Ah, sadness. Final meal of the season, and with this, I have left the boat for the winter. Lady has been hauled out in Port Townsend, her yards and masts pulled, and will be going into phase one of her half-life refit.
Did something fancy for our final meal together, and totally didn't cry. Nope. Not at all. Shut up.
From top going clockwise, we had fresh dinner rolls, mashed potatoes and a mushroom-molasses gravy (we'd recently rewatched Over the Garden Wall and people were clamoring for it), baked lingcod with a garlic-lemon sauce, potato lentil fritters, and baked veg (cauliflower, carrots, and onions (I was trying to use up a lot of stuff we had in the freezer lmao)).
WITH THAT, I am now on my seasonal break from the ship, which means no more posts about the meals I've made for my crew (as if I was super on top of that this season anyways. oops). However, I got my hands on a copy of Lobscouse and Spotted Dog this season, the cookbook companion to the Patrick O'Brien Aubrey-Maturin series. I was planning to play around with some of the recipes in it this winter on my own, and see what all I can bring back to the boat next season. If I do, I will absolutely document my experiments on here!

Today in History - USS Constitution vs. HMS Guerriere 19. August 1812
On 2 August 1812, the USS Constitution (44guns) set sail from Boston and headed east in the hope of finding some British ships. After failing to encounter any British ships, the Constitution sailed along the coast of Nova Scotia, then to Newfoundland and finally stopped off Cape Race in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Here the Americans captured and burned 2 brigs of little value. On 15 August, the Constitution recaptured an American brig from the British sloop HMS Avenger, but the British ship escaped. Captain Issac Hull put a crew on the brig and sailed her back to an American port.
USS Constitution vs HMS Guerriere, by Patrick O'Brien (x)
At 14:00 on 19 August, the crew of the Constitution made out a large sail, which turned out to be the British frigate HMS Guerriere (38guns), led by Captain James Dacres. At 16:30, the two ships began to position themselves and raise their flags. At 17:00, the Guerriere opened fire with her weather guns, with shots hitting the water just ahead of the American ship. They then fired their port broadside, 2 of these shots hitting the American ship, the rest going over and through the rigging. As they prepared to fire again, the Constitution fired her port guns. The two ships were at some distance from each other, and for the next 60 minutes they continued in this manner, with no damage to either ship.
At 18:00 they moved closer together, and by 18:05 the two ships were within pistol range of each other. A furious cannonade began, and at 18:20 the Constitution blew away the Guerriere's mizzenmast. The Constitution came around the Guerriere's bow and fired a heavy barrage that blew away the British frigate's main yard. The Americans approached once more and fired on the Guerriere. The British ship's mizzenmast was now dragging in the water and the two ships came close. The British bow guns damaged the Constitution's great cabin, where a fire even broke out.
It was about here that both crews tried to board the other ship, or at least thought about it. And it was also the place where most of the Constitution's casualties occurred. In fact, both sides suffered heavily from musket fire at this point. On the Guerriere the casualties were much greater. Dacres was shot in the back as he urged his crew to fight. Eventually the ships broke away from each other and then the Guerriere's foremast and mainmast came down, leaving the British ship defenceless.
USS Constitution (44) vs HMS Guerriere (38) in action on the 19th of August, 1812, by Tom Freeman (x)
At 18:30 the Constitution ran down a little and made repairs which took only a few minutes. At 19:00 Hull watched as the Guerriere surrendered, unable to continue the fight.
Guerries's Captain Dacres was escorted aboard the Constitution. Hull refused to accept Dacres' surrender rapier, as he could not accept the rapier of a man who had fought so bravely. He also ordered that Dacres' mother's Bible be returned to him. The Guerriere was clearly sinking, and the wounded were transferred to the Constitution. Hull found that ten impressed Americans had served aboard the Guerriere, but Dacres had allowed them to remain below decks rather than fight their countrymen.
