recollections of the big tinky winky scare
Tumblr media
A fight breaks out in the crowd at a hockey game regarding Betty versus Veronica. Evan Dorkin likely today mildly embarrassed by his art here, and he is shuffling from an sci-fi action premise to something else -- this series at the pushed to the side because other comics work actually paid. Though the nature of comic retailing never entirely sure how --
Tumblr media
And we get to a follow up in a few panels of the hockey sequence which throws up a slur from the meathead in the crowd and so another "fighting words". The other matter that appears to animate -- even passingly -- the public regarding Archie Comics.
Tumblr media
A little bit of the territory of Chasing Amy's joke, or the ease with which I can grab panels of Jughead accidentally winning a girl's figure skating contest while in a dress and declaring -- "Yep! There he is! They call him 'Queen!" -- and it is one of two panels I know of with a crowd proclaiming "All Hail Queen Jughead!" . The problem there -- well, here is Archie being crowned "Queen".
Tumblr media
Though maybe they are feeling out character definitions a little. I do have the supposition that a culture shifted around Archie Comics and a full meaning of "committed bachelor" as euphemism and not looking just as a sound board for the GI writers to bounce "Women! Am I right?" jokes off of. Or -- late 1960s, the hipster jokes on Jughead were getting to them and they did make a succession of efforts at straight-washing him, as I have seen people so claim. And come back to me in five minutes and I will disagree with that sentence. Asexual, but presumed in two "parents talking the birds and the bees and why he is so odd" stories in the late 70s / early 80s (one a favorite of Bughead-ers because of a line where he states a platonic affection toward Betty) a late bloomer just like his dad was.
Back in 1999 there was a big brouhaha that erupted when Televangelist Jerry Falwell cited Tinky WInky as gay. He was evidently not wholly off base, just mostly so-- it is the case that the first actor in a Tinky Winky costume was let go for portraying the character in too prancey and fey a manner as the... but we are effectively dealing with ambiguously gendered Muppet infants here. Interesting case for Falwell, the bizarre contractual knot that tied The 700 Club to Rupert Murdoch's Fox Family Channel which trailed from contractual obligations off of Murdoch media and television station purchases in the mid-1980s, so the show was aired shortly after Pee Wee's Playhouse reruns -- all things considered, a more forthright example for Falwell's concern -- a children's show from a decade prior with a large adult audience carried over from its being based on a character persona for adults as a spoof of old children's television and which was laced all throughout with gay innuendo. Paul Ruben's scandal gets obliquely noted hereabouts. All you have with Teletubbies is really bright colors and playful prances. And a handbag.
I recall a comic page -- probably from one of the alt weekly cartoonists -- which ends with a mass of characters whose sexuality was oft joked about hounding about Falwell, a "Welcome to the Club". Bert and Ernie, Peppermint Patty and Marcy, Velma, and for my purpose here -- Jughead. If I knew the artist I would likely be able to find it in a collection at the public library. I was thinking it was Ruben Bolling who did this page, but I find his statement on the hullabaloo was this:

I can't get the idea of Elita-1 and Optimus getting married mid Rumble. Like, who married them? When exactly during the Rumble did this happen? How did everyone react to the most badly timed proposal ever?
If they got married around the beginning, then they would look for a priest, have the world's fastest wedding, and then run into battle the moment they stop kissing.
If it happens during battle before the Autobots arrive, then they'll have to improvise. I like to imagine that Megatron marries them, but what authority would he have for that? "By the power in me vested by...Unicron, I guess." Maybe they'll ask Hanji to do it since she's the commander. What would also be funny is that the Autobots and Council would find out about the wedding through Megatron's memories. Which would be the last thing anyone on Cybertron was expecting to find in Megatron's mind or how they expected to find out about Optimus and Elita's engagement.
But if it happens after the Autobots get there, then their already hectic day is about to get a while lot weirder. Optimus is alive, there's a world like Earth that's has giant cannibalistic humans, Megatron is there too and he's good now, Elita-1 is also alive, the end of the world is happening, and there's a wedding happening during the apocalypse. Nothing could top how crazy this day has been for everyone. There's no way everyone isn't distracted by the most bloody wedding ever.
