Hi! Do you have any tips on listening to new/unfamiliar music? I'm often scared away by the sheer number or length of available pieces, for example Schubert's piano sonatas or Mahler's symphonies. There's just so much I don't even know what to do or where to start.
Sure thing, I know how you feel because when I got into classical it started with things that were maybe 2-5 minutes long, then I slowly branched out more to things that are 30 or 45 min, and more.
I would say, start with looking through the works by a composer you like, and don’t feel pressured to like everything at first or to listen to everything. There is a lot of music out there, so let your tastes naturally guide you in different directions.
For me, it started with really cool virtuosic piano music in the 19th century, with Chopin and Liszt. That then branched out to Rachmaninoff. Then I moved backward toward Beethoven, and then Bach. Over time my tastes evolved and changed.
The easiest way to start is to get a grasp on the general styles of the different eras in music so you have some background to know what to expect. Here are a few short pieces from different eras that I’d recommend:
Early Music
Medieval (around 1150 - 1400)
Hildegard von Bingen - O Rubor Sanguinis
Leonin - Alleluia (?)
Perotin - Beata Viscera
Renaissance (around 1400-1600)
Josquin des Prez - Ave Maria
Giovanni Palestrina - O magnum mysterium
Guillaume Dufay - Ave Maria Stella
Common Practice Music
Baroque (around 1600 - 1750, but I like late Baroque more)
Antonio Vivaldi - Concerto for 4 violins in D Major
J.S. Bach - Fugue in G Major “Gigue”
George Handel - Sarabande from Harpsichord Suite no.4 in d minor
Classical (around 1750-1830ish)
Joseph Haydn - Symphony no.22 “Philosopher”, mov.1
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Final Chorus from the Abduction from the Seraglio
Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Sonata no.24 in F# Major
Romantic (around 1800-1900, lots of overlap)
Frederic Chopin - Etude op.25 no.12, sometimes nicknamed “Ocean”
Bedrich Smetana - Die Moldau / Vlatava, from “My Homeland”
Giuseppe Verdi - Dies Irae from the Requiem
ok this is where we get into weirder territory, because so many different styles were cropping up around this time it’s really hard to label them,
Late 19th Century / Early 20th Century (around 1870s - 1950)
Claude Debussy - Prelude “The Sunken Cathedral”
Igor Stravinsky - Suite no.1 for Small Orchestra
Arnold Schoenberg - Three Piano Pieces
Francis Poulenc - Trio, for oboe, bassoon, and piano
Erik Satie - Gnossienne no.1
1950 to Today
Arvo Part - Spiegel im spiegel
Steve Reich - Octet
Witold Lutoslawski - Paganini Variations
I’m sorry this ended up being a LOT more than I thought it would be when I started, but the point isn’t to have you listen to everything, rather take a gander at what interests you most and then you can use that as a starting point. And of course, feel free to message me again if you want more ‘focused’ recommendations!

hey there! i just saw your classical music post & i noticed that you pay special attention to gay composers, so i wondered if you were a fan of poulenc. :) i played his oboe sonata a couple of years ago and just fell in love! from what i read in your post, i think you would really like him if you don’t already know him, he did very neoclassical-style music towards the beginning of his carrer but went to a more chant-inspired style at the end. i’d love to chat with you abt it!
Was Poulenc gay?? I don’t think I knew that actually.... I’ve always just thought of him as French and left it at that. I’m not as familiar with his work besides the highlights but I do love a good oboe piece! Feel free to DM me if you’d like

Performances During the Pandemic, September 2020
Seeing music performed still was a problem I wanted to solve immediately as we went into lockdown. I’ve been successful on many levels and continue to write these notes on FB and Tumblr under the heading “Couch Tour” usually for live performances, certainly that I pay for. Those are mostly jazz as I have watched performances from Small’s, Smoke, the Village Vanguard, and The Jazz Gallery with the Blue Note on my radar. There’s some trad/blues/roots music, including Larkin Poe (today) and Jorma Kaukonen’s Quarantine Concerts.
