Wisconsin Librarian of the Year! by Lester Public Library Via Flickr: Congratulations to Terry Ehle, Youth Coordinator, Lester Public LIbrary, Two Rivers, Wisconsin, for being selected as the 2024 Librarian of the Year by the Wisconsin Library Association! We are very proud of Terry! From WLA: Librarian of the Year – Terry Ehle, Lester Public Library, Two Rivers Terry Ehle has been with the Lester Public Library since 1998. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Illinois University, and after being named the 2014 SSCS Paralibrarian of the Year, attained her MLIS from UW-Milwaukee. Terry is an active member of the WLA Youth Services Section (YSS), serving as YSS Chair in 2017. She is also a member of the American Library Association, Association for Library Service to Children, and Young Adult Library Services Association. According to her colleagues, Ehle consistently raises the bar in materials selection and programming for infants to teens at her library: Ehle introduced, and is still helping widen the scope of, Reach Out and Read in Manitowoc County, a program that put 2,382 books in the hands of parents and their young children last year. Also in 2023, she submitted a successful grant application to promote early literacy and environmental awareness in partnership with Two Rivers Parks & Recreation and Woodland Dunes Nature Center & Preserve. As a result, Storywalks® were erected on library grounds and at a local park, and a large part of the park was restored to wetland, with a raised boardwalk and natural play features added. The project will delight residents and visitors for years to come. During the pandemic, Ehle spearheaded story time, youth, and family to-go packs. The plan was to discontinue the program once the building reopened, but she made the decision to continue it due to the positive response. From its start in May 2020 through July 2024, packs have reached more than 25,000 users. Ehle has championed teen engagement in the community with TR Teen Nights, an after-hours library program that has expanded to include community partners, including the city’s parks & recreation department, the school district, Woodland Dunes Nature Center & Preserve, and Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. The partners invite teens into their spaces for safe, inexpensive, fun activities. The program provides enriching events and demonstrates that the community values teens and will find ways to encourage them. Through her efforts, the Rotary Club of Two Rivers awarded funds to implement a STEAM area in the library Ehle has formed a strong partnership with the Two Rivers School District. She meets regularly with administrators and educators and was a participant in community discussions to map out goals and strategies for a district three-year plan. She is president of the governance board of the Lighthouse Learning Academy, the district’s online charter school. Ehle is also dedicated to visiting district schools to do book talks. She brings library books to these visits for all students to check out, providing important access for children whose parents do not visit the library. This is no easy task - in the 2023-24 school year, she visited 32 classes monthly and checked out more than 1,600 books to students. Ehle is known as a well-versed advocate for best practices regarding the way children learn and shares this expertise with her community and her peers. Ehle leads the early literacy work group for the Investing Early Coalition of Healthiest Manitowoc County, a group which provides collaborative leadership to improve the well-being of the county. She has presented on youth programming and innovation in programming at past WLA conferences and has served as a panelist and presenter for webinars with both YSS and the WLA Outreach Services Roundtable. She recently co-wrote the article, “Practice the Practices: Kids Learn Big in Dramatic Play Areas,” for the fall 2024 issue of Children & Libraries, the journal of the Association for Library Service to Children. Due to the success of the local Reach Out & Read (ROR) partnership, Ehle serves on a Wisconsin ROR committee that is compiling a toolkit to maximize partnerships between libraries and clinics. Ehle is also an advocate for librarianship as a career, arranging behind-the-scenes tours, career days, and community service projects for area youth. She has twice participated in internship programs mentoring college students considering a library career. The Lester Public Library, Two Rivers and its surrounding communities, and the state of Wisconsin are the lucky beneficiaries of Ehle’s dedication, creativity, and vision in providing outstanding library services.

