Listening to NPR has been a bit of safe haven the last several weeks because like, sure batshit scary things are happening, but at least there are credentialed, knowledgeable people speaking reasonably about those batshit scary things.
Except today as I was on my way to the gym, I listened to a segment where NPR was reporting on the fact that Trump is attempting to remove funding to/shut down NPR (and PBS) and I was like. Ah. Of course. I should have suspected this.

Ok ik this is mean and irrelevant but I’m curious: People with running Supernatural postcanon AUs, via fic, art, in their heads etc:
Please rb to spread, as an amateur folklorist and historian I’m kind of desperate to get a snapshot of whatever transition is taking place.

in light of recent events with the election, i want to remind everyone to take care of themselves the best they can. i know that things are really hard right now for so many people—women, poc, lgbtq+, especially. but please do not forget that there are people out there who love you, who care for you, and wish nothing but the best for you. check in on your loved ones, and check in on yourself 🤍
i love you. we’ll be ok. it doesn’t feel that way now, and it might not feel that way for awhile. but we’ll be ok.

something about the tiktok ban that i haven't really seen people here talking about is the experience of tiktok users not from the usa, which was, as far as i can tell, on the whole, very positive. it was actually really nice to, for a short period of time, be on a major social media network and able to interact with people across the world without usamericans constantly inserting themselves into every conversation.
usamericans kind of take over people's fyp regardless of where you're from. this is partly to do with the fact that the creators fund is only available to usamericans so most of the shitty content farms are from the us. then there's also the cultural aspect of the fact that being a citizen of the most powerful empire in the world is a significant privilege, and also a privilege that 99% of usamericans are seemingly unable to acknowledge, plus the us centrism and exceptionalism, plus the constant need to cast themselves as the underdog, and, well. it's annoying.
so, like. everything of what i've seen (which is not to say that other opinions don't exist, just that i haven't seen them) is that it was really nice when the usamericans were gone, and it kind of sucks that they're back.
#tiktok ban#<- for those who are (very justifiably) sick of hearing about this#anyway also important to note that 99% of what ive seen has been from europeans canadians and australians#and i can guess that for people from asian african and south american countries it was probably just their feed being taken over by#other annoying english speakers rather than usamericans#and the 'commonwealth tiktok' thing (especially the fact that its referring to specifically uk canada and australia#and NO OTHER COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES)#is uh. not great!#so im not saying like. magical utopia where everyone was equal#but im just saying that. idk there is no global major social media that isn't overrun with usamericans#and for about a day there was#anyway would be cool to hear from other non-usamericans!#especially if you're not european nor from from a european settler state#question is there a specific word/phrase that would include the citizens of countries like the usa/canada/australia/etc#but not the indigenous people of those places?#and no just saying white doesnt work because in those countries non-indigenous minority ethnic groups are still there under#the authority of a colonial government#and also im talking about privilege along the axis of nationality here as opposed to race/ethnicity#and the question of nationality gets complicated when we're talking about specifically the indigenous people of#an area currently controlled by a settled colonial state#ALSO also in regards to the fact that the whole thing was a trump propaganda stunt#and that there's now censorship of things trump doesnt like#its yet another example of how everyone else in the world gets directly affected by us politics#despite the fact that in this case the social media isnt even a us company#and not to say that it doesnt also suck for usamericans#many of whom voted for harris#but also. at least you got a vote.#the rest of us just have to live with the fact that whoever you guys elect will have a direct impact on our lives#and usamericans just don't experience this. like e.g. british elections have no impact on your lives#but your elections have a massive impact on our lives (and even worse for countries in the global south)

The 2028 Election.
Final results: Jon Ossoff and Wes Moore of the Democratic Party, 332 Electoral Votes. JD Vance and Marco Rubio of the Republican Party, 191 Electoral Votes. Mark Cuban and Krysten Sinema of the American Restoration Party, 15 Electoral Votes.
Trump's presidency, under his second term, had been devastating to the economy, which governed his response to Impact Day more than anything. He saw it as a chance to really spin things up, move in a direction where he could be seen as this great American titan for the industrial base. That didn't pan out. His refusal to work with California legislators and ultimate abandonment of much of the federal funding surrounding Impact Day left the Pacific states to largely fend for themselves. The GOP, paralyzed by a future without Trump, began to scrounge for their next pick. The economy, shattered by an unsuccessful trade war with China and the fallout of the asteroid, prompted many to look in a new direction.
This is what Cuban and Sinema so desperately tried to do, spinning up their own independent party mostly consisting of not-too-liberal but not-too-conservative evangelicals in an effort to advocate for the "the restoration of American values." They crashed and burned pretty quickly, only really resonating with isolated patches of Americans in the western half of the country.
Ossoff and Moore won on a platform of restoration, breaking down the red tape to address systematic issues which had festered under the Trump presidency, as well as a baseline "return to normalcy" that so many Americans were desperately searching for in the wake of energy shortages, shipping and logistics concerns, and relocation in response to the Asteroid. Ossoff's "Breaking down the Barriers" speech, delivered at Los Angeles City Hall in August, 2028 was largely credited as a definitive path to victory for the Democrats, as the Ossoff/Moore team was the only one to visit the devastated areas of Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as meeting with Govenors of impacted states. California Governor Kamala Harris was present with Ossoff and Moore on Election Night, as they watched the results come in. Speaking on November 10, President-Elect Ossoff spoke of a "new, prosperous age" for America, adding that "January 20, 2029 will be a step towards a greater understanding of the world, and ourselves."
Artifact dated November 9, 2028.
Many thanks to Jess for the election assistance!