There’s plenty of music on You Tube and that archive has been a key source for “classical music.” But, once again, may we please call it “European Tradition Art Music”? Besides following my nose, chamber music (with pretty tried and true composer choices but my own instrumental choices--cellos, pianos, winds, absolutely no vocals), I have appreciated curation from the 92nd Street Y, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and especially Wigmore Hall and BBC 3.
Wigmore is in the middle of a month of lunch time concerts (about 7 am in the midwest US) and evening recital (midafternoon) that, while I don’t see in real time are wonderful suggestions. For these and most of the performances I curate here, I usually post a link to what I saw and write a little comment on FB. Those are ephemeral (and these notes are only slightly less), but writing about music both helps me listen better and helps me keep honing the craft for fluidity and amusement. As fleeting and in the moment, I nonetheless get feed back on suggestions for further tangents to explore from the real musicians who welcome me into their world. Like the many worlds I join as an engaged amateur, I am grateful for those welcomes. I don’t have imposter syndrome (but probably should) instead taking as a motto, “if you’re there and engaged, then you belong.”
So, this month, I discovered the horn via first the transcendent Mozart Wind Quintet which passed the Boolean search in my head for having piano, double reeds, and clarinet. Now I’m on the look out for horn as it doesn’t have to galumph after the foxes and indeed has a rich lower middle range tone that really really appeals. So there’s also a Beethoven Wind Quintet and a Brahms Horn Trio that were great to hear in this context and to be prepared to return to. I have long been a fan of the Poulenc trio (bassoon, oboe, piano), but hadn’t progressed to the Sextet which seemed too busy to track at first. But with Mozart as a guide, I have all of these wonderful pieces to explore, return to, and savor.
I got into chamber music via the piano trio, so cellos and pianos are always appealing. The Lenore Trio did Beethoven #1 and Brahms #3 which again broadened my palette beyond Beethoven Archduke and Ghost and Brahms #2. Their cellist Gemma Rosefield was well mic’ed and had lush tone, plus she’s the cellist, so I liked her contribution especially. It was more than okay to also have cello/piano duos . Alban Gerhardt and Marcus Becker played Schumann (D minor which also has a horn arrangement) and Beethoven (in D major with a notableb3rd movement Fugue) sonatas from Wigmore. Pretty hard on their heels (not sure it was Wigmore’s programming or my selection) was Philip Higham and Susan Tomes playing Beethoven (some variations on a Magic Flute aria and the C major sonata).
Piano recitals are of course easiest and wonderful. I have seen Angela Hewitt wrap up her Bach Odyssey at Wigmore Hall with both #11 and #12 (some of that in real time but oddly less satisfying than just being able to sit down on my own terms). But I ended up stretching out The Art of the Fugue over three listenings. I did the same with Igor Levit’s assay of three Beethoven Sonatas (with Fred Hersch’s Trees as an encore!!). To be able to see Hewitt and Levit are refreshing glasses of lemonade from the pandemic’s lemons.
I also watched some Tommy Flanagan solo from the 1981 Montreux Jazz Festival which came at a time when I really needed piano. Not in real time but quite new was a chance to hear Holly Bowling play Grateful Dead/Phish tunes in a continuous suite performed at sunrise on the Utah Salt Flats as part of her Wilderness Sessions. I’ll return to those too. As I think about what makes Liszt’s transcriptions of Beethoven’s symphonies or Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes symphonic, it was equally worth probing how Bowling captures those bands on one instrument (include Drums/Space).
I just listened to Danny Driver do the Schumann at Wigmore which prompts this musing.
The piano is such a common thread and I do savor it. While watching a stream limits us to the camera and directing choices, they do vary and lots of chances to really see how musicians work their magic and/or their expressive “guitar faces.”
This is a lifeline in this period and being able to write about it too makes me happy.

