more original.
The differences in stylings are somewhat reflective of their stories. I also wanted to include microphones in their designs, but I couldn’t really figure out what to do with The Director.

The Golden boy sits in his shimmering armor while the gilded Institute holds his own gleaming sword against his brilliant throat. This is his glorious duty.

WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT AMBROSIUS'S LINE
"What are we doing?"
Its near the part where Nimona's on her way to go to the statue and the Director issued the weaponry to fire at Nimona
That moment when Ambrosius said the line, standing while everyone screamed and ran around him and the city was being destroyed, you could see his realization that Ballister was right.
That the Director was doing things wrong.
That the Institute was a big sham in royal clothes.
That he was a part of the problem.
You could hear his realization.
Why are we attacking and harming everyone with the purpose of harming one scared lonely kid?

I actually much prefer the movie character design for the Director to the comic version
In the comic she was tall and gaunt and eventually revealed to be bald. Not exactly the height of female beauty and well in line with what is expected of a female villain
Her movie version on the other hand, was blonde and attractive in a Karen sort of way. She looks "normal" and unthreatening
And in a story about people who don't fit the mold, think that was the best choice they could have made for their antagonist

Ambrosius: Ballister has gone into hiding after murdering the Queen so I am now going to punch every single knight in their faces
Director: Why???
Ambrosius: He was pretty much 85% of my impulse control

"The Mother of Invention" really was such a perfect name for Project Freelancer's command ship. It's obviously a pun on that old saying about necessity being the mother of invention (in other words, desperate times lead to innovation) and it gives us a clear look at what the Director was thinking when he set up the project.
In his mind, the war was this pressure forcing him to push himself and his soldiers further than they could comfortably stand. He took it upon himself to turn that ship into a high stress environment, and he used that same pressure to shatter the Alpha into more and more fragments as he convinced it that the only way to survive was to evolve. Of course he knew that he was hurting Alpha and Carolina and the rest, but it was necessary if they were going to win.
He decided to push and push until something broke, because in his mind it was all necessary. They needed to win the war, they needed to make sure Allison's sacrifice wasn't in vain, they needed to bring her back.
Now, he was obviously wrong. The war ended without his ideal AI powered super soldiers ever hitting the battlefield, and Allison deserved to stay at rest. But what I find so interesting is that the Freelancers could never complete their training because the Director was too absorbed in his little experiments. Everything he did to them was supposedly out of necessity, and yet he put two AI in Carolina's head just to see what it would do to her. He intentionally made South feel underappreciated while heaping praise and rewards on North just to see how it would affect their sibling bond. He handed Sigma over to Maine while knowing the risks of their dynamic just to see what they'd become. While the Freelancers were in the thick of it I'm sure that all the ways they were being treated felt necessary in light of the circumstances, but one at a time they all came to realize how artificial those circumstances were.
The Director needed that noble purpose, love and heroism, humanity pushed to bright new frontiers by the fires of war. He needed to tell himself it was all invention stemming from necessity because he couldn't admit that he just wanted to play god with vulnerable people.
