if escape rooms as team building exercises became popular im not sure if id be more excited or terrified
#if it isnt already anyway.. i can see it happening as a school frosh thing. idk if it would catch on as a workplace thing#i kind of find the concept of being locked in with strangers and working to find a way out weirdly exhilarating though#at least compared to icebreakers cause i dont have to spend 10 minutes racking my brain for something to blurt out abt myself#as a bonus u could like. put people into groups and give prizes to whoever escapes first second third etc. apparently they also do themed#escape rooms.. maybe let people pick a theme? or voluntary sign up? actually this would be really fun for smth like a blind friend date#although if i found out i was locked in a room with an online friend id be too excited to actually escape LOL#ive never done an escape room before so sadly i cant speak from experience. its like up there on things i want to try next to rug tufting#workshop and visiting new art exhibits or conventions. i seriously need to get out more if it wasnt for the horrors <- school and anxiety#i was planning to invite cass to a drop-in art workshop in town but neither of us could go bc typography is making us go thru hell and back#AND THEY HAD A BUTTON MACHINE TOO#im nostalgic bc i miss working in groups and not being awkward abt it or worrying abt schedule conflicts#i realized that i learn best in groups and its a little corny but i like sharing ideas and talking through a problem#in elementary i could just sit down with friends for review and come out of it energized *and* more familiar with the material#and i could technically still do it now. but as adults we're more picky abt who we work with on top of being way more busy outside school#maybe im lonely. im shy and grew up not talking to ppl unless i absolutely have to so its hard to make friends on my own i guess#only thing getting me thru it is telling myself that humans like helping and that my cringe is overblown in my head. but its hard#hence the escape rooms. i have been able to talk to 2(!!) people though!! mostly abt school stuff but im glad to be on friendly terms#i dont really know how to be happy these days cause im constantly scaring myself abt my portfolio and finding places to work#not being ambitious is part of not wanting to put energy into something that wont work out while also not having the passion to do literall#anything else.. i should probably talk to my counsellor ugh#yapping

Unlocking the Secrets to a Successful PhD Application
A PhD program is a life-changing experience that provides access to cutting-edge information, scholarly acclaim, and specialized employment prospects. But getting accepted into a PhD school can be a difficult process. It takes more than just filling out paperwork to get accepted into a PhD program; you also need to carefully position oneself as a talented researcher. A careful strategy can make all the difference, whether you're looking for a PhD admittance near me or aiming for a university overseas.
Knowing How to Apply for a PhD A PhD program application necessitates careful preparation. A PhD application assesses your research potential, academic history, and fit with faculty interests, in contrast to undergraduate admissions, which primarily considers your grades and standardized test scores. Finding a program that aligns with your research objectives is the first step. Investigate university websites first to learn about the research interests of the faculty. If your research idea complements the department's current initiatives, your chances of being accepted rise. It's also critical to take into account elements like program length, available resources, and funding choices.
Key Requirements for PhD Admission
You must fulfill certain conditions in order to get admitted to a respectable PhD program:
Tumblr media
1. Academic Requirements: A master's degree in a related discipline is typically required for most programs. However, if they exhibit substantial research experience, certain universities might accept exceptional applicants with just a bachelor's degree. 2. Statement of Purpose (SOP): A well-written SOP gives you the chance to highlight your academic accomplishments, research interests, and passion. It should succinctly explain your motivation for applying to the program, your accomplishments to date, and your intended contributions to the research community. 3. Research Proposal: A thorough research proposal is required for many programs, particularly those in the sciences. Your research topics, methodology, and the possible impact of your work should all be included in this proposal.
4. Letters of Recommendation: Your application might be greatly strengthened by strong letters from your research supervisors or instructors. Select recommenders who can attest to your research abilities and are aware of your academic prowess. 5. Extra Requirements: Standardized test results (such as the GRE) and evidence of English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS for overseas students) may be required, depending on the university.
Mastering the PhD Application The secret to a successful PhD application lies in preparation and authenticity. Here’s how you can stand out:
Crafting an Impactful SOP: highlight your academic background, the reasons for your research interests, and how the program aligns with your long-term objectives. Mention the faculty members you'd like to collaborate with and give specific reasons for your interest in that university. Creating a Research Proposal: Make sure your proposal is thorough but succinct. Emphasize your methods, theoretical underpinnings, and research aims. Don't forget that admissions committees seek out creative concepts that have practical applications. Getting Letters of Recommendation: Prepare your referees in advance by sending them your SOP, research proposal, and résumé. This will enable them to compose a more effective and individualized letter.
Using Internet Application Portals: Be careful when it comes to deadlines. Rolling admissions are used by most colleges, however it's best to apply early. Check your documents again.
Preparing for PhD Interviews If your application impresses the admissions committee, you may be invited for an interview. This is your chance to demonstrate your passion for research. Here are some tips:
• Be Well Prepared: Examine your study proposal and SOP because interviewers will probably inquire about these. Be ready to talk about your prior work, your goals for the future, and how you might support their program. • Get comfortable with standard interview questions: Questions like "What motivates you to pursue a PhD?" are frequently asked. o "Why did you choose our program?" a "How does your research align with our department’s goals?" • Exhibit Interest and Enthusiasm: Keep in mind that the interview is also your chance to assess the program. Inquire intelligently about possible partnerships, lab space, and money.
Finding PhD Admission Opportunities Near You • Use internet tools and university websites to find PhD acceptance in your area. To locate nearby programs that align with your research interests, use search engines. To find out more about the university's admissions procedure, go to webinars, workshops, and open houses. Networking is an additional effective instrument. To learn more about the experiences of current PhD students, interact with them, go to academic conferences, and get in touch with professors whose work you respect.
Conclusion While getting a PhD is a difficult path, the rewards are extremely great. Your chances of being accepted might be increased by being aware of the PhD admissions procedure and carefully preparing each part of your application. Start early, ask mentors for guidance, and don't give up. Recall that each action you take advances your goal of becoming a scholar who makes a significant contribution to the field of knowledge.
.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

