i understand the whole “joost’s sudden popularity is so weird and wild to watch as a dutch person” perspective but its also kinda wacky from my perspective in the sense that im not a dutch person, but i became interested in the netherlands pre joost. however i am still looking at the netherlands from an outsider perspective, so its like when i look up his lyrics i understand some references he makes to his dutch upbringing but obviously not all. even then i have had experience with suddenly having an interest in a country and because its the netherlands im almost going. been there. done that. but i see you
#like i understand im an outlier in most cases involving internationals and the netherlands#but like my friend was saying all her coworkers talk about him#like in my case my coworkers know i like the netherlands#but in her case it’s really a case of he is that popular#and its so interesting bc his music is very dutch?? like his song guus meeuwis directly references per spoor#florida 2009 references ddwd#and every time i look up his lyrics in english theres twenty footnotes#just explaining shit#since its happed twice now with käärijä AND joost im inclined to say i want a deep dive#joost klein#joost#käärijä#käärijä effect#the netherlands#dutchblr

ok kind of an insane ask so feel free to ignore but would you be able to translate "友達バリア" by deco*27? i can't find any translations online and i wanna see if i'm right about the song kind of fitting the matsus... it's also a banger imo
- vocamatsu anon
omg.... tbh i have a feeling deco will make a video for this one which means we'll get an official english translation of it, rendering this completely redundant, but i'm really cheesed to have been asked, so i gave it a shot for you anyways <3
youtube
Friend-zoned, love fire, sparks flying HIBANA We're ready, set to lock horns, love's ultimate showdown I'm outmatched- but it's not over yet! I won't let this end! With a dazzling, never-give-up attitude, I'll break through your defenses!
The despair of never getting anything more of this Your behavior, nor what's going on in your head- I can't read it at all! I can't help but envy the kindness you radiate Omnidirectional compatibility- it's just not for me
Carefully-picked down-played words The outcome: A bloody heart True feelings double-crossed by embarrassment; how frustrating, I'm changing sides But that won't fill up my heart What I want is nothing more than to be by your side If you've got something to say, then say it- 'til I defeat you, that is! 3, 2, 1!
Friend-zoned, love fire, sparks flying HIBANA We're ready, set to lock horns, love's ultimate showdown I'm outmatched- but it's not over yet! I won't let this end! With a dazzling, never-give-up attitude, I'll break through your defenses!
I want you to like me! I want you to like me! Friend-zoned, love fire, hey, say "I give up"! With a dazzling, never-give-up attitude, I'll break through your defenses!
Fun things, good feelings- without you, they have no taste at all Sadness, jealousy- if they're cuz of you, then I don't mind them Let's throw down, bro! Better to regret doing it, than not doing it at all! A feeling like I won't need any special moves, YEAH I'm sure everything will be OKAY With an endless supply of love, you're undefeated, AYE Play dead, BYE BYE I'll be the one to throw the first punch
Friend-zoned, love fire, sparks flying HIBANA We're ready, set to lock horns, love's ultimate showdown The lonely and timid me is already no more! With a dazzling, blazing flair, I'll burn through your defenses!
Do you like me yet? Do you like me yet? Friend-zoned, love fire, now, let's immerse ourselves in love! With a dazzling, blazing flair, a never-ending HAO sweetener battle!
Do you like me yet? Do you like me yet? Friend-zoned, love fire, now, let's immerse ourselves in love! With a dazzling, blazing flair, a never-ending HAO sweetener battle!
------
my notes:
my overall interpretation of this song is "I'm trying to break through the friend zone (friendship barrier) so that you like me instead of thinking of me as a friend", so any vagueness in translation went in that direction
The use of "lock horns" in the official translation snippet + the HAO motifs give me the mental image of like, a hand-to-hand kung fu battle, so I leaned towards that imagery whenever there was vagueness (as opposed to like, a military campaign, for example)
deco's official english translations tend to be very liberal, so i tried to keep my translation a little more literal
#translation#i dont really like the use of 'friend-zoned' for the official translation of this#in general deco's english translations seem to favor localizing over keeping original meaning which i usually support wholeheartedly#but i feel like their en localizations sometimes lack a colloquial understanding of how these terms come across to english speakers#like the Vibe. i dont know if they grasp the Vibe#like on the surface 'friend-zone' seems like a reasonable localization for this concept#(Actually why is the localization the adjective form? shouldnt it be the noun? tomodachi barrier = friend zone? well anyways)#term for when you can't advance a platonic relationship to a romantic one + the term 'zone' is often used in fighting and battles#but colloquially i feel like this term has more of an Incel Connotation#due to its use being most popularized among men who see women as a prize they can win if they put enough effort in#+ its usage furthering the underlying expectation that women should date a man because he likes her regardless of how She feels abt it#of coures i know this is not the literal definition but again. the colloquialism. the Vibe. i really value the Vibe in localization#it gives off more of a pathetic desperate entitled vibe than a determined lonely feisty vibe which is what i personally got from the song#but vibes are subjective of course and dependent on one's personal experience#and who knows maybe that IS what deco's going for. i may very well be missing some japanese colloquialism as well#anyways as to if this fits the matsus.... well. they dont really have any friends in the first place do they#except totoko who repeatedly and easily beats them in hand-to-hand combat#i guess it could be atsutodo if you were full of whimsy#(suddenly coming back into the room) BY THE WAY I HATE HAO#I THINK HE'S TRYING TO DO THE THING WHERE HE JUST MAKES UP WORDS/MEANINGS BECAUSE IT'S THE KANJI IN SUKI#IT'S JUST AN EXTREMELY COMMON CHINESE WORD AND HE'S USING IT IN WAYS THAT SOUND SO DUMB AND WEIRRDDDDDDDDD#“a never ending HAO sweetener battle” <- WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE HAO HAPPEN? DONT PISS ME OFF#IM LIKE PRETTY SURE HIS TRANSLATOR IS EN/CN/JP TRILLINGUAL TOO SO WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE HERE#anyways thank you for the ask. mwah. i hope u enjoy this

