RIF Trust’s Guide to Portuguese Golden Visa Documentation
Tumblr media
Our Chief Operating Officer, David Regueiro, notes, “The Golden Visa Portugal documents required constitute a lengthy and detailed list.”
“For Third Country Nationals, applying for Portuguese Residency by Investment is no walk in the park. Non-EU citizens need to gather numerous documents.”
“Our experienced team can help you navigate this bureaucratic labyrinth,” our COO continues. “Once you apply for Portuguese residency, you can become eligible for citizenship and a Portuguese passport after 5 years.”
General Golden Visa Portugal Documents Required:
To complete your application for the Portuguese Golden Visa, you must submit the following 10 essential documents:
Valid passport or other travel document
Proof of entry and stay in Portugal, such as entry stamps or visas
Health insurance coverage that is internationally recognized and renewable
Certified criminal records from your home country or any country where you have resided for over a year, issued no later than 3 months before application and translated into Portuguese
Tax identification number
A completed form authorizing Portuguese immigration authorities to obtain a copy of your Portuguese criminal records.
An affidavit committing to the 5-year residency requirement and the relevant investment under the Portuguese Golden Visa.
Evidence of compliance with Portuguese social security and tax departments, issued 45 days before your application
Receipt of payment for the Golden Visa Portugal application processing fee.
Portuguese bank account details, including bank name, address, and IBAN
Investment-Related Documentation
In addition to the general documents listed above, you will need to provide one investment-specific document for your Golden Visa Portugal application. Since real estate investment is no longer valid for this purpose, ensure you have one of the following:
A declaration from a Portuguese credit institution, authorized or registered with the Bank of Portugal, confirming the transfer of the legally required investment amount into Portuguese investment or venture capital funds
A declaration issued by the Cabinet of Strategy, Planning and Cultural Availability, attesting to the investment or support of artistic production, recovery, or maintenance of the national cultural heritage
A commercial incorporation certificate if you are establishing a new business in Portugal
How to Invest in Portuguese Residency in 2024
As our COO advises, preparing the necessary Portugal Golden Visa documents can be overwhelming. RIF Trust can help ease this burden. Contact us today, and we’ll guide you through the process to ensure your Portuguese residency by investment is successful.

Macron's fiery Sorbonne speech targets summering American Millennials
It’s no coincidence that Emmanuel Macron gave a fiery speech about the threats facing Europe the same week that American Millennials in New York, LA, and Miami began talking about booking their one-way flights to the continent. "There is a risk our Europe could die - we are not equipped to face the risks," Macron said, referring to the dietary allergies, alternative milk needs, and tedious conversations of trust-funded, unemployed young adults who will begin their summer in Paris to attend a museum benefit that spills into a large dinner party with several professional photographers before traveling to Puglia, Comporta, or Ibiza where they will subsist on ‘beautiful tomatoes,’ flat whites, and MDMA.
Europe has struggled with illegal immigration for decades, and there is no more pressing illegal immigration threat than American Millennials who have decided that being unemployed in Europe is less distressing for their parents than being unemployed in Williamsburg. Google searches for ‘how long can I stay in EU without passport’ spiked in late-April among Americans who have not yet bought a Portuguese passport from a guy who used to run a turnkey Burning Man camp who is now running a Golden Visa scheme in Lisbon. “Our Europe today is mortal,” Macron said. “It can die and that depends solely on our choices,” the choices being whether or not to search and detain for ketamine at customs and how to clearly define tipping protocol in restaurants.
Tumblr media
“It used to be enough to spend a couple weeks in Italy in July,” observes Coco, a 34-year-old retired gallery founder who is on the board of several art-related non-profits that she instructed her unpaid interns to start. “But now it gets so hot in Europe in July that everyone is going in June and even like, May.” Coco has several weddings and dinner parties in various coastal destinations in Europe in June, but she has not yet RSVP’d nor has she booked any travel. “I know I’m going to go, but I’ve just been too busy to look at the dates or book anything,” she says, absently picking some kind of beige matter from the left eye of her toy goldendoodle. Macron at one point asserts in his speech that Europe is “too slow and lacks ambition,” referring directly to Coco’s ambivalent European travel plans.
Uncertainty permeates the vibe in Europe right now, not because of a military threat posed by a giant, angry country with cocked nukes driven by a weak-minded Cold War relic, but because every Millennial in New York, Miami and Los Angeles has expressed their intention to occupy Europe without declaring the targets.
“Is very stressful,” says Aldo Melpignano, the proprietor of Borgo Egnazia, a trendy boutique hotel in Puglia that for Europeans costs €120 a night and charges 30something Americans visiting from coastal zipcodes $970. “I see the hashtags on the Instagram, like, I’m coming for your @borgoegnazia,” he says. “Va bene, Allison, when you gonna come for us, and are you gonna come with that stupid capello?” says Aldo while making a pinched-fingers emoji with one hand and pointing to his head with the other. Hotel, coffee shop, organic market, and narcotics purveyors all over Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal have echoed this desire for more resolute planning and fewer hats from the demographic that funds the less productive but more desirable EU countries.
