When Lucy Lovett (Ashley Greene) falls and bumps her head she wakes up with a wedding dress in her hand but only remembers Zach Callahan (Andrew Walker), the fianceé she broke up with two years ago in Bedford Harbor, Maine, but not current fiancé Brad Martin (Clayton Chitty) in Portland, where she runs an art foundation. Lucy learns from Dr. Caroline Albright (Jackée Harry) that she is suffering from retrograde amnesia, which should soon pass. As she drives from Portland to Bedford Harbor with her friend Anna (Donna Benedicto), Lucy reminisces about the family cabin left to her by her Aunt Audrey, who founded the art foundation Lucy now runs. Lucy throws herself into all the Christmas traditions she used to participate in with Zach, hoping it will jog her memory about their breakup and allow her to move on. She attends the annual Harbor Skate with Zach, where his brother Beau (Preston Vanderslice) strikes up an immediate friendship with Anna. Zach’s current girlfriend Morgan LeBlanc (Debs Howard) shows up and awkwardness ensues among the trio. Zach takes Lucy to buy a tree and she wants to know why they broke up but he is not ready to talk to her about it, leaving her still in the dark. Brad surprises Lucy in Bedford Harbor, and during the snowman building competition, Lucy/Brad and Zach/Morgan don’t really make good teams, while Beau/Anna win. Lucy enters The Silent Night Pie Auction and Zach makes the winning bid for her pie, while Brad ends up winning the one baked by Morgan. Brad decides to go back to Portland and breaks off the engagement with Lucy, telling her it’s obvious she has unresolved feelings for Zach. Lucy leads the children in a Christmas-themed art project and loves doing it. Morgan tells Zach she sees his unresolved feelings for Lucy and sweetly breaks off their relationship, letting him off the hook, so to speak. Lucy helps Zach decorate the Roadhouse Restaurant. Lucy realizes that her role as CEO of her Aunt Audrey’s art foundation is totally bureaucratic and that she has not been following her passion there. Lucy finally remembers the breakup, and that it was Zach who broke it off with her, which is why she ran away to Portland two years earlier to lose herself in taking over the art foundation. Furious at Zach for letting her think all this time that she had broken up with him, Lucy walks away from him. Back in Portland, a long-lost letter from her Aunt Audrey tells Lucy everything she needs to know in order to get her life back on the right track. With her memory completely resolved and a new sense of clarity, Lucy makes the trip back to Bedford Harbor to find Zach. What happens next will either close the door on her past with Zach or pave the way for a beautiful future together.

Plot Synopsis: Nell isn’t thrilled about reading Small Town Christmas at Emmett’s bookstore. He’d stood her up on their first date with no explanation. After seeing Nell in town with Brad, a developer, Emmett assumes they’re together, and later refers to her as merely a “former acquaintance.” Hurt, Nell walks around town and meets Marnie, Emmett’s niece. He’d written about his sister’s death, but Nell never received the letter. Seeing Emmett in a new light, Nell thinks she could fall for him. But when he caves into Brad’s offer for his bookstore, Nell wonders if Emmett was just romanticized fiction all along. (x)

In My Humble Opinion: One of the most common tropes in made-for-TV Christmas movies is the tales of women who visit small towns and decide to give up their previous hopes and dreams for the small town business owner they fell in love with in ten days. Of the roundabout 400 movies I have reviewed on this blog, I feel like around 300 of them center around some version of that trope. And it’s not one of my favorite tropes to begin with because I feel like the.re’s some sexist connotations behind it (why can’t women like enjoy their careers?

What I’m getting at is the idea that it takes a lot for me to get behind these small town Christmas movies wholeheartedly, and Small Town Christmas offered nothing to get behind.

The small town at the center of the film doesn’t offer much that you’d find particularly charming. The couple at the center of the film don’t have the chemistry that makes you root for them across the odds. The kid is cute, but she also is so worried about her grades that it gave me anxiety.

At the end of the made-for-TV Christmas season, I look for films that stand out. That offer something new. That offer something fun. 

Small Town Christmas just offers more of the same.

Watch If: Even the flu can’t stop you from bugging your clients, if you don’t think bookstores should be cataloged in a conventional way, or if you were an astute kid.

