The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the recent Listeria contamination of several plant-based milks occurred in a Pickering, Ont., factory. It says the contamination happened on a "dedicated production line" at Joriki, which is a third-party beverage packaging facility used by plant-milk manufacturer Danone Canada. The agency says that the production line has been "completely disassembled while inspection at the facility is ongoing." The Public Health Agency of Canada previously confirmed 18 cases of listeriosis linked to Silk brand almond milk, coconut milk, almond-coconut milk and oat milk, as well as Great Value brand almond milk.

A city councillor in Pickering is calling herself a “modern-day slave” after council voted to dock her pay for 30 days following an investigation by the city’s integrity commissioner.

Coun. Lisa Robinson made the comment in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.

Robinson’s remarks followed a ruling by the integrity commissioner which found that her decision to identify three citizens by name in a Facebook post in which she announced that her annual Halloween event for charity would be cancelled amounted to a “bully tactic” which showed “blatant disregard for the wellbeing of others.”

Someone needs to explain to this white girl that having a month's pay docked for encouraging harassment of citizens she represents as a city councillor is not the same as fucking slavery.

Also there already is modern-day slavery in Canada, Lisa, and it's the prison system. Slavery is not you losing 30 days' pay for being an asshole.

Ducking under Liverpool Road overpass, GO Transit GP40TC 9807 trails a westbound 3-car consist of Hawkers (with cab car 9855 leading) that has just departed Pickering GO Station, and is heading through the plant at "Liverpool" on CN's Kingston Subdivision. In one scenario highlighted by the Energy Market Authority in its 2050 committee report, nuclear energy could supply about 10 per cent of Singapore’s energy needs by 2050. This could potentially form a larger proportion of Singapore’s energy mix post-2050, once nuclear tech has been proven viable, said Prof Chung.

Electricity currently accounts for about 30% of Singapore’s energy consumption. Supplying two-thirds of that from fission within five years or so would seem to be entirely practicable, when we look at examples from Pickering to Barakah. It is difficult to see how the “viability” of atomic power there needs any proving which hasn’t been accomplished, for instance, by Finland, which has about the same population and also depends heavily on fuel imports.

In addition, newer nuclear power-plant designs like SMRs are being developed, and they have the potential to be much safer than many of the traditional power plants in operation today.

Claims that small modular reactors will be safer than existing nuclear generating units, like claims that extensive new research on atomic power safety is needed, are uselessly vague and even misleading without some illumination of just what deficiencies in safety are to be alleviated. What information is available seems to leave little doubt that fission is far and away the safest means of supplying energy on an industrial scale.

While severe nuclear accidents are few and far between, nuclear power has earned itself a bad reputation after disasters such as those in Fukushima and Chernobyl.

Must we reiterate that the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami killed twenty thousand people? It is hard to understand why the damage to the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi is painted as the main story of that terrible day, except perhaps that it happened so much more slowly. The real “nuclear disaster” was the large-scale, long-lasting evacuation imposed, even though releases of radioactive materials from the stricken reactors were too small to justify (according to international standards) more than a “shelter in place” order.

We can certainly understand that the citizens of Singapore, with its small land area, would not want to risk losing any of that to something like the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, but the Pickering accident of 1983 is proof positive that there are well-established power reactor designs available now that pose no such danger, and can be located without fear even in the environs of the largest cities.

A 63-year-old man has been charged after allegedly damaging a Palestinian flag in Pickering on Tuesday.

Durham police said they were initially called to the Finch Avenue and Brock Road area around 6 p.m. for reports of an armed person.

An unknown man allegedly entered the driveway of a home, ripped a Palestinian flag off a vehicle and left a note with an offensive message.

“When the homeowner confronted the male, a struggle ensued, and the victim suffered a minor injury to his hand from the suspect’s key,” police said.

Witnesses stepped in and restrained the man before calling the police. Shortly after, officers arrived and arrested the man without incident. [...]

The mayor of Pickering and several city council members want the province to legislate stricter sanctions for the conduct of municipal officials after a councillor appeared on a controversial podcast where the host labelled her colleagues pedophiles, Nazis and fascists.

Coun. Lisa Robinson was a guest on a July 30 episode of "Live with Kevin J. Johnston" – a podcast hosted by Johnston, who has repeatedly displayed racist behaviour in recent years and previously pleaded guilty to a hate crime in Ontario in connection with anti-Muslim posts he shared online.

In a statement issued this week, Pickering's mayor and councillors called Johnston an "extremist" podcaster, saying the episode attacked the 2SLGBTQ+ community and vilified the Black Lives Matter movement.