This day would simultaneously be the best and worst day of Optimus life. Likely more worst than best, but he married the love of his life, so there's one pro at least.
Previous Episode of the Beloved Timeline
Yes! The most POTC coded marriage throwing everyone for a loop!
But it would not happen before, it would happen during the fight. Because here's the thing: Optimus and Elita have agreed to not become sparkbonded unless the war was over. Unless it was absolutely safe to do so. But if they are faced with the Rumbling, and screw it, in this timeline they have to face the Rumbling and an Eren with the powers of the Armored Titan, they know that it's certain death. One of them could very well die in this moment. And they've been separated before. They can't do it again. Even if just for a moment, they know what it's like to be of one being.
So here's how this will go:
The Rumbling gets triggered, and Megatron and Elita jump into the fight together before Optimus. The two have managed to be on the same page at the very least and know that they can't live in another world falling to ruin. So they go first, Optimus follows soon after. They get thrown off and the three of them end up having that conversation of reconciliation. Elita is obviously worried about Optimus' mindset in regards to Eren. She feels guilty that she didn't stop him in time, and she felt sympathy for him, but he caused too much damage and he refused reason. She was on the same page as Megatron: let Megatron do the deed and save humanity.
So the three go to Eren's titan form to stop him, but Optimus doesn't try to save survivors in a panic this time around. Elita is there to grab and ground him so the trio can focus on the titan threat. And just as they're about to get overwhelmed, Ultra Magnus' ship comes in to help blast the threat away and give them all some room. And not only are the Autobots surprised to have confirmation that Optimus was alive, but Hanji and Onyankopon neglected to bring up the fact that Elita was alive too! And then this is also the moment majority find out that Elita and Optimus are lovers!
Smokescreen: Optimus, Elita One is your conjunx?!
Miko: I can't believe Optimus gets laid!
Jack: MIKO!
The two teams split off like in the main timeline. Optimus and Elita do remain on the titan while Megatron is taking care of stuff on the ground with Ultra Magnus. The rest of the teams remain the same. But as everyone is fighting, Optimus is the one that asks Elita to be sparkbonded. And his comm. link is still on so everyone hears it and is either flabbergasted, excited, or annoyed as hell! They are in the middle of a fight for humanity! WHAT ARE YOU DOING OPTIMUS?! And Optimus just tells her truthfully that if this is the end, just for a moment, let's experience what it is to be truly one.
Elita is overwhelmed with emotion. She wants to focus on the fight, but she's recognizing how dangerous this is. There are high risks in being sparkbonded. If one of them dies, the other goes through tremendous torment, being severed from their other half. But the thought of being separated from Optimus regardless of if they were sparkbonded or not filled her with great fear. Just for one moment, let them experience this moment together. Elita shouts over the comm. link for someone to actually marry them. Now it's Optimus' turn to be taken aback. That takes up more time than the sparkbonding! But then:
Ultra Magnus: Now is not the time-!
Hanji: Levi will do it!
Levi: The fu-! WHY ME?!
Hanji: THIS IS PAYBACK FOR NOT TELLING ME ABOUT OPTIMUS HAVING A GIRLFRIEND! I WILL COACH YOU JUST DO IT!
Levi: Why not Megatron?!
Megatron: Elita will kill me if I do it! And I’m the least qualified!
So Levi is Barbosa in this situation!
So as they are all fighting, Levi is repeating what Hanji is saying everyone is fighting. Levi keeps on getting interrupted before he can finish what Hanji is saying and just screams at them to:
Tumblr media
Now I’m going back the fandom interpretation of the sparkbond, where both parties open their chests to reveal their sparks and let their energies mingle together. So Optimus and Elita kiss, open their chests, and officially become sparkbonded. As they do, they feel each others memories, their thoughts, their feelings. They have officially become one.
Optimus and Elita release each other, and Optimus feels a sense of urgency from Elita before she strikes a puppet titan that was behind him. And now because they are sparkbonded, the two are fighting much more in sync now. For a moment, Optimus able to forget for a moment the spark break he’s feeling and be in the moment.
