International Mud Day
Participate in a Mud Run, join or watch some Mud Wrestling, or just get out in the dirt with friends or family and let loose by getting messy and having fun.
Mud. It seems like a nuisance, doesn’t it? As soon as it rains, mud is everywhere, and it literally gets all over everything. There are definitely no benefits this slippery, sticky dirty substance could offer, right? Wrong. And the creators of International Mud Day are out to prove it! After all, mud is quintessential to the outdoors, and the outdoors mean fresh air and exercise, two of the best things for people. And so what if we get a little dirty? Plenty of research has shown that coming into contact with a certain amount of bacteria is good for us, as it helps build up immunity, as opposed to living in a virtually sterile environment, which makes our bodies very vulnerable. Not to mention how many minerals mud can—there’s a reason why people pay hundreds of dollars for mud masks and baths at spas. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get dirty!
The History of International Mud Day
The creators of International Mud Day wanted to find a way to help all of the children of the Earth feel closer to each other…and what a better way to do it than through the Earth itself? International Mud Day began in 2009 at a World Forum event, when Gillian McAuliffe from Australia and Bishnu Bhatta from Nepal got together to talk about ways to encourage feelings of community and appreciation for the world around us. The collaboration that followed has inspired educators, children, and families across the globe, from Holland to Nepal to the United States, to celebrate International Mud Day together each year on June 29. Regardless of age, race and religion, covered in mud, we all look the same!
How to Celebrate International Mud Day
There are countless ways to celebrate International Mud Day, but all of them have one thing in common: you have to get dirty. This day can be especially fun if you have children, because who likes to get dirty as much as children? One of the most creative and fun activities that would be perfect to do on International Mud Day is making mud sculptures or mud cakes. It’s easy to adjust the consistency of the mud you’re using by simply adding a little more earth or water, so it should be easy to make what you want to make, while enjoying plenty of carefree laughter and quality family time in the process. Yet another easy way to enjoy this day to the fullest is to make a homemade mud pit using a blow-up pool. Not only is this cheap, but it also makes for a truly unique experience. All you have to do once you’ve bought a small blow-up pool is fill it with mud that can easily be filled using a mixture of earth and water that your children can then splash around in. Just make sure that you’re prepared to throw out your their clothes once you peel them off, because there is no way those clothes will ever get clean again.
After all, as American botanist Luther Burbank said,
“Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb. Brooks to wade…bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to toll, sand, snakes and hornets; any child who has been deprives of these has been deprived of the best part of…education.”

(Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty),介紹這個曾經是賓客雲集,揮金如土的富商家族。

Northern Maine is timber country. Tim and Dora took an early morning walk on the ATV/snowmobile trails behind the campground. There were clear signs at every junction. Some of the trails were along logging roads, and were marked with signs giving the logging trucks right of way. They walked until they met a logging crew, and then turned back so as not to have a poodle run afoul of their operation.
According to Wikipedia, the section of Maine Rt. 9 from Bangor to Calais is often referred to as "The Airline" due to it being commonly thought to be a shorter route than the older U.S. 1. (Before the coming of air travel, the term airline often referred to such a shortcut.)
The sign above the door of the Airline Snackbar & Restauran advertises homemade pies and donuts. A pastry for breakfast would be a nice treat, and a pie, Tim figured, would be an even nicer one. They had neither in the pastry case. Just some chocolate chip crullers. Tim and Margaret shared one. It was mediocre.
We breezed through Customs at Calais. At one point the agent asked if we had any firearms, bear spray or mace. Jeanne got a smile from Customs agent when she responded, "Oh, no. Canada is safe."
We stopped for lunch on the Bay of Fundy at Irving Nature Park. The outhouses had classic moon vents.
Margaret, Tim and Dora took a walk along the clay cliffs on the shore of the bay. We discussed the formation of sandstone, limestone, and mudstone rocks. As opposed to the formation of the Grand Canyon in geologic time, the rusty red clay cliffs above us exhibited erosion in human time, with a rivulet carrying silt down the cliff face to a muddy delta at the bottom. We are puzzled by a green-colored rock that looks for all the world like granite.
The stony beach gave way to sand from time to time, giving Dora time to run to her heart's content.
Then a drive up to Moncton, and a walk through the Moncton Riverview Park nestled along the Petitcodiac River. This is the famous river with the amazing tidal bore that we saw on our first RV trip in 2017.
According to Parks Canada, the Bay of Fundy's tides are the highest in the world because of an unusual combination of resonance, or seiche, and the shape of the bay. Like water in any basin, the water in the Bay of Fundy has a natural rocking motion called a seiche. You could compare this to the movement of water in a bathtub. Although the water in a bathtub sloshes from one end to the other and back again in a few seconds, it takes about 13 hours for the water in the bay to rock from the mouth of the bay to the head of the bay and back again. The Atlantic Ocean tide rising and flooding into the bay every 12 hours and 25 minutes reinforces the rocking motion. And that is why the tides are so high, oh Best Beloved, do you see?
We settled in for the night at the Loch Lomond RV Park in Amherst, Nova Scotia. It is one of the nicest RV parks we have ever visited. Everything is clean and well-maintained. The bathroom and laundry room building is bright and airy. The bathrooms are individual rooms with a skylight and a shower in each one.
Our neighbors are friendly North Carolinaians who are visiting Nova Scotia for the first time. We expect they are going to have a great trip.

