Dental Anxiety? How a Sedation Dentist Can Be Your Hero
Dreading the dentist's chair? You're not alone. Millions of people experience dental anxiety, a fear that can range from mild apprehension to full-blown panic attacks. This anxiety often leads individuals to neglect their oral health altogether, putting them at risk of serious dental problems. But there's good news! Sedation dentistry offers a safe and effective solution, transforming your dental experience from stressful to serene.
Understanding Dental Anxiety: Beyond the Drill
Dental anxiety manifests in various ways, impacting people differently. Here are some common triggers:
Fear of Pain: The thought of needles, drills, or potential discomfort can be very unsettling.
Loss of Control: Feeling vulnerable while lying in the dentist's chair can be a major source of anxiety for some.
Claustrophobia: The close proximity of dental equipment can trigger claustrophobic feelings.
Past Experiences: Negative experiences at the dentist in the past can leave a lasting fear.
The Cost of Untreated Dental Anxiety
Ignoring dental anxiety can have significant consequences for your oral health:
Neglected Oral Hygiene: Avoiding dental appointments due to anxiety allows plaque and tartar to build up, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss.
Painful Consequences: Untreated dental problems can lead to pain, discomfort, and even infection.
Reduced Self-Esteem: Missing teeth or dental problems can negatively impact self-esteem and confidence in social situations.
Social Withdrawal: People with dental anxiety might avoid social situations due to concerns about their smile.
Sedation Dentistry: Your Path to a Relaxed Smile
Fortunately, you don't have to let dental anxiety control your oral health. Sedation dentistry offers a safe and effective way to manage your nerves and receive the dental treatment you need. Here's how it works:
Variety of Options: Depending on the severity of your anxiety and the type of procedure, various levels of sedation are available. These options range from nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") to moderate sedation administered via IV.
Reduced Anxiety: Sedation helps you relax and feel calmer throughout the procedure.
Pain Management: In some cases, sedation can also help manage any discomfort you might experience during treatment.
Positive Experience: Overall, sedation dentistry allows you to have a more comfortable and positive dental experience.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Sedation dentistry, when administered by a qualified dentist or anesthesiologist, is a safe and well-established practice. Here's what ensures your safety:
Comprehensive Evaluation: Prior to recommending sedation, your dentist will conduct a thorough medical and dental history to determine if sedation is the right option for you.
Experienced Professionals: Sedation dentistry will be performed by a dentist or anesthesiologist experienced in monitoring patients under sedation.
Constant Monitoring: Your vital signs will be closely monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and well-being.
Recovery Time: Depending on the level of sedation used, you might need a recovery period before driving or resuming regular activities.
Finding Your Perfect Match: Choosing a Sedation Dentist
Not all dentists offer sedation dentistry. Here's how to find a dentist who can help:
Ask Your Current Dentist: Your regular dentist might be able to refer you to a qualified sedation dentist in Phoenix or your local area.
Search Online: Look for dentists in your area who advertise sedation dentistry services. Sedation dentistry can be a good starting point for your search.
Read Reviews: Checking online reviews can give you insights into other patients' experiences with sedation dentistry.
Schedule a Consultation: Meet with the dentist to discuss your anxiety, sedation options, and your treatment needs.
Taking Control of Your Smile: A Conversation with Your Dentist
If dental anxiety has been keeping you away from the dentist, it's time to have an open and honest conversation with your dental professional. Here's how to initiate the dialogue:
Express Your Concerns: Let your dentist know about your dental anxiety and your interest in sedation options.
Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask about the different types of sedation offered and the process involved.
Discuss Your Needs: Talk to your dentist about any specific anxieties you have regarding dental procedures.
Collaborative Approach: Together, you can create a personalized plan that addresses your needs and ensures a comfortable dental experience.
Conclusion
By taking advantage of sedation dentistry, you can finally overcome your dental anxiety and receive the care you need to maintain optimal oral health. In a relaxed and comfortable setting, you can achieve the healthy, confident smile you deserve. Don't let dental anxiety stand in your way of achieving a brighter, healthier you. Talk to your Phoenix dentist today and explore the possibilities of sedation dentistry. Remember, a comfortable and anxiety-free dental experience is just a conversation away!

My Care Kit
I've hesitated posting about this because I know it's not hard for this to get to the wrong side of the site - because even though there's been an awesome shift in the conversation about how care can look at different levels of functioning, we're still not really there yet. So if you're rude in the comments, tags, or reblogs, expect to blocked. Cause I just don't have it in me.
With that out of the way, I wanted to talk about what's been allowing me to be infinitely more regular with skincare, grooming, and to a lesser degree dental routines - my care kit.
