Morning

Mal posts the player-made zine on FreeDF. You can find it by adding the URL slug /dans-des-circonstances-eternelles to en-abime.com. She has decided to visit Tati, although it is unknown where she is right now.

Since the zine mentions a twin by name, they visit it and share a PowerPoint of all the information they had about Thomas (accessible through clicking the glitch on the page.) (It is unknown where the twin is right now.) A letter in a different font (the “T” on “The Incident”) links to w-h-a-t-h-a-p-p-e-n-e-d.

Summary: This PowerPoint includes a photo of Thomas and the details around his disappearance: He was a freshman exchange student at Princeton University in New Jersey whose parents had died 2 years before of the flu. He went missing in October of 1915 – he checked into a carrel in the library and never checked out. (The footnotes note these carrels are now in Firestone Library.) He was “kind of an introvert” but an “excellent student,” so no one noticed he was missing until months later. The Works Cited page of the PPT only lists en-abime.com as well as the page for requesting visitor access to Firestone Library. Players speculate this may be the site of a geocache.

The zine page also links to Mal’s Favorite Gigs in NYC. This page begins as a blank page and populates with pop-ups addressing the reader as you scroll down, before showing a list of Mal’s bands and performance venues – potentially another geocache lead? It also features a voice that speaks in blackout poetry, similar to the blackout poetry sections of the CYOA.

Summary: The pop-ups ask the reader to record information about themselves (to presumably join the abime) – “Log on now!” “Share abundantly your photographs, experiences, and stories with your friends.” It then presents Mal’s list of gigs as “a gift.” The list of gigs lists the band and location of each performance, as well as a short description of Mal’s experience performing with them. Mal’s handwritten note at the top reads “if you haven’t got an I.D., even a fake one, FORGET ABOUT IT, DUDETTE!” Below the gig list, the pop-ups ask the reader to “Match them with the right keys to the kingdom” for an “instantaneous cure,” “but hurry, a machine for living won’t be hanging around for long.” Below this, the blackout poetry voice begins, imploring the reader to “stop feeding us.” Their requests and cries for help are similar in tone to the ones in the CYOA.

Mal’s Favorite Gigs page leads to HELP, what looks like a customer service page with a set of Q&As and a form. The page is written by (and the Q&As are answered) by the same voices from the Mal’s Gigs page (Ad pop-ups and blackout poetry). The header at the top of the page toggles between “archive” and “appetite” on hover, and “appetite” is “all” while “ARCHIVE” is “NOTHING.” The form is “for Urgent Retrieval Concerns” and asks the reader to “DESCRIBE: WHAT YOU SEE. WHERE YOU ARE. WHERE YOU HAVE SOUGHT. WHERE YOU HAVE NOT YET SOUGHT.”

Summary: The two voices describe themselves as brothers, and have very different personalities. The popup voice describes itself as our “friend,” and encourages the questioner to find “these things” and “make them happy.” The question text eventually goes off the rails: (“Why is my skin so heavy? Why are my eyeballs so dry? Why are my bones so wet?”) to which the popup text voice answers, “You aren’t there yet, friend, but you’re doing well!” In contrast, the blackout poetry voice describes itself as our “bastard creation” and says that if we are “here” it has “failed.” It begs us to “please don’t go looking for this [...] please instead forget all about this. About them. About me.” On the left side of the page are a list of what seems to be various manifestations of HEAVEN, a series of tips that seem to be for geocaching, and there is a form at the bottom that asks for location, time, name of who they are looking for, and a description of their location.

Afternoon/Evening

Players submit form responses to HELP, most of which receive unhelpful answers via email. 

Players submitting questions to the form received a response from the email en-abime-dot-com@gmail.com from a username THE ARCHIVE THE APPETITE. Most contained a screenshot of their question and a popup image reading “USE TOOLS FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE.” Some emails contained an additional image reading “HA!HA!HA!” 

At 2:41 PM EST, player sylvan receives a reply to his email “bonjour” with the additional image “I DON’T SPEAK FRENCH” and the subject line “19/20” A minute earlier at 2:40, another player Vincent received a similar email with the subject line “20/20.” Later, Vincent receives another, this time with the subject line “18/20.” Players decide not to send more emails until figuring out more about the “INTENDED PURPOSE” so the countdown stops. 

At around midnight, player charles entertainment cheese sends a question: “We have looked everywhere. We are Thomas stretched across En Abime. I want to know where he entered from - Princeton? New Jersey? The Library? We have looked across as many pages as we have. We have found him in PDFs and websites where his past self is recorded and archived.” This receives a different response, without a countdown number, hinting that these questions are closer to the “INTENDED PURPOSE” and “for greater knowledge on more subjects, use your library often!”

