Episode 594 - Robert Pranzatelli
Author, publicist and partially involved narrator Robert Pranzatelli joins the show to celebrate his amazing new book, PILOBOLUS: A Story of Dance and Life (University Press of Florida). We talk about the origins of the legendary Pilobolus dance company, his transformational first experience seeing them in 1997, the workshops he took with them and the friendships they engendered, and the "itchy fingers" moment when he realized he had to write their history. We also get into Pilobolus' unique melding of improvisation and dance technique, the joyful challenge of describing their dance pieces on the page, the importance of capturing the time capsule of Pilobolus' '70s roots (and covering All The Affairs, along with the friendships and fallings-out), how Pilobolus was taken seriously by dance critics long after audiences flocked to them, the company's through-line in its 50+-year history and how they managed to continue the tradition of something that was based on overthrowing tradition. Plus we discuss Robert's history as a writer, how Metal Hurlant & Moebius blew his mind as a teen, how he became a book publicist at Yale University Press, his narrow-focus mode of reading, his greatest eBay score, why he got choked up while reading a text he sent Pilobolus' artistic directors after a performance, and more. Happy Birthday and welcome to our dance company Janey Bateman!!!
Janey started dancing at a young age in Northern California at South Bay Dance Center, where she trained in ballet, jazz and hip-hop. Later she went on to dance competitively in various styles of dance with Mission Dance and Performing Arts. While at MDPA, Janey also had opportunities to perform with the Oakland Ballet during their Nutcracker productions. At the age of 14, she moved to Goodyear, Arizona where she studied ballet with Linda Purdy and attended Steppin Out Dance Academy, as well as briefly dancing with her high school. After moving to Chandler, Janey continued to study ballet at the Yen Li Chen Ballet School. At this time, she was able to graduate high school a year early and begin taking dance courses at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. In 2011, Janey began dancing at Glendale Community College where she danced for three semesters on the resident dance company Verve, under director Andrea Hansen. While with Verve, she had the opportunity to perform with Center Dance Ensemble as well as at numerous other events throughout the Phoenix valley. During her time with Verve, Janey was able to learn from a handful of master guest artists including; Summer Lee Rhatigan, Alex Ketley, Emily Schoen, Joshua Blake Carter, Pilobolus, Michael Williams, Elizabeth George, Sheryl Cooper and Kenny Jezek.
Over the past few years, Janey has danced on and off while taking time to start a family. Outside of dance Janey loves spending time with her husband and 2 children.

Daydreams Are the Stuff From Which MOMIX is Made
Moses Pendleton grew up on a Vermont dairy farm and exhibited Holsteins at county fairs as a youngster. MOMIX was a feed supplement Moses fed to his cows. Pendleton appropriated the supplement’s name for the dance company he founded in 1980. He founded MOMIX after almost a decade dancing with Pilobolus, the company he co-founded in 1971. Pilobolus, incidentally, also is the name of a fungi that…

Pilobolus
I spared Graham another night of Aviva-activities and a search for a babysitter and left him home with Hannah while I went to Newark with Alice's mom to see Pilobolus. I've seen this dance company several times now, and they did repeat a few things I'd seen before (apparently a common theme of the weekend) , but I saw some really great new pieces and it was fun to interact with dance in some form, even if it was from the audience. I don't like everything this company does, but most of their pieces are really interesting and engaging to watch, but the best part of seeing them perform is that they always look like they are having so much fun, despite the absolutely insane physical tasks they are doing.

Breaking Bounds brought Lois Greenfield's pioneering work in dance photography widespread acclaim and a dedicated following. Now with Airborne, her first book in over six years, Greenfield takes us to spectacular new heights. Collaborating with some of the world's finest dancers from such illustrious dance companies as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Pilobolus, San Francisco Ballet, the Parsons Dance Company, and Ballet Tech, she captures moments of startling grace and power. In 90 duotone images, Greenfield's dancers defy gravity and push the limits of the possible. A preface takes us behind the scenes in her studio, and the photographer's own captions illuminate the challenges of making pictures that recreate the seeming effortlessness of dance. As inspiring as it is technically remarkable, this collection of incomparable images is sure to captivate dance lovers, photographers, and all who admire the beauty and strength of the human body.

Jeff Bezos goes into space. Second day: Blastoff
Jeff Bezos goes into space. Second day: Blastoff
https://theministerofcapitalism.com/blog/jeff-bezos-goes-into-space-second-day-blastoff/
Tumblr media
Just a little months ago, Blue Origin, the space company founded and funded by Jeff Bezos, didn’t think it would make history on July 20, 2021. But that happened.
It was the day Mary Wallace (Wally) Funk went into space.
Oh yeah, yeah, Jeff Bezos, founder of Blue Origin and Amazon, was also in the capsule, along with 18-year-old Oliver Daemen, his first paying customer. And Jeff’s brother, whom he called “the funniest man in space,” a praise that was answered today by a large number of experienced space reporters in West Texas for the launch. (His evidence is Podcast of 2 funny astronauts organized by Mike Massimino and Garrett Reisman.)
But while the world’s richest human space is an amazing gambit and the emergence of commercial space tourism is a milestone, Wally Funk is. Sui generis. In a story that is told and told in a thousand media this week, in 1960, Funk was part of the original Wednesday 13, a group trained to become the first female astronauts. But NASA didn’t sign into the program, and for the past 60 years, Funk, an expert pilot and diligent aviation security researcher, has become obsessed with taking the seat on the spaceship he was denied. In 2010 he signed up for a seat on board for $ 200,000 VSS by Richard Branson Unit, waiting for a Virgin Galactic suborbital flight sometime in that decade. Frustration arose as his date never approached. Then, all of a sudden, Bezos offered him a space in today’s launch of New Shepard.
Steven Levy of WIRED reports daily from Van Horn, Texas, where Jeff Bezos was one of the first passengers aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket system. You can read shipping from day one here.
As the world knew today, she was more than ready. His crewmates repeatedly claimed that the octogenarian was the most prepared and fit of the group of them, and no doubt today his energy was clear to all. Although the crew was tied to the capsule waiting for takeoff — a moment when some anxiety would be forgiven — he struggled impatiently toward Kármán’s line. “I felt so loaded,” he said later.
“We had a six-minute wait and she was wondering what it would take so long,” Bezos said. “What the hell! We’re burning daylight!”
Indeed, when New Shepard took flight, and climbed 65 miles into space, was out of his seat and performing crazy maneuvers. “Ohhh! I love it! I love it! ”She cried as she and her crew mocked what appeared to be a mutant performance of the Pilobolus dance body.
During the post-flight Press conference, owned the room from the moment she took the stage. (Given that the room was “the barn,” a facility at the base of Blue Origin large enough to hold the New Shepard rocket behind it, that said something.) Instead of strolling to her sitting like the others, he moved to the edge of his stage and stretched out his arms, a victory as bold as that of Megan Rapinoe. Every time he spoke, he would get up, hold the microphone in his face, and grow the comment. The crowd, which included journalists, friends and family of the crew, and Alan Shepard’s two daughters, ate.