Until Bumblebee, Smokescreen, Miko, Annie, and Ymir are thrown off the Founding Titan. Elita bolts and manages to grab Ymir before she plummets below, but Annie isn’t so lucky, and this time, she’s killed by the Colossal Titans below. Jean still loses his leg, forcing the remaining humans to get him out of there, leaving Optimus to help Elita and Ymir. Megatron comes in with the Star Saber and Optimus uses it to decapitate Eren’s Founding Titan, but the Titan shifter himself manages to survive by moving the source of the power to his head like in the main story line.
Now as Optimus is engaging Eren alone, Elita can feel his hesitance when it’s coming to actually killing him. She can feel guilt, doubt, sorrow. She catches a few glimpses of Optimus’ memories of him and Eren, and she finally understands why he couldn’t let Eren go. How could he? But then Eren breaks Optimus’ mask and Elita has to go in to protect Optimus while Eren is having a breakdown.
So it’s Elita vs Eren while everyone else is either trying to assist her or take care of the puppet titans. Elita demands to know why as she’s fighting Eren! Why would Eren go through all of this?! Optimus loves you! How could you?! Meanwhile, Eren is hesitant about landing a painful blow on Elita, even if he could find an opening. He saw the marriage in the Paths and the sparkbond. He has no idea what damage will happen if he hurts Elita severely. But he gets over his doubt the minute he gets overwhelmed by everyone else and launches the attack that kills Connie. He knew Connie longer that he knew Elita. He shouldn’t have qualms about killing her. Not anymore.
Eren launches a spear at Elita while she’s distracted, but Megatron jumps in and takes the hit instead of doing it for Bumblebee like in the main timeline. Elita is genuinely worried about Megatron staying alive, but feels pain in her chest and a sinking feeling in her gears. Elita turns and stairs in horror to see Optimus and Eren having stabbed each other, Optimus landing the more lethal blow via mid decapitation. Optimus kills Eren and the source of the Titan power in the same manner. And as Optimus is screaming out in sorrow, Elita gets a double whammy because she can see and feel his despair.
And then she feels emptiness as Optimus collapses from his injuries.
A few notes:
-Optimus survives. Calm down. Elita is constantly waiting on Cybertron for Optimus to wake up. She feels Optimus’ strength grow each day, but the emptiness she felt when Optimus collapsed filled her with so much terror.
-Also, Kenshin’s whole family survives. Before the Rumbling, Elita warned to royal family to go as far away from Paradis as possible until she gives the okay. So the family is far enough when Optimus stops the Rumbling, thus saving all three of them.
-The council does see footage and Megatron’s memories, but from the footage of the Rumbling is where they see Optimus and Elita sparkbond. Majority of the council is shocked, Jazz however is like:
Because he was friends with Optimus before the war, so he had an idea about Elita but wasn’t sure if the two were dating. But seeing them sparkbonded gives him the biggest vindication ever!
-The Survey Corps demand an after party once everything has calmed down since there’s still political fallout.
-Primus and the Primes celebrate Optimus and Elita’s sparkbond in the Paths.

I've come to realize from going through your blog that I know very little about the Green Lanterns (curse of being an arrowverse into a batfam fan apparently) and I really wanna know more. From both a writing perspective, because I don't want to do them dirty when using the JL for something, and also because they seem like really interesting characters?? And I've never heard most of their stories.
So what would you recommend as the entry point to getting into them?
Ough that's a difficult one to answer because with seven (eight including Alan and nine if you count Keli) Green Lanterns from Earth alone, there's a lot of different places you can start. Like I personally started reading comics just before the New 52 reboot in 2011, so everything before that I've picked up via collected TPBs or wiki summaries or sheer osmosis from the Internet lol
I'll go in reverse order, because the more recent additions have the clearest starting points. They're pretty easy to catch up on since they don't have as much history as the others.
For Jo Mullein, Far Sector (2019) serves as both introduction and solo run, and it's essential for establishing her character before tossing her into the mix with the other Green Lanterns in Geoffrey Thorne's 2021 run and Jeremy Adam's current run.