University Challenge 2017/18: Episode 20 Review
UCL: 165
Edinburgh: 170
DAMMIT! A to-the-death not involving Oxbridge, meaning one of these lovely teams had to face the shark pit of horror.
Team Vibe: UCL: Hanging round the stage door of the Hammersmith Odeon after Depeche Mode in 1984.
Edinburgh: Sinking some beers at the Edinburgh Fringe but ALSO testing each other on English kings and getting them all right even though completely plastered.
Grandad Count: ZERO. Eight whippersnappers.
Girl Count: Stone, making it count, because she was BADASS.
Style News: UCL! A disappointing palate of blue-grey and grey-blue, with some additional black. GRR. That said, Dowell really does go for the racy unbuttoned shirt look, doesn’t he?
It’s over to Edinburgh to save the day, as even though Heaton-Armstrong’s shirt is another denim number, the top button is stylishly done up and there are ‘90s style Aztec embellishments on the front! I take what I can get here, mate.
Cult Hero Of The Episode: They were all brilliant, really. How lovely to have two teams of equally majestic clever clogs! UCL’s Raii was getting quite excitable towards the end. Dowell, dear Dowell, was the man they turned to for many a music question (and he got Dolly Parton, swoooon). Edinburgh were all fantastic. But it must go to their right-hand girl, Stone, for being excellent throughout and single-handedly winning the Scots the game by saying ‘Lichtenstein’ before sweeping her iridescent hair once more casually over her shoulder.
Handsome Person of the Episode: LOADS. I mean, if you squinted a bit, Heaton-Armstrong basically looked like a more hipster Tom Hiddlestone. I shivered when he said 'nutmeg' and 'dazzle.' Philippa ‘Stone Cold Fox’ is a goddess, with skin as clear as an Irish mountain stream and one of those glossy manes you see being compared to a meadow on Timotei adverts. I must acknowledge the splendiferous beard of UCL’s Raii. I would very much like to take UCL’s Captain Gray home for, er, tea (Andy won’t mind). But:
UCL’s Dowell is the Captain of my Heart, the tricuspid valve (I learnt something today, you know) working at full pelt. Today’s look was very star-of-1980s-film-adaptation-of-EM-Forster-novel. You could get a rivet stuck in those cheekbones! (It’s the shirt. It’s clearly the shirt.)
I am quite inappropriately sad to see UCL go. Haha.
Jezza Watch: He rattled off the first couple of lines of Kipling’s ‘If’ seemingly off by heart and quite, quite irritably, after no one got the question right. But in JEZ PRONUNCIATION-FAIL NEWS:
Horror Round: I was aghast to get all the artist museums wrong. And the Murder on the Orient Express question, seeing as I watched the film three weeks ago (though it was so terrible I snoozed through a large portion and can only really remember the alarming size of Kenneth Branagh's moustache).
Dream Bonus Question Round: See murder ballads, below. I will always, at least, answer a question on Pride and Prejudice correctly.
Regular Classical Fail By Composition PhD-owning Composer, Kerry Andrew: ‘The following bonus questions are also on modern versions of murder ballads,’ said Jez, whilst I dramatically spat out my food. I create modern version of traditional songs, y’all. Like, it’s one of my jobs. I sing a couple of Dolly Parton covers quite regularly, and mention Nick Cave and Kylie in my novel. Huzzah! I didn’t get Rihanna or the Dixie Chicks in time, but, um, anyway -
NO classical fail! Because I, incredibly, know that Poulenc’s flute/oboe/clarinet sonatas come with added piano because I am not a total dunceface.
Kerry and Andy’s Score: A lowly 10. I was significantly saved a third of the way through by Andy arriving back from his KCL Christmas party to successfully shout ‘REDUX!’ and begin hauling the tally in the right direction.
Brain Food: Gnocchi, aubergine, asparagus, pepper, garlic, beetroot.
Farewell, delightful UCL, I coveted both your faces and your brains!