"We must produce more, we must produce faster, and we must produce as Europeans," Macron said, a rallying cry to European DJs to sample only vocals that were recorded in native European languages.
“Europe must show that it is never a vassal of the United States and that it also knows how to talk to all the other regions of the world," Macron said, refuting the irrefutable fact that Europe has become a summer camp for unproductive younger Americans and suggesting that they be immediately deported to Bodrum or Izmir upon landing at CDG, MXP, and LIS.
“This is a betrayal of our values that ultimately leads us to dependency on other counties,” Macron said, making an observation about Europe’s frustration with having to work between May and August in order to show American Millennials how to correctly tap their credit card on puzzling European payment terminals.
“Europe must become capable of defending its interests, with its allies by our side whenever they are willing, and alone if necessary,” said Macron, in defense of French baristas who do not like working with oat milk. Taking a hands-on approach to ensuring the EU’s “ability to ensure our security” Macron and his wife will begin their Summer at a wedding in the Aeolian Islands in early June, float around Sicily or Puglia the following week, head to Bonjuk Bay for an appearance of prominent LA-based DJ, RICHE, and then couch-surf in Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera the rest of the summer.

I had read a fic of yours where Batson was Australian, I don't know if you have other requests like this but if you accept, make one with Batson being Brazilian and he likes football, carnival and who likes to listen and dance to music by the great diva Anitta
Okay, that's cool. I never really knew a lot about Brazil, but I love learning more about it. Bruce is really mister worldwide lol.
Summary: (Y/N) is Brazilian.
Warnings: none
Tumblr media
According to Jason, Bruce has become mister Worldwide. Why, I might hear you asking? He, as a playboy, sleeps with a lot of women. One of those women was a Brazilian model and the two had a son together. Bruce took a DNA first because he didn't want to take any type of chances.
It wouldn't be a first time that a woman tried to claim that a kid was his, but wasn't. Turns out, DNA came back telling him that (Y/N) was his son. Thankfully, the woman was very understanding and Bruce sent her money every month and he would visit when he could.
Unfortunately, (Y/N)'s mom passed away when he was a teen and he came to live in the USA with his father and half brothers. It was a little bit weird at first, a new city, a father who is a vigilante, his brothers too, a butler who is their handler so to speak...
Either way, it was weird, but he was happy to be here with his family. That was something that he thought that Americans were lacking sometimes. That feeling of tight nit love and family. His family, including grandmas, grandpas, aunts and much more lived within a walking distance from him.
Okay, that may sound like Americans don't share that same sentiment about family, but (Y/N) didn't really see it. It may that in Brazil that is just amplified by 10 or it could be something else of course. However, his family is tight knit and very loving.
(Y/N) didn't think that he would have that here in America, but hey, he can't really complain can he.
However, there is a single thing he will fight until the day he dies. His fellow Brazilian men and women, his brothers and sisters would agree. Soccer is not football. Football is football, you play with your feet. That's why is so popular.
And that's why Europeans and Latinos went nuts for it. Honestly, (Y/N) watches every game with Brazil's national team, even if Bruce had to pay more for the program. He has the money. He can't let his son suffer, can he?
Also, American Football should be named American Soccer, because the ball is never on the ground. (Y/N) will die by that statement and he will fight everyone he needs to fight with to prove it.
Until his last breath and last drop of blood.
One thing he loves more than anything, alongside the football of course, is the famous Rio de Janeiro carnival. He made Bruce and the rest of the family go every single year with him. Thankfully, he still has his Brazilian passport with him.
And the family has a translator for when they go, because not a lot of people speak English, only in bigger cities and popular tourist sites. It's fun to see (Y/N) speak his native language with so much passion and everyone has decided to learn it to talk to (Y/N).
(Y/N) was proud and nothing but supportive, even though at times they were butchering the language, but it's always the thought that matters. And Portuguese is an easier language to pick up. (Y/N) even had some rewards for them.
Every time they could hold a some what correct conversation when it comes to grammar and vocabulary, they would get a dish from the Brazilian cuisine. It's the famous Feijoada and it's just (Y/N)'s favorite. Everyone loved when (Y/N) made it and it was with his grandma's recipe.
That's what motivated them to learn, because even Damian swore by that dish and he loved it the most. Bruce and the rest loved it, it was different then the rest of the American cuisine. Of course, (Y/N) introduced them to another dishes, but everyone loved the Feijoada.
(Y/N) knew it.
One thing he loves is listening to Anitta. He loves her music and they would often find him dancing while he was cleaning, dusting, vacuuming and other times. It made him happy and Bruce found (Y/N) humming the melody and the lyrics every day.