Hull wanted the Guerriere towed in as a prey ship. The Constitution lay with the Guerriere that night, but by daybreak it was clear that the Guerriere could not be salvaged. The prisoners and the American salvage party were taken aboard the Constitution, and at 3 p.m. the Guerriere was set on fire and soon exploded.
Although the Constitution was essentially undamaged and still had two-thirds of its ammunition, the guerrilla's shot became wedged in the frigate's lower masts and the Constitution could not continue her voyage. Hull also wanted to inform the American public of the victory. He reached Boston ten days later, and his message (with the apparent evidence of more than two hundred prisoners of war) provoked cheers. The Guerriere was one of the Royal Navy's most active ships in stopping and searching American merchant ships, and news of her defeat was particularly gratifying to the American seafaring community.
Naval duel between the Constitution and Guerriere. Illustration from Columbus and Columbia (Manufacturers' Book Co, c 1890) (x)
After all the Americans lost 7 men, while the British lost their ship, had 15 killed, 78 wounded 257 captured. This, of course, led to Captain Dacres being court-martialled after his release in a prisoner exchange and his return to Halifax, as was customary in the case of a Royal Navy ship lost for any reason. He put forward as his defence the facts that the Guerriere was originally French-built and therefore not as sturdy as British-built ships, and that the Guerriere was badly decayed and on her way to refit in Halifax at the time, and the fall of the mizzen mast which crippled the Guerriere early in the fight had been due as much to rot as battle damage. There was no suggestion that Dacres and his men had not done their utmost, or that Dacres had been unwise to engage the Constitution. He was therefore honourably acquitted of all blame for the loss.
Dacres continued to serve in the navy after his acquittal, and was promoted to vice-admiral on 20 March 1848. He later died on 4 December 1853.
Hull left Constitution in September 1812, when a death in his family required his attention. He later commanded the Boston, Portsmouth, and Washington navy yards, served on the Board of Naval Commissioners, and commanded the Mediterranean and Pacific Squadrons. He died in Philadelphia on February 13, 1843.

It was the 23rd of July, 1995, and Janet Downing had just pulled into the drive of her Somerville, Massachusetts, home when her son, Ryan, and his best friend and neighbor, 15-year-old Edward O’Brien Jr., rushed to the vehicle to carry the grocery bags inside. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 260 pounds, Edward was described by the locals as a gentle giant. He was a former altar boy that loved sports.
It started out as a typical Sunday. It was a scorching hot summer’s afternoon and Janet had done the grocery shopping and stopped to chat to her neighbor. They spoke of the shock of the recent unsolved murder of 17-year-old Deanna Cremin.
Little did they know that in just several hours, another murder would take place in their city.
Janet decided to take a nap after putting the groceries away. Ryan and Edward had planned on going to the local swimming pool that afternoon. “Why is your mother sleeping?” Edward inquired as he stood staring at Janet. Ryan shrugged and said “Let’s go swimming.” Edward decided against going swimming and the duo went their separate ways.
Some peculiar occurrences had been happening in Janet’s home over the past several months. Items appeared and then disappeared including her favorite Christmas decorations and her daughter’s house keys. Someone put perfume in her coffee, put windshield wiper fluid in her car and left a bag of clothing in her closet.
It wouldn’t be until 10PM later on that night that Ryan came home from swimming and hanging out with his friends. He was met by an unforgettable scene.
At some point between Ryan leaving the house and returning, somebody had entered their family home and brutally murdered his mother. Janet had been slashed and stabbed over 90 times. Blood was spattered all across the room and across the family photographs.
Ryan ran across the street to Edward’s home and told his parents to call the police. Edward O’Brien Sr. ran to the Downing family home after calling the police, assuming that some kind of accident had taken place. He realized straight away that he was in the middle of a gruesome crime scene and that this certainly was no accident.
Who could do such a thing, he wondered? Within days, however, his own son would be charged with the murder....

