Jon Hamm is a good choice to play lead character JB, he does carry the film with his performance. There are other pleasant performances though, Pitobash Tripathy (Amit) stands out most from those behind Hamm. Bill Paxton (Tom), Lake Bell (Brenda), Suraj Sharma (Rinku) and Madhur Mittal (Dinesh) merit props too. It’s a feel-good premise, one that is rather nice to see play out. The score is solid, as is the cinematography. It’s a positive that they spend a decent chunk of the film actually in India, I had a inkling they might’ve skipped it but thankfully they do not – they tell the story well. It’s probably Disneyfied in ways, but who cares. It isn’t anything necessarily special, but I certainly thoroughly enjoyed this. Recommended.

I’m grateful to all the athletes for coming together to shoot this video. Such videos will inspire younger generations to take up sports in their careers.

Vasan Bala’s Indian Theatrical Debut Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota that has already lit up the festival circuit ever since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section last year. Written & Directed by Vasan and Produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies starring debutant Abhimanyu Dassani, Radhika Madan, Gulshan Devaiah, Mahesh Manjrekar and Jimit Trivedi. At TIFF  the film won the People’s Choice Award: Midnight Madness.

The film had it’s India premiere at the 2018 MAMI Film Festival where it received standing ovation.

The Meta ode to action cinema world-wide and bollywood films in the 80s and early 90s the film follows a young man (Dassani) who has a rare condition called Congenital insensitivity to pain and strikes out on a quest to vanquish his foes. Bhagyashree’s son Abhimanyu Dassani is making his acting debut with the film opposite the fresh break out star Radhika Madan (Patakha).

Those who have already seen the movie in various film festivals have given rave reviews to the film and showered it’s director and actors with immense praise.

The film is slated for it’s India theatrical release on 21st March.

Ansari’s “Master of None” Masters Diversity

Master of None is a Netflix original series created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang. It stars Aziz Ansari as a 30-something bachelor named Dev Shah who lives in New York City as an actor. This show infuses diversity in its cast as well as the conflicts that it covers. In a mere 20 episodes, it tackles relevant issues relating to relationships (Dev’s condom breaks during a one-night stand, and his partner chooses to use emergency contraception), sexuality (one of his best friends is an African-American lesbian), race (Dev complains about getting stuck with stereotypical Indian acting roles), religion (Dev’s parents are devout muslims and Dev fakes his own beliefs to please them), and more. Like this Multicultural America course, Master of None delves deeply into the history of minorities in the United States. Early in season one, there is an episode where Dev and his Taiwanese friend Brian realize they should better appreciate the sacrifices their immigrant parents made to live in America. This episode involves several flashbacks to life in India, proving that the program values narrative and authenticity over superficial humor.

(One of my favorite episodes was when Dev developed a crush on a Black British woman named Sara while in Italy. As superficial as it is, not often do you see two dark-skinned characters in a relationship. Often, the most high-profile “diverse” relationships onscreen are between a White person and a person of color. That’s why I was slightly disappointed when Sara was only on the show for one episode! And then Dev fell in love with an Italian girl...sigh.)

This semester, we reviewed Deborah Willis's introduction to "Picturing Us: African American Identity in Photography," which explained how, generally, African Americans are portrayed differently (often negatively) by photographers of a different ethnicity. The African American experience is most comprehensively and realistically depicted by those artists who have lived it. Similarly, Master of None is a very organic creation, handled tenderly by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang who base many instances in the show from their own experiences, many of which relate to their ethnicities (Indian and Taiwanese, respectively). In fact, Alan Yang’s speech at the Emmy’s was about the importance of incorporating representation for every ethnicity in television. (Read the article here). In the New York Times article “Asian American Actors are Fighting for Visibility. They Will Not Be Ignored,” Ansari states “I’ve been watching characters with middle-aged white-guy problems since I was a small Indian boy.” Only by creating his own TV show was he able to combat the film and television industry’s lack of representation.

This issue also makes an appearance in Master of None: Dev and another Indian man (Ravi Patel) audition for a sitcom, but the director decides that there can only be one Indian character, otherwise it becomes a "show about Indians." This opens up a discussion about "how ethnic is too ethnic?" Does a film or TV show become "about" a certain ethnicity when two or more people of that ethnicity are present (thinking about Fresh Off the Boat which is about a family of Chinese-Americans). Does a show arguably "about" Mexicans or "about" Indians alienate their audience of non-Mexicans or non-Indians? But, on the other hand, did any of the hundreds/thousands of movies and TV shows with all/nearly all White cast members alienate other ethnicities? In most cases, no. In any case, ethnicity is not the only element to be explored in a film or TV show. There are other issues that audiences of any background can relate to. And this statement is especially true for Master of None.

There are obvious intentions by this show's creators to open up the audience to real-world issues, and although it's marketed as a romantic-comedy, Master of None is not just centered around Dev's struggling romantic life. The show also takes its time with establishing New York as a character, in all its multicultural, diverse glory. In week one, we discussed that The Defiant Ones and The Shawshank Redemption left several people and issues out of their narratives: Women, LTBGQ+ people, and other racial and ethnic groups besides white European American and African-American people were disregarded in the films' metaphorical conclusion that transcending race will allow Americans to co-exist. In contrast, Master of None reveals a wide variety of characters in every episode. In fact, one episode is completely dedicated to the intersecting lives of strangers in New York City. This episode follows a doorman played by Kevin Harts (an African-American/Native-American/Caucasian), a deaf African-American woman, and an African taxi driver and his roommates. Ansari's character, Dev, only has 28 seconds of screentime, again demonstrating the show's lack of concern for giving audiences what they want over what the producers think audiences need. And what we need is a wider view of the world, a new perspective on life. And this is what Master of None gives us, and hopefully will continue giving us in seasons to come.

I have heard that on these blogs, you are supposed to share some of your story. My story began in my small hometown of Pondicherry, India. I was born to the owner of the local zoo, my father Santosh Patel, and his beautiful wife Gita Patel, my mother. I was not alone, I also had an older brother, Ravi Patel. May they all rest in peace. I lost them to a shipwreck, one that left me on a small lifeboat with a royal Bengal tiger as company for 227 days. This event shaped my entire life, and led me to where I am today, in a humble home in Scarborough, Canada.

Relationship Status

I am happily married, to a beautiful intelligent woman named Meena Patel. She is a pharmacist here in Canada, and one of the greatest joys in my life, though I know I should express it more. I am hoping this blog will allow me to open more, so I can truly show those I love how much I appreciate them. We have two wonderful children, my young daughter Usha, and my son Nikhil, who has a passion for baseball.

Animal Care and Conservation - Having grown up in a zoo, I’ve seen the wonders that zoos can do in conserving endangered species. From the time I was a young child I have always had a strong passion for animals. Then I spent 227 days on a boat with the only company being an animal, my only food being animals, and I know now that the only reason I am alive is because of animals. One of my favorite parts of an Indian wedding is all of the fun that is celebrated before the actual wedding and reception event. In my eyes, it is the pre-ceremony events that really gets the crowd moving and grooving! Perhaps Maharani Pooja loves the pre-gaming more than I do, because her Indian wedding was full of charming moments! On the forefront was Krish Photography who brings us all the magical moments we are about to share. Our couple today are the epitome of childhood sweethearts, meeting at the age of 13. The duo continued their fairy tale relationship with a surprise proposal from Maharaja Ravi on top of Stone Mountain; forever sealing their very own eternal bliss.
