Daydreamer | Wheatley x Reader

Warnings: very short drabble, not proof read, not heavily edited, slight angst?? Unreality(???), GN reader, might be a little awkward as I haven’t written anything in foreverrrrrrrrr lol

Wheatleys eyes fluttered open as he stretched and yawned, breathing in the stale air of the underground lab.

He felt a bit dizzy as he brought his hand to his head, tangling his fingers through is dirty blond locks and-

Wait…

Wheatleys eyes widened as he patted the top of his head before bringing his other hand up. He gasped loudly as his gaze trailed down his fingers and onto his shoulder.

He began to feel around his body, everything working as if he had lived this way his whole life, and yet everything feeling foreign at the same time.

He clambered to his knees, crawling over to the nearest reflective surface he could find. He was in shock at his own appearance, unrecognizable to himself. He was no longer just some machine strung together with wires and cogs- he was a real living, breathing human!

He let out a quiet laugh as tears pricked the corners of his eyes, his hands placed on his chest, feeling the rhythm of his heart and his uneven breaths.

He was snapped out of his trance when he heard you jostle slightly, his head quickly snapped around to find you still asleep on the floor. He quickly made his way to you, shaking you awake as fast as he could.

“Wake up! You’re not gonna believe it- it’s a bloody miracle!” He laughed as he continued to shake you.

You groaned, slowly sitting up as he kept his hands firmly on your shoulders. You found it hard to sleep in the facility, Wheatley knew this better than anyone. If he was disturbing your rest it had better be important.

You slowly open your eyes, only to let out a scream as you are greeted by an unfamiliar face.

Wheatleys smile only widens as he watches you try to process what’s going on. You blink a few times, your mouth open as you stutter.

“Wheatley?” Is all you can muster up, your voice a quiet whisper.

“It’s me! It’s really me!” He throws his hands up excitedly, watching as his fingers curl and flex.

“What- what happened to you?” You shake your head, still baffled by your spherical companion suddenly becoming a real man.

“I… I have no idea!” He laughs again, a few more tears welling up in his eyes as he looks back over to you. “This- this is like a dream come true!”

To your surprise he throws his arms around you, pulling you into a tight hug. He buries his face in your neck and you can feel some of his tears spilling onto your skin.

“This is all I’ve ever wanted…” he admits quietly.

Slowly you return his embrace, gently rubbing his back to try and soothe him.

“Really?” You can’t help but let out a small laugh as you hold him.

He suddenly pulls away from you, his hands on your arms as he shakes you excitedly.

“Now when we finally get out of here we can really have a life together!” His cheeks turn bright red as he speaks excitedly. “You won’t have to worry about what you’ll do with me once we escape, we can really be together! We can really start over!”

“What do you mean?” You ask softly, a small frown forming on your lips.

“Let’s face it- things are never going to work out for us if I’m just… me.” He sighs, slowly taking your face in his hands. “But this is perfect! Now everything is going to work out!”

There was a long pause after he said that as he waited for your reply, an uncomfortable silence filled the room. He looked around as you seemed to drift further and further away while still somehow remaining in the same spot.

He tried to call your name but he found himself unable to speak.

The walls seemed to melt and twist as loud ringing echoed through his ears, his vision filled with fog.

The only thing cutting through it was your voice occasionally saying his name. At first it sounded far away, but it slowly grew closer and closer until it was right in his ear.

“Wheatley!” You shouted. He suddenly jolted awake, rolling away slightly before you grabbed hold of him.

He let out a loud gasp as he blinked a few times, desperately looking around the room- dazed and confused.

You laughed softly as you picked him up, turning him to face you.

“That’s funny, I didn’t know robots could sleep.”

“W-what…” he mumbled softly. He tried to look down at his hands but there was nothing there.

“Oh- no!” He cried out, he shut his ‘eye’ tightly, shaking it back and forth.

“Is something wrong?” You ask him, your grip on him loosened upon seeing him in distress.

“Did you have a bad dream?” You tried your best to hide your smile but the idea was a bit funny to you.

“N-No! I…” He paused for a moment, letting out a heavy sigh as he gave up on the idea of arguing or explaining.

“It just felt so real…” he said quietly, his gaze falling to the floor.

You were starting to feel bad for laughing. You sat down and placed him in your lap. Your hand gently traced over the different lines and indents on his metal body, doing your best to soothe him in the best way you knew how.

“Yeah, dreams are weird like that sometimes…” you say quietly. “But… it wasn’t real, so try not to get caught up on it.”

He looked up at you, his large digital pupil blown wide.

“Yeah, I know… I wish it was though...”

“Oh…”

You sat for a moment, trying to think of what you could say to make him feel better. You shook your head, before suddenly rising to your feet.

“Like I said, let’s not dwell on it.” You did your best to smile, despite the awkward atmosphere. “Let’s just focus on getting out of this death trap… we’ll start over, just the two of us!”

Despite being an android he was pretty expressive, you could tell by the way his expression shifted that you had eased his mind a little bit.

