"Phineas and Ferb Get Busted!" was the Most Pointless Episode of Phineas and Ferb
No. Really.
It's supposed to be a "what-if" situation to show why we shouldn't necessarily ROOT for Candace's endeavors, and yet Dan and Swampy have made it clear that Linda would NEVER actually do that to Phineas or Ferb. So there was literally no point in that episode existing because that "what-if" isn't even possible.
Tumblr media
By all accounts, this episode should not exist and honestly just raises more questions than it answers. And I'm not just saying this because this episode rubs me the wrong way in general, the episode even has the whole thing take place in a dream, so even the creators knew this was a pointless story. And yeah, PnF is episodic, not all the episodes have a point, but they also feel like they BELONG within the series - but this one, I feel like we could've done well without. It exists purely to entice the curiosity of the fans and nothing else, and it doesn't even do it right because this isn't even a scenario that would realistically happen outside a dream within a dream.
Now you could argue that, perhaps, this is what CANDACE might've thought would happen if Phineas and Ferb got busted...but you'd be wrong! Because this dream was in PERRY'S dream! NOT Candace's! So it's not even introspection into Candace's psyche or her motivations or what her thought process was in all of this, the only noteworthy thing we get is Perry's fear of losing his owners, which you could've put in ANY OTHER EPISODE and it would've worked just as well - not to mention that it was a part of his character that we just ASSUMED he was already afraid of given it was part of his goal not to be discovered.
So in the end, this episode shouldn't have existed. I'm not saying that anyone is wrong for enjoying it, and perhaps that itself is enough to justify its existence, but it really shouldn't have existed.

Dan Povenmire, co-creator of Phineas and Ferb and the voice of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, just did a zoom call for fans, and this is a link to it on Google Drive and a link to it on YouTube.
Here’s a brief overlay brought to you by my incessant live blogging, and because I was speed typing on my phone, I can guarantee not everything made the cut. If you’re interested in hearing Dan talk about growing up an artist and becoming an animator and trying to pitch Phineas and Ferb and working on the show and movies, I would definitely suggest checking out the full 75 minute video. The highlights from the call are below the cut.
They added Doof and Perry because they liked chase scenes. They realized fairly quickly that more than not, the pair led to good comedy, and found it much more interesting to see how their relationship developed. He also says that they are "the most important person to each other” and “they’re really good friends.”
They wrote the Perry theme song in an hour between meetings with Disney
They decided during the pilot that they weren't going to try to get comedy from the characters saying mean things to each other. Even Doofenshmirtz wasn't motivated by evil, he just wanted to get the attention he didn't get at home.
Doof’s backstories were not Dan and Swampy's idea. They were from Jon Barry and Chris Hendrick, who [itched the lawn gnome backstory. It was long and compliated and Dan and Swampy couldn’t stop laughing. They also provided the "it all started on the day of my birth” one the next day.
making the 2D movie while making the movie was the busiest Dan says he has ever been, and that's not even counting the PnF Take Two and Doof's web show and all the interviews. Basically, 2010ish was a very busy time in the Dwampyverse.
They decided to give each pair of writers their own section of an outline to work on, and each pair got to make up the dialogue and jokes based on it. it works well for the show, but writers kept going on their own tangents and the movie ended up like 6 hours long. Dan and Kyle Menke had to redraw 80% of the show because they had to cut gags out and rewrite it so it was still funny. Note: in the new movie, they did the opposite — they wrote a script and told the board artists that they could put brief gags in but nothing too long
He thinks the show became one of the most beloved shows bc it was innocent and the adult humor wasn't dirty so the whole family could watch it together. He also said the songs at the closest thing you get to immortality in a show. Those combined made the show as big of a hit as it was, and hopefully those things will get older people to watch the movie.
His advice if you want to follow in his footsteps are to draw (and suggest you check out Cartoon Animation by Preston Blaire and How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee) and to know that these jobs are out there
One of his favorite gags in PnF are the silent moments where something big happens and no one reacts (like something big fell in an early episode and crashed next to Phineas and co and at first they were all shocked but Dan changed it to them just kinda looking at it for a moment with no emotion)
Q: Did you ever want to quit what you were going?
