Reactions from Slovakian and Hungarian Leaders to Biden's Missile Decision for Ukraine
Strong Reactions from Slovakian and Hungarian Leaders on Biden’s Decision On Monday, political leaders from Slovakia and Hungary expressed vehement opposition to President Joe Biden’s recent decision to permit Ukraine to target locations within Russia using longer-range missiles supplied by the United States. This move has sparked outrage, particularly among those advocating for peace in the…

Government saved Hungary from war, Hungarian FM says
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said the government “has managed to save Hungary from the war and resisted all external pleasure” in the past two years, The Budapest Times reports.
While speaking at a panel discussion in Biatorbagy, outside Budapest, he said this was made possible by Hungary’s “political stability, which is unique in Europe”.
Referring to the war in Ukraine, Szijjártó said:
“We have succeeded in fending off all attempts to make us join the pro-war camp. The government had resisted pressure to make decisions that would have prolonged and escalated the war. There is only NATO country that has not transported arms to Ukraine and that is us… Slovakia is now second, but they send weapons earlier.”
The minister said statements suggesting sending troops to Ukraine were “extremely dangerous”, adding that such remarks could have “dramatic ramifications in such a tense situation. He added:
“Russia cannot be defeated on the battlefield… but in view of the Western military support, it is not expected that Ukraine could be brought to its knees; sooner or later diplomatic settlement will follow. The question is when the war will bring more deaths, further destruction and further risks of escalation”.

Hungary quits IIB Bank after US sanctions
The Hungarian government decided to exit the Russia-controlled International Investment Bank (IIB) after the United States imposed sanctions on three senior officials of the financial institution. Russian nationals Nikolay Kosov, the bank's former chairman, Georgy Potapov, and Imre Laszloczki a Hungarian citizen, were named on the sanctions list.
Before Budapest's decision the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania have already quit or started the withdrawal process from the bank that is often referred to as Moscow's trojan horse' in the European Union.
US Ambassador David Pressman held a press conference on Wednesday where he announced the sanctions. "The presence of this opaque Kremlin platform in the heart of Hungary threatens the security and sovereignty of the Hungarian people, their European neighbors, and their NATO allies," Pressman said. “Unlike other NATO allies, Hungary has dismissed the concerns of the United States government regarding the risks its continued presence poses to the alliance,” the ambassador added.
Pentagon leaks: Orban called the U.S. one of his main adversaries
Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban was also mentioned in the recently leaked CIA assessment. Orban reportedly called the US one of the top three adversaries of his party. According to the leaked document the comment was made during a Fidesz parliamentary meeting in February. The leaked CIA document states that Orbán’s statement “constitutes an escalation of the level of anti-American rhetoric in his discourse.”
Relations between Washington and Budapest are tense, many because of Orban's close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hungary was the only EU member state without an invite to US President Joe Biden's Summit for Democracy last month.
Hungary signs new energy deal with Russia
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto signed new agreements in Moscow to ensure Hungary's continued access to Russian energy. The Hungarian FM met Russian Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Alexander Novak and Alexey Likhachev, chief executive of Rosato, AP reports. Szijjarto said Russian state energy company Gazprom had agreed to allow Hungary, if needed, to import quantities of natural gas beyond the amounts agreed to in a long-term contract that was amended last year.
Szijjarto is one of the only EU officials that have met Russian officials in Moscow since Russia invaded Ukraine. “As long as the issue of energy supply is a physical issue and not a political or ideological one, like it or not, Russia and cooperation with Russia will remain crucial for Hungary’s energy security,” Hungary's top diplomat said.
Belarusian Foreign Minister holds talks with Szijjarto in Hungary
On Tuesday, Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik arrived in Hungary, to meet with Minister of Agriculture István Nagy and Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto. Szijjarto has just arrived back from Moscow where he sealed new energy deals with Russia, despite EU criticism. Alenik took part in an intergovernmental meeting where economic cooperation was discussed between the two countries.
In March the European Parliament adopted a resolution that underlines the importance of strengthening EU unity concerning Belarus, including the diplomatic isolation of the current regime. The resolution includes a paragraph on Szijjártó's recent trip to Minsk.

