I think we should normalize not knowing how to do things. Not like, willful ignorance, but accept (and make normal) the idea that there's a lot of things people don't know how to do because they were never taught, and that it doesn't mean the person's failed as a person.
Was at a library with a highschooler and I asked if the kid could look in a relevant section for a specific author, and in response I got a deer-in-headlights look. Turns out the strategy up until then had been looking at every single title to see if it matched, and the idea that alphabetization existed in the real world instead of just a classroom activity hadn't ever been introduced as a concept (my guess is that the teacher probably just thought it was implied or something, idk doesn't matter). Thing is though, remedying that was literally as simple as going "it's fine. you just find the author's last name on the spine, and if you go left, you get earlier in the alphabet, and if you go right, you get later in the alphabet, when you get to the end of a shelf, go down to the next level, and when you get to the bottom of the shelf, go to the top of the next one." that was it. kid was able to practice the skill, there wasn't any shaming involved, and hopefully it means that it'll be easier to ask for help in the future.
Shaming or making fun of a knowledge gap doesn't motivate people to fill them in on their own, it just motivates them to hide if they don't know something which actively prevents the acquisition of knowledge

Early Childhood - Eye Dropper
Look at that focus! The exercises in the Practical Life area reflect Dr. Montessori’s concept of “an education for life,” as children develop the practical skills necessary to gain mastery over their actions and learn to use the common objects of daily life. By engaging in purposeful activities with everyday objects, children develop real abilities, which give them independence and control of their lives.
By engaging in these activities, children learn to focus their attention for the entirety of an activity and upon completion, have a deep sense of fulfilment. Therefore, the aim of these activities is not only practical but also developmental. Through these activities, children develop concentration, independence, coordination of movement, inner discipline, and independence.

Just before covid hit my brother and I at 15 and 19 found our selfs homeless. I had a choice, my brother would go into care or we could stay together, but only if I took responsibility for him and had somewhere to live. So I applyed for social housing, the guy that processed my case was sympathetic and at some points I was holding it together better than him, do you have any other family? No, Do you know where your mother is? I wish I did, how old is your brother? 15 are you in any fulltime education? Not anymore. He looked at me like I was something tragic and I suppose I was, there isn't a metaphor for what I looked like that works any better than just what his naked eyes saw; a girl abandoned by her mother, her life in a bag on her back completely thrown on how to deal with everything, and all he could do was fill out a form and send it and me off. it's going to be okay.
Somehow despite the odds we where given emergency accommodation and a year later a property to rent, I suspect we where pushed up the list because of my brothers age, we where lucky, some people wait years in hotels or streets all over the country, living out of suitcases and rucksacks.
As lucky as we where, luck didn't cover all the things I suddenly had to know. I had no idea how bills worked or paying my taxes, I didn't even really understand what "taxes" meant until the final notices where piling up in front of us. It's something they don't teach you in school or at least mine didn't. They never taught us how to survive in a world like this, they assume our parents would be there to explain or we'd be much older before it mattered. what's more useful in real life, how to formally address someone in an email or how to keep the lights on or how to find food when a tin of beans is too expensive.
Though I suppose the email ettique lesson was useful for something in the end,
To whomever it may concern, I'm writing to you regarding my payment plans and how I'm choosing to fork over alot of money and won't be buying enough food to live off this month. My regards.

also what is this website’s fixation on who did or didn’t get a good grade in english class in high school. I topped my school in english when I was 17 and that’s somehow supposed to mean that (as an adult) all my literary analysis is going to be perfect? bitch I don’t think that’s how anything works
“sounds like someone didn’t pay attention in english class” sounds like someone thinks high school is the end of your knowledge development and that nobody is capable of growing beyond that. sounds like someone assumes that these skills will just stay set in stone regardless of how much or little someone chooses to use them in their adult life. come on

"why couldn't shuro have just been honest about what he felt with laios and falin it's not that hard" are you. are you White
#dungeon meshi#shuro#toshiro nakamoto#look you can hate him for other things but this is very clearly a case of cultures (& personalities influenced by these cultures) clashing#shuro is japanese/east asian-coded and laios is european white boy#i am not japanese but i also come from a collectivistic society#pakikisama is a filipino value both prized and abhorred#it relies heavily on being able to read social cues and prior knowledge of societal norms#shuro being from a different country/culture is important to his character#his repressed nature is meant to contrast with laios' open one like that's the point#they both had similar upbringings but different coping mechanisms#shuro explicitly admits that he's jealous of laios being able to live life sincerely#anyway the point is they were operating on different expectations entirely and neither had healthy enough communication skills#to hash things out before they got too bad#re his attraction to falin i personally believe he unfortunately mpdg-ed her#she represented something new & different. a fresh drink of water for his parched repressed self#alas not meant to be#i'll be honest the way ryoko kui handles both fantasy & regular racism in dm is more miss than hit for me#i don't doubt that a lot of the shuro hate is based off of marcille's pov of him#marcille famously racist 😭#characters' racist views don't often get (too) challenged#practically everyone is casually racist at some point#anyway. again if you're gonna hate shuro at least hate him for being complicit in human trafficking & slavery#he couldn't help falling for the wrong woman goddamn 😭#calemonsito notes#edit: upon further reflection i take back what i said about toshiro mpdg-ing falin!#i'm sorry toshiro 😭

The Little House books are actually great inspiration for worldbuilding, because their working class perspective reminds you to think about all the work that goes into getting the resources needed for daily life.
Where does the food come from? Who cooks it? Where does the fabric for clothes come from? Who spins it, weaves it, sews it? What do you use for heat? Light? Transportation? Can you get these resources yourself from the local landscape or do you buy them from somewhere else? What happens if something breaks or runs out?
Not all those details are needed for every story, but these books show how useful it can be to consider those details. And remind you that, if you tell it well enough, sometimes those details can be the story.

catch me looking up nightingale symbolisms for tales of the passerine. if danny's using the name of a songbird for a hero name, regardless of familial connections, i will utilize the symbolism tied to the bird. Anyways general gist of the nightingale symbolism i've seen, other than what wikipedia told me, is that nightingales were frequently symbolisms of spring renewal, loss/death, love, etc. catch me about to incorporate music into Danny's character
#dpxdc#danny fenton is not the ghost king#tales of the passerine au#musician danny ftw. as someone who loves music i am more than happy to make this boy a frequent singer. this au is still baby#i can squeeze singer/musician danny in pr easily.#some favorite lines i saw while looking for symbolisms is that nightingales in roman culture were associated with venus and were also said#to provide comfort in the hours of darkness. eh eh? i saw a summary that in chinese folklore they were seen as symbols of hope#it didn't specify which dynasty but it did say it was a famous tale. cite also mentioned that in John Keats' “Ode to a Nightingale”#the bird’s enchanting song transports the poet to a world of transcendent beauty providing a temporary escape from the suffering and imperm#anyways looks like nightingales in gist symbolize comfort in dark times among other things#while robins in gist symbolize renewal. celebration of life. good luck. rebirth.#nightingale's color scheme in my mind is very much a dark purple-blue and black. maybe some gray too.#he'll probably try and ditch the black and white just out of paranoia. argh i need to come up with a suit design nooooo. superhero suit#design is my weakkkest design skill. have to balance between practical and a unique silhouette thats in line with their character.#esp since danny's not using his ghost half to be nightingale -- way too risky. also not using his powers/using them very little.#maybe i can work in an ocarina batman reference lmaoo. i can lean into comic/cartoon realism and have fun with that. as a treat