So the mainstream media is basically bullying Biden for ratings and indirectly helping Trump's campaign. (Rant.)
It's cooling down a little now, but it's been genuinely distressing how even the more left-leaning mainstream media won't shut the fuck up about Biden doing bad at the debate.
We get it: Biden is old. But why so little coverage on all of Trump's lies through and since the debate? Because the American people already know Trump lies, and they're desensitized to it. Talking about Trump's lies doesn't get clicks. Making people angry about Biden, however, does bring in the views. Lemme say that one more time:
Reporting on Trump's lies doesn't make them as much money; Exaggerating Biden's flaws, however, does.
Americans are literally fighting to keep their democracy and these outlets only care about bringing up the same drama over and over again for ratings. They can hardly mention a single good thing Biden has done without shoehorning in at least one or two comments about how "everyone is saying he should step down." If Biden steps down, Trump will most likely win. Full stop.
The other day I was listening to 4 different mainstream news outlets talking about how "so many" Democrats in the house and senate had publicly called for Biden to step down. The total at that time? Nine people. That's 9 out of over 250 Democrats. A few more have popped up since, but that was "so many"?
It has never been so obvious that CNN was essentially taken over in the shadows a couple years ago by billionaire John Malone (who claims he's a Libertarian, but is a Trump donor who hangs with far-righters.) Watching otherwise competent newscasters and panelists resort to soap opera-levels of bad acting to push the narrative their bosses wanted was some painful secondhand embarrassment.
Another example: MSNBC, which is pretty damn left, posted the following the other day:
Tumblr media
That sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? Here's the thing though: SEN. BLUMENTHAL LITERALLY DID NOT SAY THAT. The actual quote is as follows:
"I am deeply concerned about Joe Biden winning this November, because it is an existential threat to the country if Donald Trump wins. So I think that we have to reach a conclusion as soon as possible. And I think, Joe Biden, as the Democratic nominee, has my support."
What kind of context-shredding garbage was that, MSNBC? It's straight-up misleading; A lie through omission. But unless you were to look up the video or a full article, you'd never know that.
We get it. Biden is old. Here's the thing though: It's not only a vote for Biden, it's a vote for the Democratic administration he brings with him. Biden may be the nominee, but he is surrounded by highly educated folks who have the American people in mind rather than blind MAGA loyalty. You may not agree with some of their policy, but you cannot deny that a MAGA administration would be far, far worse.
If you haven't yet, please look up "Project 2025".
As much as it sucks being in what is essentially a 2-party system, it's what the Americans are stuck with for now. So I leave you with this:
Not voting is a free vote for Trump.
Voting third-party is a free vote for Trump.
Voting for a write-in is a free vote for Trump.
For the love of democracy, vote blue; No matter who.

You know this is gonna have an impact outside of the election, right ? You understand that this is likely going to result in an upsurgence in violence against already vulnerable populations, and that it is going to be worked into preexisting radical ideologies and bolster them, likely in ways that will have very broad and wide reaching impacts, right ? You understand that, right ? Because if your understanding of the greater impacts of donald trump getting a new ear piercing entirely start and end with how its going to impact how people vote than maybe you are not as politically conscious as you like to pretend

the thing is that whats happening is really scary. not because everything is going to fall apart - he may do far less damage than we fear.
but because this outcome has people afraid for their lives and uncertain if they want to live. democracy should never leave such a large proportion of people fearful.
yes, there will always be people upset about the outcome of an election - usually around half. but there should never be people interested in harming others or constructing conspiracy theories, and absolutely never people interested in harming themselves.
American politics, radicalism and individualism has gone too far and its dangerous.