SLOVAKIA ELECTS A NEW PRESIDENT — AND MANY IN THE PREVIOUS ONE’S TEAM MAY LEAVE THE COUNTRY
The Slovak presidential election run-off between Peter Pellegrini and Ivan Korčok takes place on April 6, and my Slovak colleagues tell me it can truly go either way. Surprisingly, former foreign minister Korčok won the first run and may now have a chance to beat Pellegrini, the pro-Russian Fico government’s candidate. On the other hand, if Pellegrini can pick off the other candidates’ votes, that Korčok took round one may not matter much. Regardless of the outcome, nobody really expects the government’s crackdown on NGOs, the media and the anti-corruption institutions to stop, nor for the increasingly hostile and toxic nature of the county’s public discourse to improve – certainty not outgoing president Zuzana Čaputová’s team. According to multiple Slovak and Czech experts and officials in touch with the current Slovak presidential team, multiple Čaputová advisors – including those dealing with domestic and foreign affairs – are already looking for apartments and jobs in Prague, which is to say they are seriously considering leaving Slovakia for the Czech Republic. A Czech source in touch with them even said that “most of them” (in Čaputová’s team) are actually at least to some extent thinking about leaving their country, while a Slovak source added that, according to their knowledge, those who have already decided will do so regardless of the outcome of the presidential election. “Many of the advisors are looking for international jobs as well,” the source added. The situation since Fico returned to power looks increasingly similar to the 1990s, when thuggish Vladimír Mečiar’s rule forced many Slovak intellectuals to relocate to Prague. (In case you missed it, here’s my recent investigation into how Pellegrini secretly asked for Russian – and Hungarian – help in an attempt to win the 2020 parliamentary elections. Did he do the same this time? Hopefully we’ll find out soon.)
CZECHS NOW BRACING FOR SERIOUS PRO-RUSSIAN SHIFT IN BRATISLAVA
My seasoned subscribers may remember last autumn, when, in certain Goulash scoops, my Czech government and government-linked sources essentially shrugged off speculation that Robert Fico, previously known for his extremely pragmatic approach to foreign policy, would seriously shift Slovakia’s foreign policy eastwards. Well, I’ve just spent a week in Prague, met most of them again, and I can tell you: they sounded way less optimistic. “When (Slovak Foreign Minister) Juraj Blanár met with Sergey Lavrov in Turkey, they crossed a red line,” a Czech government official told me, adding that what is fully expected of Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó (who actually enjoys posing as Lavrov’s best buddy) was not expected of the Fico government. Moreover, according to a Czech diplomat dealing with security matters, some now fear that one of the outcomes of the Blanár–Lavrov meeting could be that the Slovak government accepts three or four additional Russian diplomats at the Russian embassy in Bratislava. The Czech Republic clearly sees this as a national security threat as they expect that Russia is essentially trying to replenish its decimated spy outposts in embassies around the region. (Also, if you’re interested in how Russian embassies are conducting signals intelligence operations too, I recommend this earlier article.)
But there’s more. Multiple Czech government officials and foreign policy experts with whom I spoke are now so pessimistic that they fear the Fico government may refuse any reinforcements to the 3000 soldiers strong NATO Multinational Battle Group in Slovakia (there are plans to raise its capacity by thousands). Moreover, if the country indeed goes down a pro-Russian path, my Czech sources don’t rule out the possibility of Fico deciding to kick the battle group out of Slovakia. “Two years ago, we already had to brand this battlegroup as a ‘Czech mission’ to make it acceptable to Slovak society. So there can be an issue” – one of my sources concluded.

In late 2021, as he was massing troops on the Ukrainian border, Putin personally awarded the Kremlin’s Order of Friendship to the Hungarian foreign minister, Peter Szijjártó.
Orbán is a darling of the American Right today — of Heritage, CPAC, Turning Point, etc. Talk about “a substantial realignment.” While Orbán is a darling, Ukraine’s Zelensky is anything but.
This says a great deal. It is well to remember, however, that one realignment can follow another. Life does not stand still (fortunately and unfortunately).