“Right. A fresh start…” he laughed softly. His ‘eye’ shutting again as he got comfortable in your arms. Maybe this wasn’t so bad, maybe things really would work out for the two of you.

Maybe he was enough for you, just the way he was. The only way to find out was to get out of here…

Doug Rattmann Headcanons:

-Definitely ace, possibly aro. Basically doesn’t have much interest in other people.

-Looks up to Chell a lot, though easily overestimates her abilities. Idolizes Chell pretty unhealthily.

-Heterochromia and uneven pupils, his blue eye has a pretty gnarly cataract and he’s fairly nearsighted.

-Easily startled by sounds and sudden movements.

-Quickly goes from hopeful to completely hopeless and vice versa.

-Got unfrozen before Chell in Portal 2 and immediately ran off, leading Wheatley to just assume he’s dead.

-Decent at masking his symptoms.

For my AU:

-Struggles to adjust to life outside of Aperture. He often will sleep on a piece of cardboard in the floor rather than his bed.

-Doesn’t draw human subjects anymore. He almost exclusively paints landscapes, sometimes animals but they’re never facing the viewer.

-Still talks with the cube. Mel and Chell don’t ever bring it up.

-Loves Chell dearly but struggles to keep from coming off obsessive. Also tries not to overly rely on her to cheer him up when he’s feeling down.

-Slowly starting to lose vision more and more. His artwork becomes more vibrant as his vision goes since everything appears more dull (cataracts).

-Absolutely cannot stand canned beans anymore. They make him sick.

Chelley fanfics worth a read

Do you have a Blue Sky shaped hole in your heart after finishing the fic? Maybe you're struggling to branch out from the mainstream, most popular fics of these two and want some diversity from multiple writers? This blog post will keep you occupied from feeling that despair once again! I will refrain from advertising my own fics in this and focus solely on fics other than Blue Sky or any branching out from that story line, meaning no All That Never Glittered or How to Tame Your Fear despite how adorable those are! Here's how this is going to work:

Each fic will be hyperlinked and assigned a rating from 1-5 stars. This isn't indicative of any judgement of the writer themselves, just my own bias of how much I was invested in comparison to others. I will also take the time to try and place them in order of most recommended first, but I do in general recommend them all!

I'll assign a few emojis to tag certain things in each fic, like 🟧 to mean incomplete for the time being, I may update this later

I may update this if necessary but I feel like I've read a majority of chelley fanfics there are out there, but if anyone else would recommend something the comments are open for that too!

Okay lets begin:

After Aperture (and it's sequel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Beautifully written and a series of realistic vignettes for a life after the main events. It's an android Wheatley fic, with a sweet relationship/friendship between the two and I can't stress enough how amazing it is.

Sing, Nightingale ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

Yes, it's unfinished. No it's not a waste of time to read just because of that. It's a worthwhile investment of time, is moderate length, and fleshes out human Wheatley's past from before Aperture as well as giving him something to offer Chell, that being singing lessons to bring her voice back.

Lay the Past ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very cute fic, although can feel a little ooc at times. Essentially, Chell finds a battered and badly injured test subject who escaped the facility, and it's going to take him a bit of courage to explain who he is once again.

I Loved You First ⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you need a good (or bad?) cry and hate yourself so much, read this one. It's short but it doesn't need many words to crumble your resolve, and I didn't even cry in any of these other fics I've read. This one got me badly.

Pieces ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very cute but also a bit angsty fic (with a happy ending). It's a human Wheatley one and has some very sweet moments too. Sometimes feels a bit out of character for some of them, but thats often the case in general when exploring fictional characters in new settings.

Previous Lives ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

It spends a lot of it's time hashing out Wheatley's past from before Aperture, and thats pretty much the whole fic but the author writes him so well in these scenes, as well as Chell's gradual process to forgive him. They don't meet in this fic where it ends, but it's very well written.

Science, Science, do as You Will ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is inspired by another work of fiction in it's story, but you don't need to have read it to understand this or love it. My goodness, even though it's quite far removed from the reality of the main game, it's written so well. It's Wheatley having an existential and identity crisis, the novel.

Step by Step ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

I read this a little while ago and saved it to reread at some point because I did thoroughly enjoy it, but I can't say I recall too much from it. What I did really like though was how it fleshes out human Wheatley's discovery of the outside world through small steps while they both get ready to get back on their feet and survive, together this time.

He Never Really Left ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

A short but good read if you're in the mood for some one sided/in denial Chell. I adore how her thought process for android Wheatley is written, it's so amusing. It's got a bit of some dubious consent in one chapter but it's sfw really.

Band-Aid ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's kind of out of character and diverges from the cannon when it gets to GLaDOS, but it's a lovely short read that blends Half Life elements and Portal together, as well as exploring their complicated relationship, raising questions of whether they're in love out of emotional dependence or choice.

Target Aquired ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

This is a long fic to commit to, especially with how it's left off, but if you're into cannon divergence and action/adventure, this fic goes about giving Wheatley a chance to redeem himself rather than float endlessly in space.

