10 Philanthropic Trends Shaping the Future of Leadership
Philanthropy is increasingly shaping the future of leadership, driven by emerging trends that reflect changes in society, technology, and generational expectations. As we look into the trends that are shaping the philanthropic space in 2024, it becomes clear that these trends are not just about giving but also about how leadership itself is being redefined in the nonprofit sector. Here’s a look at the 10 philanthropic trends that are influencing leadership, as well as the future of giving.
1. Artificial Intelligence in Philanthropy
AI is no longer just a buzzword; it's becoming a crucial tool in philanthropy. Nonprofit organizations are adopting AI to enhance their fundraising efforts, improve operational efficiency, and gather more precise data. Leaders in philanthropy must now understand how to leverage AI ethically and effectively to improve their missions. AI can aid in donor relationship management, automate repetitive tasks, and even assist in personalizing outreach to potential supporters. However, as organizations adopt AI, leaders must ensure that data security and ethical concerns are addressed, adding a new layer of responsibility to modern leadership in philanthropy.
2. Trust-Based Philanthropy
One of the significant shifts we’re seeing in the nonprofit sector is the rise of trust-based philanthropy. This approach moves away from traditional grant-making, which often comes with strict conditions, toward giving organizations unrestricted funds that they can allocate as needed. This trend empowers leaders by providing them with more flexibility to address the needs of their communities without being constrained by donor expectations. Trust-based philanthropy encourages collaboration between donors and organizations, creating a more supportive and mutually beneficial relationship that allows for long-term growth and impact.
3. Engaging Gen Z Donors
The philanthropic world is beginning to see the influence of Gen Z, whose approach to giving is quite different from previous generations. This younger cohort is not only interested in donating money but also in engaging with causes that align with their values. They are looking for transparency and want to see the tangible impact of their contributions. Leaders in philanthropy must be adept at creating narratives that resonate with Gen Z, emphasizing the personal stories behind the causes and making giving an emotionally rewarding experience. Gen Z is also more inclined toward supporting causes related to social justice, climate change, and diversity, which is reshaping leadership priorities in nonprofit organizations.
4. Community-Centric Fundraising
Community-centric fundraising is gaining traction as a model that prioritizes the collective over individual organizations. This approach emphasizes collaboration and resource sharing among nonprofits, which benefits the community as a whole. Leaders adopting this model are shifting away from traditional competitive fundraising tactics and focusing more on building partnerships that enhance the collective impact of their efforts. This shift is especially relevant as philanthropy continues to move toward more inclusive practices that ensure resources are allocated equitably across various communities.
5. The Role of Donor-Advised Funds
Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are becoming an increasingly popular tool for giving. DAFs allow donors to make charitable contributions, receive immediate tax benefits, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. For leaders in philanthropy, this trend means navigating a growing pool of resources that may not be immediately available but can be used strategically for future initiatives. DAFs are changing the way organizations plan their financial futures, and leadership must now incorporate long-term planning and relationship-building with donors into their strategies.
6. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
DEI has become a central issue in leadership across all sectors, including philanthropy. Leaders are being called upon to ensure that their organizations not only reflect the communities they serve but also promote inclusivity at every level. This trend goes beyond just racial and gender diversity; it includes ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities or from underrepresented communities, have a seat at the table. Leadership in philanthropy is evolving to be more inclusive, and this shift is driving changes in hiring practices, board composition, and decision-making processes.
7. Addressing the Talent Crisis
The nonprofit sector is facing a significant talent shortage, which is challenging leaders to rethink how they attract and retain employees. Many organizations are now exploring the use of fractional leadership, where part-time or temporary experts are brought in to fill gaps. Additionally, nonprofits are revising compensation models to become more competitive and appealing to potential hires. The shift toward AI and automation is also helping nonprofits overcome some of the operational challenges posed by the talent shortage, as AI can handle administrative tasks, allowing human talent to focus on higher-impact activities.
8. Climate Philanthropy
As climate change continues to be a pressing global issue, it’s no surprise that climate philanthropy is on the rise. Leaders in the nonprofit sector are increasingly focusing on sustainability initiatives, recognizing that addressing climate change is not just a niche cause but a global necessity. This trend is pushing philanthropic leaders to think long-term, partnering with organizations that work on sustainable solutions and influencing corporate behavior around environmental issues. Leadership in this area requires a deep understanding of global environmental challenges and the ability to mobilize resources for long-term impact.