Skip If: You don’t think joining a book club permanently sound funds, if you don’t think New York is all that exciting or if your Christmas plans involve take out and working.

Synopsis: 

Literature professor Amy Winslow (Jill Wagner) specializes in crime fiction at Elmstead College in the Pacific Northwest, and after years of teaching her Mystery 101 class she’s become an expert in figuring out whodunnit. She’s also good at sizing people up, which is why when she meets Detective Travis Cole (Kristoffer Polaha) in a local café she instantly knows by his accent he’s from Chicago and that he’s new to the police force and no longer married. How? There’s red mud on his shoes, indicating he’s staying at the Scarlet Ridge Inn, and the fourth finger on his left hand is tanned except for a sliver of lighter skin where there once was a ring.

Along with Travis at the café is his colleague Claire Tate (Sarah Dugdale), a plainclothes detective who was once in Amy’s crime fiction class. Now solving real crimes, Claire is with Travis to investigate the theft of a genetically engineered plant missing from the Life Science Lab. Professor Sara Morales (Tosca Baggoo), who reported the theft, has pointed to the motive for the crime, claiming that the plant is no ordinary shrub, as it was created to resist climate change and is potentially worth millions.

Although Travis can’t discuss the details of his investigation, he and Amy do engage in playful banter. She’s at the café with her grad student/assistant Bud (Preston Vanderslice) waiting for Lacey (Louriza Tronco), another of Amy’s students, who is going to work with Bud on the mid- term mystery. But when Lacey doesn’t show, Amy is worried. Lacey was uncharacteristically preoccupied in class, and Amy suspects the girl is having trouble with her boyfriend, who hasn’t been answering calls. As it turns out, Amy’s worries are justified when she gets a disturbing call from Lacey, who is about to describe a scary message smeared on her mirror, until the phone suddenly goes dead. Now the fictional crime professor fears she’s facing a crime that is all too real, especially because Lacey and her boyfriend have disappeared.

Reporting Lacey as a missing person, Amy now finds herself working directly with handsome Detective Cole as the mystery of the plant theft becomes entwined with the enigma of Lacey’s disappearance, and the shocking discovery of her boyfriend at the bottom of a mountain overlook. Adding to the suspense is the sudden “suicide” of Professor Miller (Alvin Sanders), whose office window just happens to look out on the Life Science Lab. As Amy figures out whois behind her student’s disappearance and the two deaths, she also discovers who stole the plant, and puts her own life in danger. Now Travis must do some quick sleuthing himself, or the romance that was blooming with the Mystery 101 professor could quickly die on the vine.

Synopsis: 

Crime Fiction Professor Amy Winslow (Jill Wagner) and Detective Travis Cole (Kristoffer Polaha) have a real mystery of love and revenge on their hands. It all starts when Travis’ partner Claire (Sarah Dugdale) gets whacked on the head investigating a break-in at a pharmacy. Recovering in the hospital, Claire can’t remember anything except the mechanical toy chimp playing cymbals she glimpsed before getting hit. Working the case, Travis questions Josie (Christie Burke), the drugstore manager, who says the security cameras were knocked out by a storm, and all that was taken was $500 and lots of medications.

Meanwhile, another crime is about to take center stage when movie icon Bella Brightman (Rekha Sharma) arrives in town to star in Shadow of Death. Put on by the Community Theater, the play highlights revenge and reward, common motives of detective fiction that Amy teaches. Her graduate assistant Bud (Preston Vanderslice) is the stage manager, and her student Lacey (Louriza Tronco) is an actor, so Amy and many in her class attend the play on opening night. Also in the audience are Amy’s father and Travis, who Amy often helps solve crimes with herexpertise in literary whodunits. But no one expects to see an actual attempted murder on stage when a fake gun appears to fire a real bullet that shatters a mirror near Bella. Now Travis must stop the performance, explaining that the theater has become a crime scene.

