I’ve now finished watching The Americans (Soviet couple living in deep cover, complete with two children, in early 1980s USA ) . The finale had me not just crying but literally sobbing . They stuck the landing so perfectly.

Andor could take any of these deep-cover plot lines in Season 2, but I’m personally more intrigued by the psychological effect of everything that the spies have to do.

Sleeping with strangers? Seducing minors? Even marrying somebody, to keep them close ? Check.

Murdering totally innocent people simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Check.

Building up trust, friendship or even love with somebody… And then having to face killing them if and when they discover the truth? Check.

Even if that’s someone is very close to you. Family, even. If, for example, they panic. Or say that they’ve had enough.

Constantly working out the equation of how much the cause matters to them versus their love for each other.

Yes. All this. They are truly living Luthen’s monologue: “ I burn my decency for someone else’s future.”

Honestly, if there are any Andor fans out there who have not already seen The Americans: do so. It takes a season or so to really warm up and be aware that the on-screen sex and violence is obviously more extreme than anything we would get in Andor. Meanwhile, there are a few Cassian x Jyn AU fics out there and a Cassian and Vel purple marriage or two which might also scratch the ‘living in a relationship in deep cover’ itch while we wait. 

And when major characters are killed in The Americans… there is sometimes very little warning. Iykyk.

Stephen Schiff was a main writer on The Americans and also wrote Andor episode 7. One of my favourite episodes… he is a master of subtext, and his The Americans episodes have that in spades.

I'm on s4 of my The Americans rewatch and that scene when Philip has to tell Gabriel about how he's been going to EST and Gabriel and Elizabeth sort of gang up on him like what, do you want to talk about your feelings, Philip? Do you want to talk to a therapist? Why don't you just repress your emotions like the rest of us?? is so funny