9. Collaborative Giving
Another emerging trend in philanthropy is collaborative giving, where donors come together to pool resources for a common cause. This trend encourages collective action and creates a larger impact than individual donations could achieve alone. Leaders in philanthropy are increasingly facilitating these collaborations, understanding that working together amplifies their efforts. Collaborative giving is often focused on solving large-scale problems like poverty, healthcare access, and educational disparities, requiring leaders to navigate complex partnerships and manage collective decision-making processes.
10. Ethical Use of Technology
As philanthropy continues to integrate more advanced technologies, from AI to blockchain, leaders must be mindful of the ethical implications of these tools. While technology can enhance the efficiency and reach of philanthropic efforts, it also raises concerns about data privacy, security, and the potential for unintended consequences. Leadership in this area requires a careful balance between embracing innovation and safeguarding the rights and privacy of the communities being served. Leaders must also be prepared to engage in ongoing conversations about how technology should be used responsibly in the nonprofit space.
In conclusion
Philanthropy is evolving, and so is leadership within the sector. As we move through 2024 and beyond, leaders will need to adapt to new technologies, engage younger generations of donors, and embrace more inclusive and collaborative models of giving. The trends shaping the future of philanthropy—from AI adoption to trust-based and community-centric fundraising—are not only transforming how organizations operate but also redefining what it means to be a leader in this space. Leaders who can navigate these trends and respond to the changing expectations of donors, partners, and communities will be better positioned to create lasting, meaningful change.

Revati
The twenty-seventh nakshatra (27th out of 27)
Degrees: 16°40' to 30°00' Pisces
The ruler of the nakshatra: Mercury (sanks. Budha)
Deity: Pushan, the nourisher, a solar deity associated with protection, guidance, and safe travel
Nakshtra's guna: sattva (divine)
Revati's keywords: completion, nourishment, protection, safe journeys, spiritual fulfilment, compassion, and guidance
Symbol: a fish (sometimes also a drum), signifying rhythm, protection, and the flow of life. It represents the end of the zodiac, making it a nakshatra of completion, fulfilment, and transitions.
Governed by Pushan, the deity who ensures safe passage, Revati emphasizes spiritual growth, care, and the culmination of karmic cycles.
Career options: protection, care, creativity, or spirituality: healthcare, caregiving, and social work; music, dance, writing, and poetry; counselling, teaching, and mentoring; guiding professions such as travel advisors, cruise and leisure, marine tourism, naval services, coast guard, navigators and guides; spiritual teachers
Naksatras's strengths: compassion, generosity, creativity, strong intuition, spiritually inclined, protective and dependable nature
Nakshatra's weaknesses: overprotectiveness or excessive attachment; indecisiveness and difficulty letting go; vulnerability, overly idealistic or naive approach to life
Lagna (ASC) in Revati: these natives are compassionate, creative, and often spiritually inclined. They exude a gentle, nurturing aura and often dedicate their lives to helping others. These individuals have a natural talent for guiding and supporting others, making them effective counsellors, mentors, or empathetic leaders. However, they may struggle with balancing their idealism with practicality and can be prone to self-sacrifice.
Sun in Revati: bestows compassionate leadership and a strong sense of responsibility toward others. These natives are driven by a desire to guide and protect, often taking on the role of mentors or advisors. They shine in environments where they can serve others or contribute to the greater good, such as humanitarian or philanthropic efforts. The influence of Pushan, the deity of nourishment and guidance, enhances their natural charisma and ability to inspire trust. Key challenges for such a placement might include a lack of assertiveness or a struggle to gain recognition for their efforts. Additionally, such people can become overly idealistic, neglecting practical needs.
Moon in Revati: heightens emotional depth and sensitivity. These individuals are highly intuitive, empathetic, and nurturing. They have a natural inclination toward artistic and creative pursuits (arts, literature, writing), as well as a profound connection to spirituality and philosophy. Revati Moon natives often seek to create harmony in their surroundings and find fulfilment in helping others. Despite an intuitive understanding of spiritual and mystical matters, strong emotional intelligence, and the ability to connect deeply with others, they may be overly sensitive or prone to emotional overwhelm, leading them to retreat into their inner world when faced with difficulties or a conflict.
Mercury in Revati: amplifies communication skills, intellect, and creativity. These individuals have a quick wit and high adaptability. They typically excel in fields that require verbal or written expression, such as writing, teaching, or counselling. They have a natural ability to convey ideas in a harmonious and inspiring way, often serving as mediators or guides in their communities. On the flip side, those with such a placement may struggle with occasional indecision due to overanalyzing situations. Additionally, these individuals can become overly idealistic, losing focus on practical matters.