3.What are the main prerequisites for accepting a PhD candidate? The majority of PhD schools demand a master's degree, prior research experience, a thorough research proposal, a solid SOP, and recommendation letters. English proficiency exams (TOEFL/IELTS) and standardized test results (such as the GRE) may also be necessary, depending on the university.

Get comfortable responding to often asked questions, such as "Why do you want to pursue a PhD?" along with "How does your research align with our department’s focus?" Making a good impression will come from demonstrating your passion and in-depth knowledge of your research topic.
7. Before applying for a PhD, is it required to get in touch with the faculty? Getting in touch with faculty members prior to applying can be helpful, however it's not always required. It helps you assess whether they would make a suitable supervisor and demonstrates your sincere interest in their work. But show consideration for their time and concentrate on posing insightful queries about their work. 8. When should I begin getting ready to submit my PhD application? Starting your preparations at least six to twelve months prior to the application date is advised. This allows you enough time to look into schools, write your research proposal and SOP, collect letters of recommendation, and prepare for any tests that may be necessary.

Creative Workshop: Polar Explorer's Sea Chest
What did polar explorers wear on their long voyages into the Arctic and Antarctic regions?
This hands-on craft workshop utilises the medium of paper dolls to explore examples of Victorian and Edwardian fashion — both civilian and seafarer clothing — as well as historical and more modern polar gear. It touches upon the role of drag and cross-dressing within the context of historical polar exploration.
All attendees have a chance to practice their colouring skills with my pre-made paper doll outfits, as well as showcase their creativity and make brand new clothes for the paper doll sailors!
This event has taken place at the National Maritime Museum during the Thames Pride Arts Festival (2023) and the Polar Family Day (2023).
Example workshop pages:
Sir James Clark Ross
Robert Falcon Scott
Sir Ernest Shackleton
Last but not least, I thought I'd add a little bit of context as to "why" paper dolls. While I was brainstorming creative workshop ideas a friend recommended to me "The Paper Doll Club", an episode of the Decoder Ring podcast, and I would heartily recommend giving it a listen. It's all about queerness, growing up gay in the 50s, fashion, nostalgia, and the history of paper dolls. It made me tear up at times — in a good way.
My personal experience with paper dolls is through making them by hand with my cousin and sisters when we were kids, drawing the outfits for the dolls ourselves based on things we've seen in magazines and TV brochures. It allowed us to be very creative and have a great time while spending very little money — or none at all, in fact, since we already had copier paper at home, as well as crayons and pencils for school. My family has been straddling the working class/middle class line (and heavily leaning towards the former) back in the 90s & early 00s, and it was so interesting to hear about people who did the same thing for the same reasons half a century earlier, in the podcast I've mentioned. My youngest sister told me after my first museum event that she used to "steal" the paper dolls from my stash and play with them while I was at school, which only made the things mentioned in the Decoder Ring interview resonate even more. I always get emotional over the realisation that the more things change, the more they stay the same. It's good for the soul.