A: "I don't really... do... anything else..."
He finished his new pilot today (July 2nd, 2020) and the movie is due tomorrow.
He would love to do more PnF and there's been talks of another PnF movie
He would love to do more Milo Murphy's Law, but it never got huge ratings and Disney's not too big on it but if people start watching it on Disney+ they might get to keep doing it. They did that with Family Guy, and it could happen to MML too.
The movie feels like old Phineas and Ferb and there are a lot of great songs!
And now, the Q&A (in which he draws random characters are he talks)
How was the process of kicking the voices?
It was sometime easy but sometimes very difficult. For Phineas, they listened to maybe a thousand people. they actually recorded someone but they put it to animation and it didn't really work. He knew as soon as he heard Vincent that he loved him. They literally recasted the lead (Vincent) the day before they had to deliver the pilot.
He knew immediately that he liked Alison Stoner. She was the second Isabella he heard, and he listened to maybe 50 others afterwards, but he knew he wanted Alison Stoner
They decided on a different Candace and they sent it to the head of the channel and the guy asked if he heard Ashley Tisdale. He told Dan to have her come in and give her direction and Dan was hesitant bc he had one that he liked but he was lowkey forced to bring her in. It was his only audition that day, and after his big block of text Dan gave her like 20 notes and she wrote the notes on the big block of text and she did it again and it was perfect and obviously Candace (but he feels bad for the actress that was almost Candace bc she'll never know how close she was)
What was the most impactful episode you worked on?
Either the last (hard to watch w/o crying) or three moments that made himcey while doing them: the end of Summer Belongs To You when Phineas gives up trying to get off the island and decides to watch the sunset with Isabella which was what she always wanted and she exploded and talked him back up onto being the person he is even tho it's a sacrifice on her behalf. He later says he started crying while pitching to his wife the AYA scene of Phinabella getting together.
Do you regret any episodes?
There are some he likes more and some he likes less but he doesn't regret any of them. He was a little disappointed in an early episode without a sing but he watched it alter and decided it was actually pretty decent. None of them make him cringe or wonder why they did that.
How has social media impacted PnF?
He recently got on TikTok and found out that's where all the PnF fans are. He was thrilled to see the response everything was getting and it made him feel good about everything he accomplished. The fact that this generation knows what an aglet is is his biggest accomplishment in pop culture.
Favorite part of working on the show/movie
He likes editing, but writing the songs is the most fun bc it feels the least like work
Who is Ferb's mom?
Never established or really thought about Ferb's mom or Phineas's dad AND IT'S NOT DOOFENSHMIRTZ THEY MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THAT TO BE TRUE STOP ASKING and Phineas and Candace are full brother and sister. The bio parents aren't interesting to them bc the family already has a mom and dad and the other ones are just out of the picture and not important.
Will there be a new character in the movie?
Super Super Big Doctor (and Disney keeps telling him what he can and can't talk about)
Are there any secrets or theories that he can tell them?
The freaking creepy pasta about schitzophrenic Candace IS NOT TRUE Phineas and Ferb do exist and are alive. There's also a theory that Candace is not based on the diary of a teen girl in Russia who killed herself, and that's not true either. He genuinely thinks they are really freaking stupid theories and they make no sense at all.
Who is your favorite guest star?
Writing a song with Slash from Guns n Roses was really cool. He also liked working with Ben Stiller, Christian Slater the delivery guy (he called and said he'd do any part in MML so they wrote him a role), Jack McBrayer (Irving/Fix It Felix), Wayne Brady (co-wrote In The Empire)
What is the motivation of Candace to bust the boys?
He's not trying to hurt them. She doesn't dislike them. She gets irritated but she's really just looking for fairness. If she built a rollercoaster in the backyard, she'd get in trouble, so they should get in trouble, too.
How did you think about hot to end the show?
Disney was starting to cool off on PnF. The merch wave had plateaued. Dan and Swampy had the next two years in the show already made, but Disney wouldn't pick up another season until they finished airing that season. They'd have to restaff for a new season and they didn't like that idea, so they turned one of their hour long specials into the finale. He wanted to be able to say goodbye and thank the fans.

83. "Another sleepless night, huh?"