Everyone soon knew the lyrics to the songs and the melody. And besides, they are all learning Portuguese and it was fun to learn it that way. Dick found her songs great and listened to it during his workouts and Dick loved it.
And one thing that Bruce was proud of was the fact that (Y/N) didn't decided to assimilate. He still has his values and he wasn't afraid to say that he is Brazilian. If he has an interview he is often found correcting people and he is not afraid to say it.
Due to the fact that he is not afraid to say he is from Brazil, people of Brazil have claimed him and whenever he comes, they just shower him with love. He is extremely popular and Bruce knows he shouldn't worry about it, but still.
Bruce worries about his children all of the time, especially when they are in another country, especially on vacation. (Y/N) often told him not to worry and did Bruce listen?
No.
One thing more thing that made Bruce love Brazil more than anything in this world is the fact that they take their hygiene more than some Americans do. (Y/N) said to everyone that during the summer he would take 3 showers per day sometimes.
Damian found that interesting. Brazil is a humid and hot country, considering that it's a tropical country and the heat is often unforgiving.
(Y/N) said that the shower made him slow down and think about relaxing. He often clears his head and feels less stress afterwards. He has explained the shower routine, but still, the family they don't really understand it, but hey, as long (Y/N) is happy.
And one thing that Brazilians love doing that Bruce found nice was the way that they are affectionate. Kisses, hugs and touching. Of course, with consent. (Y/N) understood that not really liked it, but his family loved it.
Damian would often get picked randomly and hugged from behind. Damian would often grumble about it, but he loved it. Bruce loved the hugs and the rest loved the hugs too.
Bruce was just happy that one of them was normal emotionally. (Y/N) was trained in martial arts to protect himself, like everyone, but decided to not be a vigilante. He just couldn't be and Bruce respected it.
(Y/N) was their safety net and nobody would have it any other way.

Illegal immigration has a negative effect on minimum wage. It affects the safety, the culture so while I do think those protesters overreacted I can see why they're angry.
their “protest” was for the death of three girls (alice, elsie, and bebe) caused by a british man. born and raised in the uk. nothing to do with illegal immigration. 99% of immigrants in this country have the right to be here (including one of the victims, alice, who was a portuguese girl) so why are they being attacked? why are mosques being destroyed? (the killer is not even muslim btw.)
also I didn’t even mention illegal immigration on my post?? what about “english people have no right to be racist” prompted you to jump to the defence of these people? even if these immigrants you hate so much came here illegally, NO ONE deserves the right to be racially discriminated against.
“it affects the safety” - again the reason for the “protest” is caused by a british man who happened to be black. he was rumoured to be an immigrant but he was confirmed to be born in wales. WHITE people are ruining the safety of THEIR OWN COUNTRY because of RUMOURS. listen to yourself. how r immigrants the problem when the far right is destroying this place from the inside?
“it affects the culture” - is this a bad thing? multiculturalism has been in the uk for years. like i said before, if the british didn’t want that then why did they take over so many fucking countries? british culture as we know it today is built on diversity and some people can’t accept that apparently.
the way that this is an anonymous ask tells me everything i need to know. if you’re too afraid to share your url then a part of you knows that you’re wrong. respectfully, get the fuck off of my blog. i want to post about nintendo games, i dont want to waste my time educating ignorant people like you that purposefully miss the point.
you lot ALWAYS bring up illegal immigration but when you turn your nose up at a brown person on the street you don’t check their passport. you don’t ask for their birth certificate to see if they were born in the uk. when people like you see people like me, you automatically think we don’t belong here. racists don’t see documents - they don’t even see PEOPLE - they see the difference in colour. and that is the mindset of these protesters. they are not protesting against illegal immigration, they are carrying out racially motivated riots.
this is NOT a politics account and i will delete any other asks referencing my rant. sorry for wanting to feel safe in the country i live in i guess.
tldr: the protesters have no right to be angry or riot because they are using the deaths of three innocent girls as an excuse to be racist. i bet most of them don’t even know their names.

Isabela Dias at Mother Jones:
It didn’t take long for the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania to galvanize right-wing politicians and supporters of former far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil. About a month before the election in 2018, Bolsonaro, then the frontrunner, was stabbed on the campaign trail. While Trump seems to have recovered from the shot in the ear, his Brazilian counterpart had to undergo a colostomy and several abdominal surgeries in the aftermath of the stabbing. The incident with Bolsonaro has lessons for how the attempted assassination of Trump could affect this year’s US election. In Brazil afterward, false theories spread—both on the left and the right—of either a staged attack or a purposeful attempt to kill a dangerous threat to the establishment. Critics softened rheotric. Right-wing actors blamed the media for instigating the attack. And the discussion about Bolsonaro’s anti-democratic politics became notably more complex.
