Data shows that many police are quitting the force after internal conflicts and lack of mental health support. Some report receiving internal complaints filed against them after standing up for other officers who were being mistreated. Others face persecution at the hands of senior officers. Only 30% “had confidence in the ways the organisation resolved grievances”. Dodgy compensation deals are arranged to avoid police structures and culture being publicly scrutinised.

Dysfunctional. Corrupt. They can’t even treat their own people well.

I’m at work but I'm on break so I have time to jot this

One of the ideas I’m experiementing with Pisca is after she makes it to ‘mainland’ which I'm thinking could be either Mexico or just the American boarder, and gets crapped through the Immigration process of trying to figure out where the hell she’s from, I could see her getting extremely into law and justice.

The modern world is alien to her, but one thing she’s amazed by is the justice system. Laws to protect civilians, arrests and restraining orders, officers who serve to protect and serve those who can’t. The police force is EXTREMELY corrupt I know, but in comparison to a witch burning island, she’s got very rose tinted glasses.

Her first language is latin, and after being put into the system, learning Spanish and English and adapting to a whole new writing and reading process, I can see her trying to become a police officer. it’d be something that takes her YEARS, but in the modern world, there’s no need to wake up before dawn and tend to crops and fight an ocean for hauls and try to defend your life every day, everything is just bought. She’s alone for the first time with nothing to distract her: As well as her being heavily drawn to the justice system for her own desires, she also just needs something to do. I doubt she’s ever been truly bored in her life

When and if she ever becomes a uniformed officer, THAT’S when I can see her learning about corruption and racism and prejudice. Pisca is... opinionated. And she an angry person. In years past that anger’s mostly mellowed into monotone, but it bubbles up pretty suddenly when provoked. From there it’s a mix of trying to fix issues herself, and then finding out about outside groups ALSO trying to help end police corruption. That, is how I see her slowly learning to socialise and trust people, and maybe even learn to enjoy herself rather that only focus on staying alive.

I also had ONE idea where she adopts an immigrant child to keep her out of the foster system she’s so scared of, but that’s still up in the air. The girl’s name is Oralee and she’s a furious beanpole of shin kicking and ankle biting. Pisca likes her :)