[Image description: A digital drawing of a shot from the film La semana del asesino. It shows three hands holding a pair of binoculars. The hands belong to the characters Marcos and Néstor, although it is unclear which hand belongs to who, as they are indiscernible from one another in size and colour. One hand cups the bottom, and two hold onto either side. You can see the beginning of both of their shoulders, with Marcos' shoulder on the right and Néstor's on the left. There is a vague suggestion of a room in the background, with panelling and curtains. The lineart is a dark blue, and has very pronounced shadows. The colours for each element do not have any shading or lighting outside of this, except for the gleam on the binoculars. The colour scheme is desaturated and cold, mostly comprising of blues with small sections of yellows or even orange (for the binoculars' strap).]

#inktober#inktober 2024#la semana del asesino#la semana del asesino fanart#the week of the killer#the week of the killer fanart#marcos la semana del asesino fanart#néstor la semana del asesino fanart#digital art#im using the spanish title cos i used this director (albiet his 80s films primarily) for my spanish alevel irp so like#i just think it sounds better haha#also the week of the killer is still good but the more popular english title of the cannibal man is such a bad name for the film#only really one cannibal moment and even then thats tenuous#anyway tangent aside#great film great atmosphere#its quite gay (in the sense that concealed homosexuality may send u on a killing spree)#which is quite impressive considering the time and censorship it was made under#also it has pretty neat sfx stuff (very 70s) which i like :)#this shot and scene is 💛💛💛#also i know which hand belongs to who but i thought the close-up kinda conceals that which is nice <3#song of the day is pictures of you by oingo boingo#my favourite band but i feel like ive already said this b4#so obviously i think its a banging song