Overall Theories

Players think these pop-ups and blackout text are two new characters, the Archive and the Appetite, which may be made up of the Abime itself. They seem more powerful than the other characters and may have placed the flyers around the different locations. They seem to want us to find whatever information they don’t yet know, and are interested in physical geocaches.

as many of yall may have noticed by now, I love fact-checking anon hate, so let's goooo!!

I don't recall any original posts or reblog additions I've made about myself in that tone, but feel free to follow up with links if I'm forgetting something.

I did do a search for the word "unemotional" on my blog, as I'm reasonably confident that I've repeatedly expressed my emotions on my blog, and that the handful of posts I made discussing psychopathy & the misinformation about it deliberately addressed that psychopathy is not a condition of "no emotions" as many people assume.

I searched "cool" and found the one from a few hours ago where I called my wife cool (which I completely stand by), a bunch of reblogs from other people that included the word, and a couple references to irl friends of mine. I did not find any instance of calling myself cool, though I def agree that that would be 100% eyeroll-worthy.

I'm interested that you find my attempt at a lighthearted/playful mention of the genuinely traumatic experiences of being in situations that had me end up briefly considered clinically dead "embarrassing." That totally reflects very well on you and very poorly on me forsure.

Finally, I'll conclude with a reminder that, while I do find these somewhat snarky fact-checking responses fun to do, I don't and honest to God can't take any hate anons to heart. Not because I'm "unemotional," but because, as I've said about a hundred times, it goes against my personal code to send ANY anons, hate or not. It is very, very important to me to attach my name to everything I choose to say to anyone besides my wife. If you can't hate me with your (still technically anonymous) URL attached, how on earth am I supposed to take it personally?

And I've also said this before, but for the love of God, if you want to actually want to hurt someone's feelings, just do your damn homework and go with something that isn't easily disproven/rebuked. This blog's engagement & the engagement posts like this one get just about every time tell a pretty clear story. So then how are you going to try to convince me "everyone" feels that way? This is low effort and weak. Just fuckin do better. I'm getting tired of having to tell anon haters this. I'm begging yall to do better.

Coding support: I'm having a problem with the OpenDyslexic font. If a player tries to change the font to OpenDyslexic, it won't change at all.

Could you please tell me what I'm doing wrong in my code?

Hi there Anon !

Since you did not include your code, I am not sure where it could have gone wrong. [I would need the JavaScript of your settings and the CSS code related to the font import and the change of fonts.]

But OpenDyslexic is, unlike other online fonts, a local import. This means that you need to include the font files with the other game files (or create an online import link to a hosting server). Note: it is best to have local import for anything used in your project (font, image, etc...) in case the online server hosting your files shut down.

I might as well make a quick general tutorial...

FONT CHANGE AND LOCAL IMPORT

The differences between importing a font from a server and a local import are:

where you put the files

You can find the code below in my templates on on my pastebin account.

File location

Obviously if you import a font from an online server, you don't need to save the font anywhere. But if it is a local font, you need to include it with your game files. For easier organisation, I advise you to create a separate folder for it. Here is mine:

I use the same organisation for all my projects. Makes it easy to know were stuff is.

What is most important is to know where the file is relative to the index file (to link it in your CSS) and not forget to zip the whole thing together before you upload your project.

The Import

The code to import a font is also different between an online and local import. For the online import it is a simple one:

@import url('https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Georgia:wght@400;700&display=swap');

You just need to add the URL of the font. Google will provide just one like for multiple online import (of different font families or font weight within one family). Different services will provide different URLs for their fonts. For example, the one below is from FontAwesome:

On the other hand, local import will require more information, like below:

You will need to create an import rule not only for any new font, but also for each weight and style of said font. The example above includes: normal, normal bold, italics, italics bold. You also need to :

define the name of the font family (to use in the rest of your CSS code)

add the font file URL (relative to the index file) and include the format of the font, there are only 4)

the font style of that file

and the font weight of that file

IMPORTANT: the @import and @font-face needs to be the first thing in your Stylesheet/CSS file. Otherwise, it just won't work.

I also like to include all fonts (and color) in the :root CSS rule. So it would look like this

THE JAVASCRIPT SETTING

Now that you imported all fonts you want, you need to create a setting for the player so they can get the font they want. Here is the one I have in my templates:

In the first [] brackets, you have the name of the fonts the player will see. You don't need it to be the exact same name as the font. It can be just Serif, Sans-serif, etc..

Under switch (settings.fontFamily), you define a case for each font you want to include. First the name of the case (to be found in the [] brackets), then the CSS class required for the switch. So for the case Georgia, I created a serif CSS class.

Don't forget to add all created classes in the parentheses of $html.removeClass("sanserif serif opendyslexic");.