Scholarship For Foreign Students
Scholarships for foreign students in the USA provide valuable financial support for international students pursuing their education in the United States. These scholarships aim to promote diversity, cultural exchange, and academic excellence among the student population. Here is some information about scholarships available for foreign students in the USA:
Fulbright Foreign Student Program: The Fulbright Program is a prestigious scholarship program that offers fully funded scholarships for graduate-level study, research, or teaching assistantships at U.S. universities. It is open to students from various countries and disciplines, promoting international understanding and collaboration.
University Scholarships: Many universities in the United States offer scholarships specifically for international students. These scholarships can be merit-based, need-based, or a combination of both. They cover a range of expenses, including tuition fees, room and board, and sometimes additional allowances. Each university has its own scholarship programs, eligibility criteria, and application processes, so it's important to research individual university websites for available opportunities.
Government-funded Scholarships: The U.S. government, as well as various U.S. government agencies, offer scholarships for foreign students. These scholarships may be awarded based on academic merit, specific fields of study, or cultural exchange programs. Examples include the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (UGRAD), and the Critical Language Scholarship Program.
Private Foundations and Organizations: Numerous private foundations, nonprofits, and organizations in the United States provide scholarships for international students. These scholarships are often aimed at promoting education, fostering international collaboration, and supporting talented individuals. Examples include the Soros Foundation's Open Society Foundations, the Rotary Foundation Global Grant, and the Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Program.
Field-specific Scholarships: Many professional associations, industry organizations, and research institutions in the United States offer scholarships for international students pursuing degrees in specific academic disciplines. These scholarships are designed to support exceptional students in fields such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), business, arts, and social sciences.
Cultural Exchange Programs: Various cultural exchange programs provide scholarships for international students to study or intern in the United States. These programs promote intercultural understanding and offer financial support to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Examples include the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program.
When applying for scholarships as a foreign student in the USA, it is crucial to carefully review the eligibility criteria, deadlines, and application requirements for each scholarship. Prepare a strong application that highlights your academic achievements, leadership skills, extracurricular involvement, and personal statement. Seek guidance from educational advisors, utilize scholarship search engines, and explore resources provided by your home country's embassy or educational institutions. The competition for scholarships can be intense, so it's important to start your search early, apply to multiple scholarships, and stay organized throughout the application process.

"Shikshagraha is about redefining what's possible when every stakeholder-government, civil society, industry, and communities-comes together with a shared purpose. This is not a challenge any single organisation or institution can tackle alone. The future of millions of children rests on our ability to collaborate and innovate. With over 50% of children enrolled in public schools, there is a growing consensus that improving infrastructure, teaching quality, and learning outcomes is critical for the countrys socio-economic growth. R.Y.L.A. is an annual Program that aims at Training and giving exposure about Leadership to Youths. Leadership is a fundamental quality, necessary for advancement by anyone in their professional and personal life. It is important to note that R.Y.L.A. is a Seminar aimed at strengthening, in young people aged 18 to 30, the fundamental values of Rotary: service, friendship, diversity, integrity and leadership, not as supremacy but rather as the know how to be leader in a group. It also gives Rotary the opportunity to train young leaders who can then exercise their leadership in their fields of study or work and within their territories.
It’s important to remind everyone that the R.Y.L.A. is a "strategic" event for Rotary, because it is aimed at young people, the younger generation on whose legs is intended, in the future, to walk our Rotary.

we’ve actually talked about this exact video before! hannah’s video pissed me off to no end lol. i understand everyone makes mistakes but she made a TON for her app process. although i am glad she is seeking to get a degree and is aware that social media and youtube may not always be an option. you need to apply where you WANT to go. not where your friends go. not where theres some sort of influence. it’s huge. she had so many big name schools and then she went to a local one i had never heard of before i think? im pretty sure she applied to msu too. but anyway, the college app videos are SO unrealistic. and they all apply to the same fucking schools!!!! all the uc’s, all the ivies, all the well known schools honestly. and they’re all like “this is gonna be a REALISTIC college video! i had a 4.8 gpa, i was president for 8 clubs at my school, played 3 varsity sports all four years of high school, i was in 30 clubs, national honors society, 1500 on the sat, 45 hours of community service a week, a part time job” LIKE FHSDKHSDKJLHSKDH WHAT.
so. in case anyone wanted to know, here are my stats.
may i present to you. a realistic college application.
gpa:
3.4 weighted, 3.3 unweighted.
i got honor roll almost every marking period of high school!
ap’s:
1 ap class junior year - finished with an A, did not take the national because our teacher didn’t prepare us good enough and i wasn’t going to pay for it lmao
honors classes:
4 honors
extra curriculars:
i wasn’t in any clubs. literally none. my school has crappy clubs.
- varsity hockey manager
- attended 2 leadership conferences at university of pennsylvania soph and junior year
- attended a business summer camp up in williamsport
- ambassador for my school for said summer camp
- girl stem fresh year
- attended rotary youth leadership awards conference this year
- business competition at a college fresh year
- 3 years of a school wide event that we practice outside of school multiple times a week
- spoke at a school board meeting about saving a program/class i’m in!
- jv/varsity bowling soph year
test scores:
LMAO
fun fact v and i were in the middle of a really big fight when i was taking my psats....... and i was really sad and couldnt concentrate on my test.
i got a 960 on my psat.
out of 1600.
not my finest moment honestly.
letters of recommendations:
i asked my “in school mom” to write me a letter of recommendation! i had her as my teacher freshman and currently right now in my senior year. she has seen me grow through all 4 years and we had an instant bond my first day freshman year. it’s a 4 year class i took, and while she wasnt my teacher for that class sophomore and junior year she was still super involved with me and making sure i was doing good! then i asked my honors english teacher from freshman year, who i had then and then also had junior year for the same class the other teacher taught! make sure you build really good bonds with teachers - the ones you’re the “teachers pet” for will write you incredible letters of recommendation.
any other questions, feel free to ask:)