was refreshing myself on some old myth for a bit and i read the french and english wiki page for the Charybdis' mythos, and i'm noticing something that i don't know if it's just the wiki being inaccurate or an actual difference (from the linguistic page it seems to be an actual difference) but
In English there's this expression about choosing between two equally bad horrible situations by saying "choosing between Scylla and Charybdis"
But in French the expression is "to fall from Charybdis to Scylla" and instead of a choice it's about managing to get out of a horrible situation only to get thrown into an even worse situation (the equivalent of the English's expression ""falling out of the frying pan into the fire")
if i believe the linguistic page there was a bit of borrowing around and technically both expressions are used in both language, but you're more likely to find the first one in English and the second one in French (very likely because Victor Hugo popularized "to fall from Charybdis to Scylla" with Les Misérables) (does not mean it started in French the origin of the expression is still Greek anyway, just talking about why the saying is more popular in French with weirdos like me)
idk i think it's cool on a sort of metatextual perspective that English People saw this myth and when "oof imagine picking between those two" while French people just chugged a bottle of wine and went "And it's a BINGO and LIFE SUCKS and it NEVER GETS EASIER you get BOTH OF THEM BABEYYY"
#in my personal honor defense before anyone ask i know this myth and expression ever since i was a kid#there was an Odyssey cartoon when i was a kid i was constantly watching and it was like. my first introduction to the mythos and stuff#i did read bits and pieces of the book and read lots of wiki pages in the year#and i used to use this expression until i forgot how to say Charybdis. My dyslexia stopping me from being a pedantic intellectual.#(was always funny as a kid to just say that in front of adults who were just staring like hey what the fuck)#why am i refreshing myself now? Is it because of the whole buzz about the Odyssey lately? No. Absolutely not.#i'm looping a song i really like and that is very melancholic (yes in my Solas playlist) & it has the word Maelstrom which i didnt know#which got me into a wiki page about those and made me go 'ooooh like Char-- wait what's the name again'#and so i was doing a wiki dive on Charybdis before looking further into things#because i am terrified of sea monsters/horrors in a very morbidly curious way#i love scrolling through google image of sea monsters while just trembling in fear the whole time (real. not a joke.)#so i was doing that and i was reading the french wiki first and saw back this expression#but the french wiki being a bit short i switched to english and was :O to see the expression wasn't the same#so then i started a deep dive on the linguistic wiki page#to answer your question: no i was never diagnosticed officially with ADHD but enough qualified people have told me 'huh do you have ADHD or#anyway fun stuff. love language. love how we look at mythos and create expressions from it#even when it's dissimilar from one language to the next because the origin of the expression is different in popularity#or simply because the horrors of the myths can be interpreted differently by the people making those expressions#ISNT IT FUN. LANGUAGE AND MYTHS ARE COOL.#ichatalks#wait i didnt even finish checking the lyrics of the song i was checking give me a sec

Sometimes you gotta send an article with a lackluster closure cuz that is better than sending no article.
But just for the record, if I were allowed to write in English (which I'm not) it would had been titled "arts and ads" And would end with something along the lines of: "More than just jingles and songs is needed to enhance the top of mind awareness of a brand. However, if the song is catchy enough, the consumer won't be able to get it out of mind, which might bring similar benefit to the sales."
#If it still sounds lackluster then please remember that English is my 2nd language#Anyway#hope my teacher likes my unhinged references of popular and not so popular culture#since it's a blog article it's a pretty casual thing so I was tempted to end it with a link to songs that mention brands#Para mi gente latino#También la de Shakira y Bizzarap#mi reloj es Casio entonces no podía no mencionarla jaja

okay first of all was anyone going to tell me that ac/dc is an australian band. and second of all was anyone else going to tell me that they're apparently colloquially referred to as "acca dacca" in australia
#i knew about some general australian slang like maccas and utes and blueys but it never occurred to me that ac/dc would have one too#mostly because i just assumed they were english like so many classic rock bands i know.#ALSO APPARENTLY THE WIGGLES ARE AUSTRALIAN TOO I SAW ON THE NEW DEFUNCTLAND TODAY#i never watched the show as a kid i just vaguely was aware of some of their more popular songs#its so so fucked up to me genuinely how much accents tend to just Disappear when you sing. like where'd they go lol#anyway i was gonna say#i need to go back and do my music autism analysis shit for the rock songs i grew up hearing#i was telling latimer a lot of classic rock music feels like. like its Default Music to me somehow#like oh yeah jukebox hero we all know jukebox hero of course. whats that latimer? oh. youve never even heard of Any foreigner song. huh#so i need to like. go through all the music from my childhood. im in my childhood trauma reclaiming era anyway like i might as well#i want classic rock to go from being my 'childhood music' into my 'scavengerverse (oc) music'#like how styx and disney songs are my 'neopets ocs music' from when i was 12and AJR is my 'webcomic dev music'#god i want to be so autistic about music right now but im so sleepy tired. fuck my stupid baka life

Objectively very funny to me that I started listening to stray kids with absolutely zero knowledge they had 2 Australians in the group, literally just saw a mutual post one of their songs and listened to it and was like "Oh that was so fun!" And then for the next month I was listening to some of their songs on and off and it wasn't until I heard Muddy Water that I went on my twitter like "Hoh, this guy really sounds Australian" and immediately, and I mean *immediately* 2 people were on my post like THERE ARE 2 AUSSIES IN THE GROUP JESSIE. YOURE FUCKIN AUSTRALIAN, HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW? and I was just 🧍♀️
#i think muddy water was the first heavily english song the playlist threw at me so i did technically clock the accent as soon as i heard it#i just hadnt heard it yet#and instead of googling stray kids and finding out i instead tweeted it and made my self look like a right fuckin dink#also i havent paid attention to popular media for like 5 yrs </3#was really funny tho people just appeared and started linking felix deep voice tiktoks#and the Aussie line comp vid and that was the beginning of the end bc i was so thoroughly charmed