THE CSS CODE pt 2

And finally the CSS font change. There are two ways you can do it: do a general change for everything or just target some aspects of your UI. In any case, you need to use the defined CSS classes you wrote in your JavaScript.

For the first, you will target the body class. This will change the font of the whole thing (main passage, side-bar and dialog box):

Since I defined the font families in the :root rule at the start, I used var() here to call it instead of the actual family name and type of font.

If you only want to target some aspects of your UI (because you want to use a special font and don't want it to change), you will need to essentially add all classes you want to target with the font switch (here the passage/dialog body):

hi! after the last playlist exchange i ran in may i had quite a few people tell me they’d like to do another one so it took a while but we’re back again! this exchange is a fun way to maybe make a new friend in the fandom and hear some new music so if you’re into that, keep reading.

please read this entire post before signing up. i tend to be wordy but i’ll try to keep this as concise as possible.

the basic premise of this exchange is like a secret santa. you will receive an email with the name and url of the person you are to make a playlist for and you will have about a week to make it. someone else will have your name and make a playlist for you.

sign ups will end on saturday the 9th at noon. emails will go out on saturday and sunday depending on how many participants we have. if you don’t receive an email by monday the 11th feel free to dm me and i should be able to tell you who your recipient is as i can see all of the matches. i use a secret santa organizer to assign your recipients so the email will say its from Santa Claus lol. check your junk too if you don’t see it.

playlists should be sent to your recipients on friday the 15th.

on wednesday the 13th you should receive a dm reminding you of the upcoming deadline and to make sure you’re still on board. if you say you won’t have your playlist ready on time or you don’t respond in 24 hours i will assume you’ve dropped out and find another person to make a playlist for your recipient. because i ran into trouble with tumblr’s dm limit last time around i’ve enlisted the help of @punkwildebeest @broken-city-sky and @pitchforkred , your dm may come from any one of us. please have your dms open. 

no matter how smoothly this runs there will be people who forget or have to drop out, so there is a section on the sign up form asking if you’re willing to make a second playlist on short notice in the event that someone drops out. this is totally optional and just so that i know who i can contact in the event that i need another playlist made.

related to that, if you don’t receive your playlist by the afternoon of saturday the 16th, feel free to contact me and i’ll get a playlist made for you.

this event is open to everyone. you do not need to be following me to participate, the only requirement is that you are a fan of mcr. i explain this in the form, but participants will be split into groups of minors and those over 18 so that everyone should be comfortable with who they’re making a playlist for.

i explain this in the form as well, but the method for creating your playlist is limited to spotify, apple music, and youtube. participants will be split up here as well so that everyone is able to listen to the playlist made for them.

i apologise if this is not the most concise way to explain the problems that have been going on behind the scenes, but i feel it is only fair to say it.

fake opinion anons

primarybts had a habit of sending herself anons which expressed negative opinions on other people. this most prominently came to my attention when she posted an anon calling several writers overrated and talentless. i don’t have an exact screenshot of the post, but the jist of it is that the names in it are poorly censored, but include the likes of myself, babeejk (going by her previous url of course), worldwidemochiguy, sombreboy and junglekookbook. several of these people have all coincidentally had petty run-ins with primarybts before, and this anon was not all subtle about who it was hating on, yet primarybts posted this to her blog despite claiming to be our friend.

sending hate to others and herself with adoreyoukoo

adoreyoukoo has owned up to her part in this, and has provided screenshots to evidence these goings on.

the two had a fascination with sending hate to one writers in particular: babeejk (formerly known as gucieguciekook)

they also would send hate anons to primarybts herself, in order to evoke pity. in particular, anons telling her to k*ll h*rs*lf , in the hopes people would scorn this imaginary anon and send love to primarybts.

i would also like to bring up in this vein an anon that she received after i had had a disagreement with her. i had been rather civil in saying that readers owe nothing to us in the same way we owe nothing to them (on a post that is now deleted i believe), with me saying something along the lines of “you could leave this platform tomorrow and it would be fine, as you don’t owe them anything.”

primarybts obviously heavily disagree with my point, and a few hours after i had posted this she received an anon saying this:

sincerely, i cannot believe someone could interpret my point in that way. indeed, i don’t think anyone could hate primarybts but follow me, as we have very similar writing styles. this was an obvious strawman, sent to herself to make it seem as if i had been hating on her in the post, when i was simply disagreeing with the notion that readers have a duty to leave comments and reblogs.

when we became aware of these issues, i suggested a civil way to address this: speaking to primarybts herself. to do this, i set up a groupchat of the people involved so that no one would feel alone and could be gaslit without someone else there to back them up. throughout this, primarybts repeatedly denied the goings on and claimed ignorance on everything: when we addressed how the IP address was linked to where she was from, she blamed this on someone she knew IRL (you’ll see this again later.) we repeatedly tried to resolve our grievances to no avail.

