The construction of the Prince Royal was ordered by King James I and Phineas Pett I was chosen as the designer. Pett and the design of his ship were controversial among contemporaries, so that several investigations were carried out during the construction at the instigation of his opponents. Construction of the ship, which was designed for 55 cannons, began in October 1608. When it was launched in 1610, it was one of the largest ships of its time.  The cannons were placed on three decks. Constructively the Prince Royal was an immediate forerunner of the three-decker ships of the line. In comparison to the following ships of this size, however, relatively few cannons were still set up on the decks. Another feature that distinguished them from newer ships such as the Sovereign of the Seas of 1637 was the gradation of the decks in the aft part of the hull. The Sovereign of the Seas had continuous decks. The size of the front and aft castles of the Prince Royal and the intermediate hollow, which was to serve as a trap for disinheriting enemies, show that considerations of entrapment still played a very important role in the design of the ship. Since the tactic of the keel line had not yet established itself around 1610, it would be an anachronism to call the Prince Royal a liner ship in her early years.  In the course of time the ship was fundamentally rebuilt several times and its artillery armament was strengthened. The dimensions of the hull were increased within certain limits, but the fact that the armament increased disproportionately from 55 cannons in 1610 to 92 cannons in 1666 indicates that the concept of a liner ship with maximum artillery only developed within this period.

The Prince Royal was rigged as a full ship and as such mainly led square sails. An early painting from 1613 shows the ship with a fourth mast (Bonaventure mast). However, this mast was probably removed only a few years later. On the bowsprit there was a sprie mast on which a square sail could be set.

In 1641 the Prince Royal was rebuilt by Peter Pett in Woolwich and regularly extended to 70 cannons. During the English Commonwealth it was renamed Resolution and fought in most of the battles of the First English-Dutch War.

On 8 October 1652, the Prince Royal took part as a resolution in the Battle of the Sea at Kentish Knock. Admiral Robert Blake switched from the slower but larger Sovereign of the Seas to the faster and more agile Resolution and raised his Admiral flag here. At the beginning of the battle Blake tried to break through the Dutch keel line, but together with the English Dolphin he got too far forward and was surrounded by the enemies. Only by advancing English units both ships could be saved from bigger damages, the sinking or even the capture. The battle ended with a retreat of the Dutch. On 12 June 1653 the resolution took part in the naval battle near Gabbard. The battle began with approximately the same number of ships on both sides and ended with heavy losses for the Dutch, who became easy prey for the English due to a calm. The Dutch lost a total of 22 ships by entry or sinking - the English not a single one.

On 10 August 1653, the resolution took part in the naval battle at Scheveningen. In this battle the Dutch tried to undermine the blockade policy of the English in the English Channel - but in this attempt they lost twelve of their ships due to severe damage or sinking. This and the fact that in the battle the Dutch fleet commander Maarten Tromp had been killed led to a strong moral loss of the Dutch, who finally withdrew. The Dutch attack had been fended off - but at the same time the blockade had to be abandoned due to severe damage to the English ships, so that both sides finally received a positive response to the battle.

In 1660 the resolution was provisionally equipped with 80 cannons. Between 1660 and 1663 a further fundamental repair was carried out in Woolwich under the supervision of Phineas Pett II, increasing the dimensions and tonnage considerably. The armament now consisted of 92 cannons and the ship was classified as a first class ship. It was also renamed Royal Prince. Samuel Pepys was on board when the ship floated up in the dock in July 1663 after the repair had been completed.

In 1665, during the Second English-Dutch War, she served Edward Montagu as flagship in the Battle of the Sea at Lowestoft on 3 June. During these battles, the Dutch succeeded in conquering the Royal Prince, who had already hoisted the Prinsenvlag on the ship. Only by an attack of the English Royal James the crew could be saved from the capture and the ship be recaptured. The Dutch lost 17 ships in this battle by conquest or sinking and altogether nearly 5000 sailors, so that they fled with the remaining ships from the English.

In 1666 the Royal Prince was the flagship of Admiral George Ayscue. The ship also took part in the four-day battle on 11 June 1666, in which Englishmen and Dutchmen faced each other off the coast of England. During the armed conflicts, the English admiral George Monck withdrew on the morning of 13 June with 30 ships ready for battle to the northwest in the direction of the Thames estuary. The Dutch followed him with difficulty and only few fights took place. The Royal Prince, one of the largest English ships of the battle, ran however on a shoal and fell out thus for further tactical maneuvers.