Alumni Spotlight: Catching up with Abby Mayo (YLI ‘20)
Since graduating from YLI, I have definitely stepped out of my comfort zone with many different experiences. I was nominated and encouraged to apply for the 2021 National Council on Youth Leadership. I learned about service leadership and have kept busy as an appointed dance captain in our varsity show choir. I also volunteer my time as a student teacher at my dance studio for the 6th year.
Building relationships and connections is something we focused on in YLI, especially in our small groups. This past summer, I was encouraged to apply for RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). I was able to go into that conference with an open mind and a desire to build deep connections through trust and empathy. Because of RYLA, I am inspired to foster connections with service organizations. I shared a professional presentation at the Rotary Club to express my gratitude. Being effective and professional communicator is a big aspect and takeaway from my time in YLI. I have also been working with Special Olympics to raise money through Polar Plunge at my school on our elected Unified Leadership Team that encourages inclusivity with our peers with special needs, a big passion of mine. Lastly, I’ve also kept up with Student Council by helping be a face that our student body can turn to, as well as organizing volunteering events to get everyone involved.
Learning that the most effective leadership practice stems from first building relationships through authenticity and empathy has created a world of change for me as I seek opportunities to do the same in others' lives. Through Orbis, a project-based course at school, I have been provided with the opportunity to dig into the true needs of our community and I recently set up a pen pal system with a non-profit! Our team goal was to combat the isolation that many senior citizens are experiencing during quarantine as we are altruistically motivated and understand that building relationships first is an important step of the process of change. This idea directly connects to our Servant Leadership Training in YLI. It increases trust, respect, and overall reliability as a leader. This idea has pushed me to become more motivated to help others around me as I strive to create change and leave people better than I found them.
I believe that YLI has helped me understand that every moment counts. Even though I am not entirely sure what I want to do in the future yet, I know I want to focus my energy into helping others. Living in the moment and taking a step back to appreciate every opportunity to dig into my passions has been life changing. I know that productivity takes hard work but when you create a change with your leadership, it is beyond rewarding, especially when you realize the extent of the impact and connections you have made.
My advice for current YLI students is to go into every experience with an open mind. This will allow you to learn from the experiences and connect them to your own passions. Focus on the present moment and listen to your peers and mentors, as everyone has something unique to bring to the table that will create a world of change. Allow yourself to fully immerse into the experience and grow, giving you the ability to feel support and acceptance that will stay with you forever.
Abby is currently a senior at Ankeny Centennial High School.

#34 Did you know? - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
Each summer thousands of young people are selected to attend Rotary-sponsored leadership camps or seminars in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, France, Argentina, Korea and numerous other countries. In an informal out-of-doors atmosphere, 50 to 75 outstanding young men and/or women spend a week in a challenging program of discussions, inspirational addresses, leadership training and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship. The official name of this activity is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program (RYLA), although the event is occasionally referred to as Camp Royal, Camp Enterprise, Youth Leaders Seminars, Youth Conferences or other terms.
The RYLA program began in Australia in 1959, when young people throughout the state of Queensland were selected to meet with Princess Alexandra, the young cousin of Queen Elizabeth 11. The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted the participants, were impressed with the quality of the young leaders. It was decided to bring youth leaders together each year for a week of social, cultural and educational activities. The RYLA program gradually grew throughout all the Rotary districts of Australia and New Zealand. In 1971, the RI Board of Directors adopted RYLA as an official program of Rotary International.

Rotary Radio Day was a great success. We have reached our goal of $6,000 by selling 30-second $15 ads featuring Rowan County businesses. Now we can give some to polio eradication, which is a international Rotary project. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match 2 to 1 what we give. We will also be able to send more 8th graders to the Rotary youth Leadership awards (RYLA) adventure weekend. We can also match our club’s part of our Rotary District Grant for ArtFest murals that will involve the students of Rowan County and other community projects.