Hey there here I bring you a request I got from a guest. I'm sorry it took me a lot of time to get this done, but here it is, and I hope you'll all enjoy it :)
******************************
Lawrence rolled on his bed with a soft moan. He smiled stretching out his arm with the idea of hug his wife. But he was surprised when all what he reached was an empty space instead of his lovely Linda.
Slowly, the man opened his eyes and saw how effectively, his wife wasn’t there. He sighed closing his eyes and shook his head.
“Here we go again…”
With a tired sigh, Lawrence stood up and took his dressing gown. He had an idea of where his wife was. Walking slowly, letting his eyes to adapt to the darkness, Lawrence walked out of his room and through the corridor direct to the stairs. He walked down and walked directly to the living room. There he found her.
Linda was standing – covered with her own dressing gown – next to the transparent sliding door that allowed to go to the garden. She was looking at the tree they had there with a sad expression.
“Poor Linda…”
Lawrence approached to his wife and kindly put a hand on her shoulder to let her know he was there, at her side, as he would always be.
“Another sleepless night, huh?”
Linda didn’t look at him, her eyes kept looking the empty garden with a terrible sad expression.
“I miss them Lawrence…”
The man looked at his wife with a sad expression. He knew it was that. Since Candace, Phineas and Ferb… well, it had been hard for Linda this big change in their lives.
“I know Honey. But… we knew this would happen… someday.”
Linda shook her head. She knew what her husband said was true, but still… it was too much painful… it felt like a thorn digging into her heart.
“It happened to much fast. I wish they would be still here.” Linda muttered with tears in her eyes. Just seeing this picture, instantly Lawrence hurried to hug his wife. He felt this is what most she needed right now.
“Yes Linda, me too… but our kids grow up… they have all their own families now…” Lawrence paused “Candace with Jeremy, and she’s pregnant of her first child. Do you remember what names had she chosen for them?”
Linda let out a soft laugh remembering how her oldest daughter always talked about the names she would put to her children.
“Yes… Xavier if she had a boy or Amanda if she had a girl.”
Lawrence smiled at his wife. It seemed his words to her were working, but he also knew it wasn’t enough, he must continue talking to her in order to cheer her up. That’s what husbands are there for – among a lot of other things of course.
“Yes, and soon she’ll find out if our first grandchildren will be a boy or a girl.”
Linda closed her eyes and let her husband to embrace her. She felt safe and sound with him… Linda thought on what her husband had just told her.
“Our first grandchildren…” she said almost in a whisper “Oh Lawrence, it seems it was yesterday when she called me every day, telling all the crazy things Phineas and Ferb apparently always build. She was just a teen trying to get her brothers busted.”
Lawrence smiled slightly. He remembered that, and he also remembered to have seen some of those… ‘crazy things’ his sons did. But he honestly thought it wasn’t something bad, quite opposite, Phineas and Ferb had an incredible imagination, like when they turned their family car into a Monster track to help Candace to learn to drive. They did it to help their sister. And candace… Lawrence had been always amused how his daughter was able to talk hours and hours, how could she always have the energy to literally took Linda from wherever she was and take her back home just to ‘show her what Phineas and Ferb had done.
“Yes, she had always been a very energic girl, and now… she’s going to be mom!” Lawrence sounded genuinely proud of Candace. Ans so he was with his two boys “And what to say about Phineas and Ferb? Oh Phineas… it took him a lot of time, but he finally realized Isabella was in love of him and he also was in love with her, and now they both are just married couple.”
“Yes… Phineas has a strong imagination, but it seems sometimes it’s hard from him to realize the most evident things.” Agreed Linda with a soft smile in her face.
“And what to say of Ferb? He’s like my father.” Lawrence was giggling while he said that.
“What do you mean?” Linda separated from her husband and looked at him with an amused expression. She sounded genuinely confused, and Lawrence couldn’t blame her. He cleared his throat.
“Oh, you know, my father didn’t care to wait – even if that meant to wait almost an eternity – to know the perfect girl who will be his wife.” He paused “Ferb is like him. He doesn’t care if he lives alone waiting for the one he’ll marry with,”
“But… to live alone… it would have been better for him to live here with us.” Tried to reason Linda. It was better to live in company of those you love than live completely alone “Who knows what is he doing living on his own?”