Mars in Revati: directs energy toward protection and service. These individuals are courageous, determined, and action-oriented, often channelling their efforts into causes that help others. They may have a deep connection to spirituality, using their strength to uplift and nurture those in need. Among the key positive traits here are protective instincts, willingness to fight for justice, and ability to balance assertiveness with compassion. Negative traits (if Mars is afflicted) include possible passive-aggressive tendencies or struggle with expressing anger or efforts constructively.
Venus in Revati: enhances a love for beauty, harmony, and relationships. These natives are romantic, artistic, and deeply compassionate. They are drawn to creative fields, such as music, painting, or design, and value meaningful connections with others. Pushan’s influence brings a nurturing quality to their relationships, often making them protective, devoted, and caring partners. Among the key challenges here are: over-idealization of relationships, leading to disappointment, vulnerability to being overly indulgent or escapist.
Jupiter in Revati: signifies wisdom, spiritual growth, and a nurturing nature. These individuals are natural teachers or mentors, driven by a strong sense of morality and a desire to uplift others and share knowledge. They are deeply connected to their spiritual path and often seek to create a harmonious balance between material and spiritual pursuits. On the flip side, these people may become overly idealistic or lose focus on practical concerns. Sometimes they have a tendency to overextend themselves in helping others.
Saturn in Revati brings a sense of discipline, responsibility, and endurance. These natives are often drawn to activities that involve long-term care, guidance, or humanitarian efforts. They naturally possess quiet strength (resilience) and patience and are highly reliable in supporting others through challenges. Challenges here include being sometimes emotionally restrained due to taking on too much responsibility and struggling with letting go of rigid structures and routines, and excessive control.
Rahu in Revati creates a strong desire for spiritual growth and fulfilment. These individuals often possess natural charisma, which helps them gain attraction, and seek innovative or unconventional ways to achieve their goals, driven by a restless need for meaning. While Rahu can amplify ambition, its placement in Revati also brings an innate sensitivity and a longing for harmony. However, at the same time, these people can be quite restless and can have difficulty finding contentment in material pursuits. Apart from that, there might be a tendency to overreach or pursue goals impulsively.
Ketu in Revati: reflects spiritual detachment and wisdom carried from the past lives. These individuals often have a deep intuitive understanding of the mystical and metaphysical realms. They are introspective and may feel disconnected from material concerns, focusing instead on spiritual fulfilment and higher goals. Key challenges with this placement include a struggle with grounding themselves in practical matters and a tendency to withdraw from relationships or societal responsibilities.

Quick Facts: 31st President Herbert Hoover (1929-1933)
Hoover is largely remembered for failing to do anything during the Great Depression. Despite warnings of the stock market bubble, the farm crisis, and growing income inequality, Hoover was a 'small government' Republican reluctant to regulate banks. He opposed congressional proposals to provide federal relief to the unemployed, believing that was the job of state and local governments or philanthropic organizations.
Hoover's record with racial minorities was likewise poor. While he did appoint a lot (for the time) of Black people to federal positions, he also removed them from leadership in the Republican Party. He refused to push for a much-needed federal anti-lynching law. Rather than decreasing the incredibly high unemployment rate by creating federal jobs, he scapegoated Mexicans. He did this first by cutting immigration and then later by 'repatriating' about one million to Mexico. Over half were US citizens who had been born in the United States. This meets the modern legal definition of ethnic cleansing.
If you've ever heard about the US political party 'swap', this is where it happened--the poor and racial minorities who before had made the base of the Republic party switched to support FDR in the 1932 election.
Hoover's actions outside of his Presidency were altogether more helpful. Before, he headed relief for Belgium after World War I and many countries in Central and Eastern Europe. He successfully led the federal response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and was influential in the development of radio. After his term, he helped provide relief for Poland, Finland, and post-WWII West Germany. For his actions throughout his life providing relief to foreign nations, Historian Richard Pipes said "Many statesmen occupy a prominent place in history for having sent millions to their death; Herbert Hoover, maligned for his performance as President, and soon forgotten in Russia, has the rare distinction of having saved millions."

You possesses a profound empathy for others, championing progressive ideas and making a difference through your unique perspective. With your visionary outlook, compassionate nature, and bold assertiveness, you have the potential to inspire and lead, leaving a lasting impact on the world around you while staying true to your individuality. A unique combination of placements that is both innovatively creative and emotionally insightful. Such an individual possesses a deep understanding of themselves, as well as those around them, and uses this insight to create innovative solutions to problems. They are highly intuitive and often possess a visionary quality that helps them to see beyond the norm, leading them to be natural pioneers in their field. Their emotions tend to be deep and intense, and they have a natural ability to tune into the emotions of others.