It's not mindblowing or original. I basically just took all the stuff I was storing in the bathroom and store it in my bedroom to use there. I'm sure plenty of people have figured this out before me but it took me a minute to realize how helpful this is.
So what's in here?
Skincare
CeraVe AM Moisturizer
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid
Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum
CereVe "in the Tub" - Moisturizing Cream
Differin Gel*
*Differing Gel is something I only use when I take this kit to the bathroom as it's important to wash your hands after using a retinol
"But you're supposed to use it on wet skin!" - yeah I know. I keep a small spray bottle in here to wet my skin before applying
"But that can mold!" - yeah I know. It's a small one and I use it up in a few days before I need to refill it. I try to clean it regularly too.
But ultimately done is better than none. I accept some risk in order to make this accessible to me. My skin is no longer so dry it's cracking and getting infected. Thank god.
Grooming
Native Deodorant - Black Oak + Amber
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab & Sphere and Sundry - Her Eyes That Were Full of Shining Perfume Oil
Kat Von D - Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in "Witches"
Besame Cosmetics - Black Cake Mascara
Tweezerman Tweezers
I don't use all of this all of the time but I appreciate having the option. Sometimes you know you're not getting out of bed but you'd like to look nice. Sometimes looking nice helps you get out of bed.
Not pictured but I keep a small mirror on my shelf near where I store this bag. I use that for make up and tweezing. When tweezing, I wipe the edges off with a tissue then toss it the next time I get up. I also rinse it the next time I use it at the sink. Not perfect, I know. But it helps.
I do have a facial razor in here, but I only use that at the sink at the moment. I also want to swap from disposable to reusable soon. But baby steps and all that.
Dental
And now for the part that will horrify some people and be saving grace to others.
Disposable pre-pasted toothbrushes
Sea to Summit Collapsible Cup with Lid
I won't be accepting comments on this. It's personal and I hesitated to share this because I know it's polarizing. But I know there's something like me out there for whom this would help a ton.
I have a horrible reaction to most toothpastes. I'm talking brush my teeth for 2 minutes, shitting on the toilet for multiple hours afterwards bad. It is miserable and makes me terrified to brush my teeth. I also have just always struggled with it and been shamed a lot for it.
These dang pre-pasted toothbrushes for some reason I do not react to. Idk if it's the fact I toss them after or the paste they're using somehow doesn't have the thing I'm reacting to but I can finally brush my teeth without unbearable cramps afterward.
I recommend them for people who are depressed, bedbound, or otherwise can't get to the sink to brush their teeth though. For me it falls into the camp of medical waste - which no one should be shaming anyone for - if it's this or nothing.
The collapsible cup will also put some people off. What I do is spit into the cup, cap it, then empty and clean it whenever I get up next. Gross? Maybe. But it works. I've not had issues with smell this way and since it's capped, there's no way to spill it if I lose my balance or accidentally kick it.
Miscellaneous
Holotaco Nail Kit
Badger Sleep Balm
The nail kit was a gift and boy oh boy is it nice. You don't need this one but something like this is a godsend. It is so nice to be able to clip nails back, file them, and clean them up without needing to like make a session of it in the bathroom. I'm considering adding my fav base coat, nail polish, and top coat so I can more easily paint them too.
Badger Sleep Balm has become a part of how I wind down and also how I help recover from panic attacks. I've taught myself some basics of self massage and use this to make it go a little easier. I really recommend learning. There are some good videos on youtube and I get fewer cricks in my neck now.
Conclusion
I really hope this helps someone out. Maybe this doesn't suit your particular use case but I hope it serves as an example that sometimes you're not keeping your desired routines because the environment needs a redesign and sometimes that requires thinking outside the box a little.

✩࿐࿔ brush your frickin' teeth. [new 3/25]

when you're exerting all your energy trying to negotiate life, sometimes the little shit falls by the wayside. rocket's looking out for you and your dental hygiene though, cupcake. p.s. get yourself some emergency mouthwash.
precious nonnie, i wrote this straight out of my heart with a lot of love, truly. i really, really hope things get better for you soon. you're absolutely not alone. (pro tip from someone who knows: mouthwash when you can't brush up can be a lifesaver.) sending you my very best blessings for better days, and hugs if you want them.