“Linda… you know Ferb has always been a very independent person.” Explained the man with glasses. “He decided to leave so we could have our privacy. Also, he wanted to learn to solve his own issues, even if I’m pretty sure he already knows how to solve them.”
Linda’s sad expression came back, as she looked again to the empty garden where her kids along with their friend played so many times. It was hard to see now this garden every day and see there was no kid there playing. Linda sniffed. She knew what her husband was saying was true, but it didn’t make it less painful. To have three extraordinary children living with them, and now… they had none left. They were… alone.
“Honey… I know it’s hard to live alone after years of having lived all together,” said Lawrence with the kindest voice he could put “but… things aren’t the same forever. Also… you know… our kids promised to visit us whenever they could.” He smiled at his wife to prove this was a reason for hope and to try to be happy “Give them a chance to do it, they’ll come, you’ll see.”
“I hope you’re right.” Said Linda sniffing again. Lawrence could do nothing else than hug his wife one more time.
“Of course, I am! Our kids won’t abandon us.” He kissed her on her forehead. “I think it’s time to go to bed. You’ll see how tomorrow you’ll see things in a different way.”
“Yes… let’s come back to sleep.”
Linda nodded and both headed to their room. Again, on their bed, Linda looked at her husband with a kind smile. He had his eyes closed and couldn’t see she was watching at him.
“Lawrence?”
“Yes, Honey?” Lawrence opened his eyes and looked at his wife.
“Thank you.”
Lawrence smiled kindly at her
“You’re welcome Linda, you can always count on me.”

Phineas and Ferb and Milo Murphy’s Law take place in the same universe as one another and the characters of the two shows even explicitly live in the same town
In every episode of Phineas and Ferb, Doofenshmirtz attempts to take over the tri-state area and Candace attempts to bust Phineas and Ferb, and every time the universe seems to go out of its way to make sure that they both repeatedly fail. Even in the series finale when they get a literal do-over button that they can use to correct their mistakes, they STILL fail over and over, and in the movie Candace is shown to be convinced that there’s a mysterious force actively working against her attempts to bust her brothers
Milo’s whole thing is that he’s cursed with Murphy’s Law and always has bad luck, hence the title of his show
Milo’s bad luck is usually only shown affecting him and those within direct proximity of him, however, it can also have a domino effect where his bad luck creates a chain reaction that affects the other characters even if they aren’t anywhere near him at the time, as exemplified by this scene from the episode Cast Party
In addition, the crossover between the two shows reveals that Phineas and Ferb have positive probability ions, the opposite of Milo’s negative probability ions, which is why things always tend to work out for them
Also when Milo explains Murphy’s Law to Doofenshmirtz in said crossover, he replies with “That’s a law? I’ve had that my whole life!”
Conclusion: Murphy’s Law is the mysterious force that Candace believes is causing her repeated failures, as the chain reactions that it creates are exactly what causes things to continuously go conveniently and improbably wrong for both Candace and Doofenshmirtz every day, however since Phineas and Ferb have positive probability ions that essentially act as a counterbalance to Murphy’s Law, this basically makes them immune to it, hence why their inventions always disappear just before their mom sees them. This also explains why the events that ruin Doofenshmirtz’s plan almost always coincide with the events that remove Phineas and Ferb’s inventions, because they’re part of the same chain reaction, they just don’t know it. Also I need to go to bed.

My apologies, but anon is confused: You implied in strikethrough text that the Phineas and Ferb show was hiding Linda being an awful mother, unlike The Owl House which didn't hide how awful Odalia is. And you also said in another post that you want to slap Linda hard. My question is, what behavior of Linda's is the issue? Admittedly it's been a while since I watched Phineas and Ferb, but all I remember Linda doing is not believing Candace about P&F's inventions since the inventions disappear.
It's totally fine that you are - chances are most people are gonna be confused with my disdain for Linda. On surface level, she's a nice mom - has a good social life, bakes for her kids, all that good mom stuff. And it's one hundred percent okay to disagree with me, because my thoughts on her are opinion and nothing more.
