I’ve waited my ENTIRE life for this moment, being able to share the brilliance of this @wearedelasoul song and Dave 🔌2️⃣🕊️and @plugwondelasoul 🔌1️⃣🔊 flawless verses! Plus the energy and vibes that @inmaseowetrust @djprincepaul brought on production and the horns by Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis & Fred Wesley And the members of the native tongues lending their voices and vibes to it as well. I remember where I was when I first heard this song I walked into Stussy/Union store on LA Brea to visit the homies and this song was playing… (Study/Union store ALWAYS got advance copies of all the dope music.) I stopped in my tracks and it was the beginning of Dave’s verse and the Pos followed with his. I was in AWE! I made them rewind it and play it for me 3 more times. It was high ART by the only group that was capable of doing it (in my eyes in 1993) It to me is De La’s best song and I will die on this hill! Salute to the big bros and the whole De La Family! The masses FINALLY get to hear what a Supa MC really is. They’re the Co-fathers to so many styles in hip hop AND in music as a whole. They helped shape myself and my entire friend circle. “Plug 1 Plug 2 …Plug Tunin” acrylic, mixed media on wood panel ‘And now for my next number I'd like to return to the classics Perhaps the most famous classic In all the world of music’ Before “Plug Tunin’” wound up on the demo that landed De La Soul a deal with Tommy Boy Records and eventually served as their breakout single in 1988, the song began as a live act performed over a famous breakbeat. “We would do it off of The Honey Drippers’ ‘Impeach The President,’” Maseo explained in a 2014 interview with Vibe magazine. “Somehow we started to make a conceptual song, but it really didn’t become much of anything until Pos found a sample.” While Posdnuos is the one who found the sample that ended up serving as a backbone for the song’s instrumental, he credits two pioneering rap groups for inspiring the original dynamics of the track. “In the beginning ‘Plug Tunin’’ was really a routine,” he told Vibe. “Being young, we were still taking a lot of lessons from groups like Cold Crush Brothers and Crash Crew.” Cold Crush Brothers and Crash Crew informed the initial live version, but it was a Pos’ copy of The Invitations’ “Written On The Wall” that sparked the version of “Plug Tunin’” people know and love today — as well as the song’s name. “Funny enough, on the b-side of ‘Written On The Wall’, it said Plug Side,” Pos told Vibe. “So that’s the only reason we titled it “Plug Tunin.’” “We thought the intro was hilarious, so we just threw it on at the beginning of the song. Influential albums in my life #31. Stetsasonic should be cannon for every hip hopper. These guys broke so much ground musically, lyrically, politically etc. Boasting six members including Daddy-O who helped bring us Freestyle Fellowship and Junior Mafia, Frukwan later of the Gravediggaz and one of my all time favorites DJ/Producer Prince Paul who brought us De La Soul and is one half of Handsome Boy Modeling School. I wore this tape out in 1991. The samples are amazing, the lyrics are poignant and revolutionary. Plus, Stet is the original hip hop band, #TheRoots know that. This is their 3rd lp and unfortunately their last. Layered, intelligent, funky and as groundbreaking as any album of its era or any era. Plus, if you’re a De La Soul fan you’ll definitely hear the origins of the bug out pieces that became a defining element of the Native Tongue sound.
