#Powers and Principalities

As background to this, I'm currently planning an urban fantasy short story anthology called Powers and Principalities, with the central theme being the close link between evil spirits and earthly systems of oppression and injustice; I'll tell you more about it if you're interested.

The specific reason I'm telling you this is that one of the stories, "Not in Those Sordid Dens", has a premise I think you'd like: the protagonist is a serial killer who's hoping to win the favour of demons by committing brutal murders, who finally conjures them up after a particularly violent one, and when one of the demons arrives, it expresses its disappointment in him - if he really wanted their approval, he should have become a politician or a CEO, and that way he could hurt far more people far more efficiently, and do it with a quiet conscience and social acceptance (maybe even approval). They hence punish him for his failure by having him live in a dilapidated estate on welfare, experiencing the mundane evil of governmental apathy and incompetence.

As for “Not in Those Sordid Dens,” I love how bold and inflammatory the concept is, because you would think that a violent serial killer is more evil than something as common and allowed as CEOs and politicians, but the scale of evil at the hands of those with institutional power outweighs what a serial killer can do with his own hands. It cuts right through and makes you see that the ostensible degrees of separation in responsibility that a politician or CEO would hide behind are illusory. Expanding on the disappointment of the demons, especially the point about social acceptance: being a serial killer is much more likely to get you caught as well, which would put an end to your service.

Also the punishment is hilarious and is the perfect way to end it and sell the point.

Honestly Ozai’s treatment of zuko and Azula was probably less about who they were and more about him projecting what he wishes his father would have done for him with Iroh.