this groupchat was later used against me, as primarybts claimed to one of my mutuals that i hated her, when in reality i was just tried to resolve our issues peacefully. 

months after this occured, primarybts messaged babeejk to claim that the hate anons that she (babeejk) had been receiving were entirely the doing of adoreyoukoo. she presented many cut up conversations to paint adoreyoukoo as the perpetrator. however, upon talking with adoreyoukoo months later we found that these screenshots were only telling half the story: they had both been participating in this, with the evidence to such being shown above. 

the apology

in january of 2021, i received a message from primarybts. in it, she admitted that everything i had spoken about in the groupchat was true and that she needed to get the guilt of this off her chest. whilst not wanting to rush to forgive her, i showed sympathy and respect for owning up to these faults, and was hoping this could all be put behind us.

however, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks

a few months ago babeejk shared this with me. we disregarded it as petty comments at the time (this was before the apology) but I think it’s important to show it as well.

a few days ago, i was sent a screenshot of a post from primarybts-main’s account. she has both myself and babeejk blocked, but this was brought to my attention.

i mean, funny coincidence that this was posted around the time babeejk had posted a new quiz about herself? seeing this, i was disappointed and decided to speak to primarybts through my backup account. she, once again, gives the excuse that this post was about someone she knew IRL. and, seeing as this was the same excuse as last time - which she admitted was a lie - i called her out on such.

eventually, after a back and forth i gave up on trying to get an honest answer and just left the conversation.

i would have been happy if she had just never posted anything about us again. truly, i would have ignored her account and let this all stay private. but clearly she hasn’t moved on.

today, i was sent this:

there’s literally no way to explain this as anything other than a jab at me, knowing that my nickname is duckie and pretty much quoting what i had said to her. 

i’m sick of this toxicity. truly, i wish that things were over. but moving on requires change, and i’m waiting for the day when she will change. i know she still stalks my blog, and is going to see this but i don’t care. there are many more things she’s done, manipulating and guilting others alongside attacking her own friends but i don’t have the energy to list these - besides, as someone struggling mentally I could not deal with talking about topics like su*c*de right now.

these people may choose to speak out on their own. power to them if they want to, but equally i respect them if they want to forget about this - i wish that i could.

grow up. be responsible. and show love to your fellow writers, not hate.

A Love Song for Latasha (2019)

On March 16, 1991, Latasha Harlins, a 15-year-old African-American girl, was murdered by Soon Ja Du at Du’s convenience store in Los Angeles. The murder, which occurred almost two weeks after Rodney King’s beating at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), contributed to the start of the 1992 LA riots one year later. Directed by Sophia Nahli Allison, A Love Song for Latasha is an avant grade film that intercuts statements by Latasha’s friends and family about the young girl they cared deeply for. Alongside reenacted scenes of childhood, of black girls frolicking on the Californian coastline and the streets of Los Angeles, the film serves as an intimate eulogy for Latasha – one delivered as memories about her become less immediate.

Whatever justified rage the Los Angeles rioters might have felt in 1992 is not the dominant force in Allison’s film. A Love Song for Latasha is foremost a cinematic lament rather than a political polemic. With the reenacted scenes edited and appearing as if it resembling a home movie, this piece appears like a visualization of the memories that the interviewees are recalling. When Latasha was murdered, she ceased to be just a daughter or a friend. A Love Song for Latasha, thirty years on, seeks to reclaim those distinctions for those who knew her best – something, given the significance of Latasha’s murder in history, that may never happen.

Do Not Split (2020, Norway)

From Norwegian documentarian-journalist Anders Hammer comes Do Not Split, a street-level glimpse into the protests against the 2019 Extradition Law Amendment Bill (ELAB) that inspired the passage of the 2020 Hong Kong national security law. The events depicted in Hammer’s film include the Hong Kong police’s sieges of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in addition to small-scale clashes between protesters and police, as well as mainland Chinese instigating confrontations. Hammer’s footage is harrowing material, a collection of violent imagery with few moments of individual revelation or introspection outside of the presence of Michigan-born activist Joey Siu. Do Not Split decides not to attempt a dialectic of why the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) are pursuing these changes and are brutalizing the protesters, depriving this film of the context that less knowledgeable viewers might need. For those who have been keeping at least superficially aware of events in Hong Kong, there is never any question on which side Hammer is on – despite Hammer’s journalistic background, this is not a piece of objective journalism.

Yet this is not agitprop due to the politics left mostly unexplained, and none of Do Not Split’s flaws take away from the rawness of the protesters’ desperation and the cynicism of the police and government officials enacting the crackdown. Despite the repetitive nature of the footage by the time it reaches the final stages of its thirty-five-minute runtime, Do Not Split contains excellent, crisp hand-held footage that makes immediate sense of the space and time of the depicted violence.

