Doug Rattmann Appreciation Day 2025

A new year is upon us, which means another Doug Rattmann Appreciation Day!

Every February 19th, it's a day in which we Portal fans take time to appreciate Doug Rattmann. The man hiding in the walls during the first game, the only member of the Aperture Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System team who had some sense to think "maybe we shouldn't give the computer neurotoxin after we were mean to her", and the man who risked his life to set the events of Portal in motion, and helped ensure Chell survived the long sleep until Portal 2.

So on 2/19, celebrate Doug! Make fan art, write fics! Canon or au, it doesn't matter! Whatever you can think of to give Doug some much-needed love.

I can't lie, I find it very odd that posts cautioning people against donating to individual* campaigns and promoting the idea of supporting mutual aid efforts and community kitchens in Gaza can rack up 10k+ notes--while a post promoting a community kitchen (that I can personally vouch for) struggles to get 1k notes, and has barely pulled in a couple hundred dollars over the past week.

I actively try to avoid using guilting tactics in fundraising, but this is weird to me. It's like people are using these posts as an excuse not to do things they already didn't want to do anyway, rather than actually taking their recommendations on board...

*In my experience, these campaigns often support large extended families + their neighbours

Summary: The golden era of Aperture Science is cut short when a freak accident causes Cave Johnson’s assistant Caroline to be placed in long-term stasis. She wakes up in not just a new decade, but a new location as well – the Black Mesa Research Facility, several hours before the Resonance Cascade. Old rivals and new friends are called upon to act as heroes during humanity's darkest hours. Caroline is no hero, but she just might be right woman Black Mesa needs on their side.

Or we can just call it "Caroline in the events of Half Life 1 and 2 AU."
