Dwarf planet Eris is ‘squishier’ than expected
University of California, Santa Cruz Professor of Planetary Sciences Francis Nimmo recently co-authored a Science Advances paper about the internal structure of the dwarf planet Eris. Eris is about the size of Pluto but around 50% farther from the sun. The discovery of Eris in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune in 2005 prompted the debate that ultimately reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet. It was an interest in Pluto that drew UC Santa Cruz researcher Francis Nimmo to study Eris. Nimmo was visiting Michael Brown—one of the discoverers of Eris—at the California Institute of Technology about six months ago and realized some of Brown’s new, unpublished data could help reveal information about the properties of Eris. The two worked on models for the next several months and published their results in a Science Advances paper. Two main pieces of information led to their results. The first important clue is that Eris and its moon, Dysnomia, always face the same way toward each other. The main, unexpected result of Nimmo and Brown’s model is that Eris is surprisingly dissipative, or “squishy”...

I know this will probably be a Pluto sweep, but I ask you dear voters, if you've never really thought about the other dwarf plants in our solar system before at least consider that they are also cool and interesting. Ceres is an asteroid! Haumea is shaped like a potato! Give them a fighting chance!

For example, GA3 is sprayed onto grape vines to produce the large, seedless grapes we now routinely purchase in the grocery store (Figure 15.10A). Spectacular responses were obtained in the stem elongation of dwarf and rosette plants, particularly in genetically dwarf peas (Pisum sativum), dwarf maize (corn; Zea mays) (Figure 15.10B), and many rosette plants (Figure 15.10C).

Went looking for wildflowers while I was at the lake and I was not disappointed. The first 4 pictures are of rue anemone. I saw many thousands carpeting whole sections! What you see in those wider shots but more and more of it. Amazing. Trout lilies grew among them but are just starting to bloom. Back in the thicker woods I saw some dwarf ginseng, most of them still in bud, and in the thick moss along the road just a few bluets were opening up.
Wood anemones were only in bud. Pink lady slippers are just sprouts a few inches out of the ground. It was so good to be back among those friends again. I always wonder if I’ll make it to this time of year and now here we are! \o/

I've been growing Dwarf Sunflowers for around the past month (? I think?)
I'm not a professional gardener in any way but I'm trying my best :,3
It's been a while since I took any pictures with Sans, so I thought this was a cute lil' idea
If anyone has any tips or anything for growing plants (indoors), feel free to let me know :>

Plant of the Day
Friday 5 July 2024
The vivid pink flowers of Atocion armeria (bunch pink, dwarf French pink, limewort, Lobel's catchfly, mice pink, mock sweet william, sweet Sue, sweet William catchfly, none-so-pretty, wax plant) are popular in gardens and native to Europe. It has become established in parts of North America due to escaping cultivation.

A lil set of photos to share and also in case this is its last bloom out. I'd like to say it represents me lately attempting to vibe in spite of adversity but that'd feel like a lie since I'm sure neither of us doing too hot lately.
Hopefully it doesn't abort the buds/blooms like the previous time; like Schlumbergeras they can do it from environmental changes like light, rotating the pot, and/or moisture fluctuations.
Symbolism or not, my last dwarf Phal orchid is blooming despite how rough it's feeling, I'm at least happy to get one flowering out of it.

TIL you guys also like fish!!!! please let me introduce you to the rest of my fishy community!
first of all, these are my fish tanks:
Tumblr media
this is a 20 gallon tall tank that I will be upgrading to a 37 long next year when I find out where I’m going for residency. the 5lb pressurized cannister is a CO2 tank that I use to inject carbon dioxide into the water (on a timer)! CO2 is the limiting “nutrient” for plant growth underwater in a tank like mine (with bright light and fertilizers added), so it helps encourage plant growth and more vibrant colors in plants with red and orange tones, as well as carpeting plants.
Tumblr media
this is a 6.4 gallon tank that also has CO2 injection, and currently no fish because it is cycling (and will be for about 4 weeks). it will be her highness the betta fish’s new home once it is cycled, because she keeps murdering my shrimp in the community tank. once she is moved, I will probably get a pair of honey gouramis for the community tank.
Tumblr media
this is one of the shrimp in question! she is pregnant. (eggnant, you might say.) I love her.
Tumblr media
these are my kuhli loaches! I have 6 black and 6 banded. they are technically different species and the banded ones are much more shy. they spend a lot of time swimming circles along the glass and draping themselves over plants upside-down to make me think they are dead. they get very offended when you poke them to make sure they’re not dead.
Tumblr media
I have 8 neon tetras. they’re all fat and extremely hard to take non-blurry photos of.
Tumblr media
I also have 3 hillstream loaches, which are one of my favorite fish of all time. they’re juveniles that bred from a friend’s tank, and they look like tiny little stingrays that are frequently stuck to the side of the glass. they are aufwuchs-eaters which means they scrape algae and biofilm off the surfaces of things, but they also like sifting through sand and need sufficient protein (aka. not pure algae eaters).
here’s what they look like from the bottom:
Tumblr media
I also have snails:
Tumblr media
this is the biggest of my three nerite snails! I like nerites because they have bright colors and they don’t reproduce in fresh water. however, if you get a female (like this one), they WILL lay tiny white little sesame seed eggs everywhere, even though they can’t hatch. I used to have “pest” snails in the form of bladder snails and freshwater limpets but, uh, I have a total of 15 loaches in the tank, so. I no longer have pest snails and my loaches are all well-fed. :”)
thank u for coming to my ted talk. I love fish. I love my fish. please come talk to me about fish. I leave u with one last photo of her highness in all her glory:

Last week I saw a lot of native wildflowers but never got around to posting most of them. Here are three species I saw today: fringed polygala, dwarf ginseng, and bluets. The dwarf ginseng was about at its peak but the other two are just starting. I saw carpets of rue anemones so they get a separate post. Pretty many wood anemones too. It was good.

Some of the Dwarf neon rainbows I got. The rest are still hiding, but it looks like I have two boys and a girl here. Males have red-orange fins while females have yellow fins. I haven't sexed the rest of them yet, but I'm hoping for a good male to female ratio. Every time I get these fish, I usually end up with more males than females for whatever reason.