While the bullet is tested for fingerprints, Travis interviews everyone with access to the gun, including set designer Karl (Aaron Douglas) and Bella’s ex-husband Sebastian (Colin Lawrence). Karl was in an argument with Bella before the show, and Sebastian was at a dress rehearsal Amy attended where she found a Valentine under the seats that read: “Be Mine...as soon as You Know Who is out of the way.” Suspicious, Amy shows the card to Travis, suggesting he interview Bella’s current husband Duncan (Matthew Kevin Anderson) and Elliot (Luke Camilleri), an actor in the play, who has a crush on the movie star. Amy also tells Travis that Bella’s life was in danger earlier when a stage light fell from the catwalk and barely missed her.

Though shaken, Bella insists on having the opening night party. Despite a few squabbles with Elliot and Sebastian initiated by drunk and jealous Duncan, the party is a success, until Bella is found dead the next morning from a heart attack. Tracing the cause to a drug stolen from pharmacy run by Josie, Elliot’s girlfriend, Travis gets a warrant to search Elliot’s house and finds garbage bags full of pharmaceuticals. But forensics found Sebastian’s fingerprints on the catwalk where the light fell and on the bullet. Karl, too, is a suspect when it’s discovered he owed Bella $100,000. Finally, Duncan could have put the heart attack inducing powder in his wife’s protein shake out of pure jealousy. With motives and suspects galore, Travis has his work cut out for him. But when Amy finds the toy chimp, she solves murder mystery and cracks the pharmacy break-in, and cleverly gets confessions as well.

Synopsis: 

When Crime Fiction Professor Amy Winslow (Jill Wagner) goes to her office Sunday night, she surprises an intruder who nearly mows her down trying to get away. Calling Detective Travis Burke (Kristoffer Polaha) to the scene of the crime, the two make an odd discovery – nothing has been stolen. It’s just the beginning of a series of strange events – and murders – that lead to the arrest of none other than Graham Winslow (Robin Thomas), the famed author of the bestselling Atticus Keller detective novels, who also happens to be Amy’s father.

Charged with killing Betsy Crane (Marci T. House) and burning down her motorhome, Graham seems to be the least likely suspect, especially since Betsy is the publisher who launched his career. Nevertheless, all the evidence points to Graham. Not only did he recently end his publishing relationship with the victim, but also a nearly empty can of kerosene and a bloody paperweight was found in his trunk. In addition to that, a man was just shot in his car rightoutside of Graham’s house! With no one else to charge, Travis has no other choice but to bring in the respected author for questioning.

Convinced her father is innocent, Amy sets out to find the real killer with the help of her graduate assistant Bud (Preston Vanderslice) and her good friend Holly (Amanda Wong). Together they write down the names of possible suspects, and at the top of the list is Detective Jenk (Eric Keenleyside) in town for the “Murder We Wrote” book festival. Amy first met Jenk outside her office the day after the break-in, claiming he was looking for her father in hopes of collaborating on a book. Checking up on Jenk, Travis finds out he’s a dirty cop who’s about to lose his job.Even more suspicious, Jenk is seen in shouting match with Betsy, claiming her publishing house owes him $10,000 for being a resource for one of her authors.

That author is Rick Fitch (Milo Shandel), another major suspect on Amy’s list, who happens to be her father’s literary nemesis, and the reason Graham switched publishing houses. It seems Betsy leaked one of Graham’s manuscripts to Fitch, who then turned around and plagiarized the book. Finally, there’s Hannah (Rhona Rees), a crazed fan who slashes Graham’s tires so she can give him a ride home. But why would she kill Betsy and then frame the man she idolizes?

With two people murdered, the last thing this case needs is another body, but that’s exactly what’s thrown into the mix when Rick Fitch is found dead at the bottom of a canyon, with Betsy’s phone on his body! Luckily, that clears Graham of her murder, which makes his new editor, Celia (Nathalie Boltt) quite happy. She’s clearly quite taken with her new client, and Graham is certainly smitten with her. With three dead, motives galore, and no clear killer, Travis and Amy have their work cut out for them. All they know for sure is that with all these literary people in town, words can definitely kill.