Everyday, Since Leaving ⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

A cute one with a moderate length, basically Chell escapes and wakes someone up from stasis to be a little less lonely, but it seems like introductions will be the first thing on their agenda.

Tabula Rasa ⭐⭐⭐

This is definitely a cute fic, and although it does things fairly similar to a lot of other post Aperture fics, it's quite well written and elaborates on their relationship in a very raw and realistic way. I do quite like it, it's just not the first I'd recommend- much like some other fics here.

Come Downstairs and Say Hello ⭐⭐⭐

Now, this one can depend on the person. Myself, I adore the writing of this author, and the action and storyline is quite engaging, although I guess I'm not the biggest fan of the age gap between Wheatley and Chell from before Aperture, although given their extrodinary circumstances of meeting once again, it's as if they never really knew each other anyway, so I guess it's not the worst. They seem to like each other before their back story is revealed, so I think it's still worth a read.

Tell Me ⭐⭐⭐

This is sweet, he tried to hide his identity from Chell after she finds him at the edge of her property. It's got forgiving Chell, human Wheatley, and some fluff throughout.

Not Quite Tangled ⭐⭐⭐

Now this is just adorable to read, it's an AU where they're essentially in the storyline of Tangled, and mirrors the plot of the movie with the Portal characters. A really feel good, on the shorter side kind of read.

The Amazing Alliance of Aperture Science ⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

An interesting post Aperture fic for the direction it takes, although it sometimes feels very tangential to the cannon story. Chell and Wheatley essentially escape, but they aren't ever truly free from that place, even on the outside. This would be higher if it were finished, and it lacks a lot of chelley content, but it's still good!

Testing the Waters ⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

This one was cute, it's fleshing out their lives from before and after the main events and switches from the two each chapter. Unfortunately, it's not done which is a shame!

Timeless ⭐⭐⭐ 🟧

Very cute fic, I'd rank it higher if it had more written, but it's left at a bit of an awkward spot. Essentially, Chell is tasked to go back in time for all of their sakes and stop Wheatley from becoming a robot. She meets an old friend along the way too.

It's not the most thought through list and ranking, it's kind of hard when you're trying to recommend all these really good fics, but this is my own ranking personally!

Imagine: Valentine’s Day with Wheatley

Bet you didn’t expect two uploads in a day! Going back to my roots with our favorite sphere. I really did miss him!

Let’s be so for real… I don’t think Wheatley would remember at first. He’d be wholly oblivious to it until you happen to hint at it or just mention what day it was outright.

Once you do, however, he’s just going to pretend like he knew the whole time. Of course he remembered! He’s a genius after all- he’d never forget a day like that! He was just playing coy. (Liar.)

He’d try to do some classic “roses are red, violets are blue” poems, but he gets kind of distracted talking about how contradictory the poem is. Violets aren’t blue, they’re violet! Really shows how those dumb humans know their flora. Not that you’re dumb! Just Wheatley floundering back and forth between trying to clean up after his fuckups and failing to understand wordplay.

He does do something adorable for you though, directing you to an old break room somewhere deep in the facility that had a vending machine. It had chocolates in it and after some hacking from him (mainly you finding a breaker switch to get the thing running) you get to enjoy some stale yet edible chocolates.

All in all, he really does care deeply for you. All he wants is to impress you and feel like enough for you, and every day he gets to spend with you- even if it’s on the run from GLaDOS- is one he really enjoys.

Post-Aperture Portal AU ramble(cw: alcoholism and depression):

Chell gets weirdly chatty when she drinks. She also gets really stupid and clumsy, so Melody doesn’t like leaving her home alone.

That means sometimes Doug has to go and make sure she doesn’t hurt herself or neglect herself… and gets to hear a lot of her drunken rambles. She talks about Aperture a lot, particularly GLaDOS and Wheatley. Doug doesn’t understand why she’s so sympathetic towards a couple of robots who tried to kill her, but he still listens to what little she has to say.

She still doesn’t talk the same way a fully verbal person can, but she’s gotten better at talking in full sentences over the years. Drinking seems to take the edge off, but most of her time is spent silent. Thankfully Doug’s learned more of her signs and gestures and what they mean. She’s usually not difficult, but can be stubborn if she thinks people aren’t listening to her.

Maybe one day she’ll find the energy to process her time as a test subject, but she’s not there yet. She only barely can bring herself to get out of bed.

And she worries about Doug, too. He struggles to keep a job while also keeping his mind healthy. Sometimes she doesn’t hear from him for weeks at a time. She knows he isn’t well every time he dons his old lab coat. He seems to forget that he’s not working there anymore. His home is usually a mess, like he’s attempting to mimic the hiding places he had in Aperture’s walls. He keeps a journal filled with odd drawings and writing. Chell’s never seen most of it. She’s not sure she wants to, either.

So that was how Glados found herself, on a few evenings during the week and several hours on weekends, elbow deep in potting soil or extracting weeds from pots and beds. She had a system, and it worked flawlessly for years.