As Dutch Brander approached the stranded ship, the Royal Prince's crew panicked and struck the flag. Admiral Ayscue was forced to capitulate to Lieutenant-Admiral Cornelis Tromp on board the Dutch warship Gouda. On the orders of the Dutch Fleet Commander, Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, the ship was not kept as a prize, however, but burned so that it could not be recaptured by the English in the further course of the battle.

Ander lede is 'n titaniese vegter so swart soos steenkool en met 'n stentoriese stem, 'n vaalgeel heer met fyn krygssmaak, 'n pragtige eksemplaar met skilpadhare en 'n groot ligte brindel - alles verdra of min of meer onder die loep geneem. Wanneer vier of vyf van hulle op die dak van die klub onder my venster bymekaarkom, is die effek dié van die beste geselskap waarop jy kan hoop. Lewende Ligte in die Nag

IE natour rus nooit. Wanneer die meeste Dvoëltjies slaap, is die uil op die jag uit en hef die nagtegaal sy wonderskone lied aan. Wanneer die skoenlapper rus, fladder die motte deur die duisternis en ontwaak allerlei klein wesens wat deur die warm ure van die dag gesluimer het.

Loop ons op 'n warm someraand deur 'n rustige laan, sien ons hier en daar onder die heinings 'n klein glim mende vunkie, asof 'n fee-lampie besig is om die pad te verlig vir die burgers van die insekwêreld wat in die donker wandel. Raak ons een van hierdie lampies met ons vingerpunte aan, doof dit onmiddellik uit, kom pleet asof die fee met die lampie in alleryl die lig afge skakel het. En as ons sorgvuldig in die gras begin rond sock, sal ons waarskynlik op 'n snaakse klein insek afkom op die einste plek waar die lig geskyn het. Maar dit lyk glad nie soos 'n feetjie nie! Dis niks anders as 'n bruinerige, wurmagtige dingetjie, wat niks treffends of moois aan hom het nie. Net soos 'n mens begin dink dat die werklike feetjie met die lamp waarskynlik deur die lang gras ontglip het, glim hierdie lelike insek plotseling weer en weet 'n mens dadelik dat jy hier met 'n glim wurm te doen het.

Die glimwurm is egter nie werklik 'n wurm nie, hoewel

dit presies daarna lyk. Dis 'n vroulike kewertjie wat blykbaar, nes Peter Pan, nooit opgroei nie. Wanneer sy deur al haar stadiums gegaan het en tot die volmaakte kewer ontwikkel het, lyk sy maar net soos toe sy nog 'n wurmpie was. Sy het geen vlerke nie, en haar ses pootjies is bra swak. Daarom kan sy nie baie goed vlieg of loop nie. Maar by wyse van vergoeding vir al hierdie gebreke het die glimwurm 'n wonderlike lamp aan die punt van haar liggaam gekry wat sy kan aansteek of uitdoof net soos dit haar behaag.

Hoewel dit 'n mooi liggie is, reken julle seker dat dit nie van veel nut vir hierdie koddige kewertjie kan wees nie, maar daar het julle dit mis, want die glimwurm se lig is in werklikheid 'n baie belangrike besitting, waar sonder sy dikwels baie verlate en verstote sal voel.

Die meeste kewers kan vlieg of loop wanneer hulle wil gaan kuier en sommige het musiekinstrumente wat hulle bespeel as hulle aandag wil trek. Maar die glim wurm kan nie vlieg nie; sy is geen goeie stapper en sy kan ook geen geluid maak nie. Wanneer sy dus na geselskap verlang, steek hierdie klein kewer haar lampie aan as teken dat sy gereed is om besoekers te ontvang, en die manlike insekte kom van heinde en ver by hair kuier sodra hulle die liggie sien glim.

Die manlike glimwurm het so te sê geen lamp nie, maar net twee dowwe ligpuntjies net naby sy stert. Maar hy het geen lamp nodig nie, omdat hy 'n paar breë, sterk vlerke het en kan vlieg waarheen hy wil. Hy is 'n koddige insek, omtrent die helfte so groot soos die vroulike glimwurm, en lyk soos 'n klein, ouderwetse koster. Sy vlerkskilde is sag en bedek hom soos 'n lang swart manel. Sy kop is baie klein en weggesteek onder sy skouerstuk, wat amper soos 'n koster se keil lyk.

