“De Meyer’s portrait of the socialite, art patron, “shoe queen,” and suffragette Rita de Acosta Lydig is striking in its simplicity of tone and contour. The image, which appeared in Vogue in 1917, resonates with the classical elegance epitomized in the paintings of society portraitists John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini, who also depicted this so-called alabaster lady.”

Quicksilver Brilliance: Adolf de Meyer Photographs

Now open and running through March 18, 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be the first exhibition on Baron Adolf de Meyer (1868–1946) in more than 20 years and the first one organize by the Met. Around 40 works from their collection will be on display. While he took different kinds of photographs, he did portraits of famous people which show you the fashion of the times. You see here designer Count Étienne de Beaumont taken in 1923--he looks like he really likes his clothing, doesn’t he?--and the American socialite Rita de Acosta Lydig in 1917 showing off her latest evening dress it seems.