After the Trump news, Brazilians on the right were quick to see the similarities and decried the shooting as part of a systematic persecution against conservatives. On X, Eduardo Bolsonaro, a congressman and the third son of the one-time Brazilian president, shared a photo montage of a bloodied Trump and a pained Bolsonaro. “Trust me: he is already elected,” he wrote in English. “We have experience with a situation like that, we know the enemy—and you too.” Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son, also chimed in, blaming the left: “They tried to kill Trump, they tried to kill Bolsonaro, but the (extreme) right is the one accused of being violent. You may not like Trump or Bolsonaro, but ask yourself: why did they want to kill them?” A debunked video dubbed in Portuguese with a supposed message from Trump to Bolsonaro said, “They tried to do the same thing to me as they did to you.”
When asked about the shooting, Bolsonaro suggested “only conservatives suffer attacks.” Echoing talking points from some US Christian Nationalist groups, Bolsonaro said it was “a miracle from heaven” that Trump “was saved by a matter of a few centimeters,” just like it was a miracle that he survived in 2018. Calling the Republican nominee the “biggest world leader of the moment,” Bolsonaro, who has been barred from running for office until 2030, posted, “See you at the inauguration.” Earlier this year, the police confiscated Bolsonaro’s passport as part of a sweeping search-and-seizure operation linked to an ongoing federal investigation in Brazil—overseen by the Supreme Court—into Bolsonaro and his allies’ alleged coup-like efforts to overturn the results of the 2022 elections. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the attack as a loss for democracy.
[...] The shooting also resurfaced false theories, from both sides of the political spectrum, about the attack against Bolsonaro six years ago. In September 2018, Adélio Bispo, who had previously been a member of a left-wing party, stabbed Bolsonaro in the abdomen. Although police investigations concluded that the perpetrator, who was arrested on the spot, acted alone, Bolsonaro and his supporters insisted that the stabbing had been ordered by someone and tried to blame it on the left. At the time, Bolsonaro called the left “aggressive,” saying they “have tried to eliminate their opponents no matter how.” His supporters have continued to use the stabbing to cultivate an image of Bolsonaro as a “political martyr.” Meanwhile, some on the left raised doubts about the incident, suggesting it had been staged and calling it a “fake stabbing.” After Saturday, André Janones, one of Lula’s allies in Congress, joked about Bolsonaro having “taught” Trump how to fake an attack and questioned the seriousness of the attempted assassination, mentioning the fact that Trump asked for his shoes amidst the chaos. “At least this time they remembered to provide the ‘blood,'” he posted on X. In response, a far-right congressman aligned with Bolsonaro has vowed to send a letter to the US Embassy requesting the cancelation of Janones’ US visa.
The impact of the assassination attempt against Trump on the presidential race remains to be seen. But there could be hints in what happened with Bolsonaro. Some political analysts in Brazil believe that staying away from the public stage during recovery ultimately helped the far-right Brazilian candidate insulate himself from fiercer criticism and potential debate confrontations. A voter intention poll by the Economist from that time shows a rise in support for Bolsonaro and a decline for the opponent Fernando Haddad, from the Worker’s Party, after September.
The attempted assassination of Donald Trump in 2024 in the US and the stabbing of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018 in Brazil have some things in common: they brought increased support for the person in polls (though it is too early to tell in Trump’s case).

Chapter One: Welcome to Rio-Day One
Tumblr media
“Eu espero que você aproveite a sua estadia.” {I hope you enjoy your stay}, the hotel front desk attendant said with a bright smile as she handed you back your passport along with your room key card and a folder.
“Muito obrigado.” {Thank you so much}, you replied returning her smile.
The lobby of the hotel was in full festive swing. Across the way to the left, there was a group of musicians playing instruments which filled the lobby with the sounds of steel drums, something that looked like a tambourine but slightly different, a musical bow looking contraption and a guitar. Altogether it sounded very close to samba music but with a tropical twist. You loved it.
“Your Portuguese is sufficient but I speak English,” the attendant said.
You released a breath. You’d been practicing for the last month and a half in prep for the movie you were going to be filming around the smaller islands and locations but you were nowhere near confident in yourself to proclaim yourself fluent or even conversational.
“Thank goodness. I’m sorry if I’m butchering your beautiful language.”
She giggled then waved you off. “You aren’t, I promise. I’m impressed you even tried. Portuguese is not an easy language to master.”
“Tell me about it. I’m trying though.”
A man in similar garb to what the attendant wore approached you with a warm smile.
“Eu tenho suas malas, por favor, siga-me.” {I have your bags, please follow me}
You glanced back to the attendant knowing when you were out of your depth. She smiled then translated for you. Nodding, you thanked the man and followed him as he wheeled you through the lobby and around the many guests standing around and watching the musical performance. Once in the elevator, you got lost in your phone checking your emails and messages. You’d been getting plenty of emails from your agent the last few weeks as filming for “The Blue Lagoon” drew nearer and nearer.