This combination can make them highly empathetic and compassionate, often being a source of comfort and strength for those around them. At times, however, this sensitivity can leave them feeling vulnerable or overwhelmed. Their Aries Rising energy brings a fearlessness into the mix, leading them to approach challenges with bravery and confidence. This energy is seen in both their personal and professional lives, giving them the ability to take on leadership roles with ease. They value their independence and are drawn towards situations that allow them to assert their individuality in a meaningful way. You are genuinely gregarious and intelligently concerned about people and about a mixture – perhaps an odd one of social causes and metaphysical ideas. Your friendliness hides a sensitive and precarious inner core which, however, few people ever really get to know.
You will make a stand for the things you believe in, but you secretly hope you will not have to do it alone. You want to be of service to the world, to be connected in a meaningful way. No matter how busy you are you will make time for whatever philanthropic pursuit grabs your imagination. People know you are honorable, and if you ever chastise someone you do it with gentle humor – you know you have been there yourself. Your compassion for and understanding of human nature makes you well suited for work with people, either in education, the ministry or the caring/medical professions. You treat people as equals, and with great respect. You make a wonderful teacher because you are able to bring out the inner resources in others which they do not even realize they possess. You are likely to have a flashing smile, piercing eyes that move quickly from object to object, gold or reddish coloring in the skin or hair, a muscular body, and an agile quick movement to your step.

Brazil’s Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty
On November 18, 2024, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered a speech at the Summit of the Heads of State, urging leaders from 40 nations to support the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. Under Lula’s leadership, Brazil joined forces with 82 other countries to establish the alliance, commonly called the G20.
The term “G20” stands for “Group of 20,” which consists of 20 of the world’s biggest economies gathering to help rebuild the world in times of crisis. The G20 was formed in 1999 to discuss policy matters and provide aid to countries in a financial crisis. The member countries of the G20 include the following: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Türkiye, the U.K. and the U.S. Initially, there were only 19 countries that were considered “member countries.” However, Spain has been and is currently included in the group as a permanent guest.
The G20 comprises 31 nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs), philanthropic organizations and 24 international organizations, nine of which are financial institutions. The group’s purpose or ultimate goal, is to “accelerate global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty” through its initiative to reach 500 million people with cash-transfer programs in low and middle-income countries by 2030.
Brazil has already implemented public policies, such as the Food Acquisition Program and the School Meals Program, which the Alliance plans to use as a “benchmark for combating hunger.” The principles of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty inspired these initiatives. A High-Level Champion Council will supervise the Alliance to oversee the work that it’s doing. Additionally, it will hold regular Summits Against Hunger and Poverty.

by Dion J. Pierre
It is in this vexed climate that the HCJAA is seeking an urgent meeting with Gay to discuss “concrete plans to ensure the protection of Jewish students on campus.”
“Even before the current wave of antisemitism on campus, there had been a steady uptick in reported incidents of harassment, including physical assaults, verbal abuse, and graffiti of Hillel and other Jewish spaces,” the association pointed out. It also seeks an unambiguous condemnation of the Hamas pogrom from the university’s leadership, something so far conspicuous by its absence.
“There are deep concerns among the alumni about the destructive tone of conversation the university encourages by not swiftly and unequivocally condemning the terrorist attacks by Hamas,” Rebecca Claire Brooks, a co-founder of the HCJAA, told The Algemeiner in an interview on Thursday.
In the wake of Hamas’ atrocities, Harvard University has lost financial backing and faced sharp criticism for refusing to disavow students who signed the widely condemned letter that carried Bharmal’s signature. The controversies startled business and philanthropic leaders and prompted allegations that Harvard does not regard antisemitism as a significant issue.
According to Brooks, it is vital that the university establishes “whether or not there is a toxic culture at Harvard that allows a peddling of antisemitic discourse that calls all Jews colonizers, that calls for resistance by any means necessary, and that promotes very slanted views about the state of Israel.”
She stressed that HCJAA seeks “a fundamental shift in the campus culture in which students are able to have informed debates, to engage in critical thinking, to engage in moral reasoning without bullying and antagonism [from other] students.”
So far, Harvard has neither recognized nor agreed to hold a meeting with the HCJAA, which, Brooks said, is keen to discuss its “reasonable reforms.”
Other Jewish alumni cited in an HCJAA press release voiced similar concerns to Brooks.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Peter Bronstein, who graduated from Harvard in 1965. “The University has accomplished twin moral failures: allowing the widespread glorification of Hamas terrorism by its students and abandoning its responsibility to teach students how to express their ideas without resorting to violent discourse.”
