hi I’m annemarie and I’m an art historian! not adjuncting for the first time in five years was rly hard for me so I threw some slides together so I could still (sort of) teach the same material as my language of art class but a) I threw these slides together for instagram so space was/is limited and b) language of art is a ten week run through art history so I’m presenting only the most accessible information here – there’s so much more to this art period and to this artist! – please don’t expect it to be comprehensive and please do ask if you have any questions!

I love this 1870s style of a formal dress and I'm always surprised by the skill and creativity of current-day seamstresses who not only recreate dresses worn by portrait subjects but also model the dresses at appropriate events. It makes me wish I could sew!

As much as I'm enjoying re-visiting 19th century fashion after many years, my main interest is still with the art itself and often, the people portrayed therein.

So, who was Jeanne Samary? She was a beautiful, young actress with the Comédie-Française, who caught Renoir's eye. Her ambition was to compete for dramatic roles such as those offered Sarah Bernhardt. These roles were better paying and more prestigious than comedy.

Renoir would eventually paint Jeanne a dozen or so times. Many of those paintings are now masterpieces of Impressionist art.

Description

Renoir presents his family in the garden of their residence in Paris. At center Renoir's wife, Aline Charigot Renoir, wears a colorful hat and blouse. Renoir's oldest son, Pierre, holds his mother's arm while Jean, the artist's second son, toddles in the foreground; Jean is gently supported by Gabrielle Renard, the family's nursemaid and one of Renoir's favorite models. The girl is probably a neighbor or friend. Renoir kept this painting his whole life; Dr. Barnes purchased it from one of the Renoir sons in 1927.