You’d seen the originals and had always loved them for their simplicity. When you heard they were remaking them you jumped to audition but didn’t hold your breath that you’d be called back or even selected. If history was any indicator you expected the role to go to some tall, slim, little to no melaninated actress who had more star power and more of a stronger backing. You’d been in LA for three years and had done mainly commercials, modeling gigs, and C-level sci-fi movies.
So when you’d gotten the call back you were shocked. Then the second call back stunned you even more. By the time your agent called to give you the news that you’d been chosen you were speechless. The news had come mere days before you were going to make the decision to throw in the towel, leave LA and go back home to figure out your next move.
“Esse caminho por favor. Este é o seu quarto.” {This way please. This is your room}
You understood maybe four words but it was enough for you to follow him as he used your key card to open your room at the end of the hall. You thanked him then walked in first and couldn’t help but gasp.
“My god.”
The view before you was incredible. The lush green of the palm trees framed the picturesque blues and sandy browns of the beach and the Atlantic. From this high up it was enough to leave you in awe.
“Bonito não é?” {Beautiful, isn’t it?}
“Sim, muito muito bonito.” {Yes, very, very beautiful.}
A few moments later, the man handed you back your key card then bowed his head before he left. Walking closer to the nearest window, you opened the sliding door and stepped onto the balcony then took a deep breath. The salt from the ocean mixed with coconuts and the sweet smell of pastries and you sighed.
“Three days and four nights of this. Just what the doctor ordered.”
An hour or so later you found yourself wandering around taking in everything you could. The city was so lively and loud you knew that there had to be tons of pockets of culture and normalcy for you to take in. You’d read an old interview of one of your favorite celebrities where they said they wished they would have soaked up traveling like a local rather than a tourist when they could because getting to know a city for what it really was couldn’t be beaten. That had stuck with you and whenever you traveled you preferred to do the less touristy things.
From the corner of your eye, you spotted a fruit cart and hurried over to order an assortment of the top local fruits. You watched as the cart owner prepared sliced pineapple, guava, papaya, and mango and placed them into a large plastic cup. She then drizzled a mixture over the top then held it out to you. Smiling, you accepted and handed her the money then went on your way. Upon first bite, you realized the drizzle was a mixture of lemon and lime juice and salt. You moaned as the sweet fruit juices washed over your tongue then melded with the tang of the drizzle. You already didn’t want to leave.
Soon, you got lost going from cart to cart looking at crafts, tools, clothes, accessories, fruits, foods, and even masks. You were like a hummingbird flitting all over the place inhaling everything about the city that you could. If one was to judge a country based on its food alone then Brazil was top-notch.
“Garota linda! {Beautiful Girl!}”
The shout was so loud it boomed over the chaos of the street. You glanced in the direction of the voice and found a man in a colorful mesh top and white pants waving you down with one hand while his other hand continued beating against the pad of a drum. You approached the man and watched as the ones with him expertly played their instruments. The sound was beautiful and easily made you feel like you were right where you were—in one of the music capitals of the world.
He smiled and said something else you didn’t understand before he motioned to your lower half.
“I’m sorry I don’t—.”
“He said dance.”
You spun around to find a tall man towering over you by at least a foot. His hair was a neat but messy curled afro that matched his beard and mustache. Hypnotizing amber eyes stared at you with a glint of humor in them. You felt like you’d seen him before but you couldn’t place from where. There was something familiar about him in an unfamiliar way. One thing that could not be missed was his attractiveness.
“Uh—dance?”
“You know how right?”
“Well—I do but--,” you protested.
“But what? You either know how or you don’t.”
“Mova esses quadris!”
You looked back to the man beating the drums then back to the newcomer who’d translated moments before. He was also smiling.
“Move those hips,” he translated.
Without you realizing it, a crowd had formed and they were now clapping trying to motivate you.
“Oh garoto, siga minha liderança, {Oh boy, follow my lead.}” the tall dark and handsome man said before he approached you holding out his hands
“Posso?”
“Huh?”
“May I?”
Slowly, you nodded then he placed one hand at your waist and the other on your back. He then pushed your waist inward while thrusting your back forward.
“You’re too stiff. The first thing to learn in Brazillian dancing is in order to have any rhythm you have to feel the music and always be fluid.”
“Okay.”
“Rotate your hips like you’re hula-hooping.”
“What?”
He smirked, “Trust me.”
“I just met you.”
“Exactly and I’m the one who stepped up so you don’t make a fool out of yourself and have them making fun of you in a language you don't understand.”
He nudged his head to a group of older women who were watching you with nothing but amusement.
“Okay,” you conceeded.
You imagined a hula-hoop around your waist and you began circling your hips. First slowly then you got into the rhyme of the instruments. When your eyes met the man before you he looked impressed.
“Wow. Not some stiff americana tourista I see. You know you have hips. Next are the steps. Follow me.”
You watched his feet as he did a cool two-step that turned into a slightly complicated four-step. He did it again and again and again until you slowly caught on.