Bethany selects the child’s home, unaware her dad has no clue of the contest until Bethany and her camera crew arrive. Walking into an uncomfortable situation, she realizes Grant is attached to his house full of memories of his late wife and doesn’t want a makeover. But encouraged by his daughter’s enthusiasm, Grant slowly warms to the idea, and even begins to enjoy the process, not to mention Bethany. Even TV viewers see their chemistry and want more. However, Bethany is unsure a career can mix with a relationship, or if Grant is ready to open his heart again. Bethany and Grant each must let go of something to make any relationship work. She must let go of the idea that her career will stall if she lets love into her life, and he must release the notion that his heart isn’t big enough for both memories of his wife, and a future with someone else.

Synopsis:

Determined to prove her friend’s innocence, Amy enlists the help of Detective Travis Burke (Polaha), whose predecessor is the very same cop who convicted Amy’s colleague. Now the retired police officer is stubbornly insisting his arrest should stand and he’s going to great lengths to see that it does. But Amy’s not the only one who thinks his conviction should be overturned. A young woman has arrived in town who is working on a book about the case, which is remarkably similar to a five- year-old unsolved murder involving a different poisoned professor who had just accused a student of plagiarism. Both murders certainly bring a whole new meaning to the age old saying “publish or perish.”

She is in her element with the start of the Christmas season, pulling out all the decorative stops both at the retirement village and at the cozy home she shares with her ebullient five-year-old son, Max (Wyatt Hunt).

Abbey’s talents have hardly gone unnoticed. She has a devoted fan in her friend, Caroline Sinclair (Donna Mills), the down-to-earth widow of a prominent businessman. Eager to see Abbey resume her career, Caroline urges her to meet with her son, Nick (Matthew Davis), about taking on a major project: redecorating the family estate. Synopsis: 

On the train headed to a Christmas retreat, novelist and freelance writer Katie (Maggie Lawson) meets Evergreen native Ben (Paul Greene), who tries to convince her that Evergreen is more than a tourist destination. When Katie’s magazine-editor mother assigns her an article about Evergreen, she researches this firsthand. Katie joins the historical club meeting with Ben, Hannah (Rukiya Bernard), Carol (Barbara Niven), Joe (Malcolm Stewart), Ezra (Chris Cope) and David (Marlon Kazadi), and they talk about the town’s hidden time capsule. Later, everyone bidsfarewell to Allie (Ashley Williams) as she leaves on a trip to Paris.

Hannah is devastated when she breaks the town’s snow globe and takes it to Elliott (Antonio Cayonne) to be fixed. There is a spark between them, but they are too shy to confess their feelings. Elliott discovers a key carved inside the snow globe, which eventually leads David to find the real one under the town’s sleigh. Katie grows closer to Ben and learns that he was a journalist before moving back to Evergreen to help his grandmother.

With Carol’s help, David finds the time capsule: a larger than life Advent calendar! Having kept the location secret for years, Nick (Keith Martin Gordey) and Nan (Patty McCormack) delight in sharing the story of how the time capsule came to be. Michelle (Holly Robinson Peete) leads the daily reveal by pulling names out of a hat. Later, Ben finds a draft of Katie’s newspaper article on the library printer and its cynical view of the town leads to their first argument. Katie and Ben quickly make peace while ice skating, each apologizing for being hard on the other. Michelle reunites with her boyfriend Thomas (Colin Lawrence), who has returned from logging, and is happier than ever in their relationship.

Despite Lisa (Jill Wagner) sharing how happy she is with her decision to move to Evergreen, Katie prepares to leave. She decides to stay one extra day when Ben asks and opens the next Advent gift: her choice of a Christmas activity for the whole town to do together. After making a snowman with the town, Hannah and Elliott find Hannah’s mother’s long-lost wedding ring. Hannah finally confesses her feelings for one Elliott, who feels the same way.

Katie leaves Evergreen, and begrudgingly turns in her article. Surprisingly, her mother encourages her to instead use her experience as inspiration for her next novel. Katie spends a wonderful time in the city sharing Christmas traditions with her mom. Back in Evergreen, Nan encourages Ben to apply for the job in the city, and even submits his resume for him.

As distance separates Katie and Ben, they must decide if their connection was just a holiday romance or a love everlasting. As they hope for a holiday miracle, Evergreen’s magic may have one more Christmas surprise in store for another special couple.
