I mentioned writing my paper on crime reduction about hate crimes against trans people to my lecturer because I obviously think about it all the time and he said none of his students have ever written a paper focused on trans people and that he'd be excited to read it
Great and all but finding enough references is going to be a nightmare, it's so niche and so under researched that my usual ~10 for a 1500 word report is going to be a stretch
Proves that it's even more necessary though
#he even mentioned that it would be great post grad/phd topics#cool cool but im not prepared to think about that thank u#i am just a little guy studying a hyperfixation of mine not a future doctor i dont think#we need more queer and trans and neurodivergent research in all scientific fields#idk if i actually want a career in that tho#forensic psychology#psychology#student#university#university student#trans#ftm#lgbt#lgbtq#queer#transgender#tw hate crime

So I got tagged in a post game thing by @halfblackwolfdemon (Thank you so much btw) but I don't really know enough people to tag to follow the rules of the game nor do I necessarily feel COMFORTABLE tagging people when I don't really interact with many people here on tumblr, but I thought the game itself was fun so I'm using it as a distraction from my homework and as an excuse to post a line from Part 15 of But I Want to Be Let In, Not Out
So here's the latest line from my WIP of Part 15!
Danyal could still feel their blood caked under his fingernails.
#dpxdc#But I Want to Be Let In; Not Out#Part 15#Here's a fun little sneak preview while I finish out my internship and get ready for the summer semester#Current plan is to have Part 15 out around Mother's Day but we'll see#My internship has been kicking my ASS#I am absolutely being irresponsible by scrolling through tumblr instead of watching my session videos#Watching myself do therapy for hours on end? Not fun#0/10 recommend but like good for future development of my career as a therapist#Still it's nice to take a little break before I get back to the grind#I'm so excited for this installment#Y'all better be prepared for MOMMY ISSUES: THE FIC

to make up for the fact that I'll have to get up for therapy when I'd rather be sleeping, I've decided to just conveniently "forget" the questionnaire thingy at home. As a treat.
#LOL literally last session I told her that @ school sometimes I'd pretend to have forgotten assignments/etc if they made me anxious#um. let's play 'can my therapist spot the very obvious thing I'm doing'?#she's a therapist in training btw. so like. I'm helping her by not being a model patient. I'm preparing her for her career.#You're welcome future patients <3#doddie redet#good night!!!

No. It makes sense for some exams to be open-book, but not all of them. University isn't supposed to be easy and stress-free, and you're not there to learn how to take notes and look things up - these are the skills you should already have before you enter higher education, and then you naturally get better at them as you attend classes, etc. Some things are stressful, life is stressful, and the best thing you can do is learn how to cope with it.
Also, higher education isn't for everyone, nor should it be, that's fine and normal. If you really hate it, you're better off doing something else for your own good. It doesn't matter if it's because you're not good at studying, not enjoying the world of academia, don't know why you're even there in the first place, or are just plain lazy and would rather watch Netflix than put in any work outside of the classroom.
Imagine future doctors were not expected to learn anything by heart. They'd be pretty much learning on the job. Some disciplines do rely more on e.g. writing papers and less on being able to memorise a lot of information, but you still need to know at least the very basics of your subject. What would be the point of spending three years at university if a 'specialist' knew about as much about their own subject as I would if I just researched it for one day?
This applies to Humanitites too, by the way. If you have a degree in, say, Modern Languages, you're supposed to be able to speak said languages. That requires you to actually sit down and learn them, anybody can use a dictionary and Google Translate, you don't need a degree for that.
#i dont like exams either#but theyre a necessary evil#also university is more about teaching you how to do independent research and preparing you for a potential future career in academia#its not there to teach you basic life skills you could learn anywhere else#if you want something more practical you'd be happier with an apprenticeship#or these special third level institutions that are very practice oriented but i dont know if all countries have them#also open-book exams tend to be harder than normal exams which makes them even more stressful#we had open book exams during covid and they were the hardest exams ive ever taken in my life#and also after covid these were a little easier#but what makes them harder is that you have to be really careful you dont run out of time

Security experts believe that Anonymous Sudan is actually a Russian hacking group aimed at causing trouble in the West. The AO3 admins even wrote on their Twitter that experts believe this group is lying about their affiliation and reasons for attacking AO3, so take everything they claim with a grain of salt.
In addition, they are also demanding a ransom of $30,000 in bitcoin in exchange for stopping the attacks... on a volunteer site for fan-fiction. Thus, while it is also unfortunate for them, it also means that AO3 may not be able to pay the ransom to stop the attacks. Normally, in cases like that, an attacked business would simply pay the ransom to get their business up and going as fast as possible again (and usually it would work), but it doesn’t look like this’ll be the case for AO3.
Thus, all I’ll say is, we may have to be prepared for AO3 to be down for a while. The actors have threatened to keep attacking for “weeks” until the ransom is paid. Best case scenario, the AO3 volunteers manage to fight off the attack before then (or the attackers get tired of attacking, which I doubt), and worst case scenario, they hold to their promise.