“Good. Keep your hips moving letting your legs lead. The dance is important to the music, it tells a story. Think you have it?”
You nodded.
“Let’s see.”
You mimicked everything he did while trying your best to keep your hips in motion to the rapidly changing music. The crowd around you began to cheer and clap and that was when you knew you had it.
“Good. Now faster.”
You tried your best to keep up with him but when his legs moved like he were some sort of otherworldly creature you knew there was no way to keep up. The crowd laughed but applauded you. The amber-eyed man chuckled and joined in applauding you. You smiled and spun around feeling like you’d just put on an award-winning performance. Suddenly, you felt heat by your ear and you probably should have been a little put-off, but you weren't.
“I see there’s hope you just might get some Brazillian into you while you’re here.”
You didn’t know if it was the depth of his voice that elicited the reaction or his wording choice but an intense shiver ripped through you making your stomach drop but not in disappointment. This was something else. When you turned to face him, there was no one. Your eyes scanned the street but the sea of people made it impossible to find him. The only thing in your mind was a question.
Who was that?

Aracy Carvalho was a Brazilian clerk working at her country’s consulate in Hamburg Germany who used her position to save German Jews and find homes for them in Brazil.
Born in 1908 to a German mother and a Brazilian father in Rio Negro, Brazil, Aracy was a bright child with a facility with languages. Besides Portuguese, her native language, she spoke German, English and French. As a young adult, Aracy moved to Sao Paulo. She married a German man with whom she had one child before separating in 1935.
With her multicultural upbringing, sharp mind and friendly personality, Aracy decided to go into the diplomatic field. She was appointed to the Brazilian Consulate in Hamburg, Germany in 1936 and served as Chief of the Passport Section. Two years after her arrival in Germany, a horrific pogrom against Jews took place throughout Germany. November 9, 1938 became known as Kristallnacht, the “night of broken glass.” Much more than glass was broken by the Nazi party’s paramilitary unit, helped by fervent members of the Hitler Youth as well as German civilians. Jewish homes, businesses, schools and hospitals were destroyed with sledgehammers, and 267 synagogues were burned to the ground. Many Jews were brutally murdered, 7000 Jewish businesses were destroyed. 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Jews across the country were thrown into despair and fear, and over the next few days 638 (or more) Jews committed suicide.
During Kristallnacht, Aracy sheltered a Jewish couple, Margarethe Bertel-Levy and her husband, in her small apartment. She then made arrangements for them to leave Germany safely, with most of their possessions. As the situation for Jews in Germany worsened, Aracy hid several other Jews. One of them, Gunther Heilborn, would later name his Brazilian-born daughter Aracy in honor of the brave young woman who saved his life.
Working in the diplomatic field, Aracy’s job required her to be apolitical. Brazil and Germany had a strong trade relationship, swapping Brazilian cotton for German industrial goods, and the president of Brazil, Getulio Dornelles Vargas, a ruthless dictator, did not want his diplomatic corps to do anything to alienate Hitler. Aracy was instructed to “unofficially” prevent desperate Jewish refugees from going to Brazil by giving them visas marked with J, and then denying them approval to travel. This was not acceptable to Aracy, whose moral compass overrode the instructions of her superiors. She quietly refrained from marking Jewish passports with the tell-tale J, instead issuing as many valid visas as she could to Jewish applicants, even those she knew were using forged passports. She also helped them financially so that they had enough money to start a new life once they reached Brazil. Aracy became known among Jews as the “Angel of Hamburg.”
Around this time, João Guimarães Rosa was appointed Brazil’s deputy consul in Hamburg. On his first day on the job he met Aracy and was soon entranced by the beautiful passport official, especially since there was something mysterious about her. Aracy seemed to be hiding something about herself, and as João got to know her and earned her trust, he discovered what it was. Initially he was shocked, but soon came to agree that she was doing the right thing, and developed enormous admiration for the brave young woman, who could get fired or worse for disobeying orders. They were married in 1940.
The political winds often shifted quickly during World War II, and by 1942 Brazil was no longer on the side of Germany and instead joined the Allied Forces. Aracy and João were recalled back to Brazil, where João became one of Brazil’s most celebrated authors who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967.
In 1982, Aracy Carvalho de Guimarães Rosa was honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem. She lived quietly in Brazil until her death in 2011 at the advanced age of 102. “Passport to Freedom,” a miniseries about Aracy’s wartime heroism, aired on Brazilian television in 2021.
For breaking the rules to save innocent lives, we honor Aracy Carvalho de Guimarães Rosa as this week’s Thursday Hero.

The carnival
Cillian Murphy x reader (Brazilian)
Master List
So I got a request that @gypsy-girl-08 kindly tagged me in (thank you for your generosity Liv) 🌷, and to the anon who sent it, I think it’s a good thing I didn’t post this earlier, since it’s very fitting now that you guys celebrated the Carnival in Brasil. You will find the translation to both Portuguese and English respectively between […] in italics 😉🇧🇷 I hope you enjoy it!