Hunger Ward (2020)

For Pluto TV (some cord-cutting television service I was not familiar with until I started writing this) and MTV Films and directed by Skye Fitzgerald (2018 Oscar-nominated short film Lifeboat), Hunger Ward follows doctor Aida Al-sadeeq and nurse Mekkia Mahdi as they treat malnourished children in the midst of ongoing the Yemeni famine. The famine, directly related to the civil war that began in late 2014, has seen almost a hundred thousand children die in what UNICEF describes as, “the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.” Fitzgerald film works best when focusing on Al-sadeeq and Mahdi, as they describe the heartbreak conditions of the hunger ward and their experiences since the famine began. However, much of Hunger Ward’s footage is too in-your-face with footage of the mothers’ grieving and the last moments of several children. It appears almost as if gawking at the desperation and death that occurs every day in this hospital.

This is not to say that there is no revelation in the image of a child with their eyes glazed in lifelessness or the unearthly wails of a mother overtaken by grief. Fitzgerald edits and shoots their film in a way that makes this process – a child in their last moments of care, a declaration of death, a shot of the child’s corpse, a cut to the mother inside or arriving to the deathbed, and the echoing despair – occur tediously in their movie. Hunger Ward never breaks from this tedious formula. The film is redeemed only by withholding its slings and arrows until some text prior to the end credits, correctly assigning responsibility with Western nations that have enabled and abetted the violence in Yemen.

Colette (2020)

Colette Marin-Catherine is in her twilight years and, upon first appearances, one might not predict the incredible life story that she has to tell. She was a French Resistance member, and French Resistance narratives tend to be sidelined in favor of those depicting Allied soldiers liberating France instead. But Anthony Giacchino’s (the brother of composer Michael Giacchino) film, distributed by British newspaper The Guardian and made for an extra feature of the virtual reality (VR) video game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, decides to linger on the memories of Colette’s murdered brother, who died at Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp in Germany, instead. At the urging and with the assistance of the young historian Lucie Fouble, who is interested in telling Colette’s story (although technically this is not Colette’s story), Colette travels to Germany to visit the site of Mittelbau-Dora so that Colette can… spill out her feelings?         

It is self-evident that Colette does not see the academic or personal value of such a trip, but the irascible subject of this short film will nevertheless humor Fouble – her intentions genuine, her approach questionable. Colette, who cannot forget the loss of brother but has not been dwelling on his death, is emotionally vulnerable throughout the trip to Germany, and the audience learns little about Colette, German atrocities, or her brother. Even in these moments, she remains a compelling figure on-screen, but this movie is a disservice to its eponymous subject – one who deserves more credit as a member of the French Resistance, as someone not defined by the worst thing that had ever happened to her.

A Concerto Is a Conversation (2020)

Distributed by The New York Times and executive produced by Ava DuVernay, Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bower direct a deeply personal documentary short film to bookend this slate of five. A Concerto Is a Conversation contains a conversation between Kris Bowers (composer on 2018’s Green Book and 2021’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and his grandfather, Horace Bowers Sr., before the premiere of Bower’s concerto at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. What follows is a disjointed film with sketches of Jim Crow-era America from Horace’s past to the anxiety-laden self-questioning of Kris’ present. Kris, as a black man, is questioning his place in the classical music world – which has, justifiably in some ways, been seen as staid and white. If A Concerto Is Not a Conversation can bridge the differences between Horace and Kris’ stories, it barely does so thank to the scattershot editing.

Yet Kris and Horace’s conversation is wholesome, admiring, loving. This is Kris’ way to show his appreciation for his grandfather and the struggles that he endured for most of his life. The out-of-focus background makes A Concerto Is Not a Conversation seem almost like a dream, a meeting that almost should not be happening. And in honoring Kris’ profession and the piece that is set to debut, the film is divided into noticeable thirds – just like a concerto’s three movements. A Concerto Is Not a Conversation might not make for the most cohesive viewing, but it is a celebration of a profound bond, tied together by forces that defy even the most eloquent words: music and love.

How to Post your Works to the SQSupernova Collection!

That’s right - it’s almost time for Authors and Artists to put their beautiful works on display! We’ve made our beautiful, wonderful guide to help you post your work successfully - please read it THOROUGHLY before asking questions! We promise we’ve covered almost anything that could cause issues.

The posting deadline for all works is midnight EST on August 30th!

For those of you with experience posting to the Swan Queen Supernova collection from previous years, this year’s collection can be found HERE - just hit the ‘post to collection’ button and away you go!