I thought it was weird that Cathy O'Brien never mentioned anything about the Rothschilds or Kabbalists or implicated Jews in any significant way, but it's quickly becoming clear that the reason for this is that her version of the conspiracy theory frequently swaps out Jews for Mexicans.
Also, take a look at her version of the reptilian alien conspiracy theory:
De la Madrid had relayed the "legend of the Iguana" to me, explaining that lizard-like Aliens had descended upon the Mayans. The Mayan pyramids, their advanced astronomical technology, including the sacrifice of virgins, was supposedly inspired by the lizard aliens. He told me that when the aliens interbred with the Mayans to produce a form of life they could inhabit, they fluctuated between a human and Iguana appearance through chameleon-like abilities. "A perfect vehicle for transforming into world leaders." De la Madrid claimed to have Mayan/alien ancestry in his blood, whereby he transformed "back into an Iguana at will." De la Madrid produced a hologram similar to the one Bush did in his You Are What You Read initiation. His hologram of lizard-like tongue and eyes produced the illusion that he was transforming into an Iguana. While in Mexico, I was always ordered to wait by rocks where the abundant Iguanas sunned before being "trance-ported" to my scheduled meetings with "his Royal Lizardry," the Lizard of Ahs.

Thinking about DS9 and TSL...
Cursed thought in my brain, how could you play Deep Space 9 characters as Thirsty Sword Lesbian playbooks?
Quark: The Scoundrel
Clicked in my brain during yet another episode where the action starts with Quark having a fling with a one-shot character. Set aside the swashbuckling for a moment, Quark is a character who manages to play Lust at First Sight, Better to Seek Forgiveness, and One in Every Port every third episode.
Sisko: The Chosen
This really starts taking off during the last couple of seasons where the pressures of being The Emissary increasingly conflict with his values as a Starfleet officer.
Jadzia Dax: The Spooky Witch (formerly Scoundrel)
Focusing mainly on how nobody else really understands how the symbiosis works. Take Friends in Weird Places and Talk Nerdy to Me. She inherits One in Every Port from Curzon.
Kira Nerys: The Infamous (early seasons)
Talons of the Past since there are a lot of episodes dealing with her past as a freedom fighter/terrorist. Also Used to Disappointment given her trust issues with both Federation and Bajoran politics.
Garak: The Trickster
Moves: Center of the Web, Devious Scheme, and Knives Behind the Mask.
Odo: The Seeker
The Beast is another option, but it's a lot more in-your-face about assimilation. The Seeker focuses more on the strange outsider attempting to reconcile tradition with current life.
Tough to Fit: O'Brien and Bashir
The closest I can get here are The Devoted (to Starfleet) and The Nature Witch (straight out of the academy). This is an area where I'd consider a couple of new playbooks if they don't already exist: The Reliable and The Geek.

S4E20 "Shattered Mirror"
Sisko has been lured to the mirror universe, where he is piloting that universe's version of the Defiant to defend DS9.
Sisko: "Pattern Delta!" Miles "Smiley" O'Brien: "Pattern what??" Sisko: "Hard to port, hard to starboard!" Smiley: "I'll have to remember that one..."
[A few minutes later, facing down a Klingon Bird of Prey]
Smiley: "Do we run!?" Sisko: "Damn right we run - right at it!" Smiley: "Aah, pattern suicide."

The Maze Runner - Il Labirinto (2014)
Lost in the maze

"OTTAWA SCANS CASE OF 'TWO-GUN' O'BRIEN," Toronto Star. October 13, 1933. Page 3. ---- Request of U.S. Minister for Report Is Formally Received ---- SOLITARY 2 YEARS ---- "Had Been Given Exceedingly Bad Reputation," Prison Superintendent Reports ---- Special to The Star Ottawa, Oct. 13. The case of "Two Gun" O'Brien, held in solitary confinement in Kingston penitentiary, has become the subject of international representation. Hon. W. D. Robbins, United States minister to Canada, yesterday afternoon approached the Canadian ministry for external affairs, presenting certain data received from Washington and seeking information with respect to O'Brien's incarceration and reported long-term punishment. O'Brien is an American citizen.