Muito obrigado @shelbydelrey for your help!!! 🥰 it wouldn’t be the same without your support! Muitos beijos! xx
Tumblr media
Cillian touched his passport and his wallet, both items inside his backpack, he was always forgetting something somewhere but he was determined to make things right, make it perfect.
Feeling a hand squeeze his arm, he turned to the Brazilian beauty next to him, still not knowing how he got so damn lucky, after a divorce and a battle in court to share the custody of his daughter and a few complicated relationships afterwards he thought he was done in the love department, with his age and the crazy schedules of filming, he simply gave up dating, he was disappointed.
Until one day he was invited to do a radio show, in the small cabin several people were invited, you never knew the program or the topics they would be talking, one day it could be politics or globalization and they could invite a priest, a lawyer or anyone who could bring an interesting conversation to the table, they wanted to focus on having different points of views. So that very same day someone foreigner was invited to talk about the importance and impact of the mind while making a crucial decision in our lives and how sometimes it’s just the fears of being judged what keeps us from following our dreams.
Y/N talked about her own experience when she volunteered for an NGO in Europe and never went back to her hometown in Brasil, she packed her bags and followed her heart. And yes, several people criticized her decision, told her she was out of her mind for ruining her life that way, but back then she felt it was what she needed and she had come a long way, she never stopped to think about the barriers that could have stopped her, like language or the cultural shock, her own family thought it was something temporary, but with the years she proved them, proved herself that this life was all she wanted to have.
Cillian wasn’t just captivated by her physical beauty -she was a fucking gorgeous Amazonian- but by her heart, she devoted her life to help other people, gave up her stability back home because she felt she had done enough in Brasil, she helped people build schools, worked to help women in need, saved natural reserves… she wanted to do it worldwide. He was so grateful he decided to ask her right away if she wanted to have dinner that day, they had the greatest night of their lives. There was a magnet about her that kept him coming back for more, they talked about everything and after several dates, they became official, deciding to take the chance to open up to love once more was the right thing to do, he learned something new every day. And being honest, one of his favorite things was when Y/N got overexcited or mad, she would start speaking in Portuguese, leaving him not understanding anything she said.
“I need you to tell me again how to introduce myself in Portuguese.” Cillian asked nervously.
“Amor da minha vida, you don’t have to worry about that.” [Love of my life.] She smiled gently.
That he totally understood what she meant, since she was always calling him that.
Taking out his cellphone, he decided to type what he wanted to say and let the translator help him.
“Eu não posso acreditar que estamos aqui.” [I can’t believe that we’re here] Y/N sighed linking her hand to Cillian’s as they walked through the airport to the exit.
“Meu amor, you know I don’t understand anything you said.” [My love].
“Oh, before I forget, we don’t live together… my parents are very traditionalist, and you will have to take the guest room.” Y/N stated, her Portuguese accent was more evident now.
Before he could ask why, a loud music and confetti exploded around them.
“I didn’t mention my family is the walking version of the carnival did I?”
There were feathers and people dancing holding signs with Bem-vindo [welcome] written in bright colors, Y/N was pulled by a sea of people who wrapped her in hugs and love, he knew she had eight sisters and one brother and everyone were expecting to see her after along time overseas.
Cillian was moved by the love they were showing her and he saw other people joining the traditional samba dance, completely strangers passing by united by the moves that every single person there knew by heart. Y/N had tried to show him some, but he was a lousy dancer and he didn’t want to embarrass himself.
“Me deixa apresentar meu namorado, Cillian.” Y/N leaned her head on his shoulder and wrapped her hands around his waist. [Let me introduce you to my boyfriend]
Feeling his palm sweat, he smiled at her family. “Plasher e-e conusherlo” He stuttered, shaking his head. “Prazer em conhecê-lo.” He repeated. [It’s nice to meet you.]
“Bem vindo a familiaf.” [Welcome to the family]. A woman that looked just like Y/N walked towards him to greet him in a warm hug. “Você está pronto para o carnaval?” [Are you ready for the carnival?]
Cillian looked at Y/N mortified, he didn’t understand a single thing but the last word.
“She welcomed you into the family and asked if you’re ready for the carnival.”
“Muito obrigado.” He looked at Y/N’s mum, feeling proud of the very few words he knew. “As long as you don’t make me dance.” He chuckled then.
“After a few caipirinhas we all become trilingual.” A man approached them.
“Cill this is my brother Marcus.” He saw Y/N hugging him.
“Why didn’t you let me drink a caipirinha in the flight?” He laughed nervously, but grateful to know that her brother spoke English as well.
After kissing and hugging at least a dozen of people, they drove away from the airport and it was a funny dynamic since it was him or her family waiting for the translation.