Quick reminder - don’t forget to click POST when you are done formatting your work, NOT ‘save as draft’! We will not be able to see or reveal your work if you save it as a draft, and it will not count as being submitted!

For those of you who need more assistance as you prepare to post, read on for more specific instructions:

All right! For those of you who would like further clarification, your first step will still be to go to THIS LINK and click ‘Post to Collection,’ as seen below.

On this next page, you will enter all of the information about your fic/art - starting with rating, warnings, fandom, category, relationships, and characters. A sample page would look like this:

Please make sure your rating and warnings are accurate to your fic/art. If you think a warning might spoil something for the plot, you can select ‘Choose Not to Use Archive Warnings.’ Do NOT select ‘No Archive Warnings Apply’ unless your fic/art truly does not have any of the warning elements present in it.

The Additional Tags section is a place to put anything else you feel should be indicated about your story/art. Is it a historical au? Does it take place on a spaceship? Is it fluff? angst? crack? These tags are optional, but many people do use them to organize their fic/art or to find new fics to read and art to appreciate.

Next up is the preface section - this is how you introduce your fic or art!

Authors - you’ve already sent us a title and summary, so if those still work for you, go ahead and just copy them right in there! If you’ve changed some things up since that submission, go ahead and put your final version in here.

Artists - whatever title you use, it’s probably a good idea to add [Fanart] or [Art] to the end of your title, and to tag it as such in the additional tags as well - this will help people find art specifically!

Notes can be posted at the beginning of the fic - like if you are thanking a beta, or blaming someone for making you do this, or giving introductory notes to the readers about setting, etc - or at the end of the fic, if your notes might spoil part of the plot. You can also check both boxes and put notes in both places!

Now for the fiddly bits:

The first, and most important, thing to check is that under Post to Collections / Challenges, ‘SQSupernova6′ is selected. This should automatically show up, since you used the ‘Post to Collection’ button, but please check anyway!

You can also choose to gift your fic to someone - authors may choose to gift their fic to their artist, or vice versa. You should have their AO3 name from your match-up email!

‘This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work’ - this will be a handy section to connect your fic to your artist’s art, but you won’t be able to use it until after reveals. Skip it for now and come back to it later, once your partner’s work has been revealed!

‘This work is part of a series’ - if your SQSN was part of a series that you have already begun, you can link it to the previous parts here. Otherwise, skip it.

‘This work has multiple chapters’ - If you’d like to split your work up into chapters, select this option. Once you post the first chapter, you will be able to add additional chapters from the first chapter of your fic/art.

‘Set a different publication date’ - DON’T DO ANYTHING WITH THIS NOW. LEAVE IT ALONE. You will receive instructions in your reveal date email about how to change this date later, to help ensure that it shows up at the top of the Swan Queen tag, so you get the most eyes on it. You cannot change the date BEFORE the date of your reveal, so leave this field alone for now.

You’re almost there! First up are some privacy questions:

These are all options that can make it harder for people to leave mean or abusive comments - but they also make it harder for commenters without accounts to leave feedback, so consider the pros and cons before selecting!

And finally, it’s time to input your fic or art!

For fic - if you are comfortable with html coding, feel free to use the HTML editor button in the top right to switch editing boxes. Otherwise, the Rich Text editor will let you do most basic word editing functions, and will maintain bolding, italics, etc pasted in from Word or Google Docs.

For art, you will need some words in the post itself in order to post, so be sure to add a sentence or two about your work, then select the insert/edit image button:

Source - this is where you should paste in the url of the image you are hosting on another private site - so don’t publicly post it to your Tumblr! Use a PRIVATE post, at least until reveals are over. For a list of recommended sites, check out AO3′s helpful article on the subject!

Remember that your image URL needs to end in a filetype, like .jpg, .png, .gif, etc etc.!!! IT WILL NOT WORK IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A FILETYPE AT THE END OF YOUR URL. Your image will NOT appear if your link ends in .html, /, or any random numbers or letters.

Image description - this is very important for people who use screen readers because of vision impairments. Please describe your image as best you can, for example: this is a four-panel cartoon of Emma Swan, a barista, tripping over a chair and spilling hot chocolate down Regina Mills’ shirt. Regina is in a fancy blouse and skirt, and looks very, very pissed off.

Dimensions - if your source image is very, very big, it is recommended that you shrink it down a bit here. You can always come back and play around with the size once you post, so be sure to check that your image isn’t so big it’s hard to see all of it on a normal computer screen.

Aaaaaand, you’re done! If you’re confident everything is correct, you can click ‘Post Without Preview’ (you daredevil, you), but otherwise, click ‘Preview’ and give your story a quick glance over to make sure everything’s in the right place.

Then, once you’re satisfied, just make sure you click POST on the next screen - this is the only way to submit it to us for the collection!

