Boxing is not for everyone. Not every man has the courage to put on a pair of gloves and step into a ring.

"MOE HERSCOVITCH, a swell fellow and a fine sportsman, also a Great War veteran is in a precarious condition as the result of being set upon when he went to the assistance of his nephew who was being roughly handled at Plage Laval … Herscovitch we are informed was handing out a beating to three men when allies came to their aid knocked him down and put the boots to him… He may lose the sight of one of his eyes, have the sight of another impaired .. Herscovitch was always a clean sportsman who was a terrific player for the old M.A.A.A. team in 1919… He was a fine boxer, an Olympic in fact and he went so far in the pro ring as to fight the great Mickey Walker with credit … We have known him for many years and never knew him to do an unsportsmanlike thing. So it would seem to be in order to have an investigation of the fracas leading up to his injury…We mean a provincial investigation and not one of those villagey things that puts such affairs to racial animosity... Herscovitch we feel sure didn't start the affray… Anyway he is badly injured and even if he was to blame a full investigation should follow. Buffalo and Cleveland have decided to stay with the American League. They will have to pull a lot of other clubs along with them. Their entry will likely only be delayed a year or so…." - from the Montreal Star. July 28, 1943. Page 22.

FOX Sports: Beyond The Glory - Mike Tyson
Source:The New Democrat  Mike Tyson was the most devastating and intimidating force in boxing for about five years from some point in 1985 to 1990 and I could end the story right there because that pretty much sums up his career. Oh wait, you want the rest of the story.  A man who was the most devastating and intimidating force in boxing for five years, who was undisputed World Heavyweight…

the body is such a strange and vapid creature. i am eating soup with noodles that i cooked in a microwave. i don't know how microwaves work, only that most of my meals come from her yellow mouth. i put mine on the fridge; i have to stand on tip toes to take the bowl out, balancing it on fingertips.
i have to eat soup because i'm coughing up blood.
when you have been raised wrong, conditions of alarm are offset. which is to say that three weeks ago, i had a panic attack because i thought i saw him the liquor store. i collapsed into a heap, ready to sob into multicolored gin bottles. it was just someone who looked a lot like him, working a shitty 9-5. the poor man. what must it be like, to have someone go pale at your profile.
i spoke too loudly during a zoom meeting, and nobody answered immediately. the shame of that scoured my entire ribcage clean. i hated the experience so much i wrote it down in my notes: a reminder not to be so fucking annoying!
but the conditions of alarm are met at the moment. i am well-and-truly ill, the blood in my hand and on the pavement. at this moment in dr. house episodes i would be swaying, and then i'd collapse delicately and awaken in a crisp hospital bed. instead my dog bites my hand in excitement. now there is blood on his muzzle.
i am diabolically, almost robotically calm about it. i laugh about it, actually. i am feeling positively waifish. i am one nightgown away from holding an oil lamp up and saying milord? are thee turnin' in for the night? new blood is pinkish, almost feminine in her brightness, a tease into the tissue.
i haven't ever cried at a funeral. i didn't know you were actually allowed to. it felt like new blood - a way of making it about me, when my job is to flatter the shadows and stay tucked out of the way. i am always doing something for someone else. i am always earning my keep. i am always loveable, because i will do what it takes to make you able to love me.
here are the personal things i have been worried about in the last three weeks: if the spider i put outside was now able to restart her life. if an hour and a half every day is enough walking for a greyhound. if i drink too much coffee. if all my friends secretly hate me. if i'm a bad friend and i should be sad about it. what happens after this next goalpost? what if i'm deeply and inherently boring?
i cough up blood. my mouth tastes like iron gummies. i am not worried about this. my body is a seahorse. my body is an ocean wave. i can detach from it, be outside of it - just float away.

Hey y'all! Work's been more stressful than usual (I'm covering for a coworker's vacation) and I'd love to hear some funny work stories if y'all have any you'd like to share. I'll start it off with some of the weirdest contractor interactions I've ever had: - the contractor who never went anywhere without his cat carrier full of live ferrets - the contractor who, every single time he called me, said "aren't you proud of me? You're proud of me, right? I'm your best contractor?" (he was not) - another time I was covering for a coworker and so handling paperwork for contractors I usually don't work with, and one of them spent a long time on the phone trying to persuade me to move into his cabin in the woods. His methods of persuasion were twofold: he explained how cool his truck is in intense detail (I do not care about trucks) and he bragged about how many laws he was breaking while contracting with the company I work for. I, of course, told my boss, because a lot of the laws he was breaking were basic safety things???? But him trying to brag about breaking laws to the person who handles the paperwork he just admitted to falsifying was hilarious to me

I'm not normally all that in to boxing, but after all the bloody drama they've had to endure this olympics I'm hoping Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting have a good finals run.
