Planty Mynah is cat mom to how many cats

i was like "lol planty mynah is a mother to an absurd amount i should doodle it" and then i got carried away. so have this.

this is barely a third of them btw. all the cats are feral/strays and mynah moreso takes care of them than like. owns them. she calls them all kitty baby but the storch is the one who gave them proper names (which are all names of mythological figures because she refused to call any of the cats something "stupid" like buttercup or whatever... much to mynahs chagrin)

the storch is absolutely the guy who never wanted a pet but bonds the most to them

New global research on soil mosses published today in Nature Geoscience reveals they play critical roles in sustaining life on our planet. Without soil mosses, Earth’s ability to produce healthy soils, provide habitat for microbes and fight pathogens would be greatly diminished.

The results of the new study indicate we have probably underestimated just how important soil mosses are.

Using data from 123 sites across all continents including Antarctica, we show that the soil beneath mosses has more nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium, and a greater activity of soil enzymes than bare surfaces with no plants.

In fact, mosses affect all major soil functions, increasing carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling and the breakdown of organic matter. These processes are critical for sustaining life on Earth.

Our modelling revealed that soil mosses cover a huge area of the planet, about 9 million square kilometres – equivalent to the area of China. And that’s not counting mosses from boreal forests, which were not included in the study.

Mosses are extremely absorbent and can attract airborne dust particles. Some of these particles are incorporated into the soil below. It is not surprising then that they have such a strong effect on soils.

Our modelling shows that, across the globe, mosses store 6.4 gigatonnes more carbon than soils without plant cover.

Losing just 15% of the global cover of soil mosses would be equivalent to global emissions of carbon dioxide from all land use changes over a year, such as clearing and overgrazing.

Monotropa uniflora

is also known as Ghost plant or ghost pipe.

Unlike most plants it doesn’t contain chlorophyll. Instead of generating food using energy from sunlight it is parasitic which makes it able to grow in the darkest of forests.

Even though it looks like a fungus it isn’t one.

It is a member of the blueberry family.

The sterms reach heights of 5-30 cm (2-12 in)

The stem bears a single flower with 3-8 translucent petals. If flowers from early summer to early autumn, often a few days after rainfall. This species has 48 chromosomes.

It is native to temperate regions of Asia, North America and northern South America.

The plant contains glycosides and it may be toxic to humans.

Caucasian hawthorn (lat. Crataegus caucasica). A shrub or small tree growing up to 2-3 meters. Sometimes, it can grow up to 7 meters. The berries are not ripe yet, as they should turn black in this species.

Hawthorn isn't only a medicinal plant. Birds in winter are very fond of eating these fruits, picked up by frost, softened, and containing a lot of vitamins🐦‍⬛

Dwarf planet Eris is ‘squishier’ than expected

University of California, Santa Cruz Professor of Planetary Sciences Francis Nimmo recently co-authored a Science Advances paper about the internal structure of the dwarf planet Eris. Eris is about the size of Pluto but around 50% farther from the sun. The discovery of Eris in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune in 2005 prompted the debate that ultimately reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet. It was an interest in Pluto that drew UC Santa Cruz researcher Francis Nimmo to study Eris. Nimmo was visiting Michael Brown—one of the discoverers of Eris—at the California Institute of Technology about six months ago and realized some of Brown’s new, unpublished data could help reveal information about the properties of Eris. The two worked on models for the next several months and published their results in a Science Advances paper. Two main pieces of information led to their results. The first important clue is that Eris and its moon, Dysnomia, always face the same way toward each other. The main, unexpected result of Nimmo and Brown’s model is that Eris is surprisingly dissipative, or “squishy”...