If you don’t click ‘Post,’ your work will stay as a draft and will NOT be counted as submitted! Please make sure to hit POST once you have everything ready.

Once you post your work to the collection, it immediately becomes an unrevealed work. This means that its details are hidden from everyone but you and your beloved mods! Unfortunately, this also makes it a liiiiittle harder to find.

To locate your work once you post it to the collection, go to ‘My Dashboard’ by clicking on the menu that appears when you click on your username in the top right corner of the page, then click on ‘Works’ on the left-hand side.

From here, you can access your hidden work in one of two ways:

Click ‘Edit Works’ on the upper right side of the page. This will let you view all of your works, sorted by fandom, including the one you just submitted to the collection. Click on the title of that work to continue editing it!

Once your work is approved and added to the collection, you can also click ‘Works in Collections’ on the upper right side of the page. This will display all of your works that are currently in collections, sorted chronologically. Your SQSN work should be at the top, with “Unrevealed:” in front of the title. Click on the title of that work to continue editing it!

The URL of your work will also not change once you’ve clicked ‘post,’ so you can also bookmark or save it to come back to at any time.

If you need to add additional chapters to your work, you can do it by going to that URL or locating your fic again as described above, and clicking this link on the first chapter:

Just make sure to press POST on each additional chapter as well! ;D

So I started this blog back in December of 2019 and since then my account has grown to a collection of 5K of you which is absolutely insane! I love you all so much, that includes my mutuals, my followers and my lovely anons! I started this blog as a way to just write for my friends and share my stories with them, I never would have thought it would take off the way it did. You've all helped me learn to grow and get a little better as a writer (I still don't think I'm good enough yet but I promise I'm trying) Thank you to those who are supporting me and help me get by! 💖💕 - doing this now because I will forget come new years eve

Help rescue seals during the virus outbreak!

We all love seals, that’s why we’re here! Part of loving them is also wanting to protect and help them;  being a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. That is something that many seal rescues all over the world do, and unfortunately the virus outbreak is hurting them as well. With the virus outbreak having shut down rescues all over the world, they don’t have the usual visitors who would come and give donations that pay for the seals care, including food, supplies (like cleaning and maintenance) or medical care. 

Let’s not forget our rescuers! Let’s help spread awareness for these centers online!

Could you help me, and in turn help them? Here’s my plan! If you have adopted a seal from a rescue, or even just follow and like a seal who has been rescued please make a post about them. Your post should include:

The seal’s name and species

The name of the rescue center they are at

The URL of where people reading your post can adopt the seal and/or support the center

All the things that make the seal you adopted great! This may include the reason you chose the seal you did to adopt them, seeing updates on your seal, knowing you helped- all the reasons you love your seal and why you adopted them.

And of course photos of your adopted seal puppy!

Once you’ve made a post about your puppy send a link to it in my submissions! (Please do not @ tag me, my feed is flooded and I will most likely never see @tags) This way we can keep our rescue centers seen and not forgotten, and encourage others to help support the seals by sharing our adoption stories so followers might want to help too! It’s ok if you don’t have a big following- as long as I see your adoption story I can share it with my followers. If you see a future adoption story you like or touches you, reblog it to keep rescues not forgotten and perhaps encourage someone else to find the joy of adopting a seal puppy too!

Q. Can it be a past seal I adopted that has been released already? A. Yes! If a seal you adopted in the past has a story you want to share, please do! Even though people can no longer adopt that specific seal you can instead share the center’s current adoptee’s page.

Q. I adopted more than one seal. Can I make more than one post? A. Yes! It would probably be best to give each seal their own post so the post doesn’t get super long.

Q. Someone already made a post about the seal I adopted. Should I still make a post? A. Yes! Look at it this way, if you saw one post about Cloudberry, would that make you want to see another less? (If it were me and someone else already posted about a seal I wanted to post about, I’d just pick different pictures to keep it interesting.)

Q. I don’t have any followers, no one will see my post. :( A. If you put genuine effort into your post I’m planning to reblog them, you just need to remember to submit the link to my page, then all my followers will see your seal appreciation post! 

Q. Can I share a post on other media sites, such as Facebook? A. Yes! Please only submit the post if it is yours or I have permission to repost the content on my blog, as most followers are unlikely to click links and scroll past a post if it isn’t embedded. Q. Who are the pups in this post? A. Click the pictures, I put the rescue center and name (if available) as the image description.

Q. Can I share this post? A. Yes! Please share it with anyone you know who has adopted a seal and may want to help them further, including seal groups from other sites. They don’t even have to be a Tumblr user, as I can repost their post from Facebook or a direct submission to slushyseals at gmail dot com.

Dear anonymous asked if I read Elu fanfic and the answer was an obvious YES.