You’re lying in your narrow bed, staring out the window. The daytime lights of Knowhere have dimmed hours ago, but you haven’t moved — sprawled quietly, letting the mild breeze of the skull’s ventilation system flutter your thin curtains and stroke cool fingers against your face. You stare out at the velvety-dark inside of the dome and the strings of tiny plasma orbs, sparkling like strands of distant moons tethering your roof to the one across the street. There aren’t many views of the deep-space sky from Knowhere — not unless you’re on the observation deck — but the countless paper lanterns, starry tin-smithed lamps, and stringed lights almost make up for it. You sigh listlessly. At least, you think, Rocket’s turned the music on. He’s got some old song crooning away on the speakers in the streets — the kind that will lull the Star Kids to sleep and mellow out whatever chaos is currently happening at the poker tables at Mantlo’s. Underneath the notes, you listen to the wash of low conversation — a soft crush of mumbled half-words you can’t hear from your apartment — and the occasional shout of laughter, bright and clear. You let your eyelids drift closed, and you wonder if you could fall asleep like this. And then there’s a knock at the door.

it took me over nine months to finish ace attorney 5 but here we are with the lawyer rankings (of whose file clerk I'd rather be)
athena: once again I draw the line at working for a teenager, and also I would be so uncomfortable if she ever tried to tell me what emotion she knew I was feeling. cannot stress how miserable that would be for me, and also a discrimination lawsuit waiting to happen. also, emotions-based lawyering doesn't seem likely to produce as much paperwork as I would like, since that leaves me with less to do. 2/10, of course there's discord in my heart I'm at work leave me alone.
apollo: if he started his own firm I would work for him in a heartbeat but unfortunately him leaving and then coming back to the wright anything agency is not great in terms of like, job security for his hypothetical file clerk. like, do I get laid off when he leaves and then brought back when he returns a few days later? I want a little more stability than that, sorry. 7/10, he would at least help get my benefits paperwork sorted out and I appreciate that in a boss.
phoenix: Idk has he learned how to pay his staff yet because judging by the repetition of the ending bit abt how he doesn't want to buy them noodles the answer seems to be no. "your bonus this year is a pizza party" kind of boss except you have to buy your own pizza. sure he's learned how to be a more supportive mentor to athena than he was to apollo but my boss's faith in me will not pay my rent. 3/10, phoenix you're dating the chief prosecutor surely you can do better than this.
edgeworth: he's gotten his shit together in a way that makes me very proud of him, and he does seem to care abt his employees. also he looks good in those glasses. 8/10, if he can get blackquill's conviction overturned he can make sure I have dental insurance.
payne: the thing about payne is that he doesn't listen to the things people tell him and he doesn't seem to learn anything ever, and that's a very frustrating quality in a boss. the kind of boss that tells you to do something but explains it badly and when you ask a clarifying question he responds with even more incomprehensible bullshit. half of your email responses to him are just copying and pasting things you've already told him. 2/10, every interaction with him is a sisyphean nightmare.
blackquill: trying to process the ethics of an imprisoned prosecutor (they make him wear a shock collar in court jesus fucking christ) makes my brain short-circuit but that's also just the ace attorney experience. other than that he seems like a decent boss, as long as you can overlook some of his uh dramatic tendencies and also as long as he doesn't sic taka on you. but I think if you had a good rapport with him it would be fine, even if it would probably mean a lot of transcribing bc presumably he'd have to hand-write anything he wants to file with the court and send them to you via bird and then you'd have to type them up and actually submit them. 6/10, honestly he gains several points just because I want to pet taka.
professor means: he's so smug, is the thing. he's just the smuggest man and he treats his students like idiots so I can't imagine he'd be any better and less condescending to his employees. he's probably looking for every excuse to be like "gotcha! you made one (1) minor error (that isn't even actually an error, it's just that he personally would have done it differently" and because everything has to be a Teaching Moment he'll bring it up in department meetings and also use you as an example in his classes. 3/10, he gains a few points for his awareness that the legal system is fucked up and rigged in favor of the prosecution and then loses most of those points for being a condescending asshole.
klavier: he would be fine probably. presumably his office is in the same state as it was in aa4, which is not ideal, as it stresses me out when filing cabinets are so full/disorganized that you can't close the drawers. on the other hand maybe that was just because he hadn't gotten around to dealing with it yet and he's not living like that on purpose and he would appreciate a file clerk to help him get his shit together. 7/10, just don't call me fraulein and we'll be fine.
( aa1 | aa2 | aa3 | aa4 | aai | dgs1 | dgs2 )
#this is the first time i've done one of these while actively jobsearching lol#however these rankings are still my fun joke answers and not my real actual answers#bc the real answers for all of the prosecutors (even edgeworth) would be no on principle#but that would get repetitive to read so. here we are#pretend i'm giving these rankings as like. my aa-sona who isn't an abolitionist bc no one in ace attorney is#dreaming.txt#ace attorney