But...when a show tries to portray a character as being "good", and have characters treat her like she IS good, but then she goes around doing incredibly questionable things, it makes me question their stance on morality. The SHOW is trying to make LINDA out to be way better than she is - that she is deserving of a lot of things. And that makes me notice all the more when she does things like talk crap about her daughter, to friends and to strangers alike, whether or not Candace is in the room.
Mind you, Linda is not the WORST mom - I'm not even trying to say she's abusive. Because she's not. She very clearly has a good relationship with her kids...but...a "great mom" wouldn't be absent whenever Phineas and Ferb built stuff, or be out of the loop. Whether we like it or not, she's incredibly irresponsible; there's no other way around it. When literally EVERYONE ELSE in town knows what your kids are doing but you, you're doing something incredibly wrong.
And it wouldn't be so bad if Linda didn't rub salt into the wound and keep telling Candace she's delusional. It wouldn't be so bad if the show wasn't trying a little too hard to showcase that Linda is a great mom to Phineas, Ferb, and Candace and how much they appreciate her in particular. It wouldn't be so bad if there weren't episodes/moments where, when Linda DID find out about Phineas and Ferb's inventions, whether it was a dream or an alternate timeline, that Linda would react in a negative fashion and, sometimes, even have the boys be sent AWAY almost immediately. It wouldn't be so bad if, at the end of the day, she WOULDN'T stoop to her daughter's level of busting if she were in a similar situation (which she does - in "What Do It Do" - like a hypocrite).
Odalia was made to be hated - she has no aspects to trick us into LIKING her or even empathizing with her, and even if there were such elements it wouldn't erase the fact that she was/is awful. The show isn't hiding anything from us: she sucks. And I like her for that - there's a level of honesty there, in spite of how awful she is as a person. The show isn't trying to get us to believe that she's a wonderful person, it's trying to convince us of the exact opposite.
LINDA feels like she's almost pretending to me. The show tries to tell us she's a responsible adult with a good head on her shoulders when really she mostly just does the bare minimum of parenting. Again, she's not a bad parent by any means - but she's not a GREAT parent like the show wants you to think, and the show seems to go on and justify her actions or at the very least paint it off as fine. And mind you, a lot of the show couldn't happen if Linda WAS around to bust the boys - her conveniently not being there is integral. But...you can't simultaneously say she's RESPONSIBLE or competent at parenting, then. At least, you can't convince ME that she is.
TL;DR: Linda is incredibly irresponsible and mistreats Candace to an outrageous degree, and yet the show wants us to believe that Linda is a "great mom".

How would you improve the episode AYA?
...wait...you’re asking me?
I...I didn’t expect this...
Tumblr media
The thing is is that I don’t think I could possibly come up with ideas for this better than, say, @authenticcadence18 or @springsfordays because their ideas are just too good (seriously, check them out, they have the literal best ideas for a rewrite of AYA, holy crap).
But if I were to rewrite it...hm...let’s make a checklist for stuff about AYA that just miffed me:
1. Plot B is fine. Plot B was probably the best part of AYA - Doof’s dilemma made sense for his character (and is hilarious), tied in with the name of the episode, and involved fun little shenanigans. My only gripe is that they didn’t go MONDO insane with it at the end, and said ending felt really abrupt.
(I also wish that, somehow, even Doof was involved with that “everyone knew” bit, but we’re gonna be scrapping that joke for this story - that joke is FUNNY, but it’s also degrading to Phineas, and is sorta a nice way of saying “yeah, you’re stupid for not noticing her feelings even though she’s not entitled to them - you’re the problem. It’s not like the episode is trying to hint at you two having switched roles, no, you’re the only one who was being oblivious and stupid.”)
2. We cut out Plot C entirely. Everyone trying to get Phineas and Isabella together was just...ugh. Why? And they had the audacity to compare what they were doing to all the AMAZING things they did when they were younger, like, guys - you set up some tables, decorations, and cooked them what I can assume to be a run-of-the-mill restaurant dinner - that has NOTHING on a rollercoaster through downtown. And their applause at that sweet but ultimately lackluster confession? Hurt. So much. Now that I think about it, it felt condescending, it unintentionally emphasized HOW uninspired this confession (as much as I love it) was, and it felt like they were taking credit for something they didn’t do.