There are shitloads of fics out there and making a list is dangerous because there WILL be authors/fics I forget, but here goes. All of these people are enormously talented and horribly generous (one of the dangers of both reading and writing is that you constantly go “oh, fuck, they write so much better than me, why would I even still post my stuff”), so go check them out if you haven’t.

I’ll just add a break here because this will probably get long...

[I don’t really have a favourite trope or anything and I’ll generally try everything (except maybe real kinky shit, and I’m not too much into mpreg so I usually skip those too), but I have to admit that I don’t like to get into unfinished works that have been left lingering for months. I’m always afraid they will never be finished and my poor heart can’t handle being left in the middle of all that angst! And I’m not a big fan of RPF, so those will not figure in this list either.]

First, the person who kinda convinced me to give tumblr a second chance, @pinkplanetaries. She writes hilariously funny stories with usually a good deal of smut in there. I would suggest you you check out all her work here, but if you only have time for one I’d suggest Lemonade - includes social media!

One of my favourite Elu fics of all time is For want of gold by @lallemanting. I love soulmate aus and this one is just really beautiful, well-written, just the right amount of angst and enemies-to-friends-to-lovers-to-soulmates, paced perfectly, and the characters are all so easy to connect with. So yeah. I just love it. Her WIP Wandering tides has got me hooked, so, uhm, yeah, update pretty please?

I’ve talked about this one before, but A measure of stars by @lepetitepeach is just amazing! Pride and Prejudice is such an awesome classic to start with, and the way she ran with it just blows my mind. She has a bunch of other fics too, so go browse through them here.

A great author who obviously puts great care in to her stories is @surrealsunday . Her stories feature the whole SKAM cast, and she paints them all just so spot on it’s crazy. I can only imagine how much time and effort it must take to find the right photo’s to accompany the stories for the social media part of it, and don’t get me wrong, the stories would work great without them but the way they add to it is just insane. I haven’t started on her latest story Mood tattoo yet, which only makes my life more difficult, I can tell you, because everybody seems to love it, but yeah, go check out all her fics here if you like. If you don’t have time for a long multi-chaptered read, I can warmly recommend Spark to flame too.

I have recently been following the social media au Online love by @livvyblxckthxrn here on tumblr. I applaud the way she’s weaving a story just through text messages and pictures.

Even though I don’t like asmr I did enjoy the story about it by @greathalesonfire called You’re already the voice inside my head.

If you’re in the mood for sad Elu fiction, I have to point you to All you have to do, is kiss me ‘till I’m blue by @bluronyourradar. I can only hope her artist & muse au From stone, we sculpt symmetry will have a happier ending (can’t wait!) - either way, I like how she describes the setting and the characters in this one.

A very productive writer on AO3 - and I don’t know if they are on tumblr - is herilaveur. They have some imaginative aus so give it a go here.

Because I’m a sucker for bookstores and libraries I have to add The book I read was in your eyes by @kritiquer to this list. I know I missed a bunch of others - feel free to add them to this list! And while you’re at it, @kritiquer has a lot of other works posted which are all worth a read, find them here. 

@briallenko has quite a few stories posted here, they are very diverse so read the tags because some of them are rather heavy, but I did like the exploration of Vendredi 19:34 in Not afraid anymore.

Did you know that the evil mastermind prompter @nachtumringt has (half-) written an excellent fic in German called Consacré à Jupiter? For those of you who aren’t lucky enough to read German, try Dis/connected for some great non-linear storytelling.

Okay, on to A rose, by any other name by @flying-elliska. I admit, I was unsure about the premise at first, but I’m utterly hooked now! The world-building, the almost casual weaving in of the mythology aspects, the appearance of the whole gang and crew, the GORGEOUS descriptions, the spot-on characterizations... Count me in, please. Another story I’ve recently read and enjoyed and that also includes social media (seriously peeps, I feel like I’m lacking by just *writing* stories when I see all you talented authors using all these extra media) is One call away by AO3 user nutriscii - I’m sorry, I think they have a tumblr too, but I can’t remember? I was very into gravity falls at the time (especially loved the character Ford Pines) and once I thought of the pun I was basically obligated. it’s a pun on the last name but also on the “pining for the fjords” line in the dead parrot sketch from Monty Python’s flying circus

depends on how you count? I’ve def reblogged posts with counterarguments or had people argue with my posts, but I rarely go back and forth, and then usually only a single reply to a reply. I don’t get much engagement, and I only tend to write responses to good faith arguments or when I think the audience could benefit from seeing my reply. otherwise I just ignore or block when people try to start shit

hate them. anything that tries to make you feel guilty if you don’t reblog is shit. if the content of the post itself is worth spreading I Will reblog around that sort of comment or make my own post. have unfollowed people for posting too many of these before and will again