To-day the under secretary of state for external affairs laid the case before the acting prime minister, Sir George Perley, who is also acting secretary of state for external affairs.
O'Brien, it is alleged, has been in solitary confinement in Kingston penitentiary for two years. The Canadian government has refused to make public any details with respect to O'Brien's term in Kingston, but the record is shown in the report of the Ormond investigation into the Kingston on penitentiary penitentiary disturbances, and of prior disturbances in the institution. O'Brien is the convict "E" of the report.
Dealing with the conspiracy of Aug. 5, 1931, Brigadier Ormond referred to convicts A, B, C, D and E as being implicated.
"Involved in the plot," said the report, "was a convict by the name of E, who had been given an exceedingly bad reputation by the police authorities and he, along with others, was placed in the punishment cells in the prison of isolation. Convicts B, C, A and D were released from the punishment cells and returned to the main cell block after approximately five months but convict E - has been kept in a punishment cell since that time and is still incarcerated in that place. He does not appear to have been tried and his case will eventually be the subject of a special investigation."
The report was dated Jan. 23, 1933, and is evidence that convict E has been in the punishment cell from Aug. 5, 1931, to Jan. 1, 1933. No re- port of a subsequent special investigation was ever made public but it is said in Ottawa that the reason O'Brien was not released was that he had made threats that he would kill a fellow convict he believed to have betrayed him and also one of the guards. He is alleged to have repeated these threats from time to time.
Pleaded For Release On Sept. 7, 1932, during his investigation, Brigadier Ormond listened to the complaints of convicts F, G, H, J, B, C, K and several others. "They each pleaded for the release of convict E," reports Brigadier Ormond. "Pleas were put forward on humanitarian grounds. This aroused my interest and I made inquiries as to the reason for E's detention in the prison of isolation. I was informed that he was credited with being the leader or instigator of the plot believed to have been concocted in the summer of 1931. Convicts B, C and H had all, at some time or other, been in communication or close association with convict E. Convict H admitted that he had been a partner in crime of convict E's at the time convict E was arrested on the charges on which he was convicted and committed to the penitentiary."
Describing the sequence of events during the 1932 riots, Brigadier Ormond reported: "After some speeches had been made, a number of the convicts started out the northeast shop dome door toward the prison of isolation. It appears from the evidence they intended to proceed to the prison of isolation to release convict E." A guard fired at them, however, and they went back. At later examinations of the convicts implicated in the riots further pleas were made for convict E.

Michael Biela: The Smile Ain’t Fake and Neither Is His Optimism
There are soooo many questions one could ask Michael Biela. Like, does he secretly despise Polka music but he’s just afraid to tell his father – and Polka legend – Rich Biela? Or can he explain why his precious, four-year-old daughter ALREADY knows she wants to be a pilot? A pilot? C’mon, Michael, be honest … Oh, and what the people really want to know is which Tucker in-law – Ryan, Shannon, or Kelly – is his favorite? Well? Of course, asking is one thing and getting answers is another, right? And, hey, why even bother with the supposed controversial inquiries when his replies are so predictable? Of course, rolling out the barrels is a way of life, and obviously, his daughter Annie is a big dreamer just like her parents. And anyone who knows Michael knows he’s a fan of everyone – even his wife Casey’s brother and sisters. So, instead, sticking with topics that reveal Michael as the full-time ambassador he is to the Wheeling area is most proper because his marketing work with the Wheeling Convention & Visitors Bureau is a passion he’s possessed long before reporting to work in downtown Wheeling. Michael is a Shadyside guy who earned his communications degree at Ohio University Eastern, and he and his bride have made Wheeling their home since September 2017. So, it’s easy to see the man’s existence is surrounded by love affairs not just with his wife, daughter, and his entire family, but also with where he lives and everything that goes with it. As the marketing assistant for the Wheeling Convention & Visitors Bureau, Michael gets to work with (from left) Noah Hedrick, Olivia