Hi, I wanted to ask about kpop in general. I have come across comments of people saying they miss the old kpop and that now kpop is becoming too westernized and hollywood. Like kpop is losing it's Identity somehow. What are your thoughts on this?, Will kpop lose it's idenitity?
There's always going to be something else that comes along that replaces the current pop trend in music/entertainment. Like in the 90s to early 2000s people were really into NSYNC or like Backstreet Boys. Then One Direction came out. Mixed with this was some jpop trend too etc.
Things will come and then go, just like kpop. Kpop won't be forever this popular. I still don't sense kpop is that widely accepted among Western countries; there's still some racism or the need to keep to music from your own country you know? Western countries aren't going to be so inclined to let others take away their business you know?
Kpop has always tried to spread more to USA, starting way back with like SNSD/DBSK or even earlier probably. Things didn't really boom until social media was born and then booming more and some idols were able to communicate more in English (that 1 language that most people know/forced to study). BTS just happened to come along around that time. Part of it honestly is luck because many kpop idols work hard too. Right circumstances. Right people. A fresh feeling. Had they debuted earlier like in 2005 or something I highly doubt they'd be this popular. This is why it's very, very difficult to replicate or have a formula for this.
Does adding English words to a song make something less Kpop or does having foreign producers/people working on a song make something less Kpop? When an idol sings a completely English song does that make that less Kpop? How do you define Kpop - Koreans singing pop songs or ??? Does adding a non Korean in the group make it less Kpop ? I think these sort of questions will forever be a debate and there's no clear answer. However, our expectations from the past for Kpop groups have been that there are members in a group (usually just 1 gender - rarely coed), they all must dance in some way or attempt to, they all must either sing or rap, most of the songs are in Korean and sometimes there are some English words sprinkled here and there, the MVs are filmed well (sometimes with a storyline), the members have "set" personalities, and there's fan service.
I don't think it's really about Kpop losing its identity. It's more like people/fans are tired of similar things being pumped out like a lot of people thinks it's a formula and a lot of people are aiming for the Western markets or recognition from the West. There's also an element of politics at play, business, etc. Kpop/K-entertainment is South Korea's soft power so it's important for the gov to also maintain that likeability that people have for Kpop/K-entertainment. South Korea compared to other countries doesn't have much arable land or natural resources. They have to rely on other things like ship building, tourism (tied to Kpop/K-entertainment), electronics, etc to maintain their economy.