Welcome!
Hi everyone! Welcome to my blog called Under the Surface. First off, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself and why I am in a biology degree. My name is Nathanael, but I mostly go by Nate these days. I’m a fourth-year biology major at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Some fun notes about me, I am a coffee junkie and I also love to play the guitar! I have the absolute pleasure of completing an honors research project under the supervision of Dr. Mike Duffy. My work in Mike’s lab is all around glochidia, which is the parasitic juvenile life stage of freshwater mussels that attach to the gills of fish. I am currently studying the pearl mussel infestations in Atlantic salmon from the Petitcodiac River system. I have also got the opportunity to work with other parasite projects including a swim bladder parasite in American eels.
By now you probably realize why I am calling this blog “Under the Surface” as it will be focusing on parasites found in aquatic and marine environments. I chose this language for two reasons, one because fish live underwater of course, and because often these parasites are found inside the fish. It is important to understand how parasites contribute and how they affect different ecological systems. Although parasites are often thought of in a negative light some parasites cause minimal damage to their host and may benefit the ecological system they are in. For example, glochidia which I mentioned early use fish as a dispersal technique and sometimes a way to grow in the juvenile stage before becoming adult freshwater mussels. This parasitic relationship causes minimal harm to the host fish but benefits the greater system because mussels are filter feeders meaning they can create a more habitable space for other organisms in the water including fish.
In the world today it is becoming increasingly important to understand the effects that humans cause on the ecosystem we coexist with. Our understanding of the parasitic world can be a crucial component to the conservation efforts locally. Fish barriers such as hydroelectric dams and the introduction of invasive species into water systems are two examples of how we can cause a change in these relationships that can harm populations in an aquatic or marine system. I plan to give you important knowledge based on recent primary literature. This is so that you can understand the facts and come to learn how you can protect these fragile parasite-host relationships around you.
Until next time,
Nate

Dagályos Kanada, túlcsordulva
Nyari villamlatogatasunk alatt is mar bejott Uj-Brunswick, de most aztan fulig szerelmes lettem bele. Valoszinuleg sokat vetett a latba, hogy osszel vagyunk egy olyan provinciaban, amelyet 83-85%-ban erdok boritanak. Meghozza eszak-amerikai erdok. Ezer kilometer szinorgia! Egeszen elkepeszto. I simply can’t handle so much emotions any more!”
Utban Prince Edward-sziget fele megalltunk Uj-Brunswick fovarosaban, Frederictonban, ahol a helyi kepzomuveszeti galeria mellett betertunk a Christ Church-katedralisba is.
Erdemes ranezni a Google-on Monctonra es kornyekere a magasbol: a folyamatosan le-folingazo vasoxidos hordalek tropusi folyovizekre emlekztetnek.

@coachsandybatten and I spent an entire day at @thehopewellrocks Provincial Park. Situated at the end of the Bay of Fundy and between the mouths of Petitcodiac River and Demoiselle Creek, this is one of the best places to watch the famous Tides of Fundy rise and fall. I checked the ride tables to see that low tide was at 12:20pm and high tide at 6:19pm, so we arrived at 8:30 to watch the tide go out ... stayed for low tide and then watched the tide come all the way back in. That day, the tide measured 30 feet! The famous rock formations show the effects of the massive tides... the seaweed line is the average high tide, such also coincides with the narrow "waist" of the flowerpot rocks. The upper part of the waist shows where the highest tides have worn away at the sand conglomerate rocks. One of the big advantages to arriving so early .. it was less people-y 😁😍🙃😉 we were able to walk around and take in the sites without dodging other tourists. The Petitcodiac is known as the "Chocolate River" because of the unique colour of the mud. It was surreal walking through these massive rock structures and watching the water recede. Even better was standing still and feeling the water rise up our legs so quickly. All of the flowerpots are named. The last image is the famous "Elephant Rock", which unfortunately fell due to natural causes a few years ago. If you go to New Brunswick, this is a must-see. If you are deciding between Fundy and Hopewell, go here of you can only pick one. #roadtrip #willandsandy #willandsandysexcellentadventure #welcomenb #tourismnb #tourismnewbrunswick #vacationlife (at Hopewell Rocks, Nouveau-Brunswick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgVKkO9pyxO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