And if we’re NOT gonna cut out Plot C...have Plot C be about FERB? Leaving for COLLEGE? Out of COUNTRY? Cuz I have a hard time believing that Phineas and Ferb are just OKAY with separating at such a long distance - heck, in “Candace Gets Busted”, FERB is the one who assumes that one day he and his brother are gonna own their own place together. It should at least be BROUGHT UP, don’t you think? (I’m conflicted on whether or not I’d keep Montessa in the ring or at least SHOW US how Ferbnessa happened, because I think what’s weirding people out is that they’re assuming that Vanessa literally waited for Ferb to turn 18 to start dating him - when I think it’s more likely that they kinda JUST started dating during the beginning of Summer? But I think stuff like that really SHOULD be explained because even though I don’t think it’s that weird, I understand why OTHER PEOPLE wouldn’t like the idea)
3. I kinda feel like this should have had more songs? I dunno why, I feel like this all could have been improved if we got a fullblown musical out of this (and...this may be me wanting a “What Might Have Been” reprise, lol) - like, make fun of HSM or something, you can’t tell me you wouldn’t have.
4. I kinda wanted to see more of the “where are they now”. Like, Jeremy, Stacey, Little Suzie Johnson, even that one couple with the lady who’s always like “what did you think, an anniversary dinner was just going to fall from the sky?” - I like stuff like that, it’s so much fun to think about. Also...I legit have so much anxiety over Perry never interacting with him owners ONCE in that episode, and even more anxiety over Pinky never making an appearance at all. Heck, if there was a good time to show us what the HECK happened to Django, now would be a great time.
5. I would have given the episode a unique intro, ala “Night of the Living Pharmacists” and “Last Day of Summer” - like, AYA is as much of a status quo shifter as those two episodes, why was it given the “Phineas and Ferb Get Busted” treatment?
6. Here’s a brilliant thought - NO ONE tells Phineas about Isabella’s crush? How about instead Phineas goes and wants to check in on her, because he really misses her and doesn’t understand why they don’t talk anymore (and he’s tried before, and they’ve nearly had conversations, but Isabella’s just too busy) - did he do something wrong? Is Isabella just too busy now? He needs to know. That should have been his priority, none of this “FrIeNd ZoNe” nonsense.
7. I would have made this into a near movie-length special. With all the topics that this episode brought up, particularly the whole “manipulating the situation” thing, I feel like a longer episode would have given them more time to talk about how stuff like that is...not okay.
[READ THE ACTUAL REWRITE OF THE EPISODE (well, my take at least) UNDER THE CUT!]
Okay, with those out of the way, how I would have written Phinabella the Movie...I mean...Act Your Age (I warn you, it’s not gonna be as good as @authenticcadence18′s or @springsfordays‘s ideas, so if you want quality stuff and not just mushy fanfiction fodder I’d check their stuff out):
I would have sorta made this entire thing take place during the “What Might Have Been” song - what that means is that it’s a collage of memories. How Isabella and Phineas met, how Isabella first got her “crush” (if you can really call it that, girl was full out in love lol), them building stuff with the gang during their canon ages, them going into highschool, Isabella ultimately choosing to give up her crush to maintain her friendship with Phineas (because her choosing to not be as close to Phineas because of a crush isn’t an option), Isabella’s first boyfriend (which probably’s gonna hurt a lot of fans, cuz I envision that to NOT be Phineas; but it’s Phinabella endgame, so relax); the episode just centers on the gang (mainly Isabella since it’s from her perspective) growing up.
Like, yes, all of the memories are gonna be Phinabella centered, but we gotta have SOME side-stories and junk, like maybe how Baljeet gets together with Ginger (and...how they break up...please don’t kill me), what ultimately leads Ferb to want to go back to England for studies (maybe it’s him wanting to be his own person and not wanting people to think he and his brother are just “a pair”), Buford...uh...something with Buford definitely, because I love him and he deserves it. Heck, maybe even the Fireside Girls can have their own arc with a graduation ceremony for their ranks (...what? I’m not linking stuff to the best fanfic ever, noooooo...why would-why would I do that?).