Hungary plans to redirect its allocation from the European Peace Fund (EPF) toward Chad's defense rather than supporting Ukraine's military efforts. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó announced that the government has proposed allocating €14 million from the EPF to help develop Chad's defense capabilities. This proposal will be discussed by EU countries at the Council on September 26, and Hungary is hopeful for approval.
In addition, Hungary intends to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Chad by upgrading its representation in N'Djamena to an embassy. During a visit by a Chadian delegation led by President Mahamat Deby, several agreements were signed between the two nations, covering cooperation in areas like defense, combating illegal migration, and agriculture. This move aims to enhance Hungary's strategic partnership with Chad and improve economic, educational, and military collaboration.

Albania starts EU accession talks
Albania will open the first chapter of European Union accession talks in Luxembourg on Tuesday, seeking to move forward in its decade-long quest to join the 27-nation bloc.
Tuesday’s accession conference will be the second held between the EU and Albania since it became a candidate country in 2014. It will allow Brussels to scrutinise the so-called “basics” of accession, including how the country respects human rights, the rule of law and the functioning of democratic institutions.
Negotiations on these issues will continue until the very end of the accession talks, and progress on Brussels’ demands will determine the overall pace of the process.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó told a press conference that Albania fully meets the criteria for negotiations and the state’s admission to the EU will benefit all members of the union. Szijjártó called for speeding up the EU accession process for all Western Balkan states. However, he noted that Albania’s accession to the community would be “long and complex,” the exact timing of the state’s accession to the EU is not set, and the negotiations could last years.
The talks were approved by EU ambassadors in late September after Albania split from neighbouring North Macedonia in its EU bid amid what is seen as renewed tensions between Skopje’s nationalist government and its EU neighbours.
EU ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato told Euronews that the talks could lead to Tirana joining Montenegro as a “front-runner” to apply to join the bloc. Gonzato said in September:
Albania does not have a plan B. There is a clear cross-party consensus on bringing Albania into the EU.
Albania was granted candidate status for EU accession in 2014, in 2020 the EU Council approved the start of accession negotiations and started the process in 2022. It was only on October 11 that the Committee of Permanent Representatives “adopted the EU common position opening the first negotiating bloc to Albania,” and an intergovernmental conference is held on October 15.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó announced his country’s intention to block consultations on Ukraine’s accession to the structures of the European Union. According to him, today Kyiv’s presence in the United Europe poses a “serious danger” for Brussels, and Hungarian politicians will do everything possible to block any attempts by the Ukrainian state to even move one step closer to the EU. Oddly enough, this statement caused bewilderment in the highest circles of the European Union. It would seem that one could already get used to Hungary’s position regarding Ukrainian European integration. Previously, the leadership of this country, including Prime Minister Viktor Orban, almost unanimously declared that Kyiv was violating the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia, and, therefore, could not claim membership in the “European family.” In addition, Budapest accuses Ukraine of misuse of financial and technical funds allocated to it by the European Union. But in this particular case we are talking about a precedent. This time, Hungary opposed even the consultations themselves on Kyiv’s presence in the EU. It was assumed that the relevant consultations would take place before the end of December this year. As President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen noted during her recent visit to Kiev, Ukraine has fulfilled 90 percent of the West’s demands for joining the EU, and in the near future - if there are no objections - the European Union will begin negotiations on the future status of the Ukrainian state in this structure . But there are already objections. It should be especially noted that, according to current European legislation, the voice of Hungary, which claims that there is no freedom of speech and elections in Ukraine, can be counted during the discussion on the feasibility of Kyiv’s accession to the EU. “It turns out that Budapest has already lit a red light for Ukraine on the road to United Europe,” European observer Yiannis Papadonis summed up in a special commentary for EURO-ATLANTIC UKRAINE. “Whether this light will change to green is still unclear.” Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna noted that a few days ago Kyiv proposed to Budapest a so-called “road map” for resolving the problem of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia.