Litman, and Executive Director Frank O'Brien. On a scale of 1 to 10 – with 10 representing the most difficult – how hard is it to do your job of promoting the Wheeling area? It's definitely a 1 for me. I feel we are so lucky to live in an area with such amazing amenities, and I enjoy passing that enthusiasm on to visitors. We are also fortunate to have great partners in our region and throughout the state, and we all work together to make sure we can provide the best experience possible to every guest coming to West Virginia. Visitors love it here for many reasons, from history to events, and we are always prepared to answer any questions they may have before they start their journey. What is the most common question asked by someone visiting Wheeling? We get some great questions at the CVB, but everyone always wants to know where the best places are to eat. Luckily for us, Wheeling has no shortage of food destinations. We, of course, get asked about Coleman’s Fish Market and DiCarlo’s Pizza due to their iconic statuses, but we always enjoy pointing out what’s new or a cool hidden gem. Currently, everyone is gearing up for the summer season, so a lot of questions are being asked in regards to festival dates, live entertainment throughout the city, and everything else taking place over the next few months. Summer is always an exciting time in our area, and this year is shaping up to be yet another successful season. Whether it's dancing to polka music or enjoying a festival at Heritage Port, the Biela family takes advantage of the many amenities in the Wheeling area. OK, it has to be asked … do you really like Polka music or was it a house rule growing up? (please explain) I really do like Polka music! My dad has been a polka DJ and a drummer in a polka band my entire life, so growing up it never seemed out of the ordinary. It was always on, whether on the house radio or in the family car. Attending the area dances and festivals always felt like a big family reunion to me. We now have the Wheeling Polka Festival every March at Oglebay, so I’m able to continue those traditions with my family here at home as well. Have you ever caught yourself dancing to polka music that’s only in your head? Don’t lie! Most definitely! So many of those melodies have been engraved into my brain over the years that I’m pretty much always humming the tune to one song or another. I love the musicianship behind it all and really enjoy watching the bands play live more than anything. Some of the instruments used in polkas are fascinating to watch being played, especially the concertina and clarinet. One of my favorites is the “Clarinet Polka” and to see Hall of Famers like Lenny Gomulka or Dennis Polisky play it live is a real treat. Michael has learned important lessons about life from his four-year-old daughter, Annie. What is the best lesson taught to you by your four-year-old daughter, Annie? The best lesson taught to me by my four-year-old daughter is finding the joy in life. As adults, we tend to forget to enjoy the little things in life. But, for example, when we’re on Wheeling Heritage Trail in the evenings and Annie finds the most amazing, spectacular leaf she’s ever seen in her life, and you see that look of wonder on her face over something so simple as a fallen leaf, that’s when the reminder to stop and take it all in really sets in for me. MEET THE O'BRIEN FAMILY
Their story began amidst the rolling emerald hills of Ireland, where they cultivated lush barley fields and crafted the finest ales known to their village. Drawn by the allure of opportunity, the O'Briens set their sights on America during the height of the gold rush. Yet, upon reaching the bustling port of San Francisco, they chose a path different from the others. Harnessing their unparalleled brewing skills, the O'Briens established a brewery nestled in the heart of San Francisco. Their mastery of the craft quickly earned them the reputation of master brewers.
As word began to get to them about other families banding together and heading north, the O'Brien's packed up their barrels of their finest ale and made the journey to what we now know as Fairford.
They made their home in Fairford and established the town's first brewery, O'Brien's Brewery, which is still up and running to this day. Their dedication and passion for their craft has left a lasting impression on the town of Fairford, as the O'Brien family descendants are still living up to the legacy they set.
SUGGESTED FCS FOR THE O'BRIEN FAMILY:
Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, Nicola Coughlan, Barry Keoghan, Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Colin Firth, Niall Horan, Molly Quinn, Orla Brady, Sean Maguire.
