Portrait of Madeleine (1800) by Marie-Guillemine Benoist

Marie-Guillemine Benoist's training as an artist began in 1781 under Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun. She entered Jacques-Louis David's atelier in 1786.

Madeleine, transported from the island of Guadeloupe to France by the artist's brother-in-law, is believed to have been born a slave in the colony and subsequently freed by the 1794 decree (abolition of slavery in French colonies and the mainland). Her exact status remains unclear. Regardless of whether she came to France as a slave or a servant, her influence on how Benoist portrayed her would have been limited, unlike the women who typically commissioned their portraits.

لوحة مادلين للرسامة ماري غيليمين بينويست أحد أكثر اللوحات إثارة للاهتمام في مجموعة اللوڤر المخصصة لـجاك لوي دافيد وتلامذته، تُصوّرُ اللوحة شابة جالسة من أصحاب البشرة السمراء، برسمها لامرأة ذات بشرة داكنة، إختارت مادلين موضوعاً غير معتاد وإنخرطت في مشاكل سياسية.

تم عرض اللوحة في صالون باريس، الذي كان أكثر المعارض شهرة في تلك الفترة، تُطابِق لوحة مادلين معايير اللوحات الشخصية ومعايير الجمال الكلاسيكية السائدة في عام ١٨٠٠، يبرز الصدر المكشوف تباين البشرة والقماش، في هكذا لوحات، التصوير المُتقن لألوان الجسد أمر جوهري، وفي التقاليد الأوروبية، التي تعود للقرن السادس عشر، كانت بشرة الإثيوبيين (الاسم الذي كان يطلق على الأفارقة) تعتبر صعبة الرسم. لوحة مادلين هذه تُجسد مهاراتها كرسامة.

لا أعلم قصة المرأة الجالسة، في الغالب أنّ صِهر ماري جلب مادلين إلى فرنسا من جزر وادي اللُّبّ، وهو ضابط محاسبة في السفينة وموظف مدني، من المحتمل أنها ولدت عبدة في المستعمرة وتم تحريرها بموجب المرسوم الثوري لعام ١٧٩٤ بإلغاء العبودية، لكن وضعها الفعلي ربما كان غامضًا، سواء تم إحضارها إلى فرنسا كعبدة أو خادمة، فإنها -على عكس النساء الرائعات اللواتي طلبن صورهن- لن يكون لها تأثير يذكر على كيفية تمثيل بينويست لها.

First attempt at gouache painting in TWO years! I'm very rusty with this medium, so the finished work is a lot less precise than with, say, watercolor pencils or digital painting. But you know what ? I am actually in love with this result, and I really hope you'll love it too!

I've always found it fascinating that in That Unwanted Animal, Madeleine sings "can't you hear that scratching/I ask your eyes?" I also love how digital art means I can make new art and scribble writing all over something without losing the original art.
