They totally could have! But it’s impossible for them to let their guard down long enough to try. James and Sirius haven’t been around for 12 years but, still, when they meet again, the default reaction is wariness.

And not only that. There are deep-rooted fears preventing them from resolving their differences. Snape remembers, most likely with bitterness, how Prefect Remus Lupin did not interceed on his behalf no matter how dire the bullying got. To him, Lupin is a person that will certainly throw him to the wolves (haha) just because he dislikes him. And despite this, he makes Lupin the Wolfbane potion religiously and doesn’t even tamper with it to take the piss. Now, does he do it out of professional pride? A “I’ll make the best potion you have ever had and you will always know that it was I who made it”? Or is it because, as you say, Lupin was never actively involved in the bullying and Snape can find it in himself to be kind? It doesn’t seem likely that he would see in Lupin a potential friend, since he never helped him out, but it could be a way to telegraph that they can be allies. He also drops unsubtle hints to the students about Lupin being a werewolf, but I could argue that he knows there are some Nosey Brats in the class and he remembers too well what happened to him for being nosey about Lupin. Or maybe he’s petty. Honestly, I prefer to think that he was being petty.

And Lupin, at this point, must feel torn in two different directions. On the one hand, he wants to show Snape that he “grew out” of his past behaviour—even if he stayed in the sidelines with the bullying. He wants to be an adult, and have a cordial relationship with his coworker because he isn’t into petty feuds that had nothing to do with him.

On the other hand, he can’t. He still makes fun of Snape and—depending on your where are your limits for what is humour and what is to be a bitch—brings up things James and Sirius said to humiliate him. He perceives Snape’s hostility and resorts to holding that power he once had over him, as part of the group of bullies.

Personally I think Lupin didn’t want to be called out for being a passive bully and pokes fun at Snape to remind him that they aren’t the same. As if to say, I don’t dislike you because of my prejudices, I dislike you because of yours. As you say, OP, both of them are in circumstances that make them vulnerable to be ostracized (poverty) and even hunted down (lycanthropy) and Lupin deals with this by broadcasting as loud as he can that he isn’t the same boat as Snape. “Oh, that dude? Yeah, he’s lame. Not me, though. I’m the funny teacher, the friendly guy.”

I just think the dynamic between lupin and snape is so untapped because it's obvious in the books the remus was not into the bullying severus went through at the hands of his best friend's, but the fear of being ostracized and cast out was too great for him to interfere, and perhaps if he had the whole dynamic between the marauders and severus could have been shifted and i think that remus and severus would have made better friends than enemies and you can sort of see that in prisoner of azkaban like they obviously don't LIKE each other but they COULD idk dude is this thing on???

I have been sooo busy this month, therefore it is just a portrait study this month :') I am working on another really awesome art project, which has completely nothing to do with my Sirius works. However, the other project might help me to live off my artsy stuff one day. Perhaps. 🥲 (and it is also really fun!) This time I tried to paint a more dangerous, angry looking Sirius. I also recognized I am painting him slightly too young (in my opinion), so I also tried to fix that.^^

🌘Professor Lupin🌒

I recently reread Prisoner of Azkaban and I can not appreciate this man enough. The tragedies of the Marauders will forever haunt me, but I will also continue to find great joy in their existence 🥹✨

I have this image in my head of Remus walking around Hogwarts as a teacher, mourning the loss of his friends but celebrating their memories as well. He continues to tease Snape, he taunts Peeves, he jokes around with his students and he helps them cope with the world they’re discovering. Copious amounts of chocolate and tea are consumed when hanging out with your favourite teacher; professor Lupin :) 💫

Having him teach only the one year is outrageous, but it was a year to remember :)