Glimwurms is nuttige kewers; in hul wurmstadium is hulle besonder lief vir slakke en help dus mee om hier die vernietigende peste in ons tuine in bedwang te bou.Die maaiertjies woel hulself tot binne-in die slak se dop en aus ewe getroos op die ongelukkige slak wat binne-in sit.

Insekte word dikwels die verkeerde name genoem. Ewemin as wat ons klein glimwurmpie 'n wurm is, is die skitterende vuurvliegies wat saans in die warmer lande so heerlik ronddans en glinster, geen vlieë nie. Hulle is ook kewers. Die vuurvliegies van Suidelike Europa is na familie van die Engelse glimwurm, maar in hulle geval is dit die manlike kewertjies wat die helderste lampies dra. Op warm, stil someraande vlieg honderde van hierdie kewertjies in groepe saam en skitter soos diamante op die donker bome en struike en flits soos verskietende sterre wanneer hulle van plek tot plek rond vlieg.

Maar die merkwaardigste lewende nagligte" is die vuurvliegies van Suid-Amerika en die Wes-Indiese eilande. Daar is die donker woude op warm, drukkende aande aan die brand soos miljarde van hierdie glinste rende insekte in die lug rondflits en speel. Hulle lig is so helder dat 'n mens maklik daarby kan lees. Die in boorlinge dra twee of drie van hierdie kewertjies in lin nesakkies rund om as lampe te dien, of maak vuurvliegies aan hulle hande en voete vas wanneer hulle snags deur die woude loop. Die inboorlingvroue gebruik die vuur vliegies as versierings. Hulle maak dit vas in hulle hare en aan hulle rokke, waar dit skitter en glinster soos lewende juwele. Hulle sorg goed vir hulle vuurvliegies. Bedags word hulle in klein koutjies, van die fynste draad, bewaar en op suikerriet gevoer. Twee maal per dag word hulle in lou water gebad.

Hierdie kewers straal dwarsdeur hulle lewe lig uit. Daar word beweer dat selfs die eiertjies sag glim. Aan vanklik het die baba-wurmpies 'n klein lampie agter hulle koppe, namate hulle ouer word, verskyn helder ligpunte al langs hulle sye. Wanneer hulle volgroeid is, dra die volmaakte vuurvlieg drie skynende lampe. Twee

heldergeel voorligte glinster, soos groot oë, op hulle skouerblaaie net agter hulle koppe en 'n stertlig wat rooieriger van kleur is, flits wanneer die insek vlieg. Wanneer hulle op 'n tak tot rus kom, is die stertlig on sigbaar en merk 'n mens net die twee gloeiende voor ligte op.

In die daglig is die vuurvliegies alles behalwe aan skoulike dinge, maar doodgewone, oninteressante kewer tjies. Hulle kruip weg totdat die son sak. Wanneer die skemering daal, kruip hulle die een na die ander te voorskyn en begin hulle liggies dowwerig skyn soos sterretjies in die diep skaduwees onder die groot, don ker bome. Hulle waag dit egter nie buite voordat dit pikdonker is nie. Dan verlaat hulle hul skuilings in die bome en verlig die duisternis van die nag met hulle glinsterende lampies terwyl hulle vinnig heen en weer vlieg en 'n soort lugdans uitvoer.

Ook in China en Japan is daar vuurvliegies. Die Japanners het allerlei interessante staaltjies en legendes om hierdie merkwaardige insekte opgebou. Hulle sê dat die geeste van verskillende oorlogsugtige stamme in die vuurvliegies herleef, en wanneer twee groepe mekaar soms in die lug ontmoet en in mekaar verstrengel raak, sê die mense dat die ou krygsmanne andermaal aan die veg is.

In Japan gaan groepe jong mense op sekere tye van die jaar op 'n vuurvliegjag uit. 'n Stil, donker nag word natuurlik uitgekies, want die helder maanlig verdoof begryplikerwys die lampe van die kewertjies. Die mense sê: Wanneer hulle agtervolg word, kruip die vuur vliegies in die maanlig weg."

Elke jagter is gewapen met 'n bamboeswaaier waar mee hy of sy die vuurvliegies neerslaan. Elkeen het ook 'n klein koutjie, gemaak van fyn sy, waarin die gevange kewertjies dan opgesluit word. Terwyl die vrolike jaggeselskap hulle skrede na die naaste stroompie wend waar die vuurvliegies so heerlik aan die speel is, sing

hulle die lied van die vuurvliegjag: Kom, vuurvlieg, kom,

Na die lig van die lantern, kom!"