Spreading the word because the original post is gone now (screenshots from a post I saw earlier today):
TLDR: ao3 is currently under attack, and you need to stay off the site to give the volunteers a chance to fix things
reblog this as much as you can!!
EDIT:
So it seems that there’s no reason to believe the reasoning behind the attacks coming from the group attacking ao3. I’ve seen countless other sources saying that they’ve lied during other attacks and this is no different
another update: the ao3 social media accounts have started to say that if it’s up for you, you can use it. If it’s not working for you though, you probably should stop reloading your page over and over again. That’s still going to overload their system
SECOND EDIT:
looks like ao3 has just been entirely shut down for now (9:02 pm PST)
#and like. obviously take this with a grain of salt too#but the way it stands#we may have to be prepared for the long haul w/o access#whoo boi#my career as a cyber expert cannot come fast enough#maybe i'll volunteer or something in the near future#anyways#ao3#cybersecurity#ddos

Regency!John Price who inherited his brothers duke title, because his brother died without an heir. John was the second oldest son, and he never thought about being the successor to the title, so he chose a military career.
He was a captain who fought wars and won them, not some lord who fancied balls and dressed in fancy clothing. But now he doesn’t have a choice. John comes back home after he has been badly injured in the battle, he was shot in his leg, and he had to use a wheelchair for quite some time.
When he comes home, to the new house and staff who pities him, he doesn’t feel like a man he once was. At the first ball he must attend he can see everyone eyes on him as he stumbles with his cane. He absolutely hates it. So, he makes a plane, he has to quickly marry some girl, make an heir and go live to the countryside where everyone will leave him alone.
You were on the other hand the youngest daughter of noble family. You weren’t rich, but your sisters and brothers married well, so you could keep good family reputation. Now it was your turn to marry, and as you were introduced to the society you quickly came to the realization, that you will probably end as a wife of some old man, who could be your grandfather.
So, when your cousin Johnny mentions, that his loyal friend and mentor John Price is looking for a wife you are interested. He tells you that John is a duke now and that he wants to get married as soon as possible. From Johnnys stories you know that John is a good man, who will hopefully respect you and treat you well.
You don’t get to meet your husband till the day of the wedding. The whole engagement is short and feels very official. He writes you a letter with things that you should know about your new home and your mother and sisters help you prepare for the married life.
When you finally see your future husband standing in the church, you’re quite surprised. He is very handsome, older than you, probably in his late 30s, but you’re sure that if he waited a little, he could find a better wife that you will be. John on the other hand is smitten by you, he also doesn’t understand why you would choose to marry him.
After the ceremony you immediately leave the town. He is very quiet the whole ride to his mansion and even thought you have many questions you stay quiet too. You arrive late in the night, exhausted from the long travel, but the only thing that concerns you is the wedding night. You heard a lot of horrible stories told by maids about their first nights with their husbands. The only thing that John does is that he shows you your room, tells you which butler to call if you have any troubles and he is gone. You’re left in the huge mansion alone and confused.
The breakfast takes place in the dining room. You sit at the table so far from John that you would have to shout to get his attention. He ignores you most of the time. At first you don’t mind it, you finally have some sort of freedom, you explore the land, the house and you find a huge library with many books you want to read.
But after some time, you start to crave his attention. The maids don’t want to be your friends, they think that it is highly inappropriate, you as a couple don’t attend any balls and there is no noble lady in the near distance you could visit and be friends with.
So, you start to write a diary, you write about how you feel and how would you like your husband to actually acknowledge you. Sometimes you also mention that you find him very attractive and the romance novels that you found in the library don’t help your imagination.
One time you forget your diary in the library and John accidentally picks it up. He thinks its some book that he hasn’t read yet. When he realizes that it is your handwriting, he knows that he should put it down, it is not right to invade your privacy. But then he sees his name there and he must know what you write about him.
He reads the whole paragraphs about how your meetings in the dinning room leaves you all flustered and how you crave his attention. He didn’t think that a young girl like you could find him attractive, and he wanted to be a good husband and leave you as much freedom as you could want. He didn’t want to pressure you into any kind of intimate relationship even though he was pressured by the rest of his family to have an heir. John leaves your diary where he found it, without any evidence that he read it.
The next morning, he invites you to eat breakfast with him in the garden. It is far more intimate, and you finally have a conversation with him. He asks you questions about your hobbies, your family and if you like it here.
It finally feels like he is courting you and you leave every encounter with him with rosy cheeks and butterflies in your stomach. He invites you on walks where he holds your hand as you tell him about your day or about the new book you just left. You spend the whole days together learning about each other.
John tells you stories about the war, the battles he fought. His leg heals up perfectly and now, that he is healthy again, he takes you with him when he goes riding. When you ask him if he likes the hight society he tells you the truth. He tells you how much he despises the formal event and the balls and suddenly it all makes sense to you.
You finally understand why he wanted to marry so quickly and why you live alone in the middle of nowhere. You tell him that you loved the dancing and the beautiful gown you could wear at balls but now you don’t mind the quiet life. Now you have him and that is all that matters.
One evening he makes a ball just for you. He invites a musician to play, he buys you an expensive gown and you pretend that you are at some formal event. It’s just the two of you dancing, laughing and drinking expensive champaign he bought for the ball. You dance the whole night and after he walks you to your bedroom he kisses you. It is a soft kiss, just your lips barely touching, but it starts a fire in you, and you want more.
When John realizes that you’re not pulling away he deepens the kiss. He knows that you have no experiences, and he wants to show you that he will treat you well. He spends the night with you, showing you in many ways how much he loves you.
And when you finally fall asleep, he thinks how lucky he is to find a wife like you. When you wake up and you see your husband sleeping in your bad you are very grateful that you accidentally left your diary in the library open on the page that mentioned how hot he was. Such a shame you didn’t come up with the plan a little earlier.