Keli Quintela (aka Teen Lantern) debuted the same year as Jo in Brian Michael Bendis's Young Justice run, but unfortunately got lost in the shuffle of juggling an ensemble cast, most of whom were already established fan favorites. So her origin story is honestly half-baked. Keli played a small part in the Thorne run but was dropped into a coma and has only just woken up. Poor girl desperately needs a good writer to give her some depth.
Simon Baz came in with the New 52 in 2011 and Jessica Cruz arrived a few years later in the Forever Evil storyline of Justice League. Core aspects of both characters were established in those comics, like Simon's cynicism and Jessica's anxiety. Personally however, I consider Sam Humphries's Green Lanterns (2016) to be where the two of them actually got character development and focus, which is why I've put the two of them together.
Kyle Rayner is where things start to get complicated, because he and the older Green Lanterns have a lot of history that predates Geoff Johns's work that, for better or worse, basically is the start of the "modern era" of GL comics. While Johns's Emotional Spectrum saga does effectively become the new foundation for the characters going forward, the first story in it is Green Lantern: Rebirth (2004). Which was written for an audience who's already familiar with the GL mythos, so it's not an ideal place to start with if you don't already know the characters.
Rather, I think the most efficient* starting point is the Emerald Twilight storyline, which begins in issue #48 of Green Lantern Volume 3 (1990). It's Kyle Rayner's origin story, so it's not hard to find collected TPBs of it, and he starts out knowing basically nothing about Green Lanterns so it's a good jumping on point for new readers.
However, Kyle's origin is inseparably tied with the fall of Hal Jordan and the Corps, so if you prefer to have more context for those characters, you might want to read Emerald Dawn I (1989) and II (1990) beforehand. A lot of the stuff from them get retconned in Johns's retelling of Hal's origins, but they're still worth a read.
With John Stewart and Guy Gardner, a lot of their characterization from the 20th century is notably different from how it is today. Part of it is the way that Geoff Johns rewrote them, part of it is how popular the JL/JLU cartoon was. This is a large reason why I'd suggest the Emotional Spectrum saga as a starting point for understanding the modern versions of these characters before going back to their older stuff from the 80s and 90s.
Hal Jordan's history makes me want to beat my head against a wall. He's been around since 1959 but so much of his early stuff is still a blur to me. Someone's probably gonna scream at me if I don't mention Hard Traveling Heroes and his friendship with Oliver Queen. A lot of his Parallax and Spectre era material doesn't take place in actual GL comics but I don't know where to read it other than Zero Hour and Final Night because those were the only TPBs available to me.
Alan Scott, being a Golden Age hero, is largely a supporting character in the JSA, though he does sometimes show up in GL stuff. He did get a miniseries recently, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern (2023), that rewrites his past as a gay man in the Cold War era.
*I say efficient because I could list a bunch of miniseries and debut issues that are historically important for each of the characters but that would make this already lengthy post at least twice as long.
Alternatively, get the 80th anniversary special from a few years back and chug that shit

wait. people are complaining because its $6 a month? nah.
EDIT: to clarify, this is merely about the price (which i understand is small to me, but due to exchange rates etc. can be more for others) not the principal of charging for a service that was already free.

So I'm seeing a bunch of posts around these days suspiciously trying to tie shows being cancelled to the recent rise in piracy due to the uptick in streaming costs.
So I thought I'd remind everyone if the time Olan Rogers was forced to pirate the third season of Final Space because Warner Brothers had cancelled and memory holed it as a tax write off. A show HE CREATED.
Tumblr media
That was back in 2022, before the hikes, before the mass wave of streaming sub losses. Don't let people fool you, it's not piracy that's killing your favorite shows. It's corps doing the same bullshit they always do.

Saw a reblog in the chain with these tags:
Tumblr media
[ID: tags from @lunarfortune stating “#piracy is ethically correct when companies won’t allow you to have the thing in the first place” /End ID]
And this. This is the nuance the piracy conversation needs; 100% this. When corporations want to disappear something as a tax write off, or to not have to support it anymore, or make it impossible to get in your region of the globe: that’s what piracy is for! Hoist the colors, let’s go! We have some things today only because others sailed those waters first and I don’t ever want to disrespect that.
People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.