And maybe in this case Plot B SHOULD be different - maybe it should focus on how Doofenshmirtz first got to America, how he first met Charlene, what exactly led him to being evil in the first place, all that good stuff. Though, ultimately, that might be a little angsty - maybe there’s a reason why we don’t see exactly HOW Doof and Charlene divorced, because that could very well be the saddest scene ever, and it’s hard to put that kinda comedic spin on something so tragic (I mean, obviously there are comedies CENTERED on divorce, but like...they always SKIP the divorce part from what I’ve seen). Not to mention that this is a kid’s show, so...I doubt they’d actually show HOW it happened. This is just my thoughts. X’D
Back to the Phinabella.
Phineas and Isabella would have their confession during THIS part of the special rather than the very end (so, like...they’re still in highschool, and Isabella’s already broken up with that other dude in the story, and maybe Phineas had a girlfriend he just wasn’t happy with) - Phineas tries to do something big for Isabella, but it ultimately falls through because of Perry’s current nemesis (we never see who that is, lol), so he settles for something simple (at first he’s scared about it not “being enough” for someone like Isabella, but Ferb’s able to slap that nonsense out of him pretty quickly). He and Isabella spend the ENTIRE DAY together alone, leading to Phineas eventually singing a song he wrote for her to her, and the two have a cute little duet as a result (that has the opposite energy of “What Might Have Been”, so it’s important that somewhere in this episode that “What Might Have Been” is still a thing, it just doesn’t involve Phineas being aware of Isabella’s feelings, and it doesn’t involve Isabella trying to leave somewhere without saying goodbye, this would be more about Isabella, after trying to get over her crush, realizing that she still LIKES Phineas that way). They almost kiss, but they’re ultimately interrupted by Buford being Buford or something, but it implies that Phineas and Isabella are now a couple onwards from here.
Eventually it leads to a small party in the middle of Summer with the gang, with them playing some games and talking about how by the end of Summer, they won’t be seeing each other as much anymore because of college and stuff. They all remanence about the simple times - with Isabella eventually leaving (saying it’s because she needs to check on something, but really it’s because she’s sad that things are ending so quickly and she’s gonna miss everyone especially Phineas), and Phineas going after her to see if she’s alright (he’s oblivious, but he’s always been able to tell if she’s sad for the most part, save for maybe a few instances - but he’s older now, so he’s probably better at telling).
The two go for a stroll outside, and discuss the changes and stuff, how he and Isabella are ultimately going to have to work on a long-distance relationship and how Phineas is going to miss Ferb when he leaves the country, and how he’s gonna miss Isabella. And then they both realize that everything is gonna be okay, because they’ve literally dealt with worse situations and came out stronger for it - Isabella nor Phineas have any doubts in their minds that their relationship with each other or anyone else is going to sever just because of long distance.
Time moves onward, and there are a lot of changes (mainly talking about couples and other stuff - if it were me, there’d be endgame Buford/Gretchen and Ferb/Ginger of all people, and of course Candace and Jeremy would be married by this time). Phineas and Isabella are about to go into their last year of college, and decide to spend one more day together before they, once again, go their separate ways. The gang surprises Isabella by having made an ACTUALLY GOOD AND CREATIVE BACKYARD DINNER for the two per Phineas’ planning (the idea wasn’t bad, the execution was just lame imo), and long story short, Phineas proposes to Isabella. She obviously accepts, and everyone cheers for them as Isabella inner monologues about how change can be scary but it’s okay some mushy stuff about loved ones being there for you when you need them or something.
And finally, we cut to many years later, with Isabella as an adult now, looking out at the backyard of her current home, drinking some tea - this whole movie/special has taken place in this Isabella’s memories (if that makes sense), as she thinks on how she got there. The story ends with a child (we don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl) calling to her and calling her “mom”, and Isabella leaving to check on her kid.
And...that’s how I would have written “Act Your Age”. Again, I recommend this and this over my idea (because again, their takes on this episode are perfect, I don’t think anyone can top them), but if you like it then great. This was still fun to write out and stuff, and I hope you enjoyed it regardless. ^^;