updates as of 22 oct
Travis Dermott knew that he would draw attention with his actions in the Coyotes’ home opener against the Anaheim Ducks at Mullett Arena on Saturday. The Arizona defenseman just hoped that the spotlight might shine on the issue that he was addressing, not on him.
“You don’t really want to go against rules that are put in place by your employer, but there’s some people who took some positive things from it,” Dermott said. “That’s kind of what I’m looking to impact.
“You want to have everyone feel included and that’s something that I have felt passionate about for a long time in my career. It’s not like I just just jumped on this train. It’s something that I’ve felt has been lacking in the hockey community for a while. I feel like we need supporters of a movement like this; to have everyone feel included and really to beat home the idea that hockey is for everyone.”
“I won’t lie,” said Dermott, who is playing on a one-year, two-way contract. “From the outside, it’s easy to see that I’m putting my career on the line for something. I definitely went through some emotional ups and downs that night, not regretting anything by any means, but I’d love to have maybe done a couple of steps a little different by making sure that everyone was aware of what was going on before I did it.
“I don’t want to put my teammates or my coaches or my GMs or the equipment managers in any kind of bad light when it’s their job to kind of look out for something like this happening. It was definitely something that I did just by myself and was prepared to kind of deal with whatever repercussions the league decides to push towards that. I’m not going to back off and say that this battle is won, but we’re going to find better ways to do it.”
As Dermott noted, LGBTQ+ inclusion is an issue that he has supported for a long time. Without getting into specifics, Dermott said the issue is personal for him because it impacts people close to him.
“I’d be lying if I said I haven’t shed tears about this on multiple occasions,” he said. “So yeah, it’s something I’m definitely very passionate about.
“I’ve met a lot of people that from the outside, it looks like they have everything going right in their life and they have a smile on their face every time they talk to you. But sometimes when we get closer to people and get comfortable enough for them to open up to you, you can see that there’s some pretty dark stuff happening to some good people. It doesn’t take too many times encountering something like that for it to really change someone.
“Ive been blessed to have some of those opportunities put in front of me to really change my view of what being a good person means; what being a good father and a good example and role model means going forward. You really see how people are hurting and it’s because of a system that maybe no one’s intentionally trying to be malicious about, but until you’ve really had that first-person experience seeing people hurting from it right in front of you, it’s tough to kind of take steps.”
It would be a surprise if the league handed down any sort of punishment. The optics alone would add to the public relations damage that the original ban created. Even so, Dermott reiterated his desire to bring the entire franchise into the fold before he takes similar actions in the future, but he also made it clear that he will not be silenced on the topic.
“It’s not like I’m shutting up and going away,” he said. “I know more questions are going to be coming. We’re just going to be as prepared as we can be to just spread love. That’s the thing. It’s gay pride that we’re talking about, but it could be men’s health. It could be any war. It’s just wanting world peace. Everyone’s got to love each other a little bit more.
“Like my parents said growing up, ‘How awesome would it be to be the guy that people look up to?’ That’s what really hit home when I was a kid, especially from my mom. You want to grow up and be that guy. You want to be the guy that’s having the impact on kids like NHL players had on you. If they had been racist or bigoted, that’s going to have an effect on you.
“With how many eyes are on us, especially with the young kids coming up in the new generation, you want to put as much positive love into their brain as you can. You want them to see that it’s not just being taught or coming from maybe their parents at home. They need to see it in the public eye for it to really make an effect.”

