"We had everything in harmony. We'd come to the point where everything was turning into music for us, and you had to go upstairs and smash all the instruments."

100 Albums To Understand Muse - Part 8 [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
Tumblr media
MEW Frengers (2003) World debut of the Danish band, boasting melancholic melodies, the transparent high tone voice of Jonas Biele and guitars that, like Muse, grew up on The Smashing Pumpkins and the Pixies. Their latest release, 'No More Stories…….' succeeds in building a dynamic world with a more progressive experimental spirit. -S
MILES DAVIS Pangaea (1975) A masterpiece of the so-called ‘electric period’ of the 1970s. If you think it's ‘jazz’, you'll be surprised. Basically, the cool and sophisticated worldview of this album is the opposite of that of the passionate Muse, but I think there are similarities in the ‘once in a lifetime’ energy that pervades the band's live performances. -M
MONIQUE HAAS Debussy : Suite Bergamasque / Deux Arabesques / Children's Corner (1995) Debussy is a composer that all piano players have a keen interest in. The images that emerge from his poetic melodies are simple, yet they have an impressionistic intensity that leaves a strong impression on the listener's heart. He is also one of Matthew's favourite composers. Enjoy the limpid sound with no ill effects. -M
MY BLOODY VALENTINE Loveless (1991) The second album from MBV, led by roaring guitar master Kevin Shields, and a milestone in shoegaze, still influencing everything from acoustic to neo-shoegaze. Whispering vocals float gently between walls of dissonant, layered guitar noise. It will leave the listener in a trance and lead them into a dreamlike world. -I
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE The Black Parade (2006) US alternative punk band that recognises a variety of influences from Queen to punk. The band made their breakthrough in Japan with this album. Muse toured the US with this album in 2007 as a frontliner. When Muse took the stage at Wembley Stadium in the UK a few months later, they fronted the band in return. -H
NED'S ATOMIC DUSTBIN God Fodder (1991) A prime example of the ‘gleeful rock’ that dominated the UK indie scene in the early 90s. The first album, featuring snarling twin basses, blistering fuzz guitars, danceable driving beats and sweet and sour melodies, was a #4 hit in the UK. In their heyday, the three Muse members were in secondary school and Matthew's first gig was with the Neds. -I
NEW ORDER Low-Life (1985) Formed by the remaining members of Joy Division after Ian Curtis (vo) committed suicide. The band's melodious bass was a distinctive feature, and it swallowed techno, disco and later house, and used synths extensively. The killer 80s synth-pop tune 2 shines with its piercing uppercut. -I
NINA SIMONE I Put A Spell On You (1965) A classic album from the Philips era by a singer-songwriter who transcended genres such as jazz-blues and R&B. Muse covered ‘Feeling Good’, a standard that has been taken up by many different faces, but Matthew was introduced to it by Nina's version. The title track featuring Screaming Jay Hawkins is also full of atmosphere. -S

Championship leader Max Verstappen completes a practice double in Barcelona
Who else?! Championship leader Max Verstappen completes a practice double in Barcelona ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix... but it's more frustration for Lewis Hamilton in his upgraded Mercedes as he finishes 11th Max Vertstappen set the pace for the Spanish Grand Prix during second practice Lewis Hamilton only finished 11th on a disappointing day for Mercedes team  Spanish home favourite Fernando Alonso finished second for Aston Martin  By Philip Duncan, Pa F1 Correspondent Published: 12:50 EDT, 2 June 2023 | Updated: 12:51 EDT, 2 June 2023 Max Verstappen completed a practice double for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton finished only 11th on a disheartening day for the seven-time world champion and his Mercedes team. As Verstappen predictably set the pace for Red Bull at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya, Hamilton, 12th in the day's first running, ended second practice six tenths off the pace. Home favourite Fernando Alonso raised hope that he could challenge Verstappen and his all-conquering Red Bull team after he finished second for Aston Martin, just 0.170 seconds back. Nico Hulkenberg was an impressive third for Haas, with Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez fourth. Hamilton admitted on Thursday that Mercedes' much-anticipated upgrade, which made its debut in Monaco a week ago, had not provided the magic fix he was hoping for. Max Vertstappen once again led the way as he finished fastest around the grid for Red Bull  Verstappen has been in a class of one for the past 18 months and his dominance continues And on his new machine's second outing, at a track where the Silver Arrows said they would obtain a greater understanding of their upgrades, the evidence suggests they are no closer to taking on the mighty Red Bull, or indeed, leapfrogging rivals Aston Martin and Ferrari. Hamilton's team-mate George Russell finished eighth, half-a-second off the pace. Russell also came within inches of a nasty accident with Oscar Piastri after he was blocked by the rookie McLaren driver. Russell was forced to take evasive action, running off the road and into the gravel. "Who the f*** was that in the McLaren," said the usually mild-mannered Briton as he limped through the sandtrap. Verstappen has been in a class of one for the past 18 months and his dominance continued on Friday. Fernando Alonso was second fastest finishing just 0.170 seconds back from Verstappen  Lewis Hamilton was a distant 11th while Mercedes teammate George Russel finished in eighth  A day after he made the ominous prediction that Red Bull could win all 16 remaining races this year, Verstappen finished seven tenths faster than anyone else in the opening running before returning to the top of the timesheets for the day's final action. Alonso's home race this weekend marks the 10th anniversary of his 32nd and last win in the sport. However, the Spaniard is enjoying a career resurgence following his transfer from Alpine to Aston Martin, finishing on the podium at five of the first six races, and emerging as a possible threat to Verstappen. Five days after he finished on the podium in Monaco, Esteban Ocon was fifth for Alpine, three tenths back, with the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz sixth and seventh respectively. British driver Lando Norris finished 14th for McLaren, two places behind his rookie team-mate Piastri. As a bonus, two artists, in their studios, working on unstretched canvas. Unlike the examples in the previous post, Frankenthaler and Guston both preferred to stretch their canvases before sending them out into the world. Frankenthaler appears to have used the stretching process as an opportunity to edit her image. As can be seen in the top photograph, she worked directly on the floor, tacking a strip of canvas down--she hasn’t even cut the canvas off of the roll yet--placing herself physically inside of the image area as she applied her thin, watery pigment.
Guston preferred to work upright, but his canvases were only loosely tacked onto boards along the top edge, presumably causing them to flap about as he painted. For years, prior to seeing these studio shots, I wondered about the wide margins of unpainted canvas in some of his paintings. This image answered some of my questions: he’s left what appears to be a roughly estimated amount of canvas for stretching, with no ruled lines or masking taped rectangle to paint within, preferring to let the image end softly before meeting the edge of the stretcher bar.