The family had decorated the house with colorful flags and balloons, there was a huge table set with all kinds of foods, Y/N named them all for him; feijoada, moqueca de Camarão, empadão, he was particularly fascinated by the brigadeiro.
Tumblr media
After several caipirinhas, he started to speak more fluently, asking whoever was in front of him of how to say something, his cheeks were turning a bit red from the alcohol and he was really enjoying himself that he didn’t even noticed Y/N was gone until Marcus made him a sign and Cillian turned his head to find her with the rest of her sisters in typical carnival customs, a loud cheering in the background as they started to dance samba to the music.
Cillian’s eyes popping almost from his head, his mouth hanging open as the sequins and feathers hugged her body beautifully. Her hips shaking to the rhythm and her face glowing from the happiness.
Everyone from the kids to the adults joined them, and he even ended up dancing with Y/N’s mother.
Once the sun went down and the spirits calmed, Cillian winked at Y/N across the room, joining her soon.
“I’m hoping for a samba private dance later.”
“Maybe if you’re lucky.” Y/N winked as his hands squeezed her hips.
“Te amo muitíssimo.” Cillian declared clearly.
Y/N secured her arms around his neck, it was the first time that he said I love you so much in her mother language.

The world’s been at peace for a year. August of 1946 dawns gently.
“Made a call today,” Bill says casually, as the sun dips, blood red, back into the horizon. Joe had watched it rise this morning, and set the night before. He’ll probably watch it rise again tomorrow.
“Okay.” He says, in address to Bill, who hums.
“Yeah. Down to Rhode Island. Rather big Portuguese immigrant population down there, didja know?”
Joe didn’t. “Sure.”
“Well, I only know that because George Luz picked up the receiver and started speaking in rapid fire Spanish — or whatever the hell they speak down in Portugal.” Joe keeps staring out the window. He starts tapping his fingertips against the armchair of the wheelchair, though.
Bill, taking this as his response, continues on. “Anyways, after sorting out whatever tongues shit he was saying, we got down to business. First, he apologised. See, apparently, he’s got this sister — he’s got nine goddamn siblings, can you believe that? — anyways, he’s got this sister, right?”
“Sure.”
“And his sister, according to him — but paraphrased by me — is a little khaki wacky, ya get it?”
“Naturally.”
“So, long story short, she’s stuck in a goddamn Spain army base and they won’t let her leave again because her passport’s all out of whack, so he’s been trying to sort that out. Shit, maybe he was speaking Spanish, then. Or maybe he thought I was his sister at first? Well, first of all, that’s goddamn insulting, don’t you think?”
“Hm.”
“—Second of all, I don’t think he did, because apparently he’s trying to get in contact with the foreign affairs office down there. Anyways—” Bill waves his hand, as if to erase the story from his train of thought. “I bummed his phone number offa Perconte – I have his address, but I’m too impatient to send a letter.”
“Of course.”
“So he picks up, starts speaking in whatever the hell that was, switches to English, says ah, hey, it’s my favourite VD! and we get down to business, right?”
“Right.”
“Right! So we get down to business, and he explains in the most confusing way possible why his sister’s in Spain, and I’m just tryin’ to figure out what the hell’s going on, and then I say, hey, if you need a break from all that, you should come visit!” Bill pauses, here, as if to let his words sink in.
They sink in just fine, but Joe doesn’t turn away from the window. “Seems logical.” He says.

So, this one time back in 2009 or so I went to the mall with my friends in Belo Horizonte and we wanted to watch a movie. So we bought snacks at the mall and went to the movie theatre and the lady at the box office demanded our ID cards to make sure we were all 14 or older. Fair enough.
"I don't have an ID card," I explained in perfect Portuguese, "I'm a tourist. I moved to Canada when I was 10 and I'm just visiting."
The lady wouldn't believe me.
So we had to go find my mom (who was also at the mall) to come and vouch for me.
Except the lady wouldn't believe her either.
"She's my daughter and she's well over 14, you can't just deny her a ticket for no good reason!"
My mom spent a good 10 minutes arguing with the lady, accusing her of being bigoted because I'm short. (I was actually 18 at the time, but I have a back problem that makes me really short).
The lady said she'd only sell me a ticket if my mom bought herself a ticket too.
A couple days later my friends and I were at the mall again and wanted to watch a movie. The same lady was at the ticket booth. When she asked me for my ID I handed her a copy of my Canadian passport.
She stared at it for a solid 30 seconds before quietly going "You're the one I wouldn't sell a ticket to, aren't you?"

He’s stuck up????
i talked to this girl, the story was like this: she says that ruben arrived at the airport in a bad mood and complained bc there wasn't a line for portuguese and one for foreigners, and at the airport they told him they were sorry but it was full of passengers and they couldn't do anything, apparently when he had to scan his passport the immigration lady was also in a bad mood and said angrily "next" and he told her "calma senhora"