My mam said we have to clean the house today (told us yesterday) and that we would start at 12. She immediately proceeded to go out at 12 and said we’d clean the moment we got back. She gets back and now there’s lunch to be made. By the time we get started we’re nearly 2 hours late and the energy and allocated time I had for all my tasks is gone. I will get none of the art I need to get done done today.
#I wanna smash my head into a wall#if one more person talks to me about a task that needs to get done I’m going to smash all the gifts under the tree for fucks sake#I’ve needed to get this art done for weeks (Christmas presents plus relevant for my portfolio) and every weekend when I’m supposed to have#time someone comes up to me saying ‘hey I need you to do this. now.’ and throw a fit when I say I’m busy.#this also ties into the fact that I’m in full time education but everyone was pushing me to do art as a career (I don’t want to but I can#still take it up as a side thing which is what I’m trying to do) and then everyone gets upset at me when I prioritise art for my spare time.#there are 4 people living in this house. 2 I’m full time education (1 with exams and the other (me) preparing for college and a future)#1 is our parent who is working and looking after us to the best of her ability#and the other is my lazy ass brother who works maybe once a week if we’re lucky and refuses to keep a job. he just sits in his room playing#on his computer all fucking day. he’s filling out papers for the dole right now because he needs money and refuses to work

Why Dragon Age Veilguard isn't a "Cathedral"
Concept art by Matt Rhodes
"To disinherit the storylines of past games goes directly against the notion of building cathedrals."
What is inherent with Veilguard that keeps bothering me is the fact that the world's choices truly didn't matter--and it doesn't simply bother me from a player perspective, it's not simply a grievance borne of frustration to what I (as a longtime fan) have lost. It's about the very culture of the arts under capitalism's new media habituation cycle [x][x].
Yes, I spent hours of my life playing and replaying each instalment of Dragon Age. Yes, I painstakingly curated a 'canon' world state by replaying what came before in preparation for Veilguard. Yes, I am even more unsatisfied with the end product--time hasn't helped, it's just widened the divide. But, and I can't stress this enough, these very personal gripes aren't what hit home the most. It's the inherent disregard of legacy. A legacy that the previous writers and game developers were building towards.
In the DAV artbook, "cathedral" is the word used to describe the process of making a game. Matt Rhodes' exact words are: "One artist can make a painting, but it takes a team to build a cathedral." Cathedrals took centuries to build. The architect who drafted the first blueprints would likely never see his work realised, he had to rely on those who came after him, like-minded and passionate, to see it through--for the culture, for the future, for legacy. Painters took on several apprentices for this reason too--giant frescoes were not completed by one man's hand, even if it is one man's name that immortalises them. Similarly, if you weave a narrative around choice, what good does it do to take it away at the final act if not to fall to caricature?
To disinherit the storylines of past games goes directly against the notion of building cathedrals.
Late-stage capitalism and profit-margin-obsessed game producers forcing developers to churn out meager content, to make a known brand into something it's not, to chase a fad or a popular trend... o, how reductive and cliche you've been forced to become Bioware. We have lost the cultural thought patterns relative to Cathedrals. We know only of barn-raised churches--done in a day but unlikely to last the turn of the seasons.
And don't even get me started on the music of Veilguard either. From Origins to World of Warcraft to Everquest to Baldur's Gate to Dungeon Siege, you can hear the intricate interconnected weave of sounds inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons-esque fantasy genre. You hear it in the repeated use of certain instruments, in the harmonic weeping notes of a bard-like singer or the foreboding echoes of drums as if of war. In tavern songs. But then, rather than hire someone who loves these worlds and this genre, who is a hungry artist looking to make a name, a legacy if you will, for themselves with a spectacular score, you hire any already sated composer, one well-into the encroaching years of career fatigue, whose notes repeat in countless projects, who feels less concise and more uninterested with each new project. One who has long since cemented his legacy. Someone in it for a paycheck and nothing else! And, to top it off, you let him compose something so minimalist? I am offended actually.
Cathedrals! We should have witnessed the final tile being placed on the Dragon Age cathedral. Instead, some architects walked up, tore down the interior and installed IKEA furniture and called it authentic before having to call the previous architects to come and fix the "load-bearing issues", forcing them to rush and add a coat of varnish and a few 'aged' details for authenticity.
#dragon age veilguard#veilguard#dragon age#bioware#veilguard critical#da:tv#dragon age the veilguard#matt rhodes#veilguard concept art#dragon age artbook#a cathedral in ruin#i am being dramatic and in my feels but also it's not about me--it's about the literal disney-ification/corporatisation of media now#this post is also anti hans zimmer hype#like... that man has been phoning it in for a while now#pack it up#let new talent come in#stop gatekeeping the arts by flooding the mainstream with the same composers/actors/writers#media studies#as a solasmancer i got my happy ending#as a dragon age player?#yeah... no.#i couldn't sleep until this was exorcised from my brain
